The parked car I hit was around the corner of my cul de sac parked in a fire lane where it was not supposed to be parked. Since I knew a vehicle wasn't suppsoed to be there I didn't pay as close attention as I should have when I went around the corner. I was tightening my shoe straps and bam. I have no scars (physical anyway). It was quite a traumatic experience though seeing the top tube and down tube crinkled on my pride and joy. I also one time hit a tree that had been blow over by a storm. I was coming down a slight grade at about 25 mph and when I came around the bend there it was. I ended up in the tree on the ground. My helmet was really smashed up and I had a good bruise on my hip but I had no road rash or bike damage. I hit a dog one time at 25 mph that ran in front of me also. He was running with his owner and it was dark and I did not see him eventhough I had head lights. I stopped and hit the ground like a ton of bricks. Again, the helmet was smashed and I had a bruised hip but no road rash or bike damage. The dog walked away as though nothing happened. I was lying on the street with 5 women joggers standing over me to help me. I made sure I got up slowly :-) They offered to give me a ride home but I was only 8 miles into my 25 mile ride so I did the rest of my ride. The moral of the story is if any of y'all are thinking about riding without a helmet -- don't. I am a living testment to how they can save you and how quickly a crash can happen where you hit your head on the road. Frank |

My trainer bike is a circa 1985 aluminum trek 2000 with full Dura Ace. I could afford Dura Ace then because I was single. I had a Guerciotti (steel frame) with full Dura Ace on which I bent the top tube and down tube when I hit a parked pick up truck head on. I still have that frame hanging in the garage. I was leaving my cul de sac the same way I did 1000 times before that at a relatively low speed and as I rounded a corner I was reaching (and looking) down to tighten my shoe straps and when I looked up I was about 3 feet from the pickup, a large one at that, and I said "oh S*&t" and ended up on his hood. My current bike is a Jamis Eclipse with a steel frame and carbon chain stays, seat stays and fork. I tend to like steel, I feel like I am beat up after a long ride on my aluminum frame. I also am on the 3rd frame on the Trek 2000. Two of them broke, one on the chain stay and one on the seat tube, from fatigue. Thus I decided not to buy another aluminum frame although the aluminum today is probably better than 1985 I am sure. Trek has always replaced the frame with the exact same frame. I cannot believe they still have them sitting in stock somewhere. sandy |

| tr,
I remember the days of toe clips and how hard it was to get out of them. I also remember the shift by feel. I still have a shift by feel bike and a bike with SIS shifters (6 speed) on the down tube. I no longer ride the former and only ride the latter on my trainer and when I go to the beach and there are essentially no hills. The only time I have fallen is when I am practically standing still such as at a red light (very embarrassing more than anything) but I fell more with toe clips than I have with Look Pedals. Of course by the time I transitioned to Look Pedals I was a bit more experienced also. I have crashed a couple of times at 20+ mph with the Look Pedals where I didn't get out of the pedals but that was probably good since I stayed with the bike and it protected me. sandy |

| Jane,
You may simply be pushing too big a gear. That is normally what causes knee pain. I would try to pedal at a higher cadence in a smaller gear and see if that helps the problem. If your knees are sore though it may take a few days for it to help. There are some good discussions earlier in the thread on cadence and gears that you should look at. In terms of seat height you want to set the height so that when the pedal is at the bottom of the rotation you leg has a slight bend. Your bike shop can help you adjust the seat height if you feel uncomfortable doing it. Sandy |

| I carry 2 spare tubes, 4 CO2 cartrides, patches, tire levers, a Thule Multi-Tool, and Quick Patches (those that you just stick on the tube and not not need glue). For emergency tire repairs I carry a couple of small pieces of old tire to stick inside the tire to patch a big gash in the tire. They have come in handy a couple of times. I have heard of the dollar bill method but have never tried it. Until recently I also carried a fanny pack with my cell phone, food, money, etc. but now have a small Topeak pack that attaches to my handlebar stem. I carry my cell phone and money in that and the food I put in my shirt pockets. Since the advent of CO2 I no longer carry a frame pump.
I finished last week with 230 miles and the Month of May with 760 miles. With the 36 I got in today before the rains came I am now sitting at 2208 for the year. My goal for the year is 6000 so I have targeted a minimum of 3000 by the end of June. |

| Well I finished the challenge with 1234 challenge miles and 1756 miles for the year. Equally as important to me I am 30 pounds lighter than I was at the beginning of the challenge. I still have 10 pounds to go to reach my goal but feel real good about losing 30 pounds in only 10 weeks. I am looking forward to the dieting to be over but believe I will still have to count the calories to keep from putting it back on. That has been my problem forever.
jc I think yo did real well considering how long you were off the road because of your back. You rode really well in the metric century 2 weeks ago. |

