I think swimming is a great excercise period!  Again, we need to focus on what we like doing and what makes us feel good.  This is a lifestyle change.  Swimming also helped me quit smoking years ago. I would swim 2 miles a day.  It gave me the same high and low smoking did!  I love to swim and say keep at it.  You are moving your body and that is always good!  I also coached you can certainly kick it up a knotch by adding drills.  But, it sounds like you are just starting so maybe you can add that later down the road.  Boy, you are making me want to go take a dip!

yea, for me this is the first time I have a realistic goal. I am very tall and can weigh about 20 pounds more and look like I way 20 pounds less!  Lucky that way.  I want to be a size 14 and am now an 18.  For me, I want to be able to eat. I don't want the weight I pick to be a struggle daily.  So, that has also helped me alot.  I notice on this thread we all focus too much on the outcome instead of this being a lifestyle. Someone had just started working out and was swimming.  Some of the responses were kind of negative like that isn't going to do it for you!  I think if you feel good and find an excercise you like keep doing it.  I think those kinds of attitudes continue the diet thought and cycle.  Finally at 47, I want to be free of the diet cycle.  Again, check out overcoming overeating.  It has some really good advice!

I used to coach swim team.  There are a lot of drills you can do.  The drills really kick your butt.  You can order some books off Amazon.  Get one on drills.  Of course, doing laps is just as good but adding the drills really kicks it up a knotch.

I am a broken record but I love turbo jam.  You can get it on beach body. I also like the old firm that has a compilation of different work outs.  It is about 40 minutes.  I actually got the new firm set and enjoy the 40 minute aerobic work out.  Good luck

I took the car and mapped out different areas that equaled 3 miles.  We also have some man made lakes that I walk around. Most are about 2.5 miles so I add on another 20 minutes. I try  to walk for 60 minutes.  That is usually good enough for me.

I always kick myself if I don't do my work out first thing in the morning.  By the time it becomes later then 11 forget it.  The chances of me doing it become less. I like to get it over with.  That way it is done and it isn't hanging over my head. I do have a flexible schedule now but when I worked I still did it in the AM, I just made myself get up that much earlier.  At this point, many years later, if I don't work out I miss it.  So, the earlier post is right.  21 days to create a habit, good advice.  Just do it you will be glad you did.

Do you like swimming are you enjoying it?  To me, that is what is important.  You are finding a way to move your body and get healthy. I think we focus too much on the outcome down the road instead of do we like it and is it good for us? I am a swimmer although I have not lately. Swimming always tones me, makes me stronger and I always feel better.  So, keep swimming it does a body good!

the easy answer is to stop dieting!  Hard to do for sure.  For the last two years I have worked on and prayed to be healed of my food issues.  I am learning how to eat like a normal person.  All foods small portions.  I also do excercise 6 days a week. I guess for me I have tried to change the focus from diet to life style.  Having said that, I still am working on losing weight thus some part of me sees it as a diet.  I suppose a person who never had a food issue wouldn't see their natural eating habits as a diet.  I think it is our perception.  The more I have become uninvested in the scale, clothes size and the idea I just have to lose X amount of weight the diet mentality is slowly losing its grip.  It has been a really really long process.  Good luck

Well, I am glad to hear you don't just eat a2/3 cup cereal. I have found that even my higher end cereals, I make a mix it is about 275 calories not including milk, still leave enough room in the day to eat enough.  My problem has been staying on it. I can have anywhere between 1750 and 2000 calories depending on my work out schedule. I am quite physically active.  I know that when I make the right choices there is plenty of food and I am not really even hungry!  Your weight chart here is inspiring.  I am focusing on the New Year and really finally doing this for real.

For me,  swimming has not built muscles say the same as weight training does.  I love swimming though and coached for a couple of years.  I think it is all around the best excericse because it is soo easy on the joints and works the whole body.  Whenever I include swimming in my weight loss journey,  I feel better and seem to lose more weight.  It always tones.  It does a body good!

Thanks for the thoughtful response.

To be honest, I think I don't want to lose weight only to gain it back again. I have lost and gained weight more then once and frankly that is not going to work again. I think I also am afraid of being too hungry like when I did getting thin and only could have 1400 calories a day.  Now, I lost like 80 pounds but it took about a year.  I kept it off for a good while but eventually gained it again.  In high school, I became a binger and went through an aneroxic stage.  I think I am just soo sick of the whole food issue and that is probably part of it.  Yet, I don't like the way I look.  In my mind,  loving myself does not mean white knuckling it until noon so I can eat something.  I am also afraid I can't lose the weight.  Partly because I can't stick to it, partly because of menopause and well I have tried for the last 5 years and have gotten no where.  Also because I am not willing to only eat 1400 calories a day.  I also don't have the interest in counting every calorie.  I am soo sick of food being this thing in my life whether it be losing weight or not.  It is the monkey on the back you know?  Diets don't work if they did I wouldn't have had to do so many. I was looking into Jenny Craig today.  This girl on the blog lost like 50 pounds but then went off it.  In like three months she had gained all of it back but 14 pounds.  This is what I am talking about.  I have tried to do this on or off for like 5 years and am the same size.  It is this incidious thing in my life and I just hate it.  I know what I need to do but I just don't have the umph to do it. I hear what you are saying.  You are saying arn't you worth it?  Well, I don't know if that is the right quesition.  Fat, thin, over eating, under eating has been a theme in my life for most of it.  I am just plain sick of it yet I don't seem to be able to come to terms with it either way.  I really appreciate your points and think they are good ones. On some level, I guess I just don't care enough yet I still care enough to keep trying.  I know I sound like such a whiner and honestly that is not how I mean to come across. I am aware I am making the choices and it is up to me. I think I am just really confused at this point as to what will work for me.

