Weight Loss Plateau VS. Doing something wrong...... May 17 2008

Sounds like you might be too obsessed about it.

Try upping your calories for a day every now and then.  Or add a cheat meal every two weeks or something.  You don't want to do the same thing every day, or your body gets used to it, and adjusts to maintain at the level you're at.

Also, you said you were eating 1850/day without exercise and you switched to 1600 with exercise.  Are you including eating back any of the calories from the exercise?

Weight Loss CLA for Waist Reduction May 15 2008

I've used it intermittently, and it does seem to work for me.  Be aware though that it is not going to help you lose weight.  What it does do (for some people at least) is affect how much of the weight you lose comes from fat.  And it's not a huge amount for most people.

Personally, I'm taking two pills (1000mg blend containing 740mg CLA) a day which slightly surpases the amount used in studies.  I'm using the Trader Joe's version right now, though I've used other brands.  You can certainly find cheaper online.  Make sure you find Tonalin CLA though.  As far as I know, that's the only blend that has been tested.

At the moment, I'm trying a CLA+Sesamin stack (2xCLA+1xSesamin 3x per day).  From what I've been reading, the CLA decreases trygliceride uptakes and the Sesamin increases fat oxidation creating a synergistic response.

There have been some side effects associated with CLA from long term use.  Personally, I plan on using it for 1-2 months at most, as its effectiveness decreases as your body gets used to it anyway.

Weight Loss body fat 33%!?! May 15 2008

I use several website calculators (each with different formulas), a body fat scale, a body fat hand monitor, and a self caliper device.  The body fat scale varies based off of hydration, but I try to use it once a day when I'm fully hydrated.  All of them are within 2-3% of each other.  When I first started, however, I was taking the measurements in the wrong areas.  Read the directions thouroughly and find a site that details precisely where to measure each body part.  The difference between measureing over your belly button and an inch below greatly affects the accuracy of these formulas.

When I had my wisdom teeth out two years ago (before I was counting), I ate pretty much nothing but ice cream and my muscle milk protein shake for the first two days.  This is a specific situation when protein supplements are very useful.

I also had jello once.  And Cream of wheat.

Personally, I eat it with mayo and bread.  Back when I tried lo-carb tho, I mixed it with salsa.  It sounds weird, but trust me, it's pretty good.  I think I used pace picante.

Being big or being small doesn't change who you are on it's own. Take a look at how you've changed. Being healthy doesn't mean you can't have any fun. Okay, you shouldn't be drinking, but at your age, you shouldn't any way.

Some people change their whole view of the world, and all they thing about is being healthy. Live a little. When you go out with your friends, DON'T bring up what you can and cannot eat. Just find something healthy wherever you go, or bring something of your own. A lot of people get upset when you're talking about your diet all the time.

I would do things that scared me and learn from every experience I had. I would never be scared to try new things and make a fool of myself at all!

It sounds like you've become more self conscious by becoming thin. If you didn't care about making a fool of yourself while you were bigger, why do you care now?

Weight Loss Why do people insist on calling them "Cheat" days? Feb 20 2008

Original Post by cfeltontufty:

it's more about the attitude behind the words then the actual words used. If you look at it as a "cheat day" you have not had a paradigm shift to a new life style and are still just "dieting". In having a life style change one realizes that the goal is to eat healthy 85% of the time. There are birthdays, party's, night's out with friends, football party's...the list goes on. If one is "dieting" they use this day as an opportunity to over indulge. A person who has truly had the paradigm shift will instead have the "unhealthy" food in moderation and move on the next day without guilt or "making up" for the extra calories they may have had the day before.

...

That's how you view people who look at it as a "cheat day".   I view my regular days as a weightloss diet that is a subset of my overall diet.  My cheat days allow me to cheat on my weightloss diet, but not on my overall diet.   And if I eat 'properly' six days a week, that's 85% of the time.  And viewing it as cheating satisfies that part of me that likes to be naughty.  I think everyone has that to some degree-- it's part of temptation.  And when I say overall diet, I'm not looking at it as something that's temporary.   I've gone off counting for a time, and I've done a short bulking phase, and I've still maintained most of my healthy habits.  Granted, I probably don't eat as healthy as I should by far.

