FINISH.   Nov 12-14:

Well it was high time I weighed in. I skipped two weeks of weighing in! First there was TTOM, and I was miserably bloated. Then last week, I weighed in at 170 and knew it wasn't accurate, so I didn't record it. This week, I'm at 167. So I'm 2 pounds down from 9 weeks ago, which is dissapointing. But I'm here to own up, and not to be a quitter. I'm going to do a very good job next week and see if I can't improve the situation.

Fitness Swimming Workouts Please? Nov 07 2009

Hi, I'm like you, I just like swimming., and am not a fan of glancing at the clock. Every time I see the descriptions of fitness swimming workouts in the books, I get overwhelmed. One of my favorites to mix it up is the ol' 4-3-2-1. This is totally unofficial, but here goes:

Warm up with 6 laps of crawl (a lap to me is there and back- 50 yards in my pool)

Then do 4 laps of crawl, 4 laps of breast stroke, and 4 of back stroke

Then 3 of each

Then 2 of each

Then 1 of each

And bam! Done, and it comes out to be around a mile. I think that the changeups get faster and faster so time flies. Also it's easy to remember, I have a hard time otherwise.

Have fun!

Hey guys,

no weigh in for me this week. It's TTOM, and the scale skyrocketed up on Thursday and has not to come down. I don't want to post that I gained 4 pounds this week, I can't take the drama!!!

I'll be back next week with a lower number. One can only hope!

Hope everyone is doing well!

Dancingpanda that's great! Our BFs sound similar! Although mine will eat my cooking light stuff, he isn't very good at pretending he enjoys eating kale...

I was also embarrassed when we first had the weight talk. But telling him made me feel more accountable and determined to stick with the plan. Also once you show him you are sticking with it this time, he will probably realize he needs to be supportive. Also during the talk, definitely let it be known you are SERIOUS and really need his help this time.

One last thing- it feels so amazing to be a normal healthy weight that it is worth all of the pain and suffering involved with light beer, dodging other people's sabotage efforts, and quitting the junk!

Weight Loss alone.... Oct 22 2009

Hi!

First off, we had almost the same stats- I'm 5' 10 and at my highest I was 210ish. I now am maintaining at 165 and am super comfortable here! Of course I'd like to lose 10 more, but isn't that always the case.

I've maintained at 165 for 1.5 years now! I joined CC about 2.5 years ago.

OK, next off- I know how it goes since I am also a drinker. I should note that I did not stop drinking during my weight loss. But- I toned it down a bit. For the first month, I stopped drinking except on the weekends. I switched to light beer, wine spritzers, or vodka-soda-splash of limes. When I stopped drinking as often, my tolerance went down, so then I was able to not consume so many calories each time I went out. That has really stuck with me. Just last night I went out with some friends, and I only had 3 drinks, and was perfectly happy.I know that may sound like a lot to some people- but I used to drink substantially more on a night out.

The other thing I can relate to you is the boyfriend situation. While mine isn't overweight, he eats junk food and drinks high calorie beers like there is no tomorrow. At first when I started to lose weight, we had a talk and I got his support. This is very important! Once I had his support, it was easier. He would only buy light beer, he wouldn't buy junk food (or at least in sight of me!), and he agreed to eat healthier dinners with me. Also, he would help out by eating more of whatever it was we were eating, so I would have a smaller portion and be less tempted. That sounds funny but he enjoyed it! Like the person above me, he still keeps ice cream and chips in the house but I have trained myself to ignore them. It's amazing what willpower can do!

Finally- good luck, you've got it in you, because if I can do it anyone can!

Fitness I want to start running! Any runners want to give me their opinion...? Oct 22 2009

Hi rizzo, I was like you maybe 2 years ago- I did lots of elliptical and went swimming, but never ran. I always thought it was something that I personally could never do. I started running anyway though, because it was easy and convenient, and I could do it anywhere as long as I had my shoes!

When I started, I was also kind of embarrassed to just go running down the street. I picked a flat trail by my work that was about 2 miles in length. I didn't follow a specific regimen, but I would just do intervals of walking and running. I would tell myself "just make it to that tree ahead, and then you can walk" and things like that. Eventually when I could make it all the way around, I signed up for a 5k. To train for the 5k, I just tried to make it 2 times around the trail.

Now, 2 years later, running is a part of my life. I ran another 5k, then a 10k, and then one of those crazy 24 hour relay thingys with 11 other runners. The craziest thing is- I actually enjoy running!

Good luck and enjoy!

The Lounge complete lack of sex drive Oct 17 2009
20:36 (UTC)

Hi fauxtograph,

I can relate to your situation. I don't have a kid, but I've been in a relationship for the past 4 years and within the past couple of years, my sex drive has dropped substantially. It got to the point where it was affecting my relationship, my boyfriend didn't like always having to be the initiator, and I hated dreading sex. It still was enjoyable once we got going, but I never wanted it.

