I walk at about 4 or 4.5 MPH, and that's at a leisure pace. I can run about 6 MPH.

To work on skinny_kitty's thinking:

You have three main sources of energy - carbs/gylcogen, protein, and fat. That's in order from least to greatest. Once you burn off those carbs (which doesn't take long at all), you're moving into another mode of efficiency. Historically, people didn't run for no good reason; it was for survival purposes. As skinny_kitty said, your body thinks there's something urgent going on. If you're not properly trained for the distance you are running, the lactic acid will build up and stop you so much quicker. That's why some really successful runners constantly train their lactate systems.

Some people aren't going to do programs all in one shot. I was fortunate enough to finish C25K without any hangups, but I know some people that started BEFORE me and still aren't finished. I finished in early August, btw. And guess what? They're still plugging along, and none of us think they have failed. It's just taking longer.

Maybe you need to strengthen your legs. Leg strength is CRUCIAL to running. If you have weak legs, you're not going anywhere...and fast. Do some weight training. Also, don't drink too much water before a run. I drink 8 oz. right before my runs, and that's it. Chugging too much water will only create "sloshing" in the tummy and weigh you down. Wait at least an hour after eating to run. Better yet, don't eat before a run. Eat after.

Can't think of anything else. HIH!

(Have you ever seen a long-distance runner with bulky muscles?)

I've never seen anyone who wasn't 'chemically enhanced' with bulky muscles.

Semantics. I understood what she meant. Some sprinters have very bulky legs, and that's what alot of women want to avoid. Running hasn't improved my legs too much, but I am getting this huge quad muscle.

Biking tends to create a nice quad as well. It all depends on what you want from your legs, and what you're willing to do.

Good mid-morning!

How do you runners deal with clumsiness? I'm 6'1" and have always been clumsy. My mother used to jokingly say that I would fall while walking on flat ground. Seriously, I do! I currently walk/jog. I'm working my way up to jogging a mile without having to stop and walk. It's a slow process and I'm obese. At any rate, I always look down while walking and especially do so while jogging. I recently had a nasty spill while simply walking. I hit a patch of rocks (there are quite a few of these on the route I take). I know I have bad form while jogging because of my constant fear of falling. Is there any way for someone like me to avoid falling while not having to constantly look at the ground?

Thanks

I am clumsy too - I often say "I could trip on thin air" - but there is no simple way to get over it besides getting in the habit. I started looking down at my shoes, but then I looked straight ahead at the horizon...that way, you see what's ahead of you, including anything that would get in your way. Sorry I can't help more!

pgeorgian, once I started running in the morning, I refused to eat prior to a run. Anything sugary would upset my tummy and anything heavy (which is what I tend to eat during breakfast) would just lie there, weighing me down and give me a stomachache. After I run, I immediately get the stove going and get a meal in. If you NEED to fuel your run, bring some fitness water, and if you run those distances, get some gel packs.

HAHA, bobev, that has happened to me too! Were they drawstring? I have no hips and they just slide off. Free show for all looking! LOL

Manta, you might be right about the shoe bit. They don't hurt my feet but they might not compliment my gait too well. How are you Kinseis going now? I'm looking into a straight up cushioning shoe. I don't overpronate that much and my left foot def. doesn't. Ughhh, I just wish I could get the right shoe for once!

My school's gym is a complete sausage-fest and I don't feel comfortable weight training there (I know, I can run in front of tons of people but I can't go into the weight room and sweat it out), and I was wondering if there are modifications for home use. Is there one?

Fitness Starting to run-- question for experienced runners Oct 05 2008

I'm not exactly experienced; I've been running since June (I'm a graduate of C25K as of early August) and I top out at about 4 miles now.

I personally do not run everyday - I don't have the time, and I don't want to wreck my body. You see, I was about 50 pounds overweight when I started the program, like you, and your body takes on MUCH more impact. All that weight on your knees...give yourself a day off in between runs. Ice your joints, even if they don't ache. I honestly enjoyed my off days during C25K...I went bike riding, or weight trained. It was pleasant.

You don't need to weight train daily in order to get results - in fact, you shouldn't be weight training daily. If you can incorporate compoud moves, you can get a full body workout 3 times a week and still get the body you want. :)

Things I've learned while running:

- Get appropriate running shoes! And dress for the weather.

- Every person that runs, no matter how slow, no matter how goofy, is a runner. Never, ever forget that. You don't need to look a certain way to be an athlete!

- Get off the sidewalks (and if you can, get off that treamill!) There is so much to see outside, and it's "harder", but when/if you decide to compete in races, you don't have to change venues. ;)

Ah, msmeg, that's easy then!

One day, run. The next, do the weight training. The cardio and weight training kind of even things out...at least I'd do this plan.

I've got to look into this new rules bit. I'm looking for a new weight training regime. :)

Just alternate days. One day, run. Maybe do some upper body with it to save your legs. Next day do lower body. That's what I do and it has been working.

3k is less than 2 miles; 5k is 3.1m.  a 28 minute 5k isn't embarrassing, but it isn't fast.

Now now, pgeorgian...I like you as a poster, but talk about times like that and I might have to throw some gels at you! ;)

I run a 36 minute 5K, and I'm proud of it. It all depends on what you're going for. I'll gladly trade. Better yet, I'll just train to get to that point. That's 9 minute miles right there, which is great for your age. I'm on par speed-wise for my weight (about 180) and I hope by shedding about 30 more pounds, I can get into the 9 min./mile category. I'm already at 10 for a single.

also, tredmils help to propel you forward, while the ground does not. When you are outside you need to do more work in order to move

Exactly. I'm not a fan of treadmills save for the fact that I can see how fast that pace would be, and I think it makes it harder to transfer your running to the road. Just run on the road. Cheap, easy, you get it out of the way.

DO NOT run on the sidewalks. Concrete is the worst surface to run on. If you value your joints (and your sanity - they are almost never level, and you could sprain your ankle one day), move to the shoulder of the road, against traffic. Sometimes that isn't feasible, but do it if you can. Asphalt isn't the best surface, but it's better than concrete. Asphalt gives more than concrete (which doesn't...at all.)

I tell all new runners to just get out there and run. I don't buy the time restriction bit - if you can haul your butt upstairs/downstairs/over to the gym to run, you can leave your house and run, too.

Thanks, everyone! You guys are awesome.

I did one mile in 9:59. I wanted to die afterwards but now that I know it's possible...I'm gonna work up to it!

Mkculs, that's awesome! Running is a even playing field in terms of lifestyle...if you try hard enough, you can be just as good (or better) than your younger, fitter counterparts! :)

Manta, that's amazing! Do you feel like you're moving fast? I know that sounds like an odd question, but even when I was running at a 10 minute mile pace, I didn't feel like I was moving that quickly. You'll kill it!

Bobev, for your age that's fantastic! Even not accounting your age, that's still very respectable. I have the F4 as well, and I sometimes wish I could see splits.

ETA: when do you know your shoes are finished? I give my shoes a fair beating and I have found that the padding on the outside of my left shoe is depressed...ALOT. The other shoe not so much. I only have about 60 miles max on them but I don't know what signs to look for.
