Have done well this summer. We've worked at the woods so much that I'm probably in the best shape I've been in years and have kept my weight at about 143. I'd like to lose another five pounds. We're eating lots of vegetables from our "garden" and other people in the neighborhood who have given us stuff. The sweet corn has been wonderful this summer, and our tomatoes and sweet peppers have been prolific. I turn 64 in a few weeks but feel younger in terms of strength. Any other "old things" who are trying to eat more mindfully? lkm |

5-20-09 Doing well. Yesterday worked hard with my husband clearing brush and saplings from our woods-bought-on-a whim. No time to overeat. Slept like a brick last night. Will walk or ride my exercise bike today. lkm |

Hi. Gene and I have done well eating-and-exercise-wise this winter...losing a few pounds and keeping fairly fit for a couple of old things. Gene walks anywhere he needs to go here in town, and I've been riding my exercise bike almost daily. We're doing well. I agree with you about keeping hands busy. I've been knitting up a storm...so I guess I don't need a scarf. We bought a five-acre woods about five miles away. We've been working there some days, clearing brush and cutting down nasty old thorn trees. Too cold lately though: the temperature here this morning was a minus 17! We hope to have family get-togethers there summers...a sort of retreat, a place to walk in good weather. Good to hear from you. Linda |

Hi, old things! Anybody there? We've been walking each evening or riding our bikes down to the retirement home to see Gene's mother. We both feel better when we move. And we've been eating lots of home-grown tomatoes, green peppers, and zucchini (not bad at all steamed with onions, peppers, and a bit of olive oil). Linda |

Judy...and any other old things out there: Hi. I've had a couple pretty good days and have been eating more mindfully, also walking quite a lot, and enjoying tomatoes and green peppers from our little "garden." After many years of planting major gardens when we lived in the country, now we just have our asparagus in the spring and our peppers and tomatoes later in the summer. People have been giving us zucchini and yellow squash which we have been sauteing with onions and peppers. Pretty tasty and nutritious with just a bit of olive oil to keep them from sticking. Gene's 64th birthday was yesterday. We had a gift card to Red Lobster and both got grilled fish in luncheon-sized portions. Tasty and good for us too. Any other old things out there? lkm |

| Hi, Judy. Glad to see you back. I did very well with my weight through 2007 while I was teaching school (long story...my school was desperate last fall...couldn't find an English/Spanish teacher...so I stepped in again for a semester), but as soon as I got back home I began to pick up again. Not bad, only about 5 pounds, but I can tell a big difference in the way I feel and the way clothes fit. What works best for me is to increase the level of exercise. I'm getting there...but, darn, it's hard. I do enjoy walking and riding my bike though, and have an exercise bike for when the weather is bad. It's a resistance bike with handles that move back and forth as I peddle...so...a better workout. I agree with you about the possibility of the problem being hormonal. I have continued with HRT, the smallest dose, half a tablet per day. My nurse practitioner and I both feel that for me the benefits outweight the negatives. I'd be interested in hearing more about the book you have. My husband and I are trying to cut down meat/fat intake and step up on the vegetables, whole grains, and fruit. He's lost several pounds and is riding his bike and walking. We live in a small town where that's easy to do. Again, good to hear from you. I'll try to check here more often too. Linda |

| Have had a good couple of days...mindful eating and quite a bit of exercise. I like simply walking best. My small town is easy to walk in: safe, lots to look at, lots of different routes, etc. A lovely way to spend a half hour. We went to our favorite Chinese place yesterday. The Mongolian barbeque (why do they call it barbeque, I wonder) where you fill a bowl with what you want to stir fry is a great way to eat a variety of vegetables with a small amount of meat...very filling, very healthy, and very low-fat. And very tasty too! Anyway, I'm "doin' good" for the time being. How are the rest of you? Linda | |||

| Good morning, all. Hoping that you are being more "mindful" of your eating than I have been the past few days. About two weeks ago, I announced to my husband that we needed to choose our restaurants more carefully in terms of menu choices and the likelihood of overdoing at some restaurants more than at others. So...my first thought was to avoid the Mexican restaurants because I can't seem to avoid the giant baskets of tortilla chips. Somehow it has worked out that we've ended up at Mexican places four times since then...mostly because the people we've been with suggested them. Arrrrgh! And, no, I didn't avoid the baskets of tortilla chips, and the people we were with last night treated us to giant bowls of fried ice cream. Anyway, Happy Cinco de Mayo. Linda | |||

| I've just been reading several of your profiles...so that now I'm
totally confused on who is who and where from and and and... But
I really enjoyed the feeling that we are to a great extent kindred
spirits...that we have had or still have careers, that we want to be
healthy, that we would like to avoid any medication we can, that we
enjoy being older, that we are really a group of "old things" that I'd
like to meet in person if that were possible! I expect there'd be
a lot of laughter and a lot of like experiences. I'm impressed! Linda |

| Rose, I'm with you on the allure of the clearance sign! If you
could all see my yarn stash, you would first of all be appalled!
(How can she live long enough to knit all that!) But most of it
comes from the call of the clearance sign. I'll see some gorgeous
stuff at a great price and think that I can't leave it behind.
So...I rescue it and add it to the stash. It's all in one closet,
so at least I do have some limits! Pretty big closet though! Linda |

| Hi, old things. I'm pleased to see that our number is growing. Welcome, Chris. My husband and I are anglophiles and hope for a return trip to the UK soon. We visited England, Wales, and Scotland for a couple of weeks in the summer of 2000. We loved it and do want to get back. The walking there was wonderful! It's my favorite exercise here too. I also think that the stress of working can help pack on the pounds. I was never able to lose weight and keep it off until I retired. Dora, welcome to the group. I too was a teacher until retiring in 2004. I thought I would miss it terribly, and there are days, but for the most part I love the freedom to read and write and knit to my heart's content. Wow, that's neat that several here enjoy needlework. I wish we could meet and get out our hooks and needles and knit and crochet up a storm. At least when I'm knitting, I'm not eating! Linda |

