I have been eating a lot for the past three weeks and I've gained a total of 5lb since my lowest. And since I'm back on the diet now, there wasn't much gain.

So I'm not really concerned.

I've been on a 400cal diet. Self-explanatory - 400 cal per day.

I felt fine, and I lost a lot of weight. I've been off for it for a month, though, and I've slightly gained weight.

I'm going back onto the diet on Monday (yuck).

I'm trying to lose it because I just landed a HUGE modeling job that would pay me huge amount of money. But the picture that landed me for the job looks MUCH skinnier than I actually look (which has been confirmed by more than 15 people)! The job starts on May 24th and lasts for three days...

Before Easter I was losing at the pace of 1lb/day, but I don't know why. It would be great if I could get back to the pace, because I was losing weight, my skin was clear, my hair was shiny, and everything was just... good.

Thanks everyone for your response! iriechic14, thanks extra for the very detailed response. It made a lot of sense and it put my mind to rest.

I took a week off from dieting... I had fun time eating whatever I wanted.

Back to regular eating tomorrow!

Good luck to everyone too!

1. Motivationally, is it easier for you to stick to a food programme or an excersize programme?

food. I HATE moving around. The only exercise I do is walk.

2. What programmes have you tried in the past, and why haven't they worked (or what worked about them)?

I only tried one program, and I'm still doing that now.

3.With excersize, do you prefer cardio, weight training, both, or something else?

Walking? I also ran.

4. In a perfect world, what would your ideal programme consist of (example: I would have a personal trainer and a personal chef cook all of my food; I would have a stay at home nanny to watch my children, etc)

I would have a body that would never gain weight! haha. I would have limited access to food... apples and Raisin Bran is killing my dietary plans at the moment. Stupid spring break.

5. What is your biggest barrier to your health and fitness goals?

Apples and grapefruit and Raisin Bran.

6. Looking back, what made you gain weight in the first place?

Stress. I was stressed, so I took it out by eating.

I know the feeling! What's even worse, they constantly complain about how fat they are compared to me (... I use my looks for my job, of course I'll look thinner in the pictures), and then they proceed to eat ice cream. And THEN they ask why I'm not eating that 400kcal sundae.

Uh, probably because I don't want to gain weight?

Oh, and THEN they tell me that I look anorexic and I should go to a doctor, blah blah blah (this girl I'm talking about is NOT my friend - and she's 5'3" and weighs around 170lb).

I feel like I'm mean, but I got to this point because I WORKED for it. Weight loss doesn't magically happen.

Ruberta20 - no. I don't do that. I usually snack on fruits (I love frozen peaches), yogurt, or celery sticks. I don't have the willpower to ignore the hunger :-P.

I'm 5'9", and my weight is usually between 128 and 120 (132 when I'm having TTOM).

"I don't eat a lot" - I'm Japanese, and they have smaller portions. So by American standards, I'm a very small eater. When I go out, I rarely finish the food on my plate.

Anorexic doesn't mean not eating a lot, does it? They starve themselves.

But Raisin Bran is addicting (haha).

I'm no nutrition expert, but from your lifestyle, it looks like you're:

  • drinking fairly often (sorry if I'm wrong)
  • aren't getting much fruits and vegetables
  • aren't getting much dairy
Restaurants hardly care about nutrition - they just want that nice big bill you pay after eating a 500kcal chocolate gelato.

As a person who LOVES chocolate chip cookies, I suggest the following:

  • cut drinking. Not only does it dehydrate you insanely, you're also drinking sugar water! You might look childish asking for non-alcoholic beverage at a bar, but you're there to socialize, not to drink, right?
  • drink water. LOTS AND LOTS AND LOTS of water. Carry around litre bottles. I drink about 3 to 4 litres a day. Keeps your skin clear and hydrated too.
  • Eat vegetables and fruits. Apples, bananas, grapes (although a little high on sugar) are always good, and they don't involve peeling or anything. I carry around a fruit knife for grapefruit :-).
  • MILK AND YOGURT are your FRIENDS. And cottage cheese.
Good luck!

I feel guilty because I usually don't eat a lot. I guess it was also because it was right after lunch, and I knew I should have waited for 30 minutes to see if I was really that hungry.

Another factor is my evil evil model agent. He told me that I may be overweight. I wanted to strangle him, and in retrospect, I probably should have. He probably wants me to go anorexic, which I won't. But still, those words hurt :-(.

Thanks so much everyone for answering my question! I guess I'll just cut a little tomorrow. I refuse to throw up, and there's no point crying over spilled milk, right?

Do you find yourself liking Starbucks in particular? Or do you not really care as far as it's coffee?

See, I like coffee, so I don't care if it's Caribou, Instant, or Starbucks. I like my coffee straight - no sugar, no cream, no milk. So I splurge on Godiva hazelnut-flavored coffee, and drink it straight.

