| Health & Support | Americas next top model? | Nov 21 2009 23:15 (UTC) |

Quite a lot of models in general are genetic anomalies. Fact of life. They're the 0.05% of the population with perfect skin, the perfect height, and the perfect bodies. Although half of the models on ANTM probably are on very strict diets, there will be a few of them that eat just like the rest of us and never put on anything due to a fast metabolism and good luck. I'm sure everyone on here has that one friend, that's as tall as a house and thin as a piece of paper, who eats like a horse and never gains weight. One of my closest friends in the world (not literally, she lives in trinidad now!) weighs 100lbs at 5'10, she eats in abundance but never puts on a pound (damn genetics). |

| Weight Loss | 5''7 / 5''8 young girls. whats your ideal weight? | Nov 21 2009 22:55 (UTC) |
1 |
I'm 5'8, medium frame, weighing in at somewhere over 154lbs (I don't know how much more, I can just tell I've gained weight...) I would, in an ideal world, weigh 126lbs. However, the lowest I've been in my 'adult' life (ie, since I was about 7 or 8) is 135, and I'd be quite happy to get back there, the healthy way! I still felt like I had weight to lose, but i did look a lot better. |

Thanks for your responses! goingtobegolden, pregnancy is most definitely not an option! (I didn't mean to call myself a blubberfish, either; I'm just so frustrated at the moment. The 'bad' weight has all piled on around my midsection; my legs and arms have both become more toned due to the exercise I'm getting, but my stomach's just becoming more and more wobbly; I have the belly of someone twice my weight, yet a quite small waist? Its really hard to explain, but my waist is 28 inches, then a few inches below, near my bellybutton, my circumference is about 34, I look distorted!) chrissy1988, unfortunately I don't have the healthiest metabolism, as a result of extreme dieting from a very young age (I went on my first diet at 8 due to childhood obesity, and haven't really stopped since then). I've tried in the past to fix this by eating 2000 calories a day for 2 months before the summer, but I kept gaining more and more weight, and did reach 160, the same weight I was when I was about 12 (admittedly, at 12 I was a good 4 inches shorter), panicked a bit, reduced down to 1600 again, lost 10lbs, then started this job. I was forced to start eating more food to keep my energy levels up, and started gaining weight again. My main problems, I think, are the mental aspects I associate with gaining weight. Even though my logical brain knows I do not look repulsive just because I've gained 10lbs or whatever, my emotional responses are telling me that I'm unlovable, I've got no self control and should be dead. I also know that these feelings wont go away just because I lose some weight, but I'd like to lose some just so I at least feel a bit more comfortable in my own skin, and feel healthier. |

pastmistakes; its not lovehandles! I have the same thing as the people above; you can feel the bone there? It is genuinely quite odd - my hipbone juts out, then at the joint it goes back in, then at the thigh it goes out again, and you can feel the bones are shaped like that!

Not quite right, but you get the idea! |

I won't be eating it, but there's a 'cheese and tomato pasta salad' in my shared fridge that has 560 calories, 300 of which are from fat, and 500mg sodium. My brother eats 2 of them at least a day as snacks, with salt on top, yet still has perfect health and is skinny as a rake! Crazy teenage male metabolisms... |

| Health & Support | Does anyone have "hypothyroidism?" | Jun 28 2009 02:10 (UTC) |

Did he test your T3 or T4? There are times when T3 can appear normal even if your T4 is through the roof I haven't officially been diagnosed with hypothyroidism, but I have all the symptoms, and my mother, grandmother, aunts and cousins all suffer from it, so I am almost certain that when my test results come back in 2 weeks, I will be officially diagnosed. Did you experience much weight gain before initial diagnosis? I've gained around 14lbs in 3 months from what was already a pretty hefty weight whilst eating 1500 calories daily and doing an hour of exercise daily - its very disheartening! |

