| mhh well I have had some really really bad experiences with doctors so much so that I do not have one anymore. I know more about myself and my health then any doctor I have met. I also know the tests I need so if I need a test I find a doctor who will order it for me ( such as monitering my thyroid) and I request the results and take care of myself from there. Here is are a few of my most memorable experiences and some of my background. I have exersised my entire life: hiking, rock climbing horse back riding etc... I was always a healthy weight with the exception of 2 illnesses and an injury. I eat a lot so when I became sedentary I would put on 15-20 ls but as soon as I was active again it melted away. I ate healthy ( my parents were vegetarian health nuts lol). One spring I got a "flu" for 2 weeks. I went to the doc. and they said rest, fluids etc... well a month later I was still too weak to work ( worked on a farm) they said sometimes it lingers and sent me home. I went to the docs every 2 weeks for over 3 months and I was running out of money. Finally my doctor looked me in the eye and said "I think you need to come to terms with the fact that this is not physical it is mental and you are depressed" then he handed me the card to a shrink!!!!wtf this was all based on my tests being normal and me looking healthy but being too tired to work. He never discussed anything else with me, I would see him for 5 min. every 2 weeks and he barely spoke to me! I told him to F-off and went to a new doc. I sat down and told her that I was not leaving untill they found out what was wrong with me and they would have to call the police to have me dragged out! I was sent to a specialist and tested for allergies and low and behold I had allergy induced asthma triggered by dust, hay, mold, horses etc... ( everything you find on a friggin farm) she said I was tired all the time becuse I was not getting enough oxygen as my lungs were closing up but just not enough to give me a full blown asthma attack. I took inhaled steroids and it was amazing!!! I had energy again and could work ohhhhh who knew inhaled steroids cured depression!!! So I avoided doctors after that for years and took really good care of myself untill a similar incident happened about 9 years later. It turned out I had Lyme disese but it took over 2 years to be diagnosed and I was told the same thing that I was exagerating, depressed, trying to get attention!!! I even had partial paralysis due to the Lyme and I was still told it was in my head! I was bedridtded for years and lost everything. Thank God I finally found a specialist who believed me however I took so long to discover it that even a year later into my recovery I still have symptoms and nerve damage that my be perminate. I know this seems long but honestly it only touches on the surface of the suffering I have endured because of doctors. Watch Mystery Diagnosis this will help you figure out how to be a good doctor!! If you want to be a good doctor then become a patient yourself even if you have to fake it! Also visit the boards on CFS/PVFS, Fibro, Lyme ( as I was diagnosed with all this crap at one time) and get a feel for what it is really like to have no one listen or believe you as your world falls apart. The specialist I saw who saved my life listened to my story and then looked me in the eye and told me that he believed that what was going on was phsical and he was going to do whatever it took to find out what was going on. I cried! We sat down and went over all my symptoms and my history he spoke to me like I was an intellegent human being capapble of understanding him not like an idiot mortal who was so beneath being a doctor that I could never understand my test results duh.... We sat down and outlined a plan of tests based on the most common causes for my symptoms and he said if he did not find anything we would keep looking. Luckily he did and I have been recovering for over a year now. Anyway I am sorry to write so much but it was really hard to find this doctor. In fact my roomate who was helping me go to appointments said he was shocked at the way I treated and would never have believed it if he had not witnessed it first hand.I honestly cannot even count the number of doctors I saw or only talked to once because they brushed my off. If this specialist was in my state and was a primary care doctor I would be all over it but alas he only does special cases and quite far away. Sorry for the rant :) I was once told of my by someone while I was learning my the ropes in my chosen field that involved working with people that as soon as I stopped loving what I did or was only doing it for the money then it was time to quit because what I had to do took heart and I believe the same is true for being a doctor. |

| Health & Support | Very low heart rate and blood pressure - need advice | May 05 2008 23:03 (UTC) |
|
| You are wrong fdget84. Low BP can be a big problem!! It can be caused by low thyroid and or low adrenal output or heart problems. Exersise did not raise my blood pressure and thats the problem. When you stand up and start walkng or jogging your blood pressure should go up if it doesn't it causes dizzyness, fatigue, light headedness, exercises intolerance, and feeling more tired after you work out then before.
If your BP is low enough to be causeing these symptoms you need to find a doc who will listen. I spent years suffering because people told me I was luckt to have a low BP! if you don't have symptoms good for you but some people do. |

| Health & Support | How to Increase Blood Pressure??? | Nov 30 2007 23:30 (UTC) |

| Hi all
I had very low blood pressure ( not from anorexia but from a health issue) and what helped me was drinking a gallon of water a day ( I know its a lot ) my doc said that keeping my fluid intake high would help. I also had 1/2 - 2 tsp. of salt mixed with the gal. and drank it throughout the day. If I was real bad I would have 1/2 tsp. salt with a glass of water when I woke up in the morning. Surprisingly the days I kept this up I did feel much better. I hope this helps. |

| Weight Loss | Do faster metabolism's really exist? | Jul 22 2007 21:51 (UTC) |

| Personally Jack I believe that that is the exception to the rule. For the most part I believe that it is all about calories burned vs calories consumed. Yes some people have hypo or hyperthyroid. My mom and brother have normal maetabolisms they are very thin My dad and I have normal metabolisms, we exercise alot and when we stop we put on weight simply becaise we eat more. |

