Fitness Anyone do cario for 1 hr many days a week??? Feb 27 2009

I am 50 years old and do cardio 5 times a week, from 24 minutes to 70 minutes. I run when the weather permits and walk on the treadmill when it doesn't.

I occasionally have minor knee pain, which my doctor tells me is to be expected at my age. As long as it is only occasional (a few times a month) then he told me not to worry.

My recommendation to you is get running shoes. Good ones. And replace them when they start to wear. I have gone through a pair of Nike runnng shoes (worked well for my feet/stride), Avia (which I endured for 4 months before tossing in the trash) and Adidas (current shoes, working great for me) in two years. If you have had your New Balance a year, and put in an hour almost every day, they probably need to be replaced. Find a pair that works for you, and change.

I have a good friend who uses an elliptical for his cardio, 12 minutes 4 times a week (mostly he does weights). His knees hurt a lot too, and he tells me he cannot understand why my knees don't hurt all the time with all the running I do.

My recommendation is to get off the equipment every chance you get and run/walk outside, but break into it slowly, sidewalks are really hard on the knees until you build yourself up.

Fitness Jogging and Heart Rate Dec 01 2008

Actually, I would work on increasing the slope first. You will get a much better workout on a treadmill by keeping the speed where you are, and increasing the slope by 1% per week for 5 weeks, and then 1 % per 2 weeks for 6 weeks, and then 1% when you can, for the last 2 points to 10% slope. Keep doing this until you can do the entire workout at 4.5 to 5 mph and 10 % slope. Then begin working on increasing the speed a bit at a time.

Safety wise, I really hate going faster than 5mph on a treadmill, if you cannot get your heartrate to your target at 5mph and 10%slope, you probably need to consider an elliptical or outdoor running.

Last night at our Mended Hearts meeting, this very question came up! The rehab nurse doing the presentation said definitely eat after exercise, as this is much easier on your heart. She also said you would not become winded as easily, as your diaphragm would not be fighting against any mass in your stomach from eating.

There is a guy called Jeff Galloway who has a website with articles he has done for Runners World. He has a couple of articles there on how to pick out the right shoes for you.

Basically, you need to go and shop for shoes which are suited to you. It may take a while, but you should be able to find a brand/style which works for you.

That is close enough to use. One cooked cup is about 200 calories. Unless you are obsessive about exact calorie counts, that is what I would use.

Started at 233, joined CC at 227, took 8 months to get to 190, have been at 190 for 8 months, and plan to stay at 190.

More than satisfied with CC. I am no longer counting calories (I go back to losing weight when I start counting), but I do watch my portion sizes and continue to exercise daily.

All the Walmart treadmills are by the same supplier, just some are better than others. I bougth the "Gold's Gym" one for around $500, it has various programs, a heart rate monitor which is so-so, inclines to 10 percent, has a nice wide belt and a good long stride area, been using it for about a year now and it is holding up fine.
Weight Loss Advice:Smokers/Former Smokers Jul 24 2008

Well, I quit smoking in December 2006. Weight shot up by 15 or so pounds, despite the fact I had started working out and walking. I hit 233 in Feb. 2007 and started on a diet. Decided portion control was the best way, and found calorie count shortly after.

I now weigh 190ish, and am maitaining with no problem. Had to quit counting calories to stop losing weight, but try to stay aware of how much I eat (PORTION control, once you get used to eating smaller amounts, you find it is actually enough).

Anyway, the rewards are many. I look better, feel better, am healthier, and feel better about myself.

I had smoked almost 30 years, and ENJOYED it dammit, if I can quit, anyone can quit.

I have ran one 10K this year, going to run an 8 K this month, and a 10K next month, and plan to do a half-marathon in Nashville next year.

What seems to work best for me is to jog OUT 2.5 miles. Then, when I get really tired, I know I am going to have to cover the remaining distance one way or another, so I might as well keep jogging.

