Weight Loss How do I find "filling" low calorie foods? Jan 15 2008

I agree with you that dieting can get pretty hard...especially when you are hungry.  I did a lot of research and found that if you eat a good healthy bfast...u wont get as hungry and munch unnecessarily snack the rest of the day, also I read spreading out your meals to about 6 times a day increases ur metabolism as well as helps your weight loss:

BFAST:  If u go with cereal, add an egg or 2-3 egg whites and a fruit like banana or apple..., or OATMEAL or CREAM OF RICE

Mid morning:  A handful of almonds, a fruit or a smoothie

Lunch:  Salad greens+2 hard boiled eggs (if u didnt have it in the morning) or chicken breast with olive oil, vinagerrette or salad dressing

Mid afternoon snack:  Celery, carrot sticks and hummus (good source of protein-very healthy and filling but measure so u dont go overboard)

Dinner:  Salmon, green beans, and 1/2 to 1 cup rice

Evening snack: 1/2 Toast+peanut butter+apple or dates

I think the important PROTEIN and FIBER!!!

OOOH, i hated water too.

I found a great way to keep drinking H2O!!

I love the different flavored green teas Lipton offers...there is rasberry, orange/jasmine, mint....i just brew them and keep a jug filled with it in the refrigerator...it helps me lose weight, and I dont need any sweetener cuz the water itself is flavored...but keep it light-otherwise you are gonna want sweetener!

Hey! i know what u mean about sweets and fried foods...try drink lots of water-especially in themorning.  Stay away from salt as much as possible.  Chappathis and Rotis are very healthy-stick to a maximum number of 2 with lots of curries-especially the vegetables..and if u r a non-vegetarian, have more meats than the gravy-which are usually loaded with creams/milk fat, oil, and nuts (the tastier ones)...also as someone earlier said, keep away from potatoes-that means samosas, and bajis....

Something i realized that we all can do is skimp on a meal if u know the next one is gonna be big-like have oatmeal in the morning or cereal-to compensate ur calories.  Another thing i do-is choose a few of the sweets that i LOVe and cant go without tasting (gulab jamuns and milk sweets)-and split it with my husband or my son-that way i get to taste it but i wont have the whole thing.  Lst but not least-dont gobble everything down, eat slowly, stay away from the buffet tables...focus more on socializing and assuring yourself that you look great-that will help you stay away from too much food...

good luck...and happy diwali

Sorry abt the tuna part...that's not recomended more than 2 times weekly-for kids younger than 5 and pregnant women-OOPS-sorry i forgot!-but try eating fish that isnt so high in mercury-i think salmon isnt...but it may take some prepping on ur part...but eggs are very good for baby's brain...the choline in eggs-and eggs are excellent for making-its one of the easiest to make-scrambled (without butter), sunny side up, poached, or use Pam to spray ur pan, and flip it on both sides like a pancake, add a pnch of ur favorite Mrs. Dash with a pinch of salt...make it into a sandwich with whole wheat bread-it will keep ur morning easy and full...

You know, as a medical student, I highly recomend that you dont try to lose ANY WEIGHT!! But try not to gain much either...just make it a point to not gain more than lets say 15 pounds this pregnancy.  Its not surprising that one day your weight is less, then another its more.  It really has a lot to do with the water...during pregnancy there is a lot of water you will be retaining...so even a little salt in your diet, or extra stress on your body can bloat you up...take it as your body trying to adjust to a new situation.

Count your calories, eat the recomended amount for you body to maintain-plus the extra 300 calories for your baby-that is not more than 2 glasses of milk and a banana or another fruit!  Nuts are very good for baby's brain, so is tuna, any vegetable or fruit...all of these need no prep and are easy to eat...anywhere.  Surprising isnt it!  I'm not an obstretician or gynecologist, but I do believe doing low stress exercise-walking at a moderate pace, yoga, stretches and some floor exercises are all very good for you and will keep the rest of your body toned and in good shape.  There are a lot of exercise videos out there that you can use (Denise Austin for example) which is made just for pregnant women...

I hope all this helps...good luck-both for you and baby.  Again, dont try to lose any weight!  That's not a good thing for your baby-maintain, and try not to gain-you will gain some pounds so be prepared mentally for that too.  But if you eat right and tone the rest of your body-getting back in shape within 9 after your delivery should be easier...9months on, 9months off!

I totally understand how u feel.  my sister gave me a few good hints:  #1-buy really cute workout clothes-that U look good in!!

It makes a difference! A lot of workout clothes make us look a lot slmmer than regular clothes...try them on and see what u like.  Get just two pairs and alternate them.

#2 Going with a friend helps big time!  A lot of gyms have free aerobic classes and other group workout classes...going for those will really help u get motivated...cuz its a group thing...and everyone is facing one way...so u can be in the back and still reap the benefits...also u could meet a friend that could be a potential buddy!

