Games & Challenges goal weight by christmas Nov 21 2009

nycgirl- If you haven't noticed, pretty much everyone's goal is around 6-10 pounds by christmas, which is about 1.5-2.5 pounds per week.  It just hasn't gotten changed in the original post.

I'd still recommend one day a week off of working out.  If nothing else, you need a mental break every once in a while.  Even with doing cardio, I think that your body does appreciate the rest.  But I guess its up to the individual to decide.  Perhaps try it both ways, a month one way, and a month the other, and decide for yourself.

do we have a specific weigh in day?

Right now, I'm not worrying much about intake/weight because we have a pretty big swim meet, so I'm eating for performance (all good foods obviously, but calorie-wise, at or slightly above maintenance) and I typically gain a little over that higher-calorie intake period, but it goes away immediately afterwards.  I think of it as "bulk" weight... just the extra food or what-not that sits in my body since I eat more.

Anyway, even with that, my stats are:

SW (today's): 151.5

GW (by christmas): 145

all-time high: 170

Once I get back to eating to lose weight though, I suspect I'll be right at or below 150 again.

Hey, 1200 cal girl... 2 pounds doesn't equal a dress size....  haha. I'd be size -1 at this point if that was the case, since I started at size 9 and have dropped 20 pounds....

Hey! Do you mind if I join?  I'm actually only looking to be between 140-145 by Christmas (I'm at 150 right now) but I've been doing really poorly the last few weeks, and am searching for some motivation.

A little about myself, highest weight was 170 (sophomore year of college), I was 155 when I came to college, now I'm a 4th-year junior, chemical engineering student and college athlete.  (we're in season now, which is why I don't want to dramatically deprive myself of nutrients!)

I'll be done with my college swimming career in february, which is another reason why I want to slim down now, so that I'm not fighting too hard to get my ideal body when I stop working out 20 hours a week! (I'm actually looking forward to losing a bit of muscle at that point... lol)

Anyway, 150 at 5'6" and extremely athletic isn't huge or anything, but I'm aiming for 140 gw

Jak-

So, the most important thing to me was body fat %.  I gained about 15 pounds in college, so I was working to lose those, which I finally did.  My highest was 170, and now I weigh 150ish, but in the process, my body has really liked what I've done, since I am now swimming much better and more consistently than I did at 170.  Plus, when I eat around 2000 calories (which is still a deficit for sure) I feel a lot more energetic, possibly because of the types of food I consume.

See if you can talk to your trainer about it, if you are concerned.  We had a nutritionist come in and talk to our team, and she comes back every year.  We have the ability to schedule individual appointments with her, and she'll check our body fat % if we want too.  Anyway, I know that as a D1 athlete, you have a lot of resources!!!

And I found that it was SO much easier to eat healthily when I moved off campus and started cooking for myself.

Hey Jak!! I am a college athlete, D1 for swimming.  How are you?

I am not entirely sure, even today, how many calories I REALLY should be eating.  However, I consume about 2200 or so each day and lose a bit on it, which is my goal, because I need to slim down just a bit.

Calorie count estimates about 2400 for me when I put in "very active" and estimates about 2700 when I put in my workouts.  I think the 2400 number is closer to being accurate.  I also think that this makes sense, since we are probably more efficient at what we do than the average Jo.

Feel free to message me!

hedgren- you are completely right about the swimming thing.

I am absolutely terrified of life-after-swimming.  I don't know what I am going to do.  It has been such a part of my life for so long (I've been swimming competitively since around age 6, so 15 years) that I don't know what to fill the void with.  When people ask what I'll do, I'll respond non-chalantly "Oh. Drugs." :-) I am kidding though.  I don't know if its something that I can continue on with, since I have been so used to training at an elite level, and it might be an "all-or-nothing" thing for me, and somewhat depressing to remember when I used to be so much better.

