glamglam and jpoage, you guys are right that uni would give me lots more opportunities. but pumpkin314, your husband's story is sort of exactly what I'm fearing. You're so right about education inflation and tenacity being more important. That's just how I feel! Three years of life is a long time, especially when you're young like me, and the idea of expending it on education and ending up in a job that I could have gotten without it terrifies me, especially if I didn't enjoy my experience at uni. I could look for a smaller college ... but like I said before, if the classes aren't benefitting me, what would it matter where I undertake them? I'm almost thinking I should just try to penetrate the force field, so to speak, as I stand, and forget about essays on Shakespeare.

cassrd05 and discoqueenx3, I'm so glad there are other people who feel like me!

gadzooks and particle_woman and cflim16, you guys are right though. There are lots of other things I like about myself besides my weight, 116 pounds is just as normal for my height as 115, and life's too short to be tied to a number on a scale. For all the days I'm over my average, there will be another day when I'm under it.

I think I'll try to cut myself a little slack by accepting that my weight will naturally fluctuate by a few pounds from day to day. As long as it's not constantly 5 or 10 pounds over where I want to be, I can still say that I'm successfully maintaining. We'll see how I go!

Thanks guys!! :)

syzhu,

Thank you so much for posting this! I've never liked to drink, and I've always been afraid to admit it because of what people would think. I'm always making up excuses not to go to parties and stuff. From peoples' responses, I feel so much more confident about being able to have a social life!

:)

You're right ... if you want to lose the weight for health reasons, it is upsetting to feel unsupported. Have you made the reasons for your weight loss goal clear to him? My impression is that he thinks you want to lose weight to look better, and he is trying to tell you that he thinks you're beautiful the way you are. Maybe if he understood that you're worried about health, not attraction, he'd change the way he thought. He's surely just worried about your self image!!

I think you're a nice change from all the people who are so obsessed with sex that they will do it absolutely anywhere with absolutely anyone.

I think you should read On Chesil Beach by Ian MacEwan. Your post reminded me of it. Not only do I think it will give you some insight, the writing is fabulous!

As for my opinion, sex should be saved for true love.

Why did you decide to transfer? If your courses really don't match up, wouldn't it be easier to stay in the same place?? I realise it's probably too late now, and that you've probably got your reasons, but you're right, it would be really a pity to pay extra money and spend extra time unless it's totally necessary!

You've got nothing to complain about. I'm going to university on my own, and it's a hell of a lot easier to meet people in high school than after it. I would kill to be in your shoes right now. Sorry if I sound bitter. I'm just having a hard time. Enjoy high school.

My sister. In her world, there aren't four food groups, but two:

1. Breads

2. Junk food

On a typical day, she eats 2-4 slices of toast, waffles or pancakes for breakfast, a handful of chocolate chips or marshmallows in the morning, a few more slices of bread, a chocolate chip granola bar and a handful of crackers for lunch, and snacks of ice-cream, chocolate, marshmallows, crackers, or bread every few hours throughout the afternoon. By dinner time she's so full on bread and junk food that the only thing she can stomach is one more slice of bread. Two hours later, she miraculously grows hungry again, but only for dessert.

And She's so adverse to activity that she actually complains about the walk from the kitchen to the TV.

And yeah, she's stick-thin too. I say, not for long!

I agree with playergirl. Slimquick is stupid. Losing weight the natural way is the only thing to do. Injecting mysterious drugs into your body may make you look thinner, but it won't make you healthier, and in that way, one of the major goals of weight loss is lost.

Just for the record, I went to the doctor, and he prescribed an ultrasound exam. I just got my results back, and it turns out I have ovarian cysts. My doctor said they are benign, and will probably go away on their own, but he wants me to have another ultrasound in about a month to monitor the condition.

I just hope he's right and they don't stick around or get worse! I'm going to try to learn a bit more about them too. I'm just glad it's nothing more serious!!

We should be eating 1600 calories per day + anything burned during exercise in order to maintain our weight. To lose weight, 1200 + anything burned during exercise.

However, I sadly find it really hard to stay below 1800. Often I go as high as 2500! My downfall is afternoons: I am OK in the morning and I NEVER eat at night, but I eat lunch at around 1pm and by 3pm I'm STARVING and usually break down and eat. anyone have any advice? I try to save calories for afternoon snacks by eating smaller meals but that just seems to make me hungrier and I end up eating an even bigger afternoon snack!! It seems I'm doomed to stay at 116 lbs!

My other major problem is BLOATING!! My stomach is HUGE. I've been to the doctor recently to see if there's something wrong with me, but I think it might just be lack of conditioning! I'm going to try to start a fitness routine soon.

Good luck ladies! We need to help each other!

You're just like me! I'm 5'2'' and happily fluctuated between 113-115 lbs until lately, when I mysteriously began to gain. Now I'm sort of bobbing up and down around 115, from about 114 to 117. I desperately want to stay below my line of comfort at 115! My problem is that the only exercise I do is walking, and I'm always hungry so I find it really hard to eat less than 1800 calories per day. I don't know what to do! Maybe we can help each other ...

joyrae, that's so true! I guess that's what bothers me so much: I'm the one who gets stared at with my carrot sticks and fruit, while everyone else bands together with potato chips. It doesn't make sense!!

You guys, thank you all so much. You've given me some great info and insight, and I really appreciate the time you took to respond to my post. I've been comparing my symptoms to your descriptions, and while some of them sound like mine (painful periods, swollen stomach) others I'm unsure about (swollen lymph nodes). I guess the bottom line is that I need to go to the doctor. The consequences could be scary, but you're right, it's always worse not knowing. And looking and feeling gross with a huge stomach. I've made an appointment, so I'll keep you posted!
Health & Support Depression and emotional eating/binging Jun 21 2008

How long have you struggled with depression? Do you know why you feel sad? What changes could you make in your lifestyle to get rid of your depression? These are the questions you should ask yourself before doing anything else, because getting rid of the depression is the most effective way of dealing with it.

That being said, I have been depressed for the last couple of years, and I haven't yet found a way to conquer it, so I know it's much harder than it sounds. I'm working on it, and I hope you do too. In the meantime, there's alot you can do to subdue it. I used to binge-eat almost every day to make myself feel better, but thankfully I've gotten over that now.

These days, my favourite TV show is my main source of relief. Whenever I feel like eating, I'll watch an episode instead, and by the time it's over the desire to binge has passed.

My other strategy is Starbucks. It may sound stupid or something, but often when I'm feeling especially lousy, I'll go to Starbucks, order a drink and a pastry, and sit there for two or three hours with a good book. By the time I leave, I feel much calmer, and although I've added to my daily calories, it's only the amount of one drink and pastry, not nearly the amount of a binge. If you order plain coffee or skinny drinks it's not even that much. One of my favourite Starbucks is about an hour's walk from my house, so I walk there and back, which burns calories too and makes me feel even better.

Short walks are great too, and I also like to visit the park. When I close my eyes and feel the sun on my face, it's hard to feel very sad. Go to see a film, go shopping and buy yourself something nice.

Once I realised that food made me feel worse instead of better and started finding other ways of relief, binge-eating became a relic of the past. Don't worry: you can help yourself.

I hope this helps!