That is a good question. I am not sure how to log them either.  The cardio one's I just do as aerobics but the weight ones I am not sure.  By far, when I do the firm and turbo I see my biggest results.  The older firms that were 60 minutes I figure have to burn between 400/600 calories. I was never sure how much you burn doing weights.  Maybe a lifter could hook us up?

swimming is an all around body toner.  I always lose weight when I swim. It is good for you and your joints.  swimming seems to tone more then build muscle for me anyway.  If you like it, you are doing it and it feels good keep it up.  It makes my arms and legs much stronger.  That is for sure!

well, i need to lose 60 pounds if not 70. I started on this site back in, oh I don't know, at least 6 months. I suppose if I had stayed on something at this point I would be thinner. I am really struggling with losing weight this time in my life. I do good for about a week to three weeks and then I just eat whatever and how much I want.  Then, I go on it again for the same amount of time and stop.  Of course, it is not enough time to see a difference or get any sort of traction so I think I have convinced myself that I just can't lose weight.  I saw some pictures of me and hate the way I look but don't seem to have the drive, determination or whatever it is I am lacking to follow through.  Plus, I don't want to be hungry.  I am really in a pickel. I wish I could either shut it and lose it or be OK with where and how I look.  I have always been able to do a diet when I put my mind to it but not this time.  I say to myself if you really wanted it you would do it.  So, do I not really want it?  I don't know. Is anyone else having this same problem in the group. OF course, I am 47 so the weight trickles off too. I think I should just do Jenny Craig or something but I refuse to do any more diets and I like to use organic. I am a great cook so I dn't really want to be eating that kind of crap.  I am so over this but I am not.  I know I am making all the choices and it is all up to me. I just don't know why I am not sticking to it!

I have two big boy dogs Rory and Tully.  Tully is a goldendoodle, he is hilarious, my fluffy bear and big at 90 pounds.  My Rory is an English Choc lab, my cuddle bear, ball horder and 100 pounds.    We walk 3 miles every day.  We either walk in my neighborhood, lots of hills, ugh, or go around the many man made lakes in the area.  They are great for me because no matter what they want their walk and I have to oblige!  Or else, they will follow me around all day and drive me nuts!  They also love to drive in the truck so it is an outing when we head for the lake.

Karen, I am so sorry to hear about your pup.  I have always had dogs and have two big one's in my life right now. I lost my dog Beau about 4 years ago and to be honest I was sad for like 6 months.  Losing a dog is hard and sad and you need to give yourself some down time.  Instead of worrying about your weight and work out plan just let it go for a couple of weeks.  It will always be there when you get back.

Beth, I am not sure how old your son is?  I have two teens couldn't be more different.  My daughter is a good student in the fact that she studies about 4 hours a day.  My son, well he plays a lot of XBOX, but somehow he is still on honor roll.  Over the years, I pushed and put soo much energy in to his study habits.  In the end, he is exactly the same as he was like 4 years ago!  I see now he is who he is.  He will have to have the consequences of his choices.

That is not to say we shouldn't parent, insist on finishing homework etc.  but I do think we get too invested in their school work and habits.  I say you start giving consequences when he doesn't do his homework.  You could email the teacher and ask what is due every week and then check it to make sure it is done.  After a while, that may create a new and better habit he can carry out on his own.  On the other hand, he may be exaclty the same 4 years from now.  Either way, it will all work out.  Don't know if this is translating correctly via email but I am 47 and looking back I see how hard I made some things for myself and worried needlessly.  I guess I am tyring to pass on a little wisdom just don't know if I am doing it well.  Good luck, Tully

Well, my approach is trying to change my behaviour, potions and my tendency to binge.  I am getting better but still have a long way to go.  Ihave been the same size for 5 years so I see that as a positive.  Even though it isn't the size I want to be, I haven't gained nor lost.  I think that is better for my physically then going up and down.