#3 Most gyms will have a trainer session for free also. They may first want to take ur measurements and all...just tell them to skip it and that u just want them to show u a few wt lifting/toning exercises to tone ur butt, arms, abdomen, thighs...etc. They basically have to do it...but skip all other things and go to that...

and then do circuit exercises...do like 5 min on the treadmill, 1 rep of arm exercises (which willhelp u catch ur breath) then 5 min on the elliptical, 1 rep for ur abdomen, and stop......I'm telling u, go slow and easy.  The first couple times are the hardest to work up ur ego to go....but if u just think that this is going to help u look better and stay fitter...then think abt what u r going to do first...it'll be a lot easier...i'm sure. let me know how it goes!

I dont understand it whole either, but i do know that after a certain point your body tends to conserve as much as possible if you are not getting enough nutrition/calories.

OUr body works to keep itself going-God made a very beautifully composed and very complex machine.  It doesnt know that u r trying to lose weight, it works to fuel itself as normal as possible.  So when u decrease ur calorie intake, it is thinking:  "oh there might not be enough food available, i need more than this to function properly, let me conserve some energy in case i need more"

-so basically it is slowing your metabolism ( do u notice how u sleep and become sooo tired when you eat less than u should?)- i would think that it is a way that our body slows down to conserve the little energy it has available.

I truly do not know how the math actualy calculates itself, but fitness pros and a majority of  people who lost weight and kept it off are all saying the same thing:  so it must be right-experience is our best teacher, right?

But abt 3 months ago, I was doing the same thing:  I worked so hard, 3-4 days a week on the elliptical and strength training along with eating right 6 out of 7 days a week- i didnt see the scale budge more than 5 pounds- 5 measly pounds!  U can imagine my anger:  We had a vacation and a few gatherings like weddings and family picnics-nobody told me anything except people who knew i was trying!  i was sooo irritated that I just let myself go.  I was like : if it doesnt work then why try!

I stopped exercising, stopped drinking the water 2 1/2 L, stopped worrying abt my calorie intake (of course i didnt binge, but just had a cookie here and there, a 1/2 cup of ice cream, sometimes no bfast, and picked at junk food all day long, didnt look at salt intake), etc.  After 3 weeks, i could truly see the difference.  I think a lot of reasons why u dont lose pounds on the scale when u diet AND exercise, is cuz ur building muscle.  I looked back at the last of the 3 months- the pics lookes soooo good!  I should have kept at it!  I wish I had!  I looked toned, my face looked good, my stomach was always in (without holding it in!!) i mean i truly realized the mistake i did!  Now I'm back in the game....

What i am trying to say is DONT GIVE UP!  U wont realize how much all that effort is paying off.  U probably look so toned  and ur body is getting better day by day!  But that doesnt mean that i recomend the 1000 calorie diet:  its all gonna come back....but exercise and eat right! U will look amazing!!  Give urself another 3 mnths and see where u get at!  Take pics in the same clothes and same position to motivate urself.  I hope i'm not boring anyone but this is my experience!  Good Luck!

EAT BREAKFAST!  At such a young age, that is soooo important.  I try to buy my favorite cereal (right now go lean crunch) 1/2 cup and all bran cereal 1/2 cup wiht half a cup of milk...that's 210 calories...for the days i work out, i get myself an egg and some fruits also....for the protein and the boost of sugars...

GOOD LUCK!

WOW!  CONGRATULATIONS on quitting!  That is truly a huge step.  Im a med student and we have learned that the average smoker takes 7 times b/f he/she finally quits...so that is truly an awesome step you took.

I do agree with fonz94.  Nicotine actually causes ur heart rate and metabolism to increase.  And I'm pretty sure that when u quit, ur body wd have retained some water as well as gone into a "hey what happened to that?" mode.

No worries please! It'll go down in due time.  Watch what ur eating...the food journals always help-sometimes u may be munching on something without realizing it, do the recomended amnt of exercise (about 30 min of aerobic exercise 5 days a week), sleep well, watch ur portion size, and chew on gum!  YES chew on gum....it helps ur mouth and lips do something for a while-so u know u wont munch on anything!  Also drinking the recomended amt of water wil probably help u....

Hope that helps.

angela, thanx for letting me know abt the move. I was kind of in a "giving up " mode for the past month.  The scale wasnt moving and I was working so hard.  But now i realize that I was looking much much better and my clothes were getting much much loser!  So i'm back in the game.  This is great what u have going.  Hope to join the next challenge-i think i'm kind of late for this one.

But 3 cheers for u!  I think this is a wonderful idea...esp the part abt it being a lifestyle change and not abt the scale moving!  Ur not only helping ur self, but ur helping all the others in the game.

YES!  I was too much of a whimp to join a gym without any experience in the physical education department! :0)...

