I figured I'd throw my two cents in here, since I went through something similar . . .

I come from a really driven family, and was raised by a single father. I think he instilled in me that there was something wrong with jobs socially tied to women (teaching, nursing, etc.). At any rate, I always suspected I would like teaching and that I would be a good teacher, but it was a little too "feminine" and seemed like an under-achievement. So instead I ended up getting my master's in politics and working in journalism . . .

. . . AND THEN I decided I had to be a teacher :) Elementary no less. That was two years ago.

As it turns out, I LOVE my job, I'm pretty damn good at it, and my family has even come around to supporting me in my decision.

I will definitely confirm that its no walk in the park. I think I spend less than half of my day actually teaching . . . there's paperwork and assistance tasks and discipline (oh discipline!). Be prepared to deal with nasty kids and even nastier parents and coworkers.

Anyway, no one can make the decision for you, but if you feel it in your gut, then just go for it! You won't regret it :)

Carbivore- I wouldn't worry about it. For starters, we all have differents activity levels. But I notice that the real difference is that some people are much more descriptive in their entries than others, which makes them *seem* like they ate more. In any case, I also always feel like I eat more than other people on this thread. Oh well :P

Hi there. I thought I should throw my two cents in as I am also living in Korea.

Korea, and in particular my school lunches, have actually been something of a God-send for me. I'm recovering from a long history of eating disorders and I find the food here to be quite balanced overall. My school does a particularly good job with lunch. Sure, we have white rice everyday, and we have the occassional fried item, but I tend to just watch what others around me are eating. I've not lost weight in Korea (I'm trying to maintain), but I feel healthier here than I have felt in a while.

I recommend a few things. First, just watch what others around you are eating. Embrace kimchi and eat as much produce as you can (especially with summer around the corner- and cheaper prices!). Second, try the Korean stuff. Have fish and kim for breakfast. Try having chestnuts, or if you can handle it, roasted squid, for snacks. Try to replace soda and coffee (if you are addicted to them like me) with tea and soymilk. Learn how to make a few Korean stews at home.

Just a few thoughts. Best of luck! :P

First off, I third Corey. I don't post here all that often, but I am a frequent lurker. I, like many people here, are also recovering from an ED and don't like to see numbers. On a related note, I started posting my daily exercise, mostly as a way for me to keep track and motivate myself, but if it bothers anyone here, let me know and I'll stop. Thanks :P

Argh. Today was a really bang-up day. Got into a fight with my co-teacher and then ended up in the hospital (for being sick, not for the fight, haha). Still managed to do okay though, I think .. . minus a little ED behaviour relapse that I will not discuss here. Tomorrow will be better :D

Food:

Breakfast: Korean-style sushi roll with white rice, seaweed, and kimchi, coffee

Lunch: Cran-Apple Clif Bar

Snack: Oatmeal Raisin Clif Bar (yeahhh . . .)

Dinner: White rice with egg, mountain greens, radish, carrots, lettuce, and red pepper sauce

Snack: Coffee and Korean rice cookies

Side-note: Two Clif bars in a day does bad things to my digestive system. Maybe its all the white rice I'm eating. My body is in fiber denial . . . :(

Exercise: 30 min. yoga :P

I can't speak much for tea, but here is advice from a SERIOUS coffee drinker:

If you really want to try coffee, you need to make a small initial investment. Get a French Press- you can usually find a good one between $15 and $30. Then, get some quality coffee. Forget about Folger's and Maxwell House, its over-produced and tastes like dirt. Look to see if you have a local roaster. For starters, go for a medium blend.

Sugar- I personally don't like regular sugar because it doesn't dissolve well. You can always use splenda/sweet n' low, or if you want something more natural- agave nectar is good.

Creamer- Some people swear by milk, but I think it waters out the coffee a little. Try half and half or a flavored creamer like CoffeeMate (from the refridgeratored section).

My perfect coffee- Extra bold locally-roasted coffee from Sumatra or the African East Coast (Kenya, Tanzania, etc.). A spoonful of CoffeeMate, hazelnut or vanilla. And two packets of Splenda. Amazing . . .
