Recipes How can I make a lighter version of this recipe? Feb 18 2009

Splenda makes a lower calorie version of brown sugar.  All the other suggestions sound really good, but when changing any recipe be sure to substitute one product at a time so you can see what change occurs with each one.  If you use them all at the same time and it doest taste good you are likely not to change anything.

Hope it comes out ok.

PS...I have never heard of quinoa...what is it , what is it used for and in place of and does it make a recipe lower carb?

Good luck on your recipe.  Let us know how it comes out.

Could you please explain to me what is hummus and what does it taste like.  I am supposed to be following a very strict diet due to a varitey of health conditions (low carb, low fat, low sugar, low salt and low calorie)  The carbs are the most important due to recent diagnosis of diabetes type 2.

I have the same problem as the rest of those responding, and I have herd of hummus before, but noone has ever explained it to me and I am a chicken to try things without a bit of information about them...lolEmbarassed

I was diagnosed 3 months ago and have taken the Levathyroxin in increasing doses until I reached 75 mcg.  I am still very tired but I also have Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome...so I guess that figures.  I was diagnosed with Type II diabetes 6 months ago and take 2 meds for it, but my sugar levels don't stablixe and I crave sugar.

Is there anyone out there that can tell me how to control the sugars and how to maintain the prescribed 1200 calorie diabetic, low sodium and low fat, cholestrol diet?  I am having no weight loss and I am gettin weaker and in more pain each day.  It would be nice to be able to walk  2 blocks to the store.

I have heart problems and arterial problems as well.  Anyone suggestions out there?  Anyone please???

Noone likes  having to see the doctor, but from the sound of it that should be your next move.  I agree with your mom and hubby that you are pushing it too hard.  When you are in a flare with Ulcerative Colitis the added stress of just exercising can make it worse.  You should be resting when you aren't working and giving your body a chance to heal itself.  Have you tried using fiber and eating yogurt?  Ask your doctor about those things.

I had severe episodes of diarrhea much as you are describing.  It was bad enough that I had to use adult diapers especially at night.  I had a Upper GI and a colonoscopy done and the docs suggested I use fiber 3 times a day.  It has helped more than I thought possible.  But as I said...you need to see your doctor and talk with him, as well as ask about using fiber and alternative methods to correct the problem.

I sure am too.  I baked my first cheesecake today.  All my sons are gone from home and my husband will be gone with his buddies drinking beer at the river.  So I will relax and watch tv for Mother's Day and I will eat a piece of the cheesecake.  I must be very careful because of being diabetic now, but a small piece won't hurt.Innocent

I am short as many of you are.  I used to be 5'4" but am currently 4'11"...Osteoporosis got me.  I quit smoking and gained 75 #'s and was up to my all time high of 239.  I am currently 205 with the help of cc and the couple of groups I joined.

I was diagnosed as Diabetic on Monday and so that will help with my weight loss.  I really want to keep my legs and my eyesight so I will try as hard as possible to keep my diet intact.

we can do this ladies, all we must do is try and to be there for each other and pray.

Just thought to leave a little message for all.  I haven't been real active, or really committed to this diet in the last few months and I do need to get back on track and be honest.  I haven't gained any more back, but I haven't lost either.  I have been very busy since June with vacations and the grandkids, but now is the time to put my mind in the game and get this done.

I was just told that I am Diabetic (or shoing signs and lab results of the disease).  I need to really get serious and see what happens.  I gained 75 pounds when I quit smoking and now is time to get rid of it.  I am disabled and can't do much excercise, but I will work diligently to get the wight off and keep it off.

Thanks for letting me join you and I hope the motivation of having others know how uncontrolled I have been will help me do what is necessary to get healthy.

Not losing, but not gaining either.  Vacation this year has been very hard on this old body.  Now I get some bad news from the doctor and could use prayers...Looks like I my be Diabetic, (but it might just be because of the weight) and they found 4 spots in my breasts (again more testing).

They are doing some special blood tests and will frequently repeat them for the next 3 months.  I need a 1200 Cal. Diabetic Exchange list.  Anyone have one I could get?  PM me and let me know.   One good thing though my cholestrol went from 358 to 156...I have only been taking my medicine for it for 3 weeks (my insurance company wouldn't let me have it for the last 5 months...and only God knows why.  They finally gave in since the doctor wrote it for the generic...lol).

I have been reading the comments on several topics her and everyone is so upbeat and working so hard.  God bless all of you.

Hi Laura...I did weigh between 145-170 from age 15, until May 2006, when I quit smoking (age 57) and I jumped up to 239...

I like you have high blood presure and several health problems besides.  I am currently down to 201...thanks to calorie-count.. GREAT SITE.

I will say that counting calories is important, but more than that it is portion control.  Watch on your packaging ...check calories, but also what is the serving size?  Exercise is important if you can do it.  I can't due to my bones and joints, but I am still losing.  Just a lot slower than most of you will lose the weight.  I have to be patient and depend on God to get me through each day.