I thought I'd update you all on how things are going... Anyway, its been 2 months now since my mum started the cambridge diet, and whilst I've been doing things the old school, slow way, she's been on the cambridge diet. Whilst I've lost 5lbs, she's lost 25. And now officially weighs less than me. A fact that she mentions on an hourly basis. I try not to get upset about it - after all, she's two inches smaller than me height wise - but she's now just taken to continuously pointing out that she can fit into smaller clothes sizes than me, and keeps pointing out the areas of fat on my body followed by the sentence 'you know, I can talk to my cambridge dietician about getting you involved' ARGH No sign of her stopping. She's 5'7 and 135lbs now. (I'm 5'9 and 143, for the record). |

thanks for your responses! gi-jane, I've just booked an appointment with my doctor in 2 weeks time so that I can discuss it *^.^*. smeek, I'm glad your own surgery went so well - I'm definitely going to look into surgery, but I feel there are so many taboos associated with it - i mentioned it to one of my friends a few weeks ago, and their first response was 'why would you want to look plastic'?

| Motivation | Addicted to that 'crunch' in food | May 05 2009 14:21 (UTC) |

Have you tried eating low cal crunchy foods? Stuff like celery, low cal crackers, maybe a cup of corn flakes, or an apple/pear? Even something like poppadoms aren't really high cal/high fat... I love that crunch too, and one of the things I sometimes do is to grill a tortilla so that it goes all crunchy with some tomato and spinach on, with a bit of low fat mozzarella... yum! |

I was completely the same! I gave up chocolate for lent (and lord do I love chocolate!) but managed to put on 3-4lbs during the 40 days. It is mainly because I was replacing my usual 'chocolate break' with a healthy snack that was the same amount of calories, but then because I never fulfilled my chocolate cravings I would be after more food 30 minutes later! I think the best way to help us help you would be to give us an idea of your diet at the moment - how many calories are you eating/what time/what types of food. Also, it might be an idea to start walking more again - not only does exercise burn calories, I also find it surpresses my appetite a little. And 10lbs in 6 months isn't that much - you'd be surprised how quickly it adds up, as that's a weight gain rate of .4lbs a week - adding less than 300 calories a day would cause you to gain that much in fat, and I'm willing to bet some of the weight is just waterweight also, that will fall off pretty quickly if you decide to try losing weight.
Hope something I've said helps! Ali |

I would love to model, but I would never in a million years be skinny enough for catwalk, nor 'curvy' (in the loosest sense of the word) enough to do VS. I volunteered for my college's 'model's program though, where I occasionally get a phone call to have some of the arts students draw/paint me or the photography students take photos, which is really fun. I haven't volunteered to be the life drawing model yet though - Id have to lose another 20+lbs before I let a roomful of people see me starkers! |

1200 for a grown man is NEVER going to be enough, especially if you're overweight. Unless you're on a program guided by a very good nutritionist, you're going to miss out on key vitamins, not to mention that although you're losing the weight thick and fast now, it will slow down very quickly after you've lost another 10-15lbs, not to mention that there are all sorts of health issues associated with losing the weight that fast. A diet shouldn't just be about losing weight. It should be preparing for a healthier future, eating the right things, and above all staying healthy. Whilst you may feel OK now, a deficit that big could damage your organs, as they cannot work in their normal manner on a large deficit such as that - how are they supposed to tick over when they're getting no energy? Think about it like a laptop - if you don't charge the battery efficiently, and keep only giving it little bursts of power, eventually the battery will wear down until it can only remained charged for 30-40 minutes at a time. Organs are the same - their efficiency and health can be damaged if their 'energy' is restricted. Please, at least consider upping it to at least 1700. |

Hey anoxa! On your profile it says you are breastfeeding. If this is still the case, then you NEED to be eating more than 1400 calories! Breastfeeding burns over 500 calories a day, and it is recommended that breastfeeding women eat around 300-500 calories more than most if they are on a diet, so you could probably afford to crank up the calories to 1700-1900 - when my aunt was breastfeeding, she ate 2500 calories a day and still lost weight! Its so important that both you and the baby get the right nutrition, so you're body is most likely making you 'binge' because it knows you need the calories! Analyse what you're craving, as well. If it's ice cream, it may be that you need more calcium. If its a pizza, then have a low cal cheese and tomato sandwich instead - just think about what you want, and maybe have a healthier alternative? |

| The Lounge | am i allowed to ask about same-sex marriages? | Apr 10 2009 00:39 (UTC) |
59 |
Just for a different angle on this, I remember reading a quote from John Barrowman (UK gay actor) - "Why would I want a 'marriage' from a belief system that hates me?" I am pro-choice when it comes to gay marriage, but I also think that a couple shouldn't have to be married to have the same rights as a husband and wife (this applies to heterosexual relationships as well). If there are reasons why a couple doesn't want to get married (such as financial reasons or whatever), then I think they should have the same inheritance rights as a couple who are married. After all, no matter how special the day is for individuals, the only product of marriage is a small slip of paper. Surely gay unmarried couples should have the exact same rights as a married gay or straight couple? |