But I think the main reason that it would be silly to stop referring to them as cheat days is because that is the term used throughout the dieting world.  There are always new people coming to these forums, and many of them have done research elsewhere as well.  It's like saying we should start referring to calories as Calories from now on. (After all, the 'calories' on the nutritional labels are kilocalories which are supposed to be written as Calories.  1000 calories = 1 Calorie.)

Weight Loss self-conscious Feb 07 2008

You are the people that make us feel uncomfortable. It's like " He's looking at me... Why is he looking at me? - looks at self - Okay, good... he stopped. .... ooh nu He's doing it again.... >_< - leaves - "
It's unnerving/disturbing to get eyeballed every so often. Say something! Or don't stalk girls at the gym. Some girls are too self conscious to know they're eye candy. They just think you're a stalker. Or can't keep from staring at their most unflattering attributes.

That's a shame.  Most people don't stare at unflattering attributes.   I know when I'm at the gym, and there's an attractive girl nearby, I tend to look over at her every now and then.  I can't help it; it's my nature (and human nature in general).  Yes, I could go over and speak to the girl, but a) if I'm in a relationship I'm not going to, nor am I not going to look, and more importantly b) at the gym, I'm not in a talkative mode. I try not to stare, so much as glance over every now and then.

Personally, I always like to assume the best, so whenever I notice a girl (or a guy)looking at me, I take it as a compliment.  It makes me feel better than wondering what they're staring at.  When I was younger, I wasn't sure, but at some point, I made a conscious choice to always assume the best...unless they're pointing at me and laughing.  But luckily that doesn't happen very often.

Fitness How to increase weights/strength when lifting? Feb 07 2008

What I do is start at 3 sets of 8 reps.  I increase up to 3 sets of 12 reps, then I increase the weight and drop back down to 3 sets of 8 reps.  Sometimes I can go straight from 3x8 to 3x12 at a given weight, other times I have an intermediary step of 12-12-8 or something similar.  The main thing is to increase either rep count or weights every time so I'm on an upwards trend.

Weight Loss Supposed fat loss supplements Jan 23 2008

Right, if you're looking for a wonder drug, or even one that lives up to it's own hype, you may as well throw your money away.  Even steroids aren't as effective as the media portrays them.

They are supplements, not replacements.  If you diet properly and exercise properly you'll see results.  If you do so with the right supplements, you'll see better results.  But you won't see amazing results, and without diet and exercise you probably won't see any results.

Since the op is looking for a recommendation, I will mention that I've been taking sessamin for almost a month now on the recommendation from a friend who swears by iti, and I've been eating rather poorly (not terribly, but I wasn't maintaining a deficit, and probably went well over maintenance many many times during the holidays), and I've gained weight of course, but my muscle definition/tone has actually improved more than if I had been dieting.  And I didn't change my workout.  I'm going to give it another month eating properly and see how it goes.

I've tried several different fat loss supplements, and my conclusion is basically that they all are more useful for the occasional energy boost instead of fat loss.

There are some exceptions, such as CLA and Sessamin.   But these aren't fat loss like all of the latest supplements purport.  They affect body chemistry so your body doesn't store as much fat.  You won't see dramatic results in the short term, but in the long term you'll notice a difference in body fat %.

Weight Loss Would it be at all possible to get the abs I want through weight loss only..? Jan 21 2008

Endless crunches is the wrong way to go.  Try doing three sets of 15 on an 2-3 exercises every other day.  Add resistance if you can.

If you just keep adding on more crunches, you end up turning it into an aerobic exercise, which isn't really going to help you build any abs.  And you'll need at least a day rest every time.  But don't worry about building abs so much that they pop out.  Girls normally won't have that happen without steroids.

I haven't done it in years, but it's so much fun.  I remember being completely exhausted after a good day of climbing.  I don't think I've felt that way after any other workout I've tried.   Would love to get back into it, but I don't live near a climbing gym anymore, and I don't have any friends who are into it right now.