First, cardio is a lot more important than resistance training. If you only have time for one, do the cardio. It will keep you healthy, which is the first consideration. Sure wish I had never stopped.

It will also keep you in fair shape. Despite what you might hear, running uses a lot of muscles, and will keep you in reasonable shape. It even helps with abs believe it or not.

If you want to look like a model, then you need resistance training. Those 8 pack abs come at a price. Those nicely defined arm and back muscles require resistance. No way out.

But if you just want to be slim, then diet and cardio will be just fine. As long as calories in is less than calories burned, you will lose weight.

I do cardio 6 days a week. Three days a week I add resistance training (I am 50 yrs. old, and have to do resistance just to keep my muscle mass). I intake between 3000 and 3500 calories a day and maintain on that.

Anyway, just my two cents worth.
Weight Loss Burn Meter??? Jul 11 2008

Not sure what your "burn meter" is, but I suspect that your normal burn during waking hours is subtraced from the 315, so lets say you burned 315 in 1.5 hours, you would normally have burned 115 anyway, so you netted 200 from normal activity?

Just a possibility.

ROFL. Anyone taking advice on eating habits from Ol Fat Ass needs to wonder why he is desparately looking for someone to blame his problems on. Supersize Me, like the rest of his so called documentaries, is full of misinformation. His credibility is totally shot.

I eat at McDonald's 2 or 3 times a month. Love Big Macs, and they have the best fries around.

If you eat at McDonalds and eat 4000 calories a day, you are gonna be fat.

If you don't eat at McDonalds and eat 4000 calories a day, you are gonna be fat.

Now, McDonalds is not exactly the healthiest place to eat, nor is Subway, but both are ok in moderation, and as long as they fit into your menu.

Sorry, but I completely disagree. It is exactly a matter of personal responsibility (except in a very small percentage of actual eating disorder cases).

SOCIETY didn't sit down and consistently eat a few thousand calories too many and fail to exercise.

And I see no civic responsibility to look beyond myself (and my children). We are each responsible for our own actions or lack thereof, and YOUR eating habits and YOUR exercise habits are not my responsibility (and none of my business).

As far as restaurants, that is a matter of economics. Trust me, if there is money to be made in healthy restaurant chains, there are enough people interested in making money to make it happen. But what will be built is what will make money. Period. No one is going to invest money in a losing business. (they may DONATE money to a cause, and may even try to invest responsibly, but if that Rain Forest Preservation mutual fund consistently loses money, don't expect people to run to invest in it. Not gonna happen.)

If you ate nothing but celery and fruit your sodium intake was probably less than 200mg. What you saw was probably water loss only.

As far as weight, a calorie is a calorie. But healthy calories will provide required nutrients for a lot fewer calories than say nacho cheese Doritos and the like.

Good Shoes.

Good PRE and POST stretching.

Keeping your legs warm. Cold weather aggravates the condition.

Do not use them until they fall apart. When you get serious wear on the soles toss them and get new ones, your feet need the support. I have found they usually last more like 1000 miles, but that will vary quite a bit from person to person.

Hmm, some of the old school stuff I listen to:

ZZ Top, Queen, Lynnard Skynnard, CCR, Stones, Blondie, Meatloaf all have 130 to 140 BPM songs that are great for running and Total Gym so should be OK for lifting.

Weight Loss too much sodium? Dec 04 2007

I am a heart patient. My goal is to remain under 4000. I do pretty well at that. But there is no way to stay under 2500 and eat 2500 to 3000 calories, unless you prepare everything from scratch, which is somewhat impractical when you and your wife both work.

If you are on less calories, it is barely possible, but still difficult.

Anyway, my doctors tell me 4000 is fine, especially with the amount of exercise they have me on, sweating goes through sodium faster you would believe.

Plan on burning 3000 plus per day in basic.

After that it will depend on what you are doing, where you are assigned, how much PT your unit does, how much training you do on your own.
