Weight Loss What are you people eating? Apr 19 2007

I think I may have taken a more laid back approach to this whole thing and I would like to share it with you.  I am not saying it works for everyone because I haven't even lost as much weight as you, but it is working for me and maybe would give you a jump start.

The trick I'm using is this: THIS IS NOT A DIET.  This is a lifestyle change and - being that life is unpredictable and never perfect - sometimes I am going to be below my suggested calories and sometimes I will be above a bit.

I should hold right around 1400, but some days I am just not hungry and others I am starving or we are going out or gathering for a special occasion.  What I try to do is be aware of my portions and stock up on the healthier stuff and then just have a bite or two of the not-so-good-for-me stuff.  I also don't beat myself up or pack up and go on a guilt trip if I eat a little icecream or a chocolate or two.  I am LIVING, not just existing to lose weight.  I don't do it every day, but if it's something that REALLY sounds good or that has sounded good for a while - I'll have a smidge of it!  Not a LOT of it, but some.

From what I understand, the body gets used to the same calories or exercise and plateaus.  I like to believe (and it may absolutely prove to be wrong, but it's working right now) that I am keeping my body on it's toes by not putting exactly the same calories or foods in it every day.  I just try to keep every few days to a week averaging 1400.

So maybe you can up your calories just a bit and jump start your metabolism?

I have also come to LOVE carrots.  They are convenient since you can buy bags of baby carrots, portable in a zip lock baggie, sweet, crunchy, take some chewing so they aren't just gone in the blink of an eye, provide good fiber and cost very few calories for a pretty full feeling.  I also have started adding a hard boiled egg to by breakfast because protien sticks with you a while and that is a good healthy choice.

I know I ramble a bit, but I hope this helps! :)

I know I don't post often (I can only check at work and by the time I've caught up, it's time to work again), but I am glad you are all here on this group.  You all have been inspirational.  It's good to know that everyone here is facing a lot the same things.

I have mixed feelings about my news, but I only have .7 lbs. to go before I'm not "over 200" anymore.  I feel like I'm about to be an orphan!  Not that I am upset about the weight loss, but I don't feel like I am a strong enough poster to start the new thread... what if nobody picks it up?  Then I'll be left hangin'!

Anyway - Yay itsmy for your resistance to the powers of pizza!  Cats - I am glad you are okay.  Rockin' - I believe we are all making a lifestayle change and no lifestyle is so rigid that a few calories here or there occasionally will end the benefits.  Besides, all I hear about sticking to an extremely rigid number per day tells me it may lead to a plateau... so I have been wondering if I keep my calories between 1200 and, say, 1600 (my optimum is right around 1400) with the goal being to have it all even out to 1400 per day over a week - would that keep my body guessing enough to not plateau and still lose weight?  It's kind of been my experiment so far...

I will mis this board and may sneak on anyway, but I just wanted to thank everyone for being so open and supportive of each other and  (even if I'm quiet a lot of the time) me!
Weight Loss Difference between being hungry & being full Apr 18 2007

This may or may not be right, but when I first started doing this, my body was telling me it was hungry at the end of the day.  I decided to listen to my body with boundaries - I would have a small, healthy snack to appease the hunger and wouldn't stress myself about being a little bit over calories.  Slowly but surely, the calories it was suggested I hold to becamse easier and easier to handle and now some days I don't even realize I've eaten too few!

I think you have to think about this as getting healthy, not a diet.  You can't "cheat" on a lifestyle and if you allow yourself a day you go over now and then because it's a special occasion (holidays etc.) and let yourself eat a snackie when you get the growls, you will feel less deprived and more like this is a permanent change.

Baby steps! :)

Dreamweaver - I sure look forward to the answer!  I am going to be way short again today.

I have sworn off candy bars, etc. since starting this, but walked to the convenience store in search of calories last night and STILL ended up short (because I didn't think of the calories needed for the 2 mile walk until too late)!  I was STUFFED!  I don't know how to fix it so that I don't eat bad for me stuff and still make up the difference without spending the entire night way too full AND eating the whole evening away... :(

My mom laughs at me because when I first started I was complaining about how hard it is to survive on just 1400 calories - now I am struggling to get up to my 1200 in (or the equivalent if I have excersized).  I don't get off work until 5:00, so any calories to be made up have to happen in a short amount of time.  If we can eat later if we stay up later, though, I'm golden since I stay up till midnight or thereabouts.

I am glad I am not the only one and look forward to any ideas anyone may have!  Thanks!