A couple of months ago the subject came up and we had an honest discussion about it. I let him know what I was going through, and assured him it had nothing to do with him. He had been feeling inadequate, etc, so it was good to get this out on the table.

Then, I made a list of fun sexy things we could do together that might turn me on, and actually even writing the list kind of got me going.

Next, I decided to try one of the things every now and then. I still have a lot more to try, but a few of the things I tried right away have worked wonders! I feel like our old sex life is slowly returning, and it's great.

One of the things I really recommend is reading erotica. I ordered a couple books of erotica for women from amazon, and seriously if I even read one story before bed I am ready for action. We've also tried having sex in the morning instead of when we drop into bed tired at night, and that's helped too.

The most important thing is to know that what you are going through is totally normal. I did a lot of research and it was comforting to me to hear that a lot of other women go through the same thing. I wish you luck, and PM me if you want more support!

And as I sit here, I just had apple cake for breakfast and didn't manage to get my run in yesterday. I waited until the last possible day to weigh myself (saturday) since I knew I hadn't been good.

Anyway. There are 4 weeks left, and I can lose a couple more pounds here! I'm starting my own challenge of exercising 6 of the next 7 days!

I liked this week's challenge of logging- I've been logging EVERYTHING and it's been helpful. Ok, here's to a fantastic week 6- starting now!

Hi jazz,

When I lost 30 pounds I noticed the same thing- that first winter I was absolutely freezing, all the time. If you think about it, that's a significant amount of insulation, gone! I needed to wear tons more clothes. Now that I'm going on my 3rd winter with the weight gone, things feel more normal. Your body kind of adjusts, and I don't feel as cold all the time.

I wouldn't worry, it's just a noticeable effect of your weight loss!

Congratulations!

I also love food. I am also like you in that I cannot give up the things I love or I will surely fail. Instead I have had to really try to make room for littler bits of the things I love. Fortunately I also love vegetables, so that helps.

Pregnancy & Parenting Left NuvaRing in/out too long :/ Sep 24 2009

Hi ecwk6-

I was on the nuvaring for 8 months. I stopped because I got pregnant, while using the ring! I changed the ring on time, everytime. My doctor told me that I was apparently one of the 8% (8 out of 100 women) who get pregnant on the ring.

Ugh!

I said, well doesn't all the literature say it is 99% effective? She replied that yes, theoretically, it is 99% effective, but that is with PERFECT use, and perfect use is pretty impossible to obtain outside of lab conditions. In reality, with "normal" use, the effectiveness is 92%.

Still, 92% isn't bad for a birth control method. But still, I would take a test immediately if I were you.... just because of my experiences. I don't want to make you panicky or nervous, I just like to share that story with other women since the package information doesn't necessarily make those effectiveness numbers very clear.

Good luck, and I hope all is well!

I thought about not weighing in this week. I weighed 170 on Thursday, so I decided to try again Friday. Same. And now Saturday, I have waited until the last possible day... and still the same. I thought about not weighing because I am having bloating problems this week. I have been VERY good all week. I exercised for over an hour every single day. And these are intense workouts too- running 6 miles, spin class, weight training classes, etc. I counted my calories and had more deficits than maintenance days, for sure. Last night, in a last ditch effort to post a loss, I swam laps at the pool for an hour instead of joining my friends for happy hour.

I am trying not to feel frustrated, but I am wondering what I am doing wrong. It's not that I'm "eating too little"- I burn about 2400-2600 each day and eat 1900-2200 accordingly. Perhaps I am overestimating my burn and underestimating the cals?

Anyway. It's a new week and I will not let this derail me. Must continue trying!

Hope everyone else has had more success than me!

I, Katie, do solemnly swear that for the rest of the month of September, I will cut out unplanned snacking- especially after arriving home from work.

I have the biggest unplanned snacking problem in the history of womankind. When the clock hits around 4 pm at work, I start getting restless and foraging for things to eat at the office. Then after my workout, I'll come straight home and immediately stuff my face with all kinds of things as I am roaming around the kitchen thinking about starting dinner. I've tried all kinds of techniques to stop this from happening. Frontloading my calories doesn't work, because I tend to eat like crazy upon coming home regardless of hunger, so then my calorie intake is even more for the day. I am an avid exerciser and work out 6 days a week. However, I've been steadily gaining weight since my snacking way outpaces my exercise, no matter how much exercise I get. I even ran a relay marathon this year, and while I was training I gained 5 pounds from overeating.

For the rest of this month, I vow to corral the problem through sheer willpower alone! I'm saying only until the end of the month, because that seems a reasonable timeline.

