I really need a lot of diversity in my life - short attention span is definitely a problem for me.  Several times during the year I find myself getting in a rut and lose my zest; every body has different things that help them to recharge, but for me I generally start by taking a block of time (preferably a whole day, but in your case that might be difficult) and just do something by myself - ALONE!!!!!  As a parent with a job, three kids, and unending overcommitments I find that just stopping the whirlwhind helps me to refocus.

During that "Me" day I wing it, and do what I feel like doing.  The alone time seems to not only reenergize me, but helps me to slow down long enough to listen to my inner self and figure out what I am missing.  While refocusing I (more often than not) think of something that sounds like fun as far as a change in my routine, and that is step 2!  Even something as simple as buying a new book to read, or a new picture/photo book (even better for me!) for visual ideas, or a decadent magazine and  a good-smelling candle or body spray can perk me up!  Also, I'm a sucker for a good kitchen gadget once in a while.

If you can't completely take a mini-vacation, maybe you could try just making a change to your exercise routine.  Sometimes when you get in a rut it is a sign from your body that different muscles need attention.  If you normally run or lift weights, try a dance class or video - or even a sport!  This year I took up softball for the first time since I was in middle school, and I can't believe how much fun I am having!

If nothing works and you are still feeling down, you might want to talk to a doctor to make sure the problem isn't physical, or that you aren't becoming depressed.  That can sneak up on you sometimes!

If you want to talk more, just add me to you friends list and keep in touch.

I'm not a professional, strictly a dabbler, but I find any time I am tired or run down I have this problem.  Probably a dumb question with the toddlers, but are you getting enough sleep?  Also, have you tried upping your B -12 intake (or taking a sublingual supplement)?

One more point on the Tofu shirataki - after I rinse them I find I  need to pat them dry with a paper towel.  Also, they are definitely better (less rubbery) if you cook them a little...I got turned on to them by Hungry Girl, and I think I've become addicted!  :)

How about a stir fry?  If you search recipes under sam's stir fry I have a recipe out there - just substitute chicken for whatever protein I used last.  It is one of my son's favorites!  It would be fine to dice up the sweet potatoes and throw them in, or just saute them thin sliced on the side with some orange juice, ginger, and pepper.

I swear - are we talking about my sister?!

But seriously, as much as she drove me crazy wanting me to be her coach and "diet police", keeping her inspired over the last year has benefitted me too.  I just have to make sure that when she makes excuses I call her on it; I also put the responsibility in her lap if she tries to cancel - I tell her fine, but I'm going anyway.

As far as calling her every time I'm doing something - no freakin' way.  I have a pretty set schedule, and she can either come along or not.  I only call if I'm changing that set schedule.  Same way with eating.  If she asks a question, I'll answer it, but I'm dieting my way.  If she eats at my house she eats healthy...but what she does in the interim is her responsibility.

Just by the way, I have lost 45 - 50 pounds in the last year and gone from a size 12 to a size 4, more than meeting my goal.  She has gone from a size 18 to a 12 - so we have bote benefitted!

I am SO PROUD of you...both for making your goal and for having the sense to set achievable goals.  Keep going with that walking - you'll be up to 30 minutes before you know it.  In the meantime, you have a perfect reason to do a Happy Dance and yell "Woo-hoo"!!!!!

You can do it!  I turned 40 last July, and over the last year and 1/2 I lost almost 50 pounds...I started at 175ish in August of 2006 with WW,  and lost about 10 pounds.  In March of 2007 I found out I had to have a total hysterectomy, and the doctor put me on a really strict diet.  that, this site, and exercise helped me drop the rest.

I would love to be your "buddy", if you want...just let me know!  :)

Pregnancy & Parenting Embarrassed about Weight Mar 13 2008

Wow...that is a tough one.  I truly don't think I could have recovered from my ED struggles if I didn't  confide in my husband.  I think everyone needs at least one person in their life that they can be totally honest with, and I strongly feel that one person would have to be my spouse.  We have been married over 21 years now, and I don't feel I could have ever made it without honesty.

Do you really think he would care about how much you weigh?  I would think that would be the lowest-priority concern he would have about your pregnancy.  You have enough stress during this time without trying to conceal such a trivial matter; sharing the pregnancy experience is an opportunity to enrich your relationship on all levels.  Don't you think getting it off your chest to your one special support person would be a relief?

I am not sure what the name of the muscle is...it is in my upper front thigh, and seems to cross from near my hip flexor to my inner upper thigh - but about two inches down from my groin.  It definitely has something to do with lifting and bending my leg - putting pressure/supporting my weight is not a problem, but getting into bed, my car, a chair, etc. is difficult since I have to use my hands to lift my leg up.  I am surprised at how heavy my leg is!  :)

Two questions - when you say compression, do you mean like an ACE bandage?  And how light of exercise? Just slow walking, or is the normal brisk 45 minute trek okay?  It actually hurts just sitting at my desk, so I am not sure I will be able to tell if I overdo it.

Foods Weird healthy bread? Mar 04 2008

Another plus for Ezekiel bread, it has a lower impact on blood sugar levels.  That is really a good thing if you have hypoglycemia like I do!  Even though the calorie count is a little higher it is more nutritious because it doesn't contain any flour and is loaded with good stuff, including protein - so you get more bang for your caloric buck.  You can also get the sprouted grain bagels and muffins.  If you have trouble finding it look in the freezer section, since it doesn't keep as well on the shelf - at home I store it in the fridge.  And I have no problem at all with my family "stealing" it - they would never pass up their squishy white bread for my yummy, chewy Ezekiel bread, 'cause it just looks too healthy!