I hope so because I managed to put on 2.6 pounds this week!  I will admit I went over my calories on Easter, but not enough to account for over 2 pounds and I was good the rest of the week.  I was wondering that myself this morning.  I can't wait to see what others think!

Oh! And if you want to "choclate graze" get a package of m&m's and then eat them slowly throguhout the day.  You have to budget because I think it's about 260 calories, but if you are a chocoholic, it might help the cravings throughout the day without feeling deprived.  I sometimes bring just one of the fun paks with me to work (considerable less calories) and have it over the course of the day so I am not tempted to have too many. I know if that's all I get I ration and savor them more! :)

kittie - I weigh once a week.  It helps me keep an eye on any "upward trends" and nip them before they become problems (as I'm afraid they would with only weighing once a month) but I don't obsess about the more frequent day to day fluctuations (which I know I would if I weighed every day).  You do what works best and is most comfortable for you - that's just what works for me.

And GOOD LUCK!!

I woudl first like to say that I think the "tub of lard" comment was meant to shock her into motivation.  I don't agree with the method or the phrasing, but I really don't think any harm was meant.

juvarni - Think of this as a lifestyle change.  There is room in a new lifestyle for months when you may feel like less exercise (I know I like to "hibernate" in the winter and have  ahard time excersizing or really even wanting to move).  There is room in a new lifestyle for holidays.  And that doesn't mean a string of "no no, I love green veggies SO much more than sweets" and feeling denied, just try to keep it moderate and get back to eating right and exercise tomorrow, ot the next day.

Try to be aware of future holidays.  Thanksgiving and Christmas can be a particularly long and tough time, but if you stay on track MOST of the time and give yourself permission ahead of time to stray from the beaten path and to not panic if the scale doesn't act exactly the way you want it to for that little bit of time, maybe you won't feel as defeated.

As long as you consider it more "getting healthy" and allow yourself a little wiggle room rather than "dieting" and considering it blowign your diet or failing, it tend not to bring so much pressure to bear and is a little easier to keep your chin up.

Good luck and lean on us here if you need anything at all! :)
Weight Loss Weight Loss Surgery Apr 02 2007

My step father looked into the lap band surgery, but his reasons weren't because he was looking for an easy answer.  He has quit smoking and quit drinking all on his own or through step prgrams and I think if he was a guy into short-cuts he would still be doing both.

He was looking becaus eof the attending medical conditions that went with his obesity.  He suffers horribly from sleep apnea that causes all kinds of additional problems that then increase the weight problem.  It was a vicious cycle and, despite diets, one he has struggled with his whole life with no lasting results.

He wasn't looking for an easy answer, just a disruption in this destructive cycle so he stood a fighting chance.

I have discovered two fabulous finds - sugar free jolly ranchers and Yoplait Light & Thick Key Lime Pie flavoer.  The jolly Ranchers taste just like the real thing and the yogurt - yummmm!  I kept expectnig to taste a little graham cracker crust - which may not be a bad idea (to crumble a graham cracker on top)!

I also understand that if the "light" options don't satisfy then you are still left craving.  I have found that a pack of M&Ms are about 240 or 260 calories.  That may seem like a ot, but if you stretch it over a couple of days, it will satisfy AND not kill you counts for the day!

Finally, a summer favorite - strawberry shortcake.  I have been making it with sugar free shells or angel food cake, sugar free glaze and fat free whipped topping.  You have to watch your counts during the day, but you can get a pretty good size portion for only 200-300 calories AND pretty low fat too!

Good for you for alling the game early.  Believe it or not, you are lucky he showed his butt this early in your relationship.

That comment wasn't just mean or uncalled for, it was abusive.  Regardless of what the fight or argument was about, making thos kinds of cruel comments meant to tear you down is abuse pure and simple.  Any time someone uses words to try to gain submission, it's bad news.  I don't believe the comment was even a true opinion so much as an insecurity of yours he could exploit to gain control.

You are stronger and safer having called his bluff.

Yay on the weight loss!  Don't worry about the future or finding someone.  When I look at my wedding pictures I cringe at how big and soft I look, but my husband said he almost cried he thought I looked so beautiful.  Wait'll he sees the new and improved me! :)

Keep your chin up and keep getting healthy.  All things happen in their own time and obviously he was not the right person and the right time.

Today is a red-letter day!  I have lost 10 pounds!