I'm joining too. I like this schmooze and lose idea... it has a ring to it! I've been cc-ing for a few years now. I used CC to lose 30 pounds, never quite making it to my goal weight, and then gained 10 back. While I have been maintaining for around a year, I am finally tired of it and want to succeed once and for all!

I was just thinking about kicking things into gear around the beginning of September, so this is perfect. I'm looking forward to this group! I'll be back on Friday with my weight... haven't stepped on the scale in a few weks so I'm not sure how pretty that will be!

The Lounge But Horseback Riding Is So Easy. Apr 13 2009
22:39 (UTC)

Seems like the conversation has morphed into whether or not riding is a sport, not whether it is easy. I'm going back to the OP- I can relate! When I told my boss I was taking riding lessons, he looked at me funny and said "isn't that like riding a bike?"

arrrgh! I tried to explain that I am learning horsemanship skills, and how to do rollbacks and lateral movements, but he just looked at me like I was crazy.

I've been riding my whole life and everytime I ride there are new challenges. My muscles continually get sore, and I actually work up quite a good sweat on a lot of days. Yes it is physically demanding, but it is also mentally demanding as we strive to focus on communicating with an animal that is often incredibly sensitive to what we are thinking. Those "passengers" who just pull the reins? They are often put on gentle horses that know the ropes and are taught to basically ignore most everything the hapless rider is doing. So somebody with one or two recreational trail riding experiences might view it as "easy".

I agree it is demeaning when people look upon something we perceive as challenging as "easy", but the best bet is to ignore those kind of careless comments. Just know lots of riders out there know the feeling!

And as for the "sport" discussion: an easily obtained definition from the internet reveals that a sport is an athletic activity requiring physical skill AND competition. So most anything could be a sport. Ice skating, bowling, fishing. And of course, horseback riding.

I love exercising and don't really take many days off. I do mix up the exercise so I am using different muscles day after day, and I listen to a trainer at my gym- she says if I am very sore after a workout (usually a strength training session), then it is better to do light cardio (walking, jogging, etc) then to do nothing the next day. But definitely take a rest from whatever it was that made you sore!

Happy to see there are other crazy people out here this morning!

I plan on doing some rough estimates to make sure I don't go waaaaay out of line, that's all. No counting, but every so often I'll do some quick estimates in my head. After a few years of counting, I'm pretty good at it by now.

But! I plan on giving thanks for the fact that I am so fortunate in this world to be able to have too much food around me. I am grateful today that I have to watch my weight in the first place. I am quite certain that the alternative of not enough to eat would be much more tragic. With that, let's all go enjoy a piece of pie, we're lucky people!

Happy Thanksgiving!

The Lounge Graduate School Nov 11 2008

I agree with the other 2 posters above me- graduate school can be expensive and not always ideal for career advancement- especially if you don't know what you want to go to school for. I think getting a couple years work experience is a great idea.

I got my bachelor's in biology, and always wanted to work in the field of environmental science. I put off grad school and ended up landing a good job in my field. Meanwhile there are tons of masters students constantly applying at my company who are turned away because they don't have enough "real life" experience, or are overqualified for entry level positions. The thing is- I discovered through my work experience that having a master's degree would have cost me a lot of money and not led to any increase in salary. Those kinds of things I would have never known had I just launched right into grad school.

That's not to say that someday I won't decide to go to grad school- but only if the degree would lead me to a specific desired goal. With that said, grad school can create wonderful opportunities, but I would definitely be sure of what you're aiming for.

Whatever you decide, good luck to you!

Hi. I'm sure you'll get all kinds of differing opinions on this one, but here's my two cents:

In my experience, I've never had a "where is this going" talk if it's obvious that we both want to be together and equally obvious that neither of us is seeing other people. If both people are so happy and in love, nobody would even want to date anyone else, no need for discussion. In the throes of a passionate burgeoning relationship, to even think about seeing anyone else would seem outlandish! That is the kind of situation that doesn't require "the talk".

However, if you would like some additional security, I doubt bringing up "where are we going" would really matter if the man really is into you. He will be happy to provide you with whatever reassurance you need. If this makes him uncomfortable, you may get a good inkling that he's not into commitment.

That said, 2 months is really early on in a relationship for that kind of talk, especially since you only see each other once a week or so. With that in mind there is a fine line. I'd definitely stay away from suggestions of marriage or children or even your vacation plans for next summer together.

I hope that helps. In the meantime- congrats on your new love! And I know you don't want to hear this- but relax and enjoy the ride (especially the fun butterflies)!

Claire had a good suggestion, I might just watch comedy central from now til election day. Maybe the humor will take the edge off. There's little "real news" out there right now anyway, just reports of accusations and candidates regurgitating the same things during rallies in swing states.

It will all be over soon!