Foods How much daily protein? Jan 09 2008

1.2 per kg is a recommended minimum. (ie total weight in lbs div by 2.2 multiplied by 1.2) I've also heard x1.4

1g per lb is good for slowly putting on muscle. I did this during the holidays at maintenance, and it worked well for me.  Mind you, if putting on muscles is your goal, this is low.

That's normal.  You probably weren't getting enough fiber before, but now you are, especially with the amount of fruit you're having.

Too much fruit?  Well, there is for me, but it's perfectly healthy as far as I know.

Tumors require certain types of protein in order to grow, so if you have a tumor, cutting down on those proteins can help prevent tumor growth.  But that's not the same as those proteins causing tumors.

Weight Loss Eating every three hours a myth Nov 23 2007

Yes, it is a myth that your body will go into starvation mode if you don't eat every three hours.  But that myth evolved from misinterpreting what fitness experts were doing.  Eating small meals every three hours is ideal for protein absorption and fat burning.  But it is not worth it if you cannot constrain yourself to eating within your limits.

Fitness Routine Help Please! Nov 09 2007

You seem to be hitting everything.  Here's what you have for upper body:

back: row of some sort,  lat pulldowns
chest: bench press, incline fly, bent over fly, pullovers
shoulders: military press / lateral + front
biceps: curls
triceps: (overhead extension, skullcrusher, or dip)

It sounds to me like you're doing too much for a single session.  How long does it take you?  Try to limit yourself to about 45 minutes; after that testosterone levels drop (for both men and women), and you get significantly diminished returns.

Since you're trying to gain now, I would suggest switching to a 3 day split.  That way you can really push yourself on each muscle group, and have more rest before you hit the same group again.

Try this:

Day 1: Chest, shoulder and triceps.

Day 2: Back and biceps

Day 3: Legs

What are your goals?

If gaining mass is your goal, you may want to consider spreading it out more.

If losing fat is your main focus, then a total body workout 3x per week is okay.

Either way though, you should a) try to do a different exercise for each body part every 4-8 weeks, and b)  keep a journal of weights and reps on each exercise and try to increase either weight or reps on each exercise every week.

I just got my iphone a few weeks ago, and I've been using it with calorie-count a lot.  It's great being able to add things and look things up at the restaurant instead of planning ahead or finding out how off you were later.

There are definitely some parts that could be better for a mobile interface, like what amazon has done for their iphone site.

I know the feeling, but you'll be much better off if you take it easy.  At most, I would say get some walking in.  Exercising tears muscles, so that they'll rebuild stronger.  You don't need your body to be fighting off a virus AND repairing muscles.  It will make your recovery time that much slower.

Fitness A question for those who have HRM Sep 29 2007
21:14 (UTC)

My hrm is (alot) higher than cc for things like running outside and weightlifting.

It's usually pretty close for things like the elliptical or treadmill.

However, I have a polar F6 which doesn't calculate VO2max, though it does let you enter it if you've calculated it elsewhere, and that can affect the results a lot.

Motivation I Came Here Looking for Cameraderie and Inspiration, But... Sep 29 2007

Well, it is a public forum about weight loss, so to me at least, it was a given that there'd be a lot of people obsessing about their weight.  And  a lot of people don't know what a reasonable goal for them is.  You gotta just get past it.

Also, sometimes it is actually better for some people to set an unreasonable goal as most people never reach goals they set for themselves.  Some may keep pushing until they reach a more reasonable goal.  For others, they might stop early because of it, so it really comes down to the individual.

Fitness Should I be resting more? Sep 29 2007
19:49 (UTC)

If your goal is to gain muscle, then you need to be stressing the muscles, and giving them time to rest.  When you started out, you were probably stressing your muscles because you hadn't worked out before, so you may have seen some gains, but by now, your body has probably gotten used to it, so you should probably increase your weights, switch up your routine, and start resting in between (minimum one day rest between working out the same muscle group).  You will be limiting your potential gains by working out every day.

But on the other hand, if you're trying to lose fat, you may want to focus on that first and try to maintain the muscle you have.  It's harder to gain muscle while burning fat, though not impossible.

It's hard to give advice without knowing more.