I agree.  I have a recipe on here (sam's healthy granola bars) that tastes an awful lot like the Nature Valley ones; they are easy to make and taste good.  I wrap them individually and freeze them, then grab one in the morning and it is thawed and yummy by afternoon snack time!  You don't have to freeze them, I just do so they last a while...

Motivation When to exercise? Jan 11 2008
18:09 (UTC)

If mornings are not convenient, there are ways to exercise at home that don't require much space or equipment.  Just getting started helps.  Search the workout center on this site for ideas...they even give you pictures of what the exercises look like!  Or get a kids exercise video and do it WITH the kids...a little activity is good for them too!  Weekends are also available, don't forget.  If you can't do more than 30 minutes on week days, throw in a longer workout on your days off.  Every little bit helps!

One step to help you change is to change your mindset to feel like an active person rather than a sedentary person.  Increase your activity at work...take several trips to the mail room rather than just one, go physically talk to people in the office rather than sending email, park farther from the store ON PURPOSE to walk a little, take the stairs when you can...every little thing adds up.

tangerines/oranges, bananas, apples, pria or fiber one bars, light and fit yogurt, baby carrots, celery, grape tomatoes, laughing cow wedges...during the day

night time: I thaw frozen strawberries, blueberries, or blackberries and top them with a little light and fit yogurt, some sugar free syrup (either chocolate or maple), and some Cool Whip free for a psuedo-sundae.  Or I "splurge" with a pack of 100 calorie Orville Redenbacher 94% fat-free popcorn.  sometimes, if I'm still hungry at bed time, I indulge in a handful of mixed dried fruit, and I always have a cup of warm caffeine free fruit tea before bed.  If my calcium is low for the day I may substitute with a warm cup of milk sweetened with some sugar-free flavored syrup, like they use in the coffee bars...my favorites are raspberry and gingerbread flavored, but chocolate is always good too!

Health & Support Blood Sugar Levels - Hypoglycemia Dec 26 2007

This problem runs in my family as well; I, my daughter, and my son all have it.  After being on a strict diet earlier this year I quit getting the normal hunger signals...and since the diet didn't allow simple carbs, my sugar started crashing unexpectedly even though I was eating every few hours.  I had to add some whole grains back into my diet.  By adding back the whole grains and some occasional ezekiel bread I eventually got back to "normal"...which means I eat small meals every few hours.  I personally think my system got out of whack because my body fat dropped pretty dramatically, and thus I didn't have any more reserves to draw on.

Health & Support Deflating scars? Dec 04 2007

I don't have scars per se, but I have noticed this phenomenon with my stretch marks on my lower abdomen (from pregnancy).  They used to look angry and red and wide, now they are just sort of deflated and floppy looking.  I do think they are getting better gradually (my weight loss was pretty sudden), especially since I am moisturizing the heck out of everything to try and tighten up my skin. My ob/gyn told me the only sure-fire cure would be a tummy tuck, and after the hysterectomy earlier this year I can't imagine EVER going in for unnecessary surgery - so I think I'll just live with my "racing stripes"!

Health & Support Low blood pressure????? Nov 29 2007

I, like ukeness217, have a family history of high blood pressure but also a personal history of low blood pressure; I think the trend over time is more important than the actual number.

If yours appears to be getting lower than your norm (as a trend), it may indicate a problem.  They also worry about it if you are recovering from surgery as it could indicate internal bleeding.  If it is your norm though, and your doc isn't worried, I wouldn't be either.  My norm is the 90/50 range.  If I ever get up in the "normal" range it means I am ill, stressed out, or having some sort of serious problem.

Things that tend to plague those with low blood pressure, according to my doc, are headaches, spots and lightheadedness if you stand up too suddenly, cold extremities, and a higher tendency for strokes since your blood can tend to sit still and pool longer.  Exercising on a regular basis really helps all of these things.

Foods healthier ways to make a rue/thicken sauces?? Nov 28 2007
16:37 (UTC)
For simple thickening I agree that any of these solutions will work.  For recipes really requiring a good roux though, like gumbo, the roux adds flavor and color as well as just acting as a thickening agent.  The best cutback I've been able to find in that case is the wheat flour with olive oil, and even that is not perfect. If you do choose that method, just remember that the color it turns will be slightly more brown and less red than with white flour, and be aware that it goes from perfect to overdone quickly - and nothing smells worse than a burnt roux!

Candy corn is my weakness too.  I have not been able to find sugar free, but I did find that those little individual packs for tricker treaters only have 50 calories...so that is my once in a while treat, and the limited portion helps to keep me from going overboard!
The Lounge Help? Oct 02 2007

Do you enter your exercise every day?  If so, you don't include it when picking your level.  For example, My work is pretty sedentary, so that is what I picked even though I exercise more than 30 minutes every other day.  Then I just enter my exercise on the days I do it.

If you don't want to do that, I guess you could take the minutes you exercise all week and average it over the week, then pick the level that fits.  Using that example, I would figure 160 minutes a week (40 minutes 4x per week) and then divide by 7 days, so I figure about 23 minutes per day.