I think that I will start off by picking up some other sport/activity for a while, and then swim again in the summer w/ my brother's club team, since I will hopefully be home again.  But any advice on that front is much appreciated, because literally, I spend at least 20 hrs/week devoted to swimming right now, and have sacrificed a lot of other opportunities (i.e. summer internships, engineering conferences, etc) in order to swim.

angie- I am 5'6", and 140 is right in my healthy bmi range.  Perhaps I should just ask for them for christmas, as I am always short on items for that list, and my birthday is right around christmas as well.  That way I can see what fits and have some motivation still as well.  However, I doubt that 10 more pounds will really make another size difference, but asking for them for christmas/birthday eases my mind about the cost as well.  :-) (unless I find them on sale in the meantime!)

Hey! I just thought that I would share my stats with you, kkrake.

I'm 5'6", I'm 21 (so a bit older), but I'm on the swim team as well.  I have practice in the afternoons M-F, and M/W/F in the morning, although 3 of those sessions are weight lifting/drill sessions, and then we usually have a meet in there somewhere, plus saturday practice.

Anyway, I find that I actually LOSE weight when I eat 2000-2200 calories/day.  Since you are younger than I am (and presumably still developing a little), but perhaps not quite as active, I would still recommend upping your calories to at least what I'm getting, around 2200.  You probably don't need to lose any more weight, as you probably have a pretty low body fat percentage already, and any more loss will just be muscle, which will hinder your performance.

So I'd try upping your calories to 2200 or so, but watch the scale.  If you start gaining, then lower them just a bit, say to 2000 or so.  If you still lose, up them by 100 or 200 calories.  But play around with it.

I just posted on this problem as well! lol.

At a social gathering, this girl said "damn! you got skinny!" really loudly, in a crowded room, and I really didn't know what to say... I did just smile and say thanks, but it was really awkward.

Usually, if its not that setting, I usually feel like I have to justify myself in some way, so I generally respond with a "thanks.  I've been working really hard" or "thanks. I've really been watching it", something like that.  That way, if they want to make conversation, it gives an opening, but if not, then the subject should naturally switch.

Good job and good luck!

Hell no! I wouldn't want her dissecting my life!  Are you kidding?!

Especially because its a reality TV show... that basically means that they create drama that revolves around your life, and at some point, I would probably become emotionally scarred from it, so no, I would not want her dissecting my life and then putting it back in her image, whatever that may be.

Come on people, are you really that unhappy?

It is very motivating.  :-)  I definitely agree!  I love it! (Especially combined with the fact that I was wearing a pair of jeans that now fit well instead of snug).

I just feel awkward when people say something in front of a large crowd of people, perhaps because it also means admitting that I was larger before?  (Although on an athletic frame, 170 really isn't THAT big...)

I think that the protein is meant for recovery in the long run.  Like, if your muscles are consistently sore and having a hard time recovering for your next workout, adding in protein (mixed with carbs) is a good idea.

generally, when I do some activity for about 30 min or less, I don't need anythign to get me going.  However, when I work out longer than that, I generally need something like a granola bar, but a lot of times, if I eat my whole breakfast beforehand, I'm either hungry afterwards, or my stomach hurts during the workout.

Find what works for you :-)

Hey! I just want to say, IT CAN BE DONE!!!

I was kind of in your same situation.  After my sophmore year, I had gotten up to 170 lbs (I'm 5'6" and very athletic, so it wasn't HUGE for me).  I had started college at about 152-153ish.  Now, one and a half years later, I've dropped about 20 pounds.  (The scale this morning said 151, and right before lunch, I hopped on, just to see, and it said 149.5! I have not been in that range since my junior year of HS!)

Anyway, I just wanted to say that you can do it!  Some tricks that I have found really work for me...

walk EVERYWHERE! An hour of walking burns somewhere in the range of 350 calories. Personally, my walk to school is between 20 and 30 minutes, depending on which part of campus I'm on.  My friends think I'm crazy, because I don't take the bus, but serious, the bus takes just about as long.

Pack your lunch. Period. And breakfast and dinner if you need to.  Its so much easier than trying to pick healthy options out of a cafeteria or restaurant.

Go easy on the weekends.  If you drink, don't binge drink.  2 drinks really is enough to have a good time when your blood sugar is low anyway from watching calories :-)

Message me if you want to.  I've still got about 10 pounds to go.  :-)

I think better daily as well, in terms of muscle recovery, etc.  However, if you only have time on two days to really hit up the gym, can you do other things?  Can you walk someplace instead of drive? Can you park 10 min away and walk the extra distance?  Take the dog for a walk? do sit ups while watching tv? etc, etc?

um, she's been on CC for 3 days.  Your metabolism DOESNT slow down after 3 days, it slows down after months and months, if you consistently eat under 1200.