| Sylvia Louise and Rose (Southwind7): Welcome to the group. I was away from the computer for several days and didn't catch your posts for a time. After a couple days away from the scales (because I don't really want to know what might show up there), I really need to get back on track. We went on a little adventure (that's what we call impromptu car trips to who knows where around here) yesterday, to see where a building site for a new ethanol plant is planned, about 100 miles from here. We had lunch in a little mom-and-pop place (quite good) and hunted for a store that had Indiana maple syrup (not to be found even in the town that has a maple syrup festival every Feb/March). We just happened on a yarn/knitting supply store, where I spent a very pleasant half hour fondling the yarn and checking out clearance items! Came away with a marked down magazine, a circular needle, and only one ball of yarn. Anyway, we are glad that you have joined us and hope that you can help motivate the group to eat sensibly (how's that for pushing my own responsibility off on someone else! Perhaps if I had a live-in cook and a personal trainer, I could actually shove the responsibility for my eating onto someone else!) lkm | |||

| Welcome, Dellrosie. When I was first working on my weight two
years ago, I aimed for a pound or two a week, and I weighed myself
every day. It worked. I found that being retired
helped: I wasn't under as much stress and didn't have the
late-afternoon feelings of feeding frenzy that I did while I was
working. Lately though, I've not done well and picked up three or
four pounds. I'm really mad at myself for getting off the
track. That's the reason I came here...to find some back
up! We are at least eating more wisely, though sometimes too
much. I'm trying to cook from scratch much more than I had
been. I think, though, that exercise is the real key. And
I'm not as consistent with that as I should be. Aiming for a long
walk today. Again, welcome to this little thread of old things! Mary Alice, well, I agree that making scarves is a good way to learn new stitches, but I guess I've just made too many for gifts and for the church bazaar the past few years. A few years ago I overdid it with hats in the same way and have only made a few since then. Now I'm on a sweater kick. Two years ago it was a poncho kick. I made seven for granddaughters and nieces. Knitting is a great hobby. -- "Good on you" for breaking one of those weight barriers. That's always been a good motivation for me to slip into the next lower ten-pound level. When will the contractors start at your house? A good weekend to all here. lkm |

Good morning, all. I'm not doing too well on the weight this
week. Up a pound. We did do some walking yesterday, but too
much is going into my mouth impulsively, like the two Kashi cookies
mid-afternoon. At 130 calories each (despite the high fiber from
nuts and seeds), they are too much for my daily intake. Sigh... Today is my little needlework group at the local retirement home, a ten-minute walk from my house. I'm in the middle of two projects, a sweater for me and a baby sweater for the church bazaar next fall. Neither is a good project for the group because they both take a good bit of concentration in counting rows and increases and decreases. So...I need to come up with another mindless project (but not another scarf...dull dull dull) for the hour the group meets each week. A good day to all. Linda |

| Good luck on the remodeling. We had a major remodel at our farm
house in 1980. It took about five months and we were nearly crazy
by the time it was finished. My washer and dryer were in a room
in the barn so that I could do clothes, but carrying the clothes
baskets back and forth between house and
barn...was...interesting! We had our house reroofed last summer,
changing from a light color which showed the dreadful black mildew to a
heathery grey-black-white...much better looking. Good luck on
your remodel. We often go to a little Chinese restaurant for Sunday lunch. If we choose only the Mongolian stirfry where we pick almost totally vegetables and some shrimp, we are filled up with very little fat, salt, or calories, and it's delicious. Last Sunday I was good and didn't go to the buffet for my usual one piece of sweet and sour chicken or the little two-bite custard tart. I did miss these two high-calorie morsels though! Have a good day. Linda |

| Hello, old things. I haven't been near the bike, the scales, or this website for days. I'm holding my own on weight as of this morning and have had some good exercise each day, but that's it. We try to walk most everywhere we go in our little town. My son is on WeightWatchers and he helps a bit keeping us in line too. Our problem lately has been too much eating out. We do make the best choices we can at the restaurants we visit, but...the salt, fat, and calories are more than we need. Time for the needed kick in the pants to get back in line. Linda | |||

| Good morning, "old things." (I used to mind it when my son called us that, but I've grown rather fond of the nickname as it fits me better all the time!) I'd like to get down to about 140 (145 now, 170 two years ago), eat in a more healthy fashion (fewer processed foods, more meals from scratch, more grains, fruits, and vegetables), and exercise more. I guess I feel the need for someone with a whip (or at least a sharp tongue) to stand behind me for motivation! lkm | |||

| I guess I had just read enough posts here by "kids" who seemed to have the interests of gnats and the sense of fence posts and by "adults" who seemed most interested in wallowing in the illness of the week. When I began working on weight loss two years ago, we had sort of a family buddy system going, in that several of us were trying to eat more sanely. I guess I was seeking a buddy or two here to help me be accountable. I haven't really picked up much of the lost weight, but I could feel myself slipping back into old habits. Anyway, welcome to a thread for "old things" (as my son delights in calling us). Linda from Indiana | |||

| I would agree with most who have posted here: 1200 calories is about as low as you should go. The weight WILL begin to come off if you exercise faithfully and eat sensibly (healthy protein, whole grains, plenty of fruit and vegetables). Give it time. It took me six months to lose 24 pounds, and there were several plateaus along the way, but the weight has stayed off because I'm eating healthy now and still exercising. It's got to be a change of life style in terms of eating, a life style you can stick with, not a foolish fad diet that may work at first but isn't for life. lkm | |||
