Hi caramelb8, welcome!

vegetarian geek - just for today i ate canned tuna, raw unsalted nuts, vegan breakfast "sausage" patties, raw broccoli & squash, and lentils.  actually, the vegetables and beans do have some carbs in them.  basically following the South Beach diet.  Oh, and drinking lots of water w/ everything.  let's face it......i didn't want to do something drastic like starve myself for a day because it would make me weak and my skin would look sallow.  so in order to still eat but (hopefully?) drop a lb or 2 overnight, this seemed like the best route.

If it makes you feel better, I am feeling absolutely tortured today because i can't eat what i want.  Yell  I have a photoshoot tomorrow for a magazine....and all day I've been exercising, eating only protein, and drinking green tea.  All I can think about is cookies and chocolate that I can't have!!  I swear every commercial on TV is about cookies.

Tomorrow after the shoot I have to buy something to satisfy my sweet tooth. I could never be a full-time model because I love food WAY too much.

BREAKFAST

- Omelettes! good protein/low-carb staple.

    - add low fat shredded cheddar & veggies like sweet yellow pepper, artichoke hearts, red onions, jalepenos

    - make it more fancy w/ goat cheese, fresh asparagus, tomato, smoked salmon

- Oatmeal - add apple chunks, bananas, a little brown sugar, and walnuts for protein. You can sub honey or lite maple syrup for the brown sugar.  it's so good, doesn't feel like you're forcing yourself to be healthy!

- Morningstar Farms Breakfast Patties - these are soo tasty! you can still feel like you're eating sausage in the morning and spoiling yourself. Plus you're getting protein without the calories/fat.

LUNCH/ DINNER

- Veggie Chili - great source for low carb/protein. I use (LOTS of) lentils, black beans, kidney beans, plus a can of crushed tomatoes. Add some pieces of squash, zucchini, red onion, and jalepenos.  plus chili powder of course ;)  I make a huge pot and freeze containers of it, then just microwave it as i want it.

- Seitan - This is a good protein source for vegetarians.  I'm not vegetarian, but I cook with this more often than w/ meat because i really like the texture of it.  Great for stir-frying with vegetables.

SNACKS

- Sugar-Free Jello - a good quick fix for a sweet tooth.

- Vita brownie (by Vitalicious) - I just discovered these...a full size brownie with 100 calories, 4g Protein, 190mg Potassium, 6g Fiber, and only 2g Fat! It's suprisingly moist.

- Raw Vegetables & Low-Fat Ranch or Bleu Cheese Dressing -  I've lost weight before eating this as lunch and as snacks. You get full pretty fast from the veggies and you're getting lots of nutrients.

- Kashi TLC cookies - you can feel a lot less guilty eating these when you're craving a cookie.

- Luna Bar - Caramel Nut Brownie  - I would buy this as a regular candy bar because it's so delicious. It's got caramel on top, and those chocolate crunchy things like they put inside ice cream cakes.

I just started trying to work out at home again as of Tuesday.  Problem with working out at home is disciplining yourself to keep doing it.  I do really well with it for about a week straight, and then i lose interest.  I can't afford a gym membership right now because I'm unemployed, so this is my only choice!  What I keep reminding myself is to keep moving for at least 40 mins....no matter what i'm doing, even if it's just jumping around.  that's what's going to burn the fat.

As for eating habits, i am combining my need for low carb with my need to save money.  I just made a HUGE pot of veggie chili using lentils, kidney beans, and black beans. I froze most of it for later, because i have a bunch of fresh veggies in my fridge.  The last time I started to successfully lose weight was when i ate a lot of raw vegetables every day.

I've been equal parts good and bad this weekend. I definitely drank all day and night of the entire weekend.....BUT....I only ordered flavored vodka with soda water.  Which is a big deal because I am usually a beer drinker.  I can't quit drinking for South Beach like I'm "supposed to" because it's really my only vice left, and you gotta have somethin, right?? haha

On the positive side, I was really careful of what I ate. Even when I went to Coney Island which is like all carnival-type food, my friend reminded me that I could get a shish kebab instead of a hot dog and it would fit in my diet! And I ordered a burger last night but took off the bun and ate it like a steak. I also gave my fries away to my friends and didn't eat a single one.

Exercise-wise, I went to 3 outdoor concerts and did a LOT of walking around. So much that I got a charley horse in my leg at some point. I think I look a little bloated from the heavy drinking this weekend, but my clothes fit me a little better. I feel like I'm on the right track!

yeah that's a good point danielle....I feel like i need to LEARN how to eat right. It's *supposed* to be a lifestyle change. If we all lose weight and go back to eating the way we used to, of course it will come back again!!  It's been a big trial and error for me, but I'm trying to figure out what my body responds to.

I think the SB diet begins as a diet because you are depriving yourself of carbs.  And your body does need *some* carbs for energy.  But I like the idea of adding them back on gradually to test how it affects you. It's like cleansing your body and building back gradually.  Being healthy ultimately is about eating everything in the right balance, not about permanently depriving yourself.

Hi! I'm 27, my CW is 143-145 lbs(depending on the day) and GW is 127.  I was 145-150 in high school, then i lost 20 lbs in college.  Out of nowhere, I gained all of it back in the last 2 years.  Seriously bumming me out.  All my efforts of calorie-counting and exercise haven't had any effect, so I'm trying the South Beach diet as of yesterday.

But in Phase 1, doesn't a lot of sources of fiber count as carbs? Where can i get fiber from that's not grains?  I've heard you get sick of eating eggs, haha.
Weight Loss Is my scale playing a dirty trick on me? Jul 17 2008

really? I never thought about it getting messed up, I should try stepping on it twice next time. I hate to be disappointed though....I'm pretty sure it's me, not the scale.

I hate to even look because if i've actually drank all the water I'm supposed to, I'm heavier.  AND I'm building muscle from exercise.  Looking at the scale makes me feel like I've gotten nowhere.

I've encountered the same thing, which is why I'm resorting to this.  For almost 2 months I counted my calories every day and ate healthy, practically vegetarian. Plus I've been exercising regularly 6 days/wk.  But like you, my weight is fluctuating near the weight I was at the start. One day I'm 2 lbs lighter, the next day I'm 1 lb over my start weight.  I know some of it is muscle but come on!!!

My conclusion is that the calorie counting isn't working because i'm eating too many carbs.

It's hard because I work 9-5....so having to either remember to bring lunch AND snacks AND water.....or keep leaving the office to get them and spending lots of money.

So you're at the end of Phase 1 right now?  has there been any changes in your weight yet?

I'm having the major scale fluctuations too! It's especially discouraging when it happens after i've done twice the calorie burning than usual.  i understand it's probably water weight plus muscle building which weighs more.  but still....

i noticed from my food logs on here that i eat way more carbs than protein and i don't drink enough water.  so i'm going to try cutting back my carbs and more H20.  i'm staying within my calorie range but still not losing weight, so i think it has to do with the *type* of foods i'm eating.

I'm with ya!

For awhile i was keeping careful track of my weight on this website and logging it every day.  i was even willing to accept a little bit of yo-yoing....i figured that was normal when you first start trying really hard to get in shape.  FINALLY....I had lost 4 lbs for several days straight and i felt like i was on my way.  But after another 2 days of eating the same way (AND exercising)....i had GAINED 5 lbs!!  it was very discouraging and made me want to stop checking my weight.

also, its not necessarily always a good gauge because if you're building muscle too, you could be losing fat + building muscle and weigh the same