I discovered that portion control has decreased my use of Protonix, or Zantac, Prilosec, Maalox, and Nexium.  I have taken one or more of these everyday for 120 years to keep the heartburn and GERD away.  My uncontrolled blood pressure is finally showing readings of 150/100 (my normal was 170/120)It is coming down slowly too.

So keep up the good work and if you need to talk write to me...IM or PM or right here.  Sometimes I don't get in here as often as I like, but you can reach me otherways.  Talk again soon...I hope

I get my water in everyday...8/8oz.   glasses or bottles.  I drink at least 3 glasses of Orange, sugar free drink from WalMart (same as Crystal Light, except 3-4 dollars cheaper).  Hubby even drinks it...likes the taste.

I have been drinking herbal green tea, or Chamollile before bed.

Weight loss is at a stand still, but I am getting the water in...staying away from Caffine (not that I drank much of it a day anyway), Have started getting in the pool; when the water temp is up to 83+ (to passify my arthritis) and I am eating much lower fat products...veggies bites and burgers are great...lol

Trying hard ladies.  Just slow.  Still 208.  And I am going on vacation.  I hope I can still at least not gain any more.

It is very good to breathe. I will be getting excersie in.  My son is taking us camping, and to 6 Flags, as well to The World of Coke, and the Atlanta Underground...maybe he should rent me a wheelchair...lol

Talk to youin' all again soon.

I haven't been thinking about points coco...I have gained 2#, over the binging last week...holiday and just being deprssed.  I have been having much pain and unable to move at all...So maybe it wi better to take me out of it for now.  Maybe next month when I can get into the pool...

At least then I would have some activity that would be worth trying to work through this.

I am glad everyone is doing such a good job.

Talk again.
Keep it up all.

I think I have been here a while back...I am 58 years old, 4'11" and nnow weigh 210 ( have had a very bad week of binging and gained 2#).  I have a lot of health issues and must get the weight off.  You know you are in deep trouble when a doctor tells you he won't treat you anymore because you are FAT.  (This wasn't my primary..it was the pain specialist my primary sent me to...)  So now I have no choice but to treat myself with OTC meds, and try my best to lose weight...but no I would never return to that creep anyway.  I just hope that the OTC meds don't interfere with my necessary prescription meds.

There now I am done complaining.

I am glad to see that so many are here and are doing well.  It is good to have a group to give the support you need when we get depressed and feel like giving up.  I am glad to see that so many are moving forward, and that everyone has support.

I am not sure how this works here.  Do you pair up with someone so you can talk and exchange information, or do you just keep adding onto this thread.

Well hope to talk to some of you again...and good luck.

I haven't been doing great this week but I have been better...I lost another pound anyway.  Went to the store this morning and bought the things I need to keep me from binging.  I realized that if I have to measure stuff, I usually eat more than I should.  I should be able to do better starting today.  I just need to be sure and log in my foods.

I can't do the challenges yet.  I am almost to the corner of the block.  I walked the store today and I haven't been able to do that in 4 or 5 months.  I didn't have to use the electric cart.  So the total of 38 (I was 239 in Jan. then 220 at the end of March when I found cc.) pouinds is having an effect on me I supposed.  I really have to keep an eye on things.

The best thing of eating portions is I can quit taking the medication for GERD every day.  Now I ony need it occasionally.    Now that is the best.

I was a 37 year 2-3 pack a day smoker and tomorrow is my 1 year anniversary of quitting.  I am still having the allergy symptoms that all of you mentioned, but it is better than when I was smoking.  Sn yes as a nurse I knew better, but kept smoking anyway and pretty near destroyed my health.

I feel as though I have never had any withdrawal symptoms, but I am sure I did.  My worst was the gaining of the weight...but my body isn[t going to win.  I will stay smoke free and just visit with all of you frequently to stay on course and get the weight off.  Come on ladies...it can be done.

I have been having a hard time over the last week...Frustrated and health is acting up.  Just not a very happy camper lately, and taking it out on my body.  I haven't gained any weight back, but instead of losing 4 pounds in 2 weeks, I only lost 1.  I will try to get back on track starting today.

I found if I really come to the site and post/log my intake...I am more likely to remain on my schedule, because I am more aware of what is going into my mouth.

Trying again ladies.
Makes me question if I should have ever quit smoking.
1 year yesterday of no smoking, but I did gain over 50 pounds that first 9 months..Dang!!!!

My first time here ladies...I can admit to you I am a binger.  Now that I think back I guess I always have been.  I am short (4"11') due to osteoporosis.  Yes I am older than 98% of youin's, but I need help and movitation too.  Accountability is probably what I need most.

I have many health problems and HAVE to get weight off...not just the 10 pounds I lost last month, but at least that much for the next year.