Just make sure that per week, you are getting at least 1200x7 calories if you are worried about it

Weight Loss Question! Sep 24 2009

with only 3 days down, I think its too early to decide whether this is sustainable for you or not.  If you find yourself remarkably hungry at 1350, you should really consider upping your calorie count.  I'm 21, I weigh 152 (as of this morning... woo!) I started off at 170, and I exercise quite a bit, but I eat 2000 calories a day and lose on that... my point is that at 152, my sedetary calories are about at 1800, and light activity is more like 2100.  I'm better you should be more like 1600 for a deficit of 500 cal/day

If the slice of pizza is about the size of a slice of papa john's, then I count it as about 300 calories.  I just limit myself to 1 or 2 slices, and try to add in salad or something.  Good luck!

Weight Loss Question! Sep 24 2009

to answer your original question- if you aren't hungry, I wouldn't eat. period. (unless you have had an eating disorder where you no longer register hunger at all, etc)

However, 1100 calories isn't really a good target, so don't make it your target, just try to eat a little more tomorrow. If your target is 1400 and you didn't make it, you only ate 1100, then the next day, its okay to go up to 1700, or 3 days of 1500, etc.  As long as it evens out, no one expects you to eat exactly 1400 calories every day.

Weight Loss Anyone hear Science Friday last week? Raw foods vs. Cooked Sep 10 2009
14:30 (UTC)

gi-jane- that article is interesting, but the argument isn't just to cook your carrots, its about the surface area of the carrot in the water.  They are saying to cook your carrots whole, because then that nutrient doesn't leak out.  They don't actually say anything about cooking vs. raw.

I mean, honestly, this isn't going to affect my eating habits I don't think.  I mean, I enjoy things with fiber more than things without, and I'll continue to eat the cheapest, most available fruits/veggies/produce in my kitchen, whether they are raw or not, because when it comes down to it, just eating fruit/veggies is better than potato chips or popcorn, etc.

Well, I wasn't really saying that I wanted to go and eat all raw food.  I will eat my meat cooked, thank-you-very-much.  And its certainly not natural.  But I thought that the actual studies between processed and unprocessed food were interesting, and I'm sorry, but it gives the story a massive amount of accredition when it winds up on NPR.

First of all, your self worth is not tied to your weight.

The sooner you get that into your head, the better.

Think of it as motivation, but honestly, skinny people are no more happier than heavier people.  In fact, I find that I am more likely to eat healthily when I am happy with myself than when I am hating myself.  When I'm down, its too easy to say "screw it" and go binge on chocolate.

So chin up.  You can do it.  Stay motivated, take a few small steps first, and then go with it.  And remember, you aren't doing this because you are worthless, you are doing it because you are worth it. You owe yourself a good, healthy life, and only you can give yourself that.

Weight Loss Metabolism Aug 25 2009

I also think that you tend to eat less when you don't wait until you are starving to eat.  Thus the 2-3 hours thing.  Its not that you "can" eat more, but that its easier to eat less, because you are eating when you are moderately hungry, not when you are ready to eat anything in sight.

keep it up.  Changes can be small, and sometimes they take awhile to manifest.  Also, depending on your body, you can gain water weight pretty quickly.  (example, if you had alcohol the night before, ate a lot of salt, or if it is ttom all affect how much you weigh each morning).

Don't be discouraged.  Keep counting, keep excersizing, etc.  Good luck!

I have a very different perspective on it...

Your friends aren't trying to kill your diet, or even put you down.  They are trying to do the opposite.  They are trying to give you a confidence boost, by telling you that you look great how you are.  Maybe instead of focusing on the looks part when you are around them, try to focus on the health part.  Try using health related words instead of calorie and weight related words.

It will shift the focus of the conversations.  Instead of you seeming to be unhappy with your body image (thus the dieting) you will seem to be health conscious (thus the lifestyle change)

Good Luck! And ignore the "you don't need to" part!  If you think you do, then that's all who matters
