Yes. When we got her at the PAWS shelter in Ft. Madison, IA, her name was Spice, but my partner didn't like that name, so he christened her Spike, since it was close enough to her original name. When we got Scamp, another of our pack, her name was LuLu. Scamp is special, her legs are crooked so it looks like she's scampering when she walks. Hence Scamp (though Mike liked the idea of As-Is for her, because we got her that way from the shelter. Jackie was originally Jaquay. Yep, they're all former shelter dogs. We're a soft touch and are allowed 3 dogs at a time by our town.

Boy did I have drama today! I was out with my best friend, Spike, a rather large Shepherd-ish mixed breed dog. We were around mile 6 when she got spooked at the el stop on Harlem ave and tripped me. I fell and lost control of the leash. And she went running right across Harlem Ave (a very busy street), and of course, I went dashing across Harlem Ave after her. Neither of us was hit, though I'm sure some motorists were unhappy with us! Anynow, I ran after her for about 1/4 mile till I was too winded to keep up anymore. I lost her some time later and walked home to get the car and then go out and look for her. This all happened at 9:00am. Around 3pm, I got a call, Spikey was fine, she was hanging out in a lady's backyard. So I went to pick her up. She's home now and fine! Amazing! She went from Harlem and South Blvd to Oak Park Ave and Lexington Ave. She had to cross several busy streets and had to figure out how to use a bridge to cross the Eisenhower expressway! My guess is, she found parts of our old walks and followed them.

And now that I have my baby back, I've started to notice that my knee, arm and hand hurts where I fell!

Weight Loss Soda...weight loss hindrance? Oct 03 2008

I've lost 190lb+ while drinking a lot of diet soda. It's not hurt my weight loss efforts at all. Most days it has made up all of my liquid hydration, other days maybe half or a third.

I don't when I give. I usually take a diet coke, SF green tea, or water with me and a Kashi granola bar or piece of fruit. The juice and cookies are awful high in sugar.

I like steel cut oats (and hulled barley, too) and I cook them in the slow cooker. 4 cups of water and 1 cup of oats cooked for 8-10 hours on low makes perfect oats for me. I then eat a portion and save the rest in the fridge for the rest of the week. Each morning, I'll dish myself out a portion and add some almond milk, cinnamon, and Splenda and nuke it for a minute or so. That's my winter weather breakfast.
Weight Loss One Meal a Day? Sep 30 2008

Food doesn't speed up your metabolism. Exercise does. So don't worry about messing with your metabolism.

Blood sugars can get wanky eating once a day. I eat one large meal a day and I've not had a problem with it, others get binges triggered. It depends on the individual.

If you're planning on supplementing with yogurt, kashi, etc. then I would say that's not even one meal a day, that's just calorie tilting and should be fine. Try it for a week or two (and keep in mind, you may be hungrier during your first week, it'll subside as you get used to it) and see how it goes.

Weigh in for October 1: 214.

Well, last day of the month, and I'm at 214!!! Yeah, I broke the 218 barrier. I had a great 2nd half of the month and the good thing is, I'm energized for October as well! Heck I even took my walk/run in the rain yesterday. I just threw on a plastic rain poncho and headed out.

renaer14, I'm 5'8, and given the size of my collarbones, I'm guessing a medium or large frame.

I'm kind of an extreme case (190+ lb lost) but for the first year, I really kept close watch and used this site all the time. Now, I don't log my food because I really do know what to eat and I don't log my activities because the important thing to me is a mental checkmark, did I do it or not. I've continued losing with an occasional interruption due to schedules, vacations, holidays, etc.

Of course, I find the same problem with watching TV. I get bored after a few minutes. Reading, fortunately, does not cause that (go figure), nor does web browsing.

I should really post a before pic here.

I've tried exercise machines, like stationary bikes and treadmills, and I get bored too easily to be able to continue doing them. It's odd, because I can walk for miles and miles and not get bored, but put me on a treadmill and all I want to do is get off (luckily, I did not buy it!).

Yeah, not sure. I don't have chronic pain, just sore muscles after lifting and well, right now, after a 9+ mile walk, I've got some sore knees. I just put some of the capsaisin on (I'm at work, so stinky ointment, maybe not so good, here!)

Good for you humorpam! One thing I've discovered for muscle and joint pain (and oy, have I had pains with all those long walks and now the lifting again), is Tiger balm (it's a menthol/clove oil ointment. It stinks to high heaven, but does seem to work. Also, it's topical so not too likely to interfere with meds you may be taking.) if you don't like odor, a lot of places sell ointments with capssaicin, which is a topical anaesthetic.