| Panda,
At the end of the cable where it enters the derailleur (I never could spell that) there is an adjustment knob. If the bike is new the cable has probably stretched as jc stated and all that probably is required is to make the adjustment with that knob. |

| When is winter going to go away? It was 40 degrees on my ride this morning. It seems that everytime I pack away my leg warmers, long sleeve shirts and other layers it gets cold again. Unfortunately I must do my ride at 5:15 am rather than later in the day when the temperature reaches the 70's. I am going to leave my winter gear unpacked for awhile to break the bad luck spell.
Cadence is very important as was mentioned earlier. It is better to spin at a higher cadence and let your cardiovascular system do the work than it is to push big gears and let your legs do the work. Years ago I used a computer with cadence and developed a 95-105 spin. I no longer have a computer with cadence because I don't like units with wires and the wireless units with cadence cost more than I want to spend. I think once you get accustomed to riding at a particlar cadence the computer with cadence is less important. But if you have not developed a cadence yet then you really need a compuere with cadence. |

| Well, I had a 164.4 mile week. I spent the weekend at the beach with the family and did a 42 mile ride on Saturday. the 1st half of the ride I had a good tail wind and did 21 mph or so most of the 1st 21 miles. Unfortunately I had to turn around to go home and had a strong headwind the last 21 miles and worked my tail off to do 16 or so mph. I now have 1077 challenge miles and 1600 miles for the year. It was raining when I got up at 5:30 this morning so there was no ride today as by the time the weather cleared I was involved in Mother's Day activities and had to drive home from the beach.
A widely accepted rule of thumb is that a 150 pound cyclist (including bike) riding 15 mph will burn 50 calories/mile or 12.5 calories/minute. The heavier the cyclist and the faster the cyclist rides the more calories the cyclist will expend. Of course the inverse is also true. There is a formula for this but I do not know what it is. I use a bicycling log program from Henning Associates that calculates calories about the same as C-C. Running probaly burns more calories/minute than cycling but in my case I had to give up running. It was just too hard on my leg joints and my back. I suffer none of the pains cycling that I did when I was running. I was never a big runner but used it for cross training. I agree with Leinad about being confident in your cycling skills before using clip in pedals. I have been using Look pedals for over 20 years and have never had a problem falling or getting out of the pedals. I fell more often using pedals with straps than I ever have with the Look pedals. I never could seem to get my feet out of the straps. i guess it is like most things in that it is personal preference. |

| After another 170 mile week last week and 46 thus far this week I stand at 959 miles for the challenge and 1482 for the year. I should meet the challenge within the next couple of days. I did a 60 mile ride on Saturday, the last 10 miles or so in a drenching rain. I felt really strong on that ride after losing 25 pounds. I can''t wait to see what the hills feel like after losing another 15. It will be 19 or so years since I cycled at my target weight so I forget what it feels like. I did not ride on Sunday, not because I was tired or sore after the 60 miler because I wasn't but because it took me over 3 hours to clean up my bike from riding in the rain. I typcailly disassemble it and put it back together after ridding in the rain.
I never got into the hydration pack thing and still use water bottles. I guess I am just old school. I tried communiting with a back pack a few times and did not care for it much from a comfort point of few. Thus I relate wearing a hydration pack to the back pack and have never felt enticed to get one. I am probably a bad hydration example in any case. Unless it is really hot I don't hydrate that much anyway. On the 60 mile ride on Saturday I drank about 1/2 of a large water bottle. I tried energy drinks years ago and didn't like the way they made my bike sticky and gooey so I don't use them. I typically eat clif gel cubes on my rides for an energy pickup although right now since I am dieting I limit them to about 3/hour. I too find that after a long ride I am starving and want to eat anything that doesn't move for a day or so but until I lose the next 15 pounds I try to limit satisfying my extreme hunger to fruits and things like that. |

| I put in a hilly and windy 50 miles today which gives me 180 miles for the week, 748 miles for the challenge period and 1267 for the year. I have 252 miles to go in 21 days. I did 5000 miles last year and 6000 miles the prior year. My goal is 6000 for this year. I can't keep up with leinad though. At 57 I don't recover like i did years ago.
jc did you get the miles in today you hoped you would? I hope your back is feeling better. |

| We had great weather in DC this weekend as well with the temperatures in the 70's. I got in a very hilly 50 miles on Saturday, 38 miles on Sunday (my legs were spent from the hills on Saturday) and a fast 23 this morning before work. I felt great this morning. The way my legs felt yesterday I was afraid My legs would be tired again today. It's supposed to be nice the next couple of days so I hope to get my before work rides in on those days as well. I just might make this challenge. | |||

