| The Lounge | Already? A stain on my wedding dress? | Apr 24 2008 22:09 (UTC) |

| My mom got lipstick on the dress she had made me 2 days before the wedding! It was silk dupioni and the stain was right in the middle of where my boob would go. We took it to a high-end dry cleaner, along with a small sample of the fabric and the lipstick and they got it out no problem. | |||

| You could try flavoured coffees -- hazelnut, etc... It might be easier to get away from using so much sugar if there was another flavour there. | |||
| Weight Loss | Does anyone have any tips to stop eating in the car? | Apr 22 2008 04:08 (UTC) |
12 |
| To get things started, maybe you should have your car detailed or do a really good job of vacuuming it yourself. That way you might feel reluctant to get it all crumby again.
Another thing I do is convince myself (by repeating over and over) that nothing tastes better than a great cup of coffee. And then I get exactly what I have convinced myself I am craving -- coffee! |

| The Lounge | Crazy neighbours rant | Apr 21 2008 00:39 (UTC) |
16 |
| Wow, sounds bad! My neighbours are completely oblivious to everyone else on the street, so I don't have to worry about them telling me I'm too noisy or something.
Another annoying thing: we only have street parking in our neighbourhood, and it can get pretty tight. The men (this seems to be a rather extended family, since there are several members from each generation) sit on their porch, or stand on the sidewalk and stare at me with their hands on their hips while I parallel park. Then they give each other knowing looks as I get out. intimidating! |

| I make an afternoon coffee my reward for getting through the day (maybe there is something wrong if I need a daily reward for doing my job...). I get one at about 2:30. I used to eat cookies as a reward so I'd say its a good thing. I convince myself that nothing would taste better than a nice hot cup of coffee with skim milk and that I am so lucky to have earned it. Sometimes it is a stretch. | |||
| Foods | a hamburger at a restaurant | Apr 15 2008 21:29 (UTC) |
3 |
| You could ask how many oz are in their burger. A lot of restaurant burgers are 8oz (raw)! And most restaurants don't use lean ground beef, they use chuck or something similarly fatty. For 80% lean meat I got 204 calories for 1/4 lb. Ground beef can be up to 30% fat, by law, and it makes a tastier burger that way! If the restaurant uses 8 oz of 80% lean beef, you are looking at at least 400 calories for the patty alone. | |||

| Foods | An oz of meat?? | Apr 15 2008 04:13 (UTC) |
4 |
| Or, look at the package.
If your package had 1 lb of ground chicken in it -- (454 g) and you ate a quarter of the package, then you had... about 113 grams of ground chicken. (Or so. My mental math skills are weak. It is late.) Then, when you go into the food log, where most meats are in 85g portions, you can enter 1.25 portions, or whatever you had. Less accurate than a food scale, but it should work if you are cooking at home. And if you are eating out, are you really going to bring a food scale with you? Ha! Can you imagine! Also, it might sharpen the old math skills. You never know! |

| Hey, I just checked out "how to be a scene kid" on Wikihow, and they actually recommend adding extra letters when you are typing. It's an official mandate!
Those extra silent letters remind me of all these Korean kids I teach -- they always pronounce silent e's, AND they spend all their free time and all their time that shouldn't be free (i.e. sleep time and homework time) on various versions of myspace. |

| Foods | Can I store things like oatmeal and cereal in the fridge? | Apr 15 2008 01:08 (UTC) |
3 |
| Actually, it is better to store whole grain things in the fridge. Because they contain a bit more fat, things like WW flour, barley, and brown rice can go rancid (after 4-6 months) if you don't refrigerate them. I have heard that rancid fats are one of the worst things for your health. | |||
| Foods | I'm having trouble working in vegetables | Apr 14 2008 17:49 (UTC) |
11 |
| Some veggies actually last for a really long time in the fridge. Think pioneer diet. Cabbage, beets, rutabagas all last a really long time. And, they are cheap.
For instance, coleslaw is delicious, if you make it with lower-fat vinaigrette instead of mayo, it is healthy, and a head of cabbage is cheap, too. I'm sure you lose some nutrition, but I have seriously had a head of cabbage in my fridge stay good for 2 months. It is also the kind of thing that you can pack for lunch and it isn't all soggy and gross by noon. It gets better as it sits around. |

| I have very early memories of being worried about my weight. I remember overhearing my parents talking about how they should tape me. I was sure they meant they were going to tape up my belly with masking tape to make it smaller. Much later, I realized they were talking about recording my cute voice! | |||
| Weight Loss | Scales? | Apr 14 2008 03:43 (UTC) |

| I would just pick one and go with that scale. I know scales have to be recalibrated once in a while, and I'm guessing the more people that step on them, the more often they need to be recalibrated, so that's a vote against the gym scales. But they are probably higher quality than your average home scale to begin with. | |||

| I second the fish patties idea.
Take 10-12 oz cooked or raw fish, minced, and mix it with cooked leftover brown rice, (about 2 cups), but proportions are not too important here. You can mix in minced garlic, minced green onion, or minced ginger and soy sauce (for an asian twist) (but does soy sauce have wheat in it?). Other possible add ins: finely minced red pepper, chili flakes, fresh herbs... anything! Add half a beaten egg. Form into cakes -- the size can range from 2 inches across to 4 inches accross. Dip them in cornmeal (not even a neccessary step) and cook on a frying pan coated with Pam or a bit of oil. YUM! |

| Weight Loss | Too much healthy food today | Apr 12 2008 20:58 (UTC) |

| I have to agree with post #1. It sounds like you spent all day avoiding the fact that you wanted to eat something tasty and rich. I usually build in something 'rich' when I'm planning my day so that I know I'll get some *satisfaction*. Otherwise I keep eating and never feel satisfied.
Things like: poached shrimp, 1 or 2 small imported shorbread cookies, 1 or two slices of proscuitto, etc... On the positive side of your day, at least your fibre intake will be good! |

| I love shredded cabbage stirfried with shiitake mushrooms, minced garlic, minced ginger, a drop or two of sesame oil, ground black pepper, and some light soy sauce. You can add finely minced raw chicken, shrimp, pork, or a mixture, and it tastes like the filling from chinese dumplings.
I also love cole slaw. You can make it low in calories by using just a bit of light mayo and mixing it with low fat yogurt. |

| Re: crabs in mussels --
When I worked in a seafood restaurant, one of our big suppliers had a batch of clams and oysters that were just full of these little crabs. So the owner got a great deal on these crabby bivalves, and proceeded to convince the customers (and other wholesale accounts) that these crabs were rare delicacies and they should pay extra for the priviledge of eating crunchy clams... It worked! Eew! Crunch Crunch! |