Weight Loss Going to bed hungry-Does anyone else find... Sep 26 2008

Interesting. I have, on occasion, gone to bed hungry, and I wake up in the morning not very hungry like usual. It doesn't seem to matter whether I was full or empty before bed, it's the same.

a contractor bag (can be found at Home Depot or Menards) filled with sand to the level that you want to lift (I guess you could have multiple contractor bags at different levels). Then carry it around. Carry it up a hill. Try to run with it. Carry it on your shoulders. etc.

Milk bottles filled with sand are another great suggestion (for the dumbbell effect). Also, the ginormous cans of food at places like Costco or GFS can be great weights for tricep lifts and other low weight exercises (and if you get hungry, and no one has paid you so food is low around the house, at least you've got something to eat!)
Weight Loss Alli, does it work? Sep 25 2008
18:49 (UTC)
floggingsully,

It doesn't absorb all fat, only about 50%. That's why it is so important to take the fat soluble vitamins (well a multivitamin is easier) a couple hours after taking Alli, so you can absorb those nutrients.

devilish_patsy,

yeah, I worry about that too. For now, given its safety, he can continue taking Alli/Xenical indefinitely, but it is expensive, so he'll need to learn eventually how to live without it. My hope is that as he becomes less heavy, he will find exercise to be more enjoyable. I remember when I first started walking at 400lb+, it was hard going, I got out of breath easily and tired easily. Now as I lost, and gained confidence, it got easier (of course, I would then extend the walk or up the pace).
Weight Loss Alli, does it work? Sep 25 2008

devilish_patsy,

Yes, most diet pills mess with your metabolism (brain, heart, lung, etc.) so they do tend to be dangerous. Alli doesn't though. It works in the intestines. It is probably the safest diet drug out there (as long as you take the multivitamin at least 2 hours after taking Alli (or Xenical).

While I agree you can lose weight using this site and calorie counting and exercise (I've lost 180lb+ doing so), if you're not willing to commit to that lifestyle change (like my partner), you can still lose weight with Alli. By losing that weight (@50 lb in the past 3 years) he has dropped his BP; reduced his blood sugar problems (I've probably been a help there as I pack his lunch and give him veg, fruit, sandwiches on whole grain bread, etc.; plus I cook dinners that tend to be veg heavy); and is in better shape than he was. Would he do better to exercise (there should be a separate category of sedentary to describe the man) and eat right (he has fast food breakfast every morning--2 egg & meat sandwiches)? Yep. Does he want to? Nope. So the Alli has been useful for him.

Oddly, my most difficult food group is the plastic food group. Tootsie rolls, peanut butter kisses and saltwater taffy. Honest to goodness, I get into a wrappers are irrelevant, they will be assimilated mode.

Now fortunately, my partner doesn't like these foods (or food-like substances) so they don't make their way into the house very often!

It's finally gotten cool enough for me to do weights again. My weight machine (Bowflex) is in an upstairs room of my bungalow so it gets warm there in summer, and I'm too cheap to air condition it! It was the first time I've done weights since 6/14 (I keep worksheets), and the good thing is I was able to do 12 reps of all the same resistances I had ended with, except I was able to increase the resistance on a couple (I did a couple of reps, and then was like, hmmm, too easy, let's increase and see if I can do it).

Sun and renaer14,

I hear you on the bone structure! I never realized my cheek bones were so high! Now I feel a little freaky everytime I look in a mirror because my face just doesn't look like me! My collar bones stick out quite a bit, too, as do my scapular bones (shoulder bones on the back). Additionally, some of my muscles are starting to show like my biceps and delts and lats.

And veins, oh my! Yep, I can now verify I have veins in my hands and in my knees! Big veins, at that.

I did finally bust 221, I've gotten as low as 218, but then I'm back up to 220. Everytime I get to 218 (I've been there twice), I start getting the munchies and don't want to exercise and start to gain again, then I have to go and lose that weight again, too! The good thing, is last time I went through that, it only lasted a week and when I munched, I mainly munched on high fiber foods like granola bars (the good kind, not the chocolate coated kind--about 140-180 cals and 2-4 g fiber), natural almonds, and figs. So at least my munchies were not dreadful for me and after 3 granola bars, I really did not want to eat anything for a good 3-4 hours!