| Had great weather today. Sunny and 60 degrees when I left the house. When I returned 3 hours (and 50 miles) later the temp was in the 70's with reasonably light winds. The ride was quite hilly though. So far I have 565 challenge miles and 1100 for 2007. With 18 days to go I need about 23 miles/day to meet the challenge. If the weather holds up I should make it. | |||

| Wow you guys make me feel bad. I only have 96 miles for April and 395 since the beginning of the challenge (March 9). If winter would go away I could get some serious miles in. Yesterday I did 38 miles with the temperatures in the mid 40's and winds of 20+ MPH. It was tough. Saturday it snowed so I did not get out and Friday was pretty much the same as yesterday. | |||

| Leinad you must have a crotch of steel to sit on a trainer for 40 miles. The most I can stand on the trainer is about an hour which gives me about 15-16 miles because of the resistance my trainer provides. Although I will admit the length of time I can deal wiith is more mental than physical.
I did 25 miles on Tuesday. It was a great day and I planned on doing more but the honey do list kept my ride time short. I did 14 on the trainer today. I am off tomorrow so I hope to do at least 35 tomorrow and Saturday to get my 100 for the week. |

| srd, In my younger days I would ride on days that had a wind chill factor below zero. In fact my water bottle would freeze solid. The best I found was the true and tried method of layers however I am not certain the layers you are proposing are correct. You want layers that will breath and wick away the sweat. You may be surprised how much you will sweat cycling in the very cold. Sweatpants, etc. will hold the sweat and you will get cold. The under armour is good but it will wick right to the cotton fabric in the sweats. Your local bike shop can suggest some good layers on cycling clothing for you to wear. | |||

| I didn't get on the bike for 2 days now. My kids are on spring break so I am taking a few days off work but my wife had me building a fence for the past 2 days. I actually gave up a very nice riding day today for for the fence but it keeps her happy so I do not get too much grief when I do ride, like tomorrow. I only hope my legs aren't too tired from the past two days. I must get in rides tomorrow and Wednesday since it looks like winter is coming back on Thursday and may last through the weeknd. | |||

| Speaking of single speed bikes. I was in san Francisco last week and saw quite a few guys riding single speed bikes on Sf's hills. Made my leggs ache just thinking about it.
I got 12 miles in on the trainer this morning since it was too cold to ride outside, at least for me. That gives me 102 for the week with a 40 mile or so ride planned tomorrow (my week runs from Sun-Sat). This will be my best week since October. I also have lost 12 pounds since I have been on C-C. |

| leinad,
My kids are 14 & 16 but my hours are not so convenient. I get up at 4:40, get on the bike by 5:15 and do a 25 mile or so ride before work. I seldom get home before 6 and then I usually have things to do at home so riding after work is tough. I commute sometimes but it is an 18 mile trip each way to and from work and cleaning up at work is not convenient. In addition to the 25 mile weekday rides I will typically do 30-40 mile rides on Saturday & Sunday. Do to family pressures it is hard to get in much more but I do from time to time. |

| leinad,
I am at C-C because I want to lose about 30 pounds. jc343 referred me to C-C. I am a 57 year old avid cyclist. Prior to my marriage at the age of 40 I was cycling 9000 - 12000 miles/year. After having kids, my cycling time was reduced and I put on weight because I have the same eating habits I had 17 years ago and my metabolism gradually slowed. I am now cycling about 5000-6000 miles/year and want to lose some weight to help on the hills. |

| leinad,
I ride a 2003 Jamis Eclipse. It has steel tubing on the main triangle with a carbon fork and rear triangle. It has Shimano Ultegra for the drivetrain components. I have about 15k miles on it and it has been holding up very well. I cannot say that about the aluminum Trek 2000 I have. I bought that bike in the mid 80's and am on the same frame. I still use it on the trainer and when I go to the beach where I do not have a good place to lock it up. I do the majority of my riding in upper Montgomery County and Howard County maryland. It is generally rolling with some good hills at spots. |

| jc, I did 15 miles on the trainer yesterday and 32 miles on the country roads today. This was pretty good considering I am fighing a bad cold and hurt my back lifting weights last week. I did not have a good week last week but started off good this week. If the weather is good in the mornings this week I should be able to begin my morning 25 miles rides. I should be able to catch up to have 1000 by 5/19, even with a slow start.
You can try changing the fine tune screws on the front derailleur but turning them too far will casue the chain to either undershoot the small chain ring or overshoot the big chain ring so do it in little increments. |
