| I think smart balance (light is vegan) is better than earth balance, tastes more like real butter. I use it for cooking, baked potatoes, etc. and my family can't tell the difference! | |||

| Vegetarian | i bought black beans. now how should i eat them? | Aug 05 2007 23:16 (UTC) |

| One of the my fav things to do with black beans:
Black bean and corn salsa: 8 oz. dried black beans (cooked until soft w/salt to taste) or 4 cans drained 4 ears of corn, grilled and shucked or 4 cans of corn, drained 1 jalapeno 1/2 bunch of cilantro, chopped 1/2 red onion, chopped Juice of 1 lime Just mix all of the ingredients together and enjoy with rice, guacamole, sour cream (I'm vegan so I use tofutti...yum!), cheese, salsa, lettuce, tomatoes, whatever! I make tostadas with the ingredients, but you can really use it in a lot of different ways! Here's my favorite salsa: 20 chiles de arbol 12-14 tomatillos, depending on your taste 3 cloves garlic 1-2 tsp salt to taste Remove 3/4 of seeds and stem from chiles and discard. In an iron skilled roast remaining seeds and chiles until they begin to brown and remove, add to blender. Clean and remove stems from tomatillos and cook over low heat in iron skillet, turning on all sides until they become soft and light green. Roast garlic cloves in iron skillet while tomatillos are cooking. Add tomatillos, garlic and to blender with chiles and blend until smooth. Very simple and very tasty...kinda like Chipotles hot salsa! |

| Vegetarian | Smart Balance Question | Jul 23 2007 16:51 (UTC) |
|
| I tried Earth Balance, but if you're looking for something that is very close to butter I think Smart Balance is better....that and it has 20 less calories per serving and when you're only at 1,200 a day, every little bit counts! | |||

| Two vegan butters that I use are Smart Balance Buttery Spread (tastes just like real butter) and Earth Balance (a little more "nutty" flavored, not as buttery). They're a great substitute for butter. I used the Smart Balance and soy milk to make vegan garlic mashed potatoes last night for my very omni husband and he couldn't tell the difference. He refuses to eat any recipe that I alter to make vegan so I didn't tell him until he finished and raved about how great it tasted! Ha! | |||

| OMG, that sounds sooooo good! I know what's for dinner now, thanks! Let's see, 6 servings, 205 calories per serving, I'm trying to stick to 1200 calories a day...yep, I'll just have to fast until then so I can eat the whole pot (or all but .15 servings of it!). | |||

| Vodka and diet tonic are a good way to go, with a splash of cranberry juice or lime. :) That way you can still have tonic, but there are no calories in it.
Canada Dry also makes a diet cranberry ginger ale...very yummy as a mixer! |

| I'm reading Skinny Bitch by Rory Freedman and Kim Barnouin, and in the book it mentions that sugar manufacturers sometimes use bone char for decolorizing sugar. So a web search yielded plenty of sites, not just vegan, that mention this as well. Here's a little info from Wikipedia...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bone_char It looks like some companies do, some don't...there are some that are labeled "kosher", but I don't always trust labeling on the package! When I did a Google search, there are plenty of non-peta sources on the web that list various companies that do/do not use bone char. We all trust different sources for information, so look around and determine what's right to you. |

| However I did watch this movie called fast food nation. I reccomend it. Its good. But also an eye opener. Chances are the things happening in the movie dont happen in real life but it makes you think that they could.
laurars24 - If you think the movie is a real eye opener, then read the book that it's based on, which is NON-FICTION! Those things do happen every day, and the movie just barely tips on some of the terrible things that happen as a result of the industry. Eric Schlosser did an exhaustive amount of investigation and research for the book, so if you thought the movie was good, the book will really blow your mind! |

