Hey all, RL has been keeping me from posting, but I wanted to thank Navane and everyone else who has been hosting these challenges. I'm finally at 163 (goal 165). This was a good tool for keeping me on track during the week, and I wanted you all to know it was much appreciated! |

| Weight Loss | How many calories should I be eating? | Jun 08 2009 12:42 (UTC) |

In a word, NO! Putting in your stats at moderate activity level and adding 300 cal for your age, you should be eating about 2600 calories a day. Even a sedentary short female should never go below 1200 calories. |

I'm 5'9", and I've never noticed anyone reacting to my wearing heels. I love being tall- my mother is short and I grew up watching her struggle to reach stuff/ reaching things for her. No thanks. Plus, I can carry a few extra pounds and people don't notice. |

If there's no bike path, I understand. It's when there's a clearly defined bike lane (with hefty fines for cars invading them) and they decide not to use it that I get torqued off. Plus, on winding mountain roads with blind curves, I have seen these people doing absolutely suicidal behavior. |

| Fitness | Hundred Pushups and Two Hundred Situps | Jun 03 2009 18:22 (UTC) |
|
The great thing about sit-ups, is that you can do other ab exercises and still do awesome on the APFT. To get better at pushups and running, you pretty much have to do pushups and run. On the other hand, there are exercises that are better than situps for improving situps. You're already doing planks, a couple other good exercises are flutterkicks and the Iron Cross (a modified leg lift (4 count)- lay on your back, legs at six inches, go all the way up, lift your butt, lower it, go back to six inches. All movement should be controlled. If you can do that properly at least 25 times you'll get a high score on situps). Crunches will get you there, too, but why do 100 crunch sets and spend a ton of time when you can do 25 Iron Crosses and hold the plank for two minutes and be smoked? BTW, good luck! Basic training is much easier, and you're less likely to get injured if you're already in shape! |

| Weight Loss | 5'8" to 5'9" | May 29 2009 04:43 (UTC) |

5'9", small frame, 168lbs, goal 165. I might go down to 160, but I'm concerned I'll lose the hard-earned muscle on my arms before my body will let go of the belly and thigh fat! At 145 I have a toothpick upper body and large thighs ( I look closer to a hourglass now than I did then) In high school I was 5'8" and 133 and people were concerned for my health. |

Original Post by rockrgrrrl: I'm 5'9" and 168lbs, pear shape. My jean size is 14 and I wear medium tops. ETA: I just realized I didn't answer all your questions. I was size 12 jeans at 145. With my build and occupation, it wasn't a good weight for me. (No upper body strength!) |

| Weight Loss | A Cheat Day | May 27 2009 03:29 (UTC) |
34 |
It might help if you think of it as a maintenance, rather than "cheat" day. On my cheat days I'll have a little extra dessert or soda or something greasy that brings my calorie count to the same level as my burn for the day. It helps me b ehave a little better the rest of the week. |

| Weight Loss | Do you think my routine will work? | May 27 2009 03:13 (UTC) |

At light activity, based on your stats, you should be eating 1448 a day according to CC. However, since you're under 21, add 300 cal to that, so 1750 is the minimum you should be eating to reach your goal by September. That's a conservative guess; you're probably closer to moderate activity level. Good luck! |

Your weight is fine as is, but you should really see a doctor about not having your period- that's not normal. |

First of all, you are not a bad person because you struggle with weight. You've already gotten yourself off to a good start, so give yourself a pat on the back. Okay, so you're averaging a little over 2lbs a month. That's progress, and slow loss is more permanent than quick loss. Also, your metabolism may be running slow because you're eating too little for your height, age and activity level. I'm guessing you're around 16. According to CC and your stats assuming a goal weight of 160, you should be eating 2090 cal a day to reach your goal by November 2009. CC tools aren't made for people under 21, so you may need even a little more than that. I hope this helps, and good luck! |

Original Post by justinpauldavis: Special Forces, huh? You're more likely a junior enlisted 11B than an SF weapons SGT with all that nonsense you're trying to feed us. BTW do you know what a 35N AD is? I said I was a desk jockey, not airforce. frokusblakah pretty much covered everything else. Go find yourself a copy of AR 600-9 and educate yourself, because you're sounding pretty ignorant. |

My supervisor was just telling me a story about a soldier he knew that could not pass tape to save his life. They put him through all the nutrition programs, the medical tests, and measured his body fat by immersion (unshockingly he passed with a HUGE margin). Finally the doctor he was seeing told the Army flat out there was no way he was going to get rid of the love handles without a concentration camp-style diet. So the Army was going to pay to give him liposuction so he could pass tape. That's probably not what you want to hear, but there really is no other way to 'spot reduce'. |

I'm no professional trainer, but why would you use the elliptical if you can run? I would think you would get more benefit from weight training your lower body in addition to running. Ditto on the good luck on the marathon! |

| Weight Loss | 500-800 calories a day? | May 22 2009 02:23 (UTC) |

I'm calling shenanigans on justinpauldavis. 42 miles a week? 6 mile long runs every day + weights- what MOS does that? You're certainly not keeping that up, not on the calorie intake you posted. I don't care how slow your metabolism is, a week or two of that will have you falling out. Even a 5' male as active as you burns over 2000 cal a day (base level!). My 31yo broken @$$ chairborne butt burns 2500-3000 a day, and I'm an inch shorter. Also, no particular food is going to slow down your metabolism. The amount of food you eat and your activity level is what matters. Either you burn more calories than you eat or you don't. Like dolphinclick said, if you're really maintaining on that little food, you probably have a serious medical issue that needs to be checked out. |

| Weight Loss | How am I supposed to lose any weight if I am hungry all the time? | May 21 2009 20:59 (UTC) |
10 |
For being sedentary, your calorie intake looks right. Also take into account your body is probably using energy to heal so that might be increasing your calorie burn. Things like soups and oatmeal are filling, and going up a 200 cal or so might help, too. Ideally, I dont think you should try to lose any weight until you're fully recovered from your surgery. |

| Maintaining | Trying to Maintain, 1500 calories not enough? | May 21 2009 18:24 (UTC) |
|
Yes, you should definitely be eating more. Based on your stats, at light activity your daily burn is 2030. This is just an estimate, since the CC calculators aren't meant for people under 21, so it's probably higher than that. Swimming at moderate or light effort burns about 539 cals per hour. That's in addition to your daily burn. I'm the same height as you, 31 yo, and 2000-2200 is my weight loss range. 2400-3000 is maintenance. I sit at a computer for my job, but I work out six days a week + walk about 3 miles every day. Bottom line: it may seem like you're eating a lot, but for your age, height, and activity level, you do need more food. Congratulations on reaching your goal weight! |

Healthy but high calories foods are your friend. Olive oil, nuts, low fat cheeses, and bananas are all foods that are good for you, but don't fill you up so much. |