So i started the Walk away thepounds videos almost every day for abt 2 weeks!  Wow, when i went to the gym, i had enough stamina to walk on that treadmill, even run- for a good 40 min without any huffing or puffing!  Basically it served the purpose, that i didnt embarrass myself!  I recomend it to anyone, but mind u, i did get bored after the 2-3 weeks and then i started the gym membership and walking outside.  But if u want to go ahead and continue....Leslie sansone is really good in that she starts u out slow and then increases ur pace....i truly enjoyed it,  Now i am on the elliptical without any problem for a good 40 min...so go ahead and try it.  I got it at walmart for abt 15 bucks...thats just buying a tshirt or a pair of shorts!  So why not?!!

My whole family LOVES cereal.  my dad can eat it 4 times a day!  Most of us likes honey bunches of oats. I do like the special k with red berries and so does my 2 yr old! I used to eat Raisin bran all day when i was pregnant with him...I think a lot of people out there like cereal...

And for me, b/c i like cereal, i rather mix up cereals so that ican have a v. high calorie cereal with a low calorie/high fiber cereal ( like fiber one-1/2 cup with some granola cereal 1/2 serving)...it gives me a good start to my day, i enjoy what i'm eating, i get half my fiber for the day...and its not over my calories.

I do agree with claireelaine though, eating cereal is good for you (as long as its not those high sugary kiddy stuff).  So 400 calories of cereal is for the morning will actually helpu bettr than hurt u...I think eating 400 calories per meal and a 200 calorie snack is the perfect way to stay at 1400 cals (for me)...

Of course dont forget ur fruits, veggies, and makes sure u r getting some protein too.

I do what redflag does, Fiber one mixed with either fruits or another higher calorie cereal that I love-since i already have half a cup of the Fiber one, i add only 1/4 to a third of a cup of the other cereal...i get the taste without the calories, and I stay full all morning!

But it is tedious to keep mixing cereal...so if you aren't inthe mood for all that, try the new honey bunches of oats with strawberries or the one with almonds.  Yummy but 120 calories for 3/4 cup...

Special K with red berries is good too.

Raisin bran-lots of fiber, but it is a little high in calories....but if you buy any bran cereal-you will be eating less calories, keep full all morning, and you can have something like a banana or strawberries to spruce it up.

Notorious cases of water intoxication I found these on that Wikepedia on the web after googling water intoxication.  Apparently it is common in athletes, infants, drug users and psychiatric disorders.  But it is possible.  I think 1 1/2-3 L is the optimum amount a person needs.  But athletes also lose a lot of electrolytes...that's why there are sports drinks out there-to compensate those electrolytes.  Through sweat a lot of sodium is lost, and drinking lots of water at one time dilutes the rest of the sodium left in the body....sometimes leading to abnormalities.   Let me see if I can find how much is the actual optimum amount a person needs and what is overboard....

HI everyone!!  NIce to see so many Indians here.  I have a similar dilemma.  I hope we can continue helping each other. I'm a desi but born and brought up here in U.S.  I live in Texas right now.

I was fine with my weight until I got married-yeah gained abt 10-15 lbs.  then within 1 1/2 yrs had a baby-gained another 30 lbs. AHHH!  And now I cant find a way to lose it all.  I am about 40 lbs. over.

The problem is that when u cook for the whole family its sooo hard.  But i like priya1's suggestions.

I feel like the best thing we can do is exercise  AND watch wht we eat.  The rice thing is the hardest.  since i'm s. indian its even harder...But i've incorporated chappathis (without oil or butter) into my daily foods...

The rice thing is that its sooo much calories...so I have cut it to 1/2 a cup, once a day.  The other problem is that we add a lot of coconut to our dishes....also full of calories and not anything to properly count it.  I think for me the best thing is to eat sandwiches and salads most of my day and stick with the indian stuff only once a day.

Anyway nice to hear from all of u...the advices are all very helpful...i hope you dont mind me adding all of u to my friends list.  thanx...

Ok...Dont get me wrong...cuz I really want everyone to be at a healthy weight no matter what.  But I have a friend who was a resident at the hospital...she would eat oatmeal every single night cuz she didnt feel like cooking, didnt make/eat any bfast and had hospital food for lunch...she lost so much weight (she called it the 800 calorie diet)!  And it was a good thing that she lost-cuz it was all her baby fat...except for the fact that she looked anorexic....(i am a med student so i know what anorexics look like-and i am not at all exagerating).  Maybe it was also the stress of residency-I dont know.  Both my husband and i felt that she looked so much healthier when she ate normally...which she does now...though she complains she got "fat".  I think maybe if you lose weight a healthy way with diet and exercise then your body changes in good ways.  I honestly dont know how you lost the weight, so i cant say the reason people say what they say.  but i do feel that sometimes a person can look like they are overdoing it.
