Weight Loss I saw my ex recently and... Aug 22 2007

I've been happily married for 11 years and when I see my high school boyfriend -- that dumped me right before our senior prom -- when we're both home visiting our folks, you better believe I want to look good. hahaha I don't care if it's immature, it's human! ;) My hubby even knows this and will make me love him all the more by giving my tush a little pat or my shoulder a little squeeze in front of the ex and acting all cute with the kids and saying things to them like, "Be nice with Mr. X now, kids, he doesn't have any of his own so don't scare him." I feel about 12 getting all excited about the burn, LOL, but you know, it's harmless. If it motivates you, use it! :)

Trap, a few questions about your 1-year-old... are you nursing her? Does she nap during the day? Where does she sleep? How do you get her to go to sleep at bedtime?

No judgements -- 2 out of 3 of my kids were sleeping nightmares -- I just need more info to help you out. :)

Welcome to Claudia.

Rachel, don't let frustration cause you to punish yourself through your body. Undereating is just as unhealthy as overeating and just another form of letting food control your life.

Olivia, I'm crossing my fingers on the bridesmaid's dress needing alterations, to fit your smaller self that is. :)

Kris and vcooper -- you both have such great attitudes.

Sarah, good luck with your longer walks.

srogers75 -- Hooray for the scale!

As for me, I'm walking with my foot in agony. Probably not smart but I am so frustrated. I really hoped to see some progress this summer and I feel like I'm stuck and it's really making me feel like I might just give up...

I was out of town so I'm posting for the week late. From August 11th until August 17th, we only logged 2 "encounters." Sorry Get 'Em Up and Go Team... I promise we're going to pick up the pace at our house. ;)

Hello, everyone. I'm back from vacation. I haven't weighed myself yet, but I'm thinking I should have maintained or even lost weight. We ate very sensibly -- tons of fresh fruit -- and I spent the week chasing the kids and my nieces and nephew around the beach, swimming, walking and bike riding. We had a glorious time!

Mom -- I hope that your back is feeling better.

Welcome Tempest and Sarah!

Olivia -- I hope your first week back to school was a good one! My hubby is a teacher and he starts on Monday -- 4th grade. So do my kids. My oldest daughter is going into 3rd grade and my son is starting kindergarten. Good thing I still have a 2-year-old at home or I might feel a little weepy. As it is, I may have a little back to school celebration for the moms at my house after pick-up! ;) LOL

Wendy -- Isn't it great to FEEL the changes in your body. I love the satisfaction of feeling the muscles in my legs and watching the extra fat melt off especially around my knees and at the tops of my thighs near my tush. I have a definite behind now instead of a blob sliding down my legs toward my feet! hahaha

Rachel -- I'm sorry you're having a tough time. Just start a new day. You can't undo any days that have past so put them behind you and look forward.

Kris -- Woo hoo and your 57 minutes!

So, now, my bad news. My foot is killing me again. I go back to the doctor on Friday. At the moment, I am wearing drug store orthotic inserts but the doc suspected that my high arches would require the prescription kind, custom made for my foot. They are about $300 so I was hoping to avoid them, but I have to walk so we'll have to come up with the cash. Riding my bike is fun, but not the same as walking for me.

We celebrated our anniversary last night with a delicious, romantic dinner. I didn't go crazy with the eating, but I didn't count calories, either. Sometimes you just have to live! We so seldom spend such extended time over an adult meal, just enjoying each other's company and the atmosphere and the smells and flavors of the food and wine... the whole night was delicious.

We're off on vacation. See you next Saturday!

Hey, get em up and go team, I'm leaving for the beach on Sunday until at least Friday, maybe longer. The kids all bunk in the basement and we'll be on the second floor in a bedroom looking out over Lake Michigan so I'll rack up lots of encounters while I am gone. ;)

Now go make your partners (or yourself) happy!

LOL -- I know spirochete loves here weight training! I'm surprised she didn't pick up on this now that you mention it.

I don't have much of a reply now... I have to mull over what you've said. You have answered my question, though, so thanks!

Thanks, Olivia, I woke up this morning with LESS stiffness in my foot and no pain, so I think my new orthotics and the 3 week break worked. =)

So, I completely agree with Kris that walking is good therapy!

Rachel, walking is NOT going to give you huge muscles in your legs. It will define and tone your legs, but you will not get a bulky, weight-lifter look from walking alone. Make sure to stretch before and after walking so your muscles are long and lean and sexy. If you do any sort of strength-training for your legs, you could back off of that and just count on the walks to tone your legs... but if you have small legs, a little muscle definition is only going to make them more shapely and even sexier. ;)

Happy walking, all! I'm leaving for the beach for a week tomorrow. I'm looking forward to those long walks down the shoreline in the evening and the invigorating walks past all of the beautiful beach homes in the morning with my sister-in-law. We love gawking at real estate. LOL

I DID IT! I walked in the beastly heat and humidity with the big kids trailing me on bikes and my little one and one I babysit in the jog stroller and all went... well, I don't know. My foot doesn't usually hurt right after I walk, it's the next morning that is awful. So far, so good, though and in general my foot has been much better so here's hoping! It was just nice to be out there burning off some of my mommy aggression. =)

Just wanted to add that I love all your pictures. I don't know why but every time I try to upload some I get an error. Could it be because I have a MAC?