| I also have wondered this . I was thin for years and told I was "lucky" even though I had a physically demanding job, ate mostly whole unprocessed foods watched my portions and had very physically demanding hobbies lol. My mother and brother are very thin (they do not get much physical activity)and I used to buy into the fast metabolism thing untill I started really watching them. I eat way more then they do They just do not have much appitite while me and my dad snack all the time and are just plain more hungry so we gain weight easier. I have watched many thin friends and in reality I have not met a single person who has a "fast" metabolism, they just have different appitites. |

| I cut mine length wise and leave the peel on. I then put them on a grill for a few min. When they slip out of the peel they are done (I like them more mushy) Then I put on a plate and drizzle with a Tbs of honey. Oh man if you haven't had grilled bananas with honey you are totally missing out!!! I also have to 2nd Claire, frozen bananas in a smoothie are awsome!!! I also throw in raw cocoa nibs and make it thick, its like banana chocolate chip ice cream yummy!!! |

| I have to 2nd what Claire posted. I visited my friends family they are Italian (He is the 1st generation in another country) I was expecting a big plate of pasta. Nope. Big salad fresh from the garden, fresh veggies, calamari, and a small bowl of pasta it was a side dish not the main course and everyone had just a small bowl of it with homemade marinara sauce. And of course homemade wine. I was very surprised at the portions and the actual food!!! And get this the family was thin!!! | |||
| The Lounge | help for dark circles under eyes? | Jul 22 2007 05:48 (UTC) |

| mmmhhh love I may just try that lol. I am allergic to cows milk but I will try goats :) Speaking of allergies dior I have many food allegies that are delayed and some are subtle. If I avoid all of them my circles get better however if I "cheat" they get darker. So this may be a symptom of allergies. It also got very bad when my low thyroid was undiagnosed. Other than that I use a great concealer from uglogirl.com a mineral makeup company no one ever knows I wear makeup at all. Good luck |

| Many people say that ex. before bed keeps you up and this may be true for some people however I have ex. before bed for years and I sleep better. Even if I ex. in the morning I sometimes do a bit at night just so I can sleep. Try it and if it keeps you up just try something else. | |||

| The Lounge | Landlord and lease question | Jul 20 2007 17:44 (UTC) |

| You could recommend something I do as a landlord that seems backwards but works well. Most leases in my state are 1 year and then automatically renew and become month to month if no one does anything. For some tenents I do month to month for 6 months to a year and then renew to a year lease if we both agree.
This has worked well for me because I have a few apartments in "sketchy" areas. I also like to give young people a first chance but it is risky and its easier and faster to get them out with a with a month to month then to go through the eviction process. By the way I've had college students and they were mostly great. They always paid on time and kept the place nice except they put stickers that I can't get off all over my fridge which is very rude and they fell through the raised flooring in the bathroom and didnt tell us so we had a huge leak we didnt know about and it ruined the entire floor and we had to rip out the whole bathroom and hallway and it has cost us a lot of money!!! Do not hesitate to let your landlord know if you notice a problem we would rather fix something small:) (thats my little rant for the morning lol) Good luck and trust me its very scary when you have put lots of money and hard work into a place and then let go of that control. Trust me the security deposit DOES NOT cover all the damage that a tenent can do and landlords can lose a lot of money. This is a business for them and they have to be careful or they will not last long. Most landlords I know are flexible if you talk to them and come up with a comprimise, good luck. (Pg please edit for me lol) |

I also add a small container of greenbeans and another of fruit. Basically my lunches and dinners are very simmilar lol. I also pack crackers and cheese and olives as a snack sometimes.
I hope this all helps:) |

| Hi all This looks like exactly what I need. I am 5'6 and bouncing from 145-149 My goal is 130-135 (when I get to 135 I will decide)
I'm down from 172 and I am feeling comfortable so I am not that motivated anymore. I was very excited a few weeks ago when I joined the July 4th challange and liked the weekly weigh-ns they really motivated me. Now that thats over I'm just floundering. It may also just be the fact that its ttom lol. Hopefully this group will help re-motivate me to just finish what I've started:) I'm 32, 5'6, 149 today(bloated ttom), goal 135, no deadline. |

| Vegetarian | Superfoods for energy in non-supplement form? | Jul 20 2007 03:18 (UTC) |

| Have you ever tried maca, you can get it in powder form not pill and add it to smoothies. I found it great in the morning as a wake me up. And be careful taking it too late in the day. I have only been able to find it online.
Maca is a root like vegetable from South America. It has been used for increased energy and libido lol I guess it is a supplement so I dont know if it count:) The only other thing I can think of is raw cocoa nibs in a smoothie but that is caffiene. If I think of anything else I will let you know. |

| I just wanted to say that I used to watch a very very overweight guy in my friends neiborhood jog. I did look and the whole time I thought wow good for him!!!!! So you never really know what people are thinking, I did feel bad about staring because I figured he thought I was thinking something bad. The next time I saw him I gave a smile and a thumbs up but I dont know if he saw.
I found a quote a few weeks ago and I have been using it as an incantation. It has really made me think. When there is no enemy within, the enemies outside cannot hurt you. ~African Proverb Best to you all and keep running!!!!!:) |

| I think cottage cheese is a good idea. I also have eaten an avoacado if I have the cals. the fat really really helps me not be hungry but it is a lot of calories.
I also like olives with some crackers and cheese. Ive also found that meat works well for me. Like a a small peice of chicken and green beans wih olive oil like a mini dinner. Stuff like thif really helps me with cravings. |