Yes I can admit also I am just plain FAT now.  I quit drinking (5 years ago...I was on my way after drinking daily for 20 years...to being an alcoholic), and smoking (it is a year May 9th)...but I started eating chocolate...big solid bars...everyday.

And I went from my steady normal of 170 (yes I was fat then too), to 239#...

My pain doctor refuses to work with me anymore and told me to bad if I am in constant pain...lose weight and it will ease.  (The chronic and constant pain are related to injuries of my back, as well as Fibromyalgia, and several diseases related to bones, muscles, and age)

My primary only wants another doctor to take responsibility for my chronic pain meds...so I am  out of luck in anything.

I found this site and , now I found you ladies.  I will try to do anythng I can to stop my binge eating.  My meals are good...my calories recorded and I do well a few days a week, and then I sabatoge myself for a few days eating anything I can find,  and start over.  My hubsand has to have cakes and cookies in the house always for his lunch and after he gets home from the bar...he craves sweets.

I will come here and tell you about how it goes and intervals ...I hope everyone does well the rest of the week.

All of my grandparents have gone to be with the Lord, when I was little.  So I never had them around for advice or hugs, or to give me all those lovely treats...but I would hope if I had  that they would have encouraged me in my fight to lose weight.

I have been overweight since age 13, and I am trying now to change it because of my health.  Honey...visit your grandma, and remember she would rather have you healthy than anything else.  If she tries to get you to eat (that's something all grandmas do I think)  tell her how important she is an how you are trying to get  your weight off...she will understand.  (grandma's are like that too...I know from personal experience).

Have fun being with her...you will cherish it in years to come.

I know exactly where your mom is coming from...it has to do with the guilt of the disease... When you have a good day you think you have to do it all, because tomorrow might not be as good.

I have been talking to my grandson and he goes to the YMCA everyday to work out.  They have a water aerobic class for the elderly, and I hope to get into it this fall.

I too have several of the same disease processes your mom has.  I have been working diligently to lose this weight.  I believe it will make me feel better, but I still cheat a little bit...staying under my calorie points each day...Oh well...it has to get a bit better.

Though I have never had your problem, but I go the other way...I' m fat and I know it...but that isn't why I decided to answer.  You have touched my heart and I was just a little bit concerned.  I thought to see how you are doing and just keeping the communication lines open to you.

Have you tried more milk?  What about bananas?  I know that I can only have 1/3 of one, but I sure bet if you ate a whole one it would be real good for you.  Not only would it give you an added boost of potassium, (that your cells need to be healthy) but it would add calories that will help your struggle for weight gain too.  Elvis used to eat peanut butter and banana sandwiches...grilled at that!!!.  Now even if you only ate 1/2 of one now; then the other before bed..it would help.

I will keep you in my prayers for your peace, and for strength to get through this phase of your ED.  Keep in touch sweetie.

One of the worst times I had was when I realized I can't walk through the large department stores anymore.  The pain in my legs and back prevents doing so, and I am reduced to using the motorized cart/buggy.  Because of the joint and muscle strength decrease I can't move the regular wheelchair...so I have to use the motor ones.  I just never expected to have to do that.

I try now to go to the smaller stores to shop...so I cna get throught them.

As far a excerise...I have to use stairs for personal care so that has to count, and my housework..it's all I have in the winter.  I do use the swimming pool in the summer if the water temp is over 83 F.

I am hoping to get to the point where I can walk around the block everyday after I get about 20 pounds off this frame...

Good luck girls.  What do you use for excerise when you can't get to do the conventional?

Height: 4'11" (I was 5'4", but Osteoporosis got me, and a few other bone/joint/muscle diseases).

Age 58

Current weight: 216 (as of today)

Goal weight  I would be happy with 140 ...the idiot doc says 110.

Highest was 239 about 6 weeks ago.

Lowest ever weight was 132 (and that followed a 2 year struggle with IBS back in 1982.  My normal has always been around 150-160

Now I have many health problems and I am unable to exercise, but I am going try walking to the end of the block.  I think anything is better than nothing.

Hun...people just don't think.  My hubby knows I am on this diet and have been doing pretty well.  Not perfect..but ok.  He knows my health is suffering from my weight and this morning he got mad at me because he always makes breakfast for me on the weekends...and I wouldn't eat the deep fried potatoe pancakes he was determined to make.

That just made it bad for the rest of the day...He came home from the par with 2 dozen wings, bar-b-qued.  Then had another mad.

I don't know why he does this...but when people offer you things even after they are aware you are trying so very hard to lose weight...your telling them " NO THANK YOU" and them getting upset with you, is their problem not yours.

Just hang in there..and remember that it is important for you to tell those you are close to that you are dieting.  It will help them you give you the extra support that we can't.

Keep on keeping on...you will win.