Weight Loss Alli, does it work? Sep 24 2008

My husband has been taking it for quite a while. It has definitely helped him with weight loss because he has not dieted (other than I pack his lunch and cook dinner, and since I'm eating more healthfully, he is, too) or exercised and he has lost quite a bit of weight.

His doctor is comfortable prescribing Xenical (the prescription form of Alli) because it works in the intestines to simply block the processing of fat. So it doesn't screw with the metabosism or the blood pressure or anything, so it is pretty safe as a medication (other than a multivitamin needs to be taken before bed because the fat blocking can also block fat soluble vitamin uptake).

Foods grapes: good or bad? Sep 12 2008
14:14 (UTC)
Well, a lot of grapes may not be good for a diabetic because they're a little higher on the GI scale than many other fruits. I have a friend whose doctor warned him about eating them (of course I know my friend and I'm guessing his mini-candy bar snacks are far worse for him than the grapes.)
Foods Diet Soda Sep 12 2008

Real sugar, assuming you're referring to cane sugar,  is highly processed as well. It is not a healthful alternative to artificial sweeteners. Evaporated cane syrup is less processed.

Not everyone on CC is a natural food enthusiast. CC is not about natural food enthusiasm, it is about losing weight in a slow and steady manner. Some may find the way there involves artificial sweetners (like me) and others may find the way there involves a vegan lifestyle and yet someone else may choose yet another way.

It depends on who you ask.

I drink Diet Coke (and Coke Zero, and Tab, and ...) and it hasn't hurt my weight loss all that much. I've lost 180+lb since Feb 2007.

Others say the artificial sweeteners activate their sweet tooth. I've never had that problem.

humorpam, good news! Congrats!

renaer14, I have a short list of items not likely to be too awful for a diet. They consist of: grilled chicken breast, grilled sirloin, grilled salmon accompanied by baked potato with all fixins on the side or steamed veg if they have it. None of those are going to be dreadful for you. At people's house, it's a different story, there, portion control is a must! Things I avoid like the plague because they are calorie dense are: carb heavy sides like macaroni & cheese <which is also fat-laden, bonus!>, stuffing, rolls, rice dishes... Instead I try to load up on vegetables. Most meat dishes at people's houses won't be that awful calorie-wise, even wursts (which I eat regularly) and meat loaf isn't awful if you only have one serving of it.

Fast food places, ironically, are easy to get the less bad stuff at because they just about all have one or two choices that won't tip you over and they publish their info. So Wendy's has the chili and salads, and McDs has the salads (plus a happy meal is OK too), and Arby's has the salads or the regular roast beef...

I've found Old Country Buffet to be a pretty good choice for me, because they have the meats at the carvers stand, and white fish, and lots of veggies plus salad fixings so I can eat pretty darn well there. And they have no sugar added low fat vanilla yogurt which is a real bonus for me!
Foods oh the calories!!!! Sep 10 2008

  • soda yes, empty calories.
  • fruit drinks (not juice) empty calories
  • candy usually is composed of mostly empty calories--a snickers does have some nuts & some milk in the chocolate, but not enough compared to say drinking a 1/2 cup of milk and eating 12 almonds for about 1/2 the cals of the snicker.
  • cookies and cakes usually mostly empty calories
  • white bread
  • white rice
  • snack chips usually empty calories
Non empty calories
  • nuts & seeds --good source of many nutrients
  • milk, yogurt, & cheese --good source of calcium
  • veggies & fruits--good source of vitamins & minerals
  • meats--good source of protein & other nutrients
  • whole grain bread, brown rice, oatmeal -- good source of fiber, vitamins and minerals
Weight Loss Keeping you confort food around the house ? Will you binge if you do? Sep 09 2008
23:50 (UTC)

Yes, I think it's a good idea to train yourself to be able to be around foods you love and not feel compelled to eat them all. One serving of anything isn't that awful and there will be times in your life when you're around it.

I've been losing weight whilst surrounded by my partner's junk food since day 1 (Feb 2007) and I've been OK. I just have one weakness now, the plastic food group (salt water taffy and peanut butter kisses). I'm working on proper portion control with those.
Weight Loss Has anybody lost 50 or more pounds WITHOUT exercise? Sep 09 2008

If your baby is a little tyke, you might consider getting one of those jogging stroller things. I see people using them all the time when I'm taking my baby for a walk. My baby wouldn't fit in a stroller and it's not designed for 4 paws anyway, plus her 70+ lb would probably overwhelm it!

I've lost 180 lb so far, but I've exercised every step of the way.