| Vegetarian | Why buy processed foods? | Jun 05 2007 00:06 (UTC) |

| I don't buy the "too busy to cook" explanation.
Don't buy the "too busy to cook" explanation? I have four sons and work extensive hours. Our daily routine consists of waking up at 5:30 am to get ready for school/work. I don't arrive home until 5:30 pm, in which we have to be to the baseball field by 5:45 every night of the week. We have a game at 6:15, then one at 8:10 so we don't arrive home until 10:15 most nights. Yes, I LOVE to cook, so much so that I would like to pursue a culinary career later in life when my kids are grown. BUT, as you can see, some of us truly have to rely on the evils of processed and fast food as much as we dislike it. I do try to prepare as many meals as possible on the weekend (and during the weekdays that we do have free time) to eat during the week, but again, on the weekend we have endless activities aside from cleaning a house where 6 people live, homework, cooking, etc. and we're just plain exhausted sometimes! I would love more time, but just simply don't have that luxury! |

| I love "Vegan Planet"...very informative and it has a lot of variety in the recipes, most of which are very simple and easy to make. I don't know if you have a Half-Price Books in your area, but I LOVE this store...lots of good quality used books for an extremely low price (some as low as a dollar!). They have a Vegan and Vegetarian cookbook/health section that's always full! |

| Here's a link to their website in which you can look at the ingredients to both their regular bars and builder bars. It doesn't look like there's gelatin in them, but check the flavors you like and make sure, you never know what's lurking in the food we eat!

| I'm not sure if you have an actual Ben & Jerry's store where you live, but their sorbets are dairy (and egg) free. Baskin Robbins also has milk free sorbets (not the sherbet, it contains milk), although they are seasonal so you would have to check with the individual location. | |||

| I'm a vegetarian, not a vegan, but do know that the cows that provide milk often have poor living conditions and are mistreated, while their calves are given up to the slaughter house to be served up as veal so that they don't take their mother's milk.
As for bees, believe it or not, they can be mistreated as well. They don't all just live in someone's backyard peacefully making extra honey for us. There are large bee farms that sometimes poison them, burn their hives with them still inside, use dangerous pesticides, etc. Basically, any time that you harvest from an animal or insect for the masses, there is some mistreatment and even what they consider "collateral" death. Again, I'm not a vegan so hopefully someone else here can give more insight..... |

| Vegetarian | Mcdonalds | Apr 29 2007 18:34 (UTC) |

| thea8 - I'm a vegetarian and agree that even going into McDonald's (yuck!) does only feed money into their pockets, but from the standpoint of having 4 very active kids and more than a full-time job, fast food is unfortunately a staple for many of us that simply don't have time to even make it home before sports practice and games (we have it every night of the week, sometimes 4 a day with 4 sons!), much less time to cook. I love to cook and do it as much as possible, but time constraints are a big reason that we rely on places like mcdonald's (which I personally disliked even before I was a veg, and now the thought makes me sick!). But unless there are fast food chains out there that cater to vegans and vegetarians only, it's inevitable for some of us to rely on fast food chains when the occassion rises. Although I try to avoid McD's as much as possible, me stepping foot into Taco Bell, Wendy's, BK, Chick-fil-a, etc. is just as bad as the rest, I guess a necessary evil for some of us. I do sometimes prepare meals ahead of time, but we only have so many hours in a day and somedays it's almost impossible to get it all done. But as I've heard others post, whatever we can do personally in the fight against animal cruelty and saving our environment is a step in the right direction. I have one child that became a vegetarian with me and it makes me feel good that him and I are doing our part, even when we have to make the choice to support a fast food restaurant, really any non-veg restaurant for that matter! Good point that you make, it's just not so easy for some of us. | |||

| @ marconi685 - no way we'll accept that apology BECAUSE THERE'S NO NEED FOR YOU TO! You came into a VEGETARIAN forum and said that you love cute, sweet, smart pigs! No harm in that so please! That spiraled into something for nothing! You're very sweet for apologizing when you're the one that should be apologized to. You rock for sticking up for animals that can't speak up for themselves!
@flamel - Yay! I stopped meat completely 9 days ago too! Red meat a few months ago, but gave up EVERYTHING last week when I really found out about factory farming! And as for the Bloody Mary...what about just a spicy V-8 with some tabasco or tomato juice with the same and some celery salt and pepper? Should have the same effect without the anchovies? Peace y'all! I'm happy I've found this forum, it's been very helpful and inspirational! |
