| Fitness | Confused: Can you build muscle and lose weight at the same time? | May 13 2009 20:13 (UTC) |

But if you go from sedentary to active while on your weight loss journey, then shouldn't the muscles that you are using grow and get harder? I've been walking up to 5 miles per day while losing 130 pounds. My legs are like rocks. It seems I should be able to do the same thing for my upper body if I consistently work those muscles too. |

If the student in question is still in your area of responsibility, you either should break off the relationship or ask to be transferred to another floor. If it has become a sexual relationship, you should back off in any case. Don't risk making a life-changing mistake while you are still in school. |

| Weight Loss | If in better shape does calories burn decrease? | May 07 2009 20:27 (UTC) |

It's not completely offset, but it does help. Your basil metabolism will go up because lean tissue uses more energy than fat tissue. The main reason you are not burning as much from exercise is that you are not dragging around the extra weight. Either increase the intensity and/or length of your workout, or wear a back pack. :) |

Walking! It's low impact and very effective if you are consistant. For upper body work, bring along two water bottles, one in each hand, and swing your arms. That adds 50% to the calorie burn. If it feels too easy after a week, walk faster and carry bigger bottles. |

Others have given you good instructions on how to use the tools of this excellent site to figure your calories in and calories out. I just want to briefly debunk the "just losing water" idea. While rapid weight loss lasting a few days could be water, I stayed on a 1000-1200 calorie per day diet for 9 months. I lost anywhere from 1 to 9 pounds per week, averaging 3.5 over the whole time. The variation was due to occasional cheating, special events involving food and fighting through plateaus. I went from 360 pounds to 220 pounds. There is NO WAY that the 140 pounds I lost was all water. I lost a person worth of fat. I used this site to track everything, food, activity, and weight. Yes, I was hungry. Yes, I excercised. And yes, I was still healthy. My blood pressure returned to normal, my cholesterol moved to the normal range and my doctor quit bugging me to be tested for diabetes. I went from barely being able to walk for 5 minutes to walking 6 miles every evening and 10 miles on the weekends. I had more energy than my 17 year-old sons! |

| Weight Loss | I'm frightened... | Jun 23 2008 17:59 (UTC) |

I'm in a similar situation. I've been the fat kid/fat old guy all my life. Now, I've lost 130 pounds and the adjustment to my new self has made me slow down and stop. I'm just now getting going on the last 70 pounds. Here is my biggest advice/warning. Beware of your feelings about the opposite sex. You will start to get attention that you are not used to. Take it easy! Don't "fall in love" with the first woman that pays attention to you. Losing significant weight is a life changing event, just like getting married, getting divorced or a death in the family. Give yourself time to adjust to your new world before making any serious life decisions. I didn't follow the above advice and I've had a confusing and sometimes painful few months. I'm dealing with the mess that I made of my life and now I'm ready to lose the rest of the weight. There really should be support group for people who recently lost weight. |

Don't replenish all in one day. Remember that the calories are expended over several days, you don't make new blood and plasma that fast. |

According to our local Red Cross, a blood donation is equivalent to 650 calories and a plasma donation is 470 calories. I assume that is spread out over a week or so, the calories your body will expend to replace the missing blood/plasma. |

The first weeks are always the most weight loss. Your body has not started to fight back yet. The more overweight you are at the beginning the more you lose the first week. My BMI was 61, so I was really overweight. I lost 11 pounds the first week, 8 pounds the second, then it stayed about 3 pounds on average the rest of the time. |