I have been a little worried because just as I started the excersizing, I woke up unable to get out of bed for the pain in my neck.  I had to put all my good intentions on hold while the doc had me on muscle relaxers and waiting for xray results.  Now the pain is letting up and the xray came back okay, so I am going for a walk again tonight.  I'll probably lay off the upper body and sit-ups for a while, though, just to be sure the pain is gone.

Anyway, I keep trying to remember that I am making a lifestyle change and not just dieting.  AND that - while I do very much want to lose weight - I am in this to be a healthier me.

Keep up the good work everyone!

I have to admit to being a long time (since Edward Scissorhands and Benny & Joon) Johnny Depp fan, but him as a pirate... he could kidnap me anyday!  I coudl definitely spend my days on a ship in the islands drinking rum! :)  Besides, where else to you get to mix that many patterns and wear that much jewelry at once and not be looked at funny?

The best spokesperson ninjas have some up with are 3 elementary school kids and one of the slowest land animals on earth!  Johnny is WAY cooler!

On a more serious note - pirates truly were the first "employers" if you will to offer health plans, profit sharing and to have a bit of a union, so they had some good and valid contributions to society...

But mostly because Johnny Depp is a HECK of a hot pirate!

All of my videos and books must be in alphabetical order and I have my books separated by "fiction", "non-fiction", "reference", "childrens", and "periodicals".  (I don't have enough movie storage space to arrange by type of movie!)

I also HATE to have my food touching on the plate!  There are very few exceptions - liek Thanksgiving - but mostly it irks me and I won't eat the touchy parts.

Other than that I'm pretty okay.  My husband is a TOTAL neat freak, though and obesses about laundry until every item in the hosue is clean aside from what we are all wearing! :)

Braum's is some good stuff, but my absolute favorite is Taco Bueno Mexi Dips and Chip and a couple of the party size tacos (they're smaller than the regulars).  I LOVE them!  Fortunately, there aren't any Taco Buenos anywhere NEAR Indiana! :)

I also have a weakness for Popeye's Chicken - chicken, red beans & rice and their biscuits.  Again, good thing I live 30 miles from teh nearest one...

Weight Loss I Ruin Everything on the Weekend! Mar 19 2007
20:15 (UTC)
6
My husband is home on the weekends and we went out this weekend to dinner and drinks with a firend and then went to another friend's house the next day for a sporting event with a taco bar.

I was careful abotu what I ordered at the restaurant and planned ahead for the taco bar.  Since I knew there would be chip-munching so on my way I picked up some fat free pretzels and baby carrots.  I looked at the cheese dip and for 45 calories of 2 Tbsps. I coudl dip my pretzels in cheese!  I also picked up some light ranch on the way and made a great big taco salad (easy on the taco - big on the salad).  Finally, I picked up a small bag of m&ms to uch on or suck on slowly while desserts were going on... I managed to inadvertently come in 100 under my points for the day!

Dinner was harder and I just focused on ordering healthy and semi low cal and low fat.  I decided to box half before I ever started and then ate slowly.  I also decided not to beat myself up if I went over my limit a bit, but to just hop right back on the next day.  I think it worked out okay.

I don't have computer ot internet on the weekends either, but I write everything down so I am still accountable and then log in all on Monday.  That way I don't think I can get by with going crazy because I KNOW I'll have to face up to exactly what I ate.  I have a special note book with sea turtles (my favorite) on it just for this purpose.

Finally, I just keep saying to myself over and over that nothing tastes as good as being thin feels.

I hope some of that helps!

Today is a week since I logged on for the first time.  Can anyone tell me... do you stop benig hungry?  I have been trying to hold myself to the recommended limit of calories, but I am STARVING!  I manage to go over by about 200-300 each day on average.

I know that I have been taking in too many calories - that's how I got here - but if you are REALLY hungry, shouldn't you listen to your body and feed it something?  I feel like I don't want to cross that thin line between losing weight and so depriving my body that I end up cutting too much back.

One way or another, I have 80 pounds to lose and am determined to do it.  I'm just hoping my body adjusts so I'm not miserable for the next 9 months to a year! :)
Weight Loss I wish I could go.... (Question about constipation) Mar 14 2007

My mother is a nurse and they give people in the hospital on lots of pain med (that will constipate even the mosst regular person) Colace.  You can pick it up in the pharmacy.  It is not a stimulant, just a stool softener.

If you wanted to use an enema and then follow it with a couple of days of Colace until any changes you make to your diet kick in you may get to feeling better fast and the diet changes will help you continue.  But if it were to come up again, take a dose of Colace before it gets really bad.

I hope you get to feeling better!