Original Post by hannahboots: haha, good plan!
My biggest problem is that I'm doing virtually no exercise now! I usually do quite a bit, but at the moment I keep prioritising revision, and then when it comes to the stage when I have done sufficient revision I am so tired/bored that I just feel like slugging out on my laptop/in front of the TV! I still walk everywhere, so its not like I'm completely sedentary, but I'm only getting around 3 hours of proper, getting your heart rate up exercise a week! My new, foolproof plan - my mum's bought an exercise bike and its in front of the TV. I've printed out a load of revision notes and I'm going to start going over them while I'm on the bike. Ok, its not a varied work out, but its something! I'm going to start running again too, and put an audiobook of my literature plays on my MP3. Hell yes, I'm going to be the biggest loser in the area! =] |

Hows everyone doing? I feel like I'm eating pretty well at the moment, but I'm only getting about 5 hours of exercise a week - considering I used to be a 20+ hours a week academy girl, I feel so lazy! Is anyone considering doing any challenges during this? I was going to try eating 7+ pieces of fruit and veg for a while, or maybe doing a water/exercise challenge? |

thanks for all your replies! She sort of went out of her way to find a nutritionist that would allow her to do the Cambridge Diet - she'd seen my auntie do it and lose ~50lbs, so I doubt the guy is properly registered or anything Its just such an awkward situation, because as her daughter she thinks that she immediately must know more than me, which in this case just isn't true! Hopefully she'll do what you think, amwilmarth, and this diet will only last 2-3 weeks. She wants me to do it with her, and keeps trying to get me to join her, its so annoying - I know the second she loses 3lbs or whatever on this diet, she's going to rub my nose in it! I keep reminding myself that the long term consequences probably wouldn't be worth the short term benefits... |

Hey everyone! I'm 145 today, so not quite 5%, but only a little over! I'm pretty happy to be out of the 150 plateau, so I'm happy with myself =] What's everyone doing for valentines? A load of friends are coming round mine tonight to watch the dark knight and eat popcorn, since none of us have 'significant others', and we figured it wasn't just couples that should have a good time :) |

Greeneyedbellydancer, way to go on almost getting your 5%! I'm sure you do look different - sometimes its just hard to see it, cos it has been over a month since you saw yourself with those extra pounds! And I'm really looking forward to seeing the cure again - I saw them last year and they were immense. They're being supported by Franz Ferdinand this time round, which makes me even more excited! nutellabella; I'm a few hours outside london, but we have had the same weather! I think the main problem is that no one over here is used to driving in the snow - there's been so many crashes! I was on a bus on monday, and they were going 40-50 mph through the snow, while every other car was going about 5 mph. Bus drivers have no fear! I'm not surprised they cancelled all the buses in london, honestly, it was crazy. I went to the beach on monday. Its this silly tradition me and my friend have; if something's happened like a massive electrical storm or the power going off at college, we always go to the beach. It was so strange seeing the sand covered in snow! What's the weather like stateside? Sunny and lovely yet? :) |

Hello Everyone! Well. The scales still aren't that keen on me. I was a *tiny* smidgen under 147 today, but not close enough to 146.5 for it to really count as weight loss... Honestly, I wasn't expecting to lose anything this week - all my sport has been cancelled because of bad weather, and I haven't managed to bring myself to go out for a run at ALL this week - how bad is that?! I've had 3 days off college this week too - there's an entire inch of snow here! I know, extreeeeeme... We really don't *do* snow here.

Heyo! How's everyone getting on? I weighed in at 147 today, same as the last few weeks! Grrrr rainbowroll, can you put my goal weight reaching date as May/June 2008 please? I'm going to aim for 9 stone (126lbs) I've decided, though I have a load of exams in May which will either end up in me being too nervous to eat, or eating WAY too much! Anyone else aiming for a BMI of around 19? Message me if you are; I'm always up for a chat! Start Weight - 147lbs (BMI - 22) Week One - 147lbs (BMI - 22) Goal Weight - 126lbs (BMI 19) |