We rented a time-share apartment. Ask your extended familiy and friends if they have a time share that they are not using this year. You can just pay a transfer fee and stay at a nice resort for under $200 for a week. Once you get a place with a kitchen, go grocery shopping. Have both breakfast and dinner at "home" to save a ton of money. Either bring a water bottle or buy ONE when you get to the park. If you look around, there are water fountains, so you can refill the bottle all day. Drink BEFORE you get thirsty. You will need it. Once you notice that you're thirsty, it's too late; you are dehydrated. Declare a diet vacation! Hopefully by now, you've done some hard work losing the weight. Give yourself a week off. Yes I know, you will gain some. But your body will respond to the extra calories with tons of extra energy and a euphoric feeling. It's the happiest place on earth, give yourself permission to just be happy that week and climb back on the diet afterwards. I just took my boys there last summer. It was the dream vacation of a lifetime. see the slide show on my other page: http://myspace.com/crgrier |

| Weight Loss | I'm eating between 1200 - 1400 cals day but people freak and say i dont eat enough. | Aug 06 2007 18:10 (UTC) |

Thanks for all the advice and encouragment. To answer nnylyma's question, yes, I have a long way to go. I started at 360 and I need to get to 160, that's 200 pounds total. I was influanced over the weekend to "eat healthy food" and "that extra veggie sandwich can't hurt". In addition, it's been around 100 degrees (f) every day so I have not been doing much walking. I've gained 4 pounds in 3 days. And, no, it's not water. Everytime I slip like this, it gets harder to go back to what was working before. I've got to be tough and try to be perfect from now to Thursday (my "official" weigh-in day) so I won't show my first gain for a week. |

I've got the same problem. I shoot for 1000 calories per day, knowing that I will usually cheat a little and really hit 1200 - 1500. ALL my friends freak out when I tell them my plan. Everyone thinks I'm going to die! I started 12/10/2006 and as of 08/02/2008 I've lost 124 pounds! This is working for me. Whenever I let someone convince me to increase the calories up to a "safe and reasonable" level, I either don't lose or gain a little. So, how do you convince people that you don't have an eating disorder while you're dieting. |

| I started drinking 2 cans per day, one in the morning and one just before working out in the evening. I like the Berry flavor best. I don't think it burn calories by itself, but my workouts seem to be more effective when I drink a can first. I'm losing more than if I didn't have it. It's only 5 calories per can, that's less than a cup of coffee, so I don't see how it hurts anything. Green tea is supposed to be a natural appetite suppressant too. |

| I still don't know if the claim of negative calories is true, but I lose more weight when I have a couple of cans each day. It costs about $6 for a 6 pack at Dillions (Kroger). |

I've tried the reccomended way and it just dosen't work for me. According to the calculator on this site, I should consume 2650 calories per day to lose weight. That's bogus. When I tried that I gained about 3 pounds per week. I've been consuming between 800 and 1200 colories per day to lose about 4 pounds per week. I know it is recommended to lose 1-2 pounds per week, but I know from past experience that I will get discouraged and give up doing that. Especially because that is an average, so you will gain some weeks and lose other weeks. I can't stand the 2 steps forward 1 step back way of losing weight. This way is working for me. I've lost 68 pounds in just over 5 months. **edit: UPDATE :** Some time has passed and I'm doing great. The pattern has been consistant. Whenever I let someone convince me to diet the "healthy way", I gain weight. When I stick to my own system, with the help of the database here, I lose weight. Now to be fair, my system has "cheating" built in. I shoot for 1000 calories per day, but most days I don't get that low and ocassionally I don't get that high. I've had busy days where I only ate 500 and depressed days where I ate 1800. I'd guess I average in the 1100 to 1200 range. The secret seems to be to ignore yesterday and treat every day as a new diet day. No getting discouraged or sitting on laurals, yesterday is over and today is what counts. I just got back from Disney World and a "diet vacation" where I ate whatever I wanted for a week. I knew I would gain but it was my goal to lose at least 110 pounds before the trip and this was my reward for achieving it. I felt like I had been in training for the Dad Olympics. I only gained 9 pounds last week and it is coming off again fairly quickly. Bottom line, I lost 130 pounds in 8 months and I feel great! From all the walking and jogging, my legs are like rocks. Once the Disney bills are paid off, I'm going to start a Y membership and work the upper body too. Goal weight, here I come! |