If you just like coffee, get Instant coffee and splurge that 4 bucks you spent on the caramel macchiato on something else.

Like a new nail polish, for instance :-)

I usually make my whole day's meal beforehand when that happens. Since I won't be eating greasy crap anyway, I'll eat  light bowl of cereal for breakfast, which I already have measured out, salad for lunch, which I already cut up the night before, and two slices of bread and soup (well, soup is just heating).

That way I don't have to go into the kitchen in search for food - it's all in the fridge (which I have a small one upstairs) and a microwave (also upstairs).

Foods Switching to diet pop Apr 10 2007
04:51 (UTC)

Splenda has been said to cause some serious heart problems (I don't have documentation, sorry). Basically, when you drink/eat something sweet, your body gets the signal that sugar/glucose is coming into your body. But Splenda or any non-calorie sweetener, doesn't provide the nutrient that can be provided by sugar.

I'd try to cut the amount down if I were you, but if you like pop a lot, that's okay. Just don't go more than one can a day, and maybe switch to a thin can (like Tab or a can the size of red bull).

Good luck!
Weight Loss Does alcohol slow your metobolism? Apr 10 2007

Alcohol dehydrates you - as people have already said - and additionally, think about it. All alcohol beverages are just fermented grains or fruits. It's sugar. So not only are you slowing down your body, you're drinking sugar water too!

If you don't like water, then I suggest Volvic's flavored water (or Aquafina's flavorsplash) - very low calories, but they're flavored and slightly sweet.

manewell - that wasn't scolding at all! Thanks for the advice. I think I'll take your advice and not treat myself with food for reaching my goal. That was rather counterproductive, if I think about it.

Parre - I might be being over-sensitive, but I am sensing some hostility in your posts. I don't know why. If I'm wrong, then I am so sorry for my wrong judgment.

That being said, there is a reason why I'm on a 700kcal diet. First of all, my body cells aren't going to accomodate a weight gain that fast - I used to be around 180lb, and I got stretch marks, indicating that my cells couldn't grow fast enough to accomodate my increased weight. I was in a healthy range of weight, but I got sick often, my TTOM went away completely, I couldn't sleep, e.t.c. e.t.c. Right around then, my daily calorie intake was about 2000kcal. So my physician said to cut down my calorie intake drastically - thus making me lose weight. Now I'm having regular TTOM, regular sleep cycles, and I don't get sick as much.
Weight Loss Confused Apr 10 2007

I wouldn't worry about it too much. When I was 13 (I'm 17 now), my period stopped completely (I started my period when I was 11) - and didn't come back until last year! I freaked out, since my period was as regular as an almanac, then it just stopped coming. But now it's back (sigh), although it's irregular.

If it really bothers you, ask your physician for provera or something - provera induces a period after three days (you take a pill for seven days, three days later you get a period).

It's still April. If it doesn't come by July, I suggest go seeing a physician.

Good luck!

parre - how does that article apply to me? I'm slightly confused for the following reasons:

  • I have been losing weight. I lost 60lb in 2 years.
  • I don't have a diet on fat, carbs and protein. My diet mainly consists of vegetables, protein, and fruits. I rarely eat fat that doesn't come from protein (IE: milk)
To clarify your post: two days of binging will make me gain weight drastically. Is this correct? Because that's what I'm asking about.

My question isn't "am I eating healthy". My question is "will the past two days make me gain weight drastically".

Again, thanks!

Chrisrai - good point. Yesterday was okay, I guess. I ate three maple-cookies (they're from Canada, so I don't know the exact nutrients, but they're 80kcal a piece) but today... oh god. I learned that Chinatown is not the place a dieter should go. I didn't eat chocolate or anything, but pretty much custard pies and red-bean buns. Otherwise, it was a meal.

For more details, I'll list the stuff I ate for the past two days:

Yesterday:

  • three maple cookies - 80kcal/piece
  • 4 glasses of whole milk (I'm allergic to skim)
  • rice (about 100kcal?)
  • Japanese stew (seaweed, soy beans, okra, carrots, radish, no clue about calories... I'm estimating around 350)
  • Light-n-fit yogurt (40kcal)
  • a bowl of Raisin Bran Crunch cereal (48g, about 200kcal)
  • spinach salad with celeries, no dressing
  • miso soup
Today:

  • Souffle Cheesecake (200kcal)
  • werther's original hard candy (20kcal)
  • 1 spring roll
  • about 1/3 of this chinese chow mein bowl
  • 2 custard pies (about 1.5in in diameter)
  • 2 red bean buns, fried
  • 1 pork bun
  • 2 meat crepes (it's like a spring roll, about .25in x 3in x 1.25in)
  • 1 rice roll (about 2in x 2in x 2in, with pork filling)
  • 3 custard rolls (1in in diameter, about 1in in height)
  • 1 steamed shrimp dumpling
  • rice (about 100kcal?)
  • Japanese stew (seaweed, soy beans, okra, carrots, radish, again no clue about calories... I'm estimating around 250)
  • 2 pan-fried water chesnut cakes (about 3in x 3 in x .5in)
  • 1 and a half fried bun with sesami seed (about 3in in diamter, spherical)
I can't remember anything else, but I think that's it.
Weight Loss 5'3..and i cant wear a bikini Apr 08 2007
17:34 (UTC)

Hahaha. I wear skinny jeans in the winter when I'm wearing knee-high boots, since I can't stuff my regular jeans in my boots. Skinny jeans in general make you look like an ice cream cone, because... that's how your body is  built. It's natural that your upper half of the body is wider than your feet. But I only wear skinny jeans when I'm wearing boots.

If you want to wear a bikini but you're worried about your thighs, wrap something around your hip or wear boy-shorts. They look adorable with bikinis, and even if you wear a really skimpy bikini you don't look uh... slutty.

Remember, those models are wearing 5 inch heels with bikinis. You aren't going to be wearing those at the beach. So it's natural that their legs look more thin and toned.

Feel confident and comfortable with yourself, and no matter what weight you are, you'll always look gorgeous :-).
Weight Loss 100% my own views on cheat days Apr 07 2007

What's wrong with a cheat day? It's impossible to eat only healthy food for 365 days a year - everyone's a human being, they might want an ice cream or a frap occasionally. Thats the keyword - occasionally.

Honestly, I think that having no cheat day is going to cause so much stress that you'll end up exploding and just shoving your face with food in the end. I don't have a set cheat day, but sometimes I overeat an insane amount.

Healthy snacks? Since when are snacks technically healthy? If you want to lose weight SO MUCH, then don't eat snacks, because technically, your body doesn't need them.

I think your "48 days of eating crap" is going to cause some mental breakdown in many people's cases. I, for one, can't keep on doing work all day - after all, dieting, working out, studying amounts to the same thing for me. Not being able to do what I want.

By your logic, "48 days of eating crap" can also be applied to your job - since you probably take Sunday off, that's FIFTY-TWO DAYS YOU AREN'T WORKING. Why don't you work those days for the extra money? That's 52 days wasted by your train of thought...

But use basal metabolism calculator to figure it out, because obviously your build is different from mine.
Weight Loss argh boyfriend weekend Apr 04 2007
17:44 (UTC)
My boyfriend just came from Oxford and...

I ate an insane amount.

Considering that I just broke my plateau (I have no idea how), this sudden increase of calories (by approx. 700) just freaked me out. It was just a day, but will it make me hit a plateau again? Because it took me about 2 months to get out of it, and I had hel* of a time doing that. I'm 2 pounds away from my ideal weight, and now this happened.

Because I'm so close to the ideal weight, and because I ate about quadruple the amount of normal calories for a day, I'm in a panic. I can't exercise, because it's freakishly cold outside and usually I go out for a run.

I guess I have to wait for tomorrow's weighing, but he's staying with me for the Easter. This does not bode well in my mind, especially because he can eat insane amount of calories and still work as a part-time model, e.t.c.

What can I do? Please help!
Weight Loss How often do you all weigh yourselves, and why? Apr 03 2007

Every morning, after using the bathroom. Morning is the most accurate time - your weight fluctuates during the day. In the morning, you've sweated, so the amount of water in your body is relatively low - and your body's just waking up. And obviously you haven't eaten your breakfast yet. Then I just record it on weight log - then I forget about it for the rest of the day.

I'm 5'9", and the only pants that FIT me are from Miss Sixty or Zara (Express is passable, but it's really baggy).

I wear Guess, Bebe as well. I also wear a lot of stilettos.

Don't wait for an average guy to fall for you! Wear a nice slinky stiletto, show off your long legs (height=long legs, right?) and catch a gorgeous dude who's 6'3" :-).

Otherwise I'd live in female Siberia.

Hi! I'm 17, 5'9", 126lb.

Here's the thing - in order to LOSE weight, you need to eat less than what you burn.

Exercising is good for your metabolism, but it only puts a dent in your overall calorie consumption. So I suggest you cut down on calorie-dense things. Eat a lot of vegetables (absolutely no dressing - even vinegarettes can add calories) and fruits (balsamic vinegar is really good with fruit salads). Eat eggs and drink milk, as they raise your metabolism - and they have a lot of nutrients (remember, calves live ONLY on milk). I substituted English muffins for bagels, cheese for cottage cheese, e.t.c.

Also, wearing the tighest jeans that you fit in 24/7 helps you cut down food. The waistband won't let you eat.

Drink a lot of H2O, because the sudden increase of vegetable intake can shock your body at first.

Good luck!