Hi all, it's our anniversary today -- 11 years. We've been together for nearly 16, though. Yikes! We're old. LOL
Doing really well on my water intake, really badly on my caloric intake. I don't know where my head is this week, but it's not in the game. :( I really need to figure this out and get back on track.

Have fun in your new house, Olivia.

vcooper -- Congrats on the extra mile and the great time in adding it!

Of course, 30 minutes of exercise is worth it! No, it won't burn as many calories as 60 minutes, but it sures burns more than 30 minutes of watching TV! Do what you can, do what feels good to you, carry weights or don't, do in the morning or the evening or in the middle of the day -- do it consistantly and voila! you're someone who works out! That is AMAZING!!!

TGIF!

Thanks for the well wishes, it sounds funny, but I'm a little nervous. If my foot starts hurting again I'm going to have to pick some other form of exercise like cycling or swimming and frankly, neither thrills me. We have a treadmill so I can walk morning, noon or night inside or out and I really appreciate that versatility with my kids to chase after... LOL Hmm... maybe I'm a wogger after all. ;)

cmama -- My kids are one day short of 3 years apart and 3 years 4 months apart. That is what worked best for us. We didn't start trying until the 2nd birthday of the previous child and to me that allowed each kid enough of a chance to be the baby. Also, I have suffered with complications in each of my pregnancies and I needed a chance to recover physcially and emotionally from each. That said, it's really a personal decision and a lot depends on your child's or children's personality, not to mention your own. My oldest could have handled a new sibling at 2. My middle child was barely ready at nearly 3 1/2. My youngest is almost there, for her, I think a new brother or sister could be accepted at about 2 1/2 -- although we have no plans for more. My nieces and nephews are all about 2 years apart (4 kids, 2 families) and I can see the advantages of that, too, especially now that they are school aged, though one sister-in-law swears that is why she never had more kids and the other doesn't plan on number 3 until her youngest is 4 or 5.

I am doing so well with my water today! I bought a Rubbermaid 32 oz. water bottle with a lid and straw and I'm already halfway through my 2nd bottle of water. I don't know why this is making it so much easier to get all my water, but somehow it is, so I thought I'd share.

southfork -- you are awesome! =) I love the image of everyone walking across the Brooklyn Bridge. I still can't get my head around the tornado in that location. Wow!

vcooper -- I am a (transplanted) Clevelander, too. My husband has been landscaping (he owns a small business) in all this rain! He was nearly washed off the Shoreway in his truck with trailer attached earlier this week. Scary!

Tomorrow is the big day, my first walk in 3 weeks. Can't wait to get back out there.

I'm from Ohio.

I am most looking forward to getting dressed based on my mood and/or the weather and/or the occasion rather than the horrible process of figuring out what fits the best, if the right shirt of pants to go with it are clean and covering what they need too, etc. I really miss my cute clothes and the luxury of just getting dressed in the morning without agonizing over the process!

We have a big family wedding October 6 and I'd like to lose at least 10, pounds by then. It's 8 weeks away.

OK, another question. I'm not exactly performing an intensive weight training session. I just want some weight resistance to help tone my muscles. I use 5 and 8 pound hand weights to do:

lunge w/lateral raise, lunge w/bicep curls, squats w/overhead press, standing hamstring curl, rear raises, standing curls, arm arc,

then without weights:

side kicks, seated leg lifts, donkey kicks, crunches, abdominal twisters, bent-leg v-sit, dips, push-ups

I usually alternate days between the upper and lower body exercises. So am I really using up all my glycogen or does that only affect those who are really weight lifting as opposed to strength training?

Just wanted to add, that I have noticed that when I stick to my healthy diet in my calorie allotment I actually feel less hungry than when I am mindlessly adding extra calories to my diet. Drinking enough water really adds to my feelings of satiety, too. Now if I could just combat my boredom eating after dinner...

My goal was 86/87 ounces and I got about 72 ounces both days. I noticed a half pound loss this morning even though I weighed after breakfast and binged on dessert last night. I'm thinking I need to keep drinking the water and flush the sodium and such from my system. ;)

Welcome new mommmies!

Olivia, thanks for the tip about the weights before and after cardio debate. What you said makes sense to me. I'm only use 5 and 8 pound weights for my at home circuit and I don't feel too fatigued after my walk to use proper form. I also appreciate the warm-up of the walk.

Tanji, find a stretching routine that works for you and then do it before and after each workout, additionally stretch every morning upon waking. This has made a world of difference in my aches and pains!

To all of you morning walkers who got out in the heat and humidity -- congratulations. You are an inspiration.

Thank you!

I know that the yoga won't burn fat or calories (well, not many) but I'm supposed to avoid overusing my foot and really add a lot of stretching to try to keep it limber... I think the yoga meets both of those requirements.

I have heard people say do weights first, then cardio but I never knew why. I appreciate the information.

My happy relationship...

Met as sexy, attractive, 18-year-olds filled with all the energy and passion of college freshman.

Today we are 34-year-olds with 3 kids, a mortgage, debt, two jobs for him, babysitting out of our home for me, but we're still sexy, attractive and filled with energy and passion for each other. It doesn't matter if the rest of the world doesn't see it.

For my birthday in June, my husband presented me with a list of 10 things he loves about me. My favorite was number 7 because only someone that loves you would even think this was special. It may not sound like much but to me, that is love.

#7: Your walk. I can spot you so easily in a crowd by the way you walk.