I admit, I saw some infomercial this weekend for the Thurmond program and I was thinking about getting it for a good 5 minutes.  The truth is no weight loss system is going to stop me from eating a whole cake.  I know there are people that have just gained their mid-life 20 pounds but my eating problem is truly an eating disorder.  So, I know it is going to be slow going.  I guess I have finally excepted that.  I also think at this age almost 47, I have a lot on my plate then just weight I want to lose.  I think in our 20's we could just focus on us and diets could be obsessive.  Not only do I not have the time, nor any of us do, to do that it is unhealthy and frankly I think a waste of time and energy.  The more evolved I become as a person I recognize the sillyness of body image but I want to be the right size for me which I think is a 14.  Maybe 18, what I am, is the right size because I have stayed here for years.  I work out every day and eat well, obviously too much, buttt I wish I could just accept myself here but I Don't think that is happening. Not yet anyway, I keep giving it up though.  Tully

Thought I would pop in.  Have not been on for a couple of weeks.  Still struggling with the whole weight thing and body image.  Some days I think this is it I will remain a size 18.  Have been one for about 5 years now.  The upside to me of that is I have not gained any in over 5 years and I have not gone up and down.  The down side is I want to be a size 14.  So, either I need to sh** or get off the pot. I seem to do better during the week then the weekend, no surprise. Frankly, I wish I could be happy here but I can't be sooo onward I go.

Jem you hit the nail on the head.  We do what we want to.  Sometimes,  I hate to be reminded of that but it is true.  Is the 10 pounds really bothering u and is that really over weight for your body?  I have a lot more then 10 pounds to lose and I have yet to do it.  I have to agree with Jem part of me just doesn't care enough and I don't want it that badly.  When I want cake, I want it.  So, I have to decide do I want to get back to a size 14 badly enough to do the work needed?  So far, the answer is no.  Having said that, I will say it is more complicated then that but in the end that is pretty much the jist.  Those of us with eating disorders from a young age are truly struggling with something more then just losing weight.  But, in the end, I am making choices every day including when I binge.

I agree that the main problem in this country right now is our behaviour with food.  Although there is probably a handful of people that truly have some rare condition that causes obesity, most of us have food disorders, eat too much and don't exercise. I look back to when I was a teen and realize,  for the most part , people were normal size.  Even if you were considered heavy, it was more like plump or chubby.  Today,  we have such a problem with body image, correct portions, exercise and filling voids in our life due to the loss of the neighborhood.  I think a large part of our problem is due to the diet industry and large portions.  I have struggled with yo yo dieting for several years, in the beginning I was not fat but my father always told me I was, thus starting to diet.  It was when I went on the diets that I started gaining weight.  Also, started the binging.  I myself have struggled with binging for most of my adult life and can tell you it has been really hard to overcome but I am the one doing it.  I believe we create our experience in all avenues of our life so this issue for me is no different.  I think getting rid of the diet industry and the pharmacuticals is a start.  Then, stopping all super size and increasing excercise.  This has become a mess!  We have an incorrect weight chart for one and really a scale is not a good definition of body mass.  We really need serious change in this country and another diet is not going to solve it nor is surgery!

I find with excercise you just have to do it.  I am soo conditioned now I work out 6 days a week.  I do turbo, walking 3 miles the firm and swim.  You need to find what you like.  I think the earlier the better too!  At first it is hard to get out there but once you create a habit, 21 days, it is pretty easy.  The phrase just do it really does the trick here.  My big problem is binging and only staying on my calorie count for like a week.  I am soo tired of the food issues. I have had them since 8th grade and it is such a monkey on my back. I quit smoking, and drinking but this has been sooo hard to over come!  I think I really need to get back in my prayer chair because this seems soo much bigger then all my other addictive hurdles!

Hi all,

Have posted but not on this particular thread.  I am 46 and am really struggling with losing the weight.  I have gotten a lot better at not binging and I excercise 6 days a week. The not binging part, I still do but nothing like I used to is great!, but I am not losing the weight.   To put it in a nutshell I am at a point of burn out with food and all its issues.  I have not been on a diet for several years but before that I was always on something.  I have huge food issues which stem wayyy back. I know a lot of people on this site are in the same boat.  Now, I have husband, kids, dogs, jobs etc. and frankly have little energy left over to be consumed with the food I eat.  Also, if I want cake, I want cake.  You know what I mean?  When I was younger, I was soo dedicated to losing the weight and had all these incentives.  That isn't the case anymore. I want to be a size 14 but have wanted that for like three years now and am still a size 18.  I don't like what I see in the mirror but I am not willing to deprive myself of the calorie intake to start seeing the difference.  I don't seem to be able to stay within my food limit long enough to see a difference.  When I was young I would decide that's it I want to lose this weight, and I did.  I have not been able to do that now for almost 7 years.  I know it is calorie in and out etc.  Actually the formula is quite easy but for some reason I am soo afraid of being hungry.  I was on several starvation diets when I was younger and I think that left a really bad memory and impression on me.  I feel like sh** or get off the pot. I don't seem to be able to do either.  Is anyone else in this age group struggling with these same issues?
