Weight Loss Interesting question regarding metabolism Apr 17 2009

I've always wondered this. Although body fat it slightly metabolically active, I don't think it's a huge amount. Can you link me to a calculator based on lean mass?

I workout about 5-9 hours per week. That involves:

42 min running 3x per week
at least 48min incline training, 3x per week
1 to 1 1/2 hour hikes, 3x per week
1 hour yoga
40 min weights

So yes, I do way less resistance/weight training than cardio, but climbing up hills has sure made my butt/legs strong, so I wouldn't say that cardio is good for nothing, it's the best overall calorie-burner....

Don't fret! There are calculators to do this for you. www.phord.com/cc is a good place, besides this site, to start. You can click tools, then calorie target in the menu at the top of these forums.

Do any of you gals who went from 120 to 110 SWEAR that you were sedentary (aside from workouts) while eating 1400 calories ? I'm at 130 pounds, trying to get back to 110 ish. I'm 5'1 and a half, and I've upped my calories and my exercise level and it appears that I'm not getting leaner, or worse -  just gaining weight :(

Well, there is one train of thought that believes that saturated fat from good sources can be good for you. To me, it just seems like people trying to sell more coconut oil, but the point is, you do need SOME saturated fat for hormone function etc.

I believe that there was a study recently that claimed that eating more calories in the morning was a good thing:

And I must add - there are ALOT of people who really believe that too, or at least use it as an excuse to not change. E.G., my sister. She subscribes to all that line of thought, and constantly puts down and discourages me and my mom, saying that we''re going to be fat anyways. We keep telling her "Well it's been 4 years, and it's not going bad thus far..."

She reads things like "The Obesity Myth" and "Fat!SO?", and.....wow it's just getting old.

Oh I was just wondering :) I don't know if there is such a thing as too many omega 3s, especially as so many people eat so few of them.

Anyways, you could try a couple tbsp of peanut butter a day, add a protein shake (I do that, the liquid calories don't seem to fill me up)

Why low fat? There are lots of foods with healthy fats (like omega 3's) that you could eat to easily bump up your calories.

98% of DIETS fail because people do them untill they lose weight, then go back to what they were doing before that made them gain weight in the first place! People need lifestyle and habit changes, not attempts to fix something followed by a quick return to what caused the problem in the first place.

How do you feel? If you feel some symptoms of overtraining, then maybe cool it off a bit - but otherwise, keep it up!

Our judgments of what is and isn't active is based on comparison - often compared to couch potatoes! I think we're built to move and be active, so rock on!

Original Post by coreyander:

If people are willing to jump in 100% and work to find the shopping schedule that works for them and their wallet, they can make it work and save alot of cash.

I repeat, I know that it is tempting to use personal anecdotes as evidence, but they can't be used to make valid generalizations.

I buy fresh produce very cheaply as well, but that doesn't mean that *everyone* has the same luxury.  Unless you are suggesting that every neighborhood is just like your neighborhood, it isn't fair to assume that the choices that you make are available to everyone.  Pointing out that "I can get great produce from the place that I live" is not sufficient to demonstrate that everyone can get cheap produce where they live.

It is great if people just want to take pride in the fact that they have access to healthy foods at a low cost, but I take issue with the suggestion that everyone has the same opportunity.  One can be perfectly willing, but lack the opportunities that are readily available to others.

I have to respectfully disagree. I think opportunities may be different, but there, nonetheless.

No matter how many calories I eat, high or low, I cannot break this 130 pound barrier. I'm 5'2, 130 pounds, 20 years old and female. THIS SUCKS.
I starved myself through highschool, so I'd assume that my BMR has suffered accordingly, but shouldn't a year and a half of eating at least 1200 calories have brought it back up to snuff? I'm dying here!

I workout 5-8 hours a week, averaging around 400 calories from exercise per day, and still - zip.

All I know is that when my mom and I started eating healthy foods, we saw our food costs drop from over $10 to around $5 per day. You can buy lentils and rice in bulk, then purchase fresh veggies and fruit seasonally and buy weekly sales. At our local Henry's Farmers Market they have "double ad wednesdays", where you get both the previous the next weeks sale prices. We shop on wednesdays. AND we have a membership to Costco, and buy in bulk there as well. Salad greens, apples, bananas (buy TONS and freeze them! They are only 1.30 something per 3-4 pounds) not to mention the seasonal things that they bring in. You can buy big bags of frozen veggies there, too.

If people are willing to jump in 100% and work to find the shopping schedule that works for them and their wallet, they can make it work and save alot of cash.

ONE meal that I used to eat from taco bell or mcdonalds was easily $4-5. For ONE meal.

I think the best thing a parent can do is just ignore food.  My parents made such a big deal out of serving sizes and not eating "bad" food that I got really obsessive about when I could "eat" for real.  I hoarded, and would get whatever I could when they weren't around or went out.  Even though I knew they would yell at me for eating when they got back.  And this was just because I was a little chubby as a youngster. (I'm literally talking like 8 years old, some of my oldest memories of my parents are of being nicely told to stand straight so my tummy doesn't stick out, or carefully measuring out a tiny bowl of tortilla chips, or being sternly instructed not to eat at a friend's house.)

Yes make healthy meals, keep most sweets out of the house, but don't make it a priority in your kid's life, or ya know, it's going to become his/her PRIORITY.

I totally agree with this. I think the best thing to do is not buy any junk or sweets, and only keep the house packed with good foods. Don't ever focus on why something is BAD, but focus more on WHY the good foods are good! Emphasize the healthy, downplay or ignore the bad. The kids might question why certain foods are never in the house - just say "Because this is what we eat, HERE. The foods we eat here are more healthy and nutritious" etc etc.  I don't think it's a huge deal to let the kid eat birthday cake at someone else's house, or have a little bit of junk food at school (though I MEAN a little bit - I don't mean let them eat the crappy lunches every day! THAT is an issue that must be fixed. It just can't be this way any longer.), but let them know that in your house, only the good stuff will fly. I think making something taboo, in it's entirety, only makes the kids rebel and want it more.

And also, in response to nedlptr - I'm close to my goal weight, so at most I'd be happy with a loss of 1.5 pounds per week. I don't want to go too fast and then balloon back in the weeks following.

I'm pretty sure that I should be alright (and losing) with 1500 calories, but again, I'm not sure how accurate all these calculators are...

according to http://www.internetfitness.com/calculators/bm r.htm I should burn 2783 calories on days I workout - right.

According to http://www.nutritiondata.com/tools/calories-b urned I should burn 2709 on days I workout - again, right.

http://www.active.com/fitness/calculators/cal ories.htm# says I burn 2081 with the activity level set at moderate. That's a big discrepancy from the previous 2 calculators.

http://www.ahealthyme.com/topic/calneed says I burn about 2065, and I should eat around 1565 to lose a pound a week.

I'm just saying, some calculators give ginormous numbers for your calories burnt, others...not so much.

***and other calculators, like phord.com/cc and http://www.self.com/calculatorsprograms/calcu lators/calorieneeds say I need more like 1905 calories to maintain, and that would mean to eat around 1400 calories per day to lose a pound per week.

Weight Loss 1200 calories/day ---- GOOD or BAD?? Apr 07 2009

Ok. Well, since you have alot of weight to lose, according to Jillian Michaels (who is NOT a nutritionist/dietician, but she knows her stuff!) you should be able to have that type of deficit with no problem***. On the biggest loser the women eat around 1200 calories per day, work out for hours and they do fine. BUT I think if you're not "racing to the finish line", you should eat a bit more. Calculatore your BMR here www.phord.com/cc and see what you get. I'd eat at least 1500.

*** the reason being that when you have that much body fat to lose, your body recognizes it and will not plateau or go into "starvation mode", because it knows that it has a large amount of energy to give up. But once you get into the vanity pound area, you have (HAVE) to eat at least your bmr.

I would also add - go with how you feel. If you are STARVING on 1200, then obviously you won't be able to keep it up long term, and then it's fruitless. It is better to lose slower - but in a manner that you can maintain for long term - than do something drastic and painful, only to keep at it for a couple of weeks.

Good thread, and I agree with all the previous posters - it is SO hard to lose weight when you're short.

I eat (now) about 1300-1600 calories a day, the most I've "allowed" myself to eat in a long time. I struggled with my body in highschool, and ate around or less than 800 calories for about a years period. Yes, I lost weight, but then I steadily started gaining when I upped to 1000 calories...then kept gaining when I went  to 1200...so now I'm trying to exercise my butt off, and eat a fairly normal amount of calories for a 5'1+1/2 inch, 130 lb 20 year old female. Saw progress for a couple of weeks, but that progress has recently been erased and not through any calorie changes that mathmatically add up to more than 3500 calories :\

I'm still sticking with it. I'm trying to focus on my athletic ability/improvement more than my appearance.

I usually eat about 300-400 calories 90 minutes before my workouts, along with taking some green tea/ natural caffeine capsules. This particular morning I only ate 200 calories of some granola, berries and almond milk....

thanks guys! I think the answer may just be - sometimes your body just needs a break. I do the whole "do 10 minutes first, then decide" thing - well today I was able to to that for 14 minutes, but then it was just over. I think the poor amount of sleep that I got on wednesday night is rolling over to today :\

Hey! I have similar stats, but I'm about an inch and a half taller and heavier too - 128-130 pounds. I eat around 1300-1400 a day (although the last week I've been naughty ;)! more like 1500)

I've never been told to eat more though. But I totally can relate with the gaining a pound after working out, too. I don't know what the answer is, but I'll agree with the previous poster and say that it might be sodium for you. For me, it's probably not because I only ever add salt to popcorn, and I prep all my own meals.
