Foods Good "late night" snacks Aug 08 2009

If I eat around 5 or 6, between 8 and 9 I usually have either some low-fat, low-cal ice cream, or a mini bag of popcorn (100 cals per bag).

If it's super late (midnight or so) I used to have a glass of chocolate milk and it really helped, but I have to stop chocolate and any chocolate products for a while (esophagus problems) so that's out.

Sometimes I have a serving of cereal, with or without milk.

This sounds lazy but, put me down for 50. I haven't walked in a few months and my knees haven't been behaving very well. So I hope I can make it!

That's actually a great motivator!

I don't think I've thought of it that way before, but it's a great way to visualize and FEEL the weight. I'm about 40-something pounds away from my goal, and a few weeks ago I had to carry 40 pounds (a big box of cat litter) and almost hurt my back, imagine carrying that thing around all day, every day.

I finally get what my knees and ankles must feel like. No wonder they're often angry at me!

Health & Support Lexapro (Anxiety)? Jul 31 2009

I took Paxil and didn't like it, so I know where you are coming from.

I took Lexapro, and out of 3 SSRI's I tried, it was the one with the least side-effects. It didn't make me gain weight, it didn't do crazy things to my appetite (others did). And when coming off it, I didn't have any major withdrawal issues and I managed to lower dosages very quickly.

As for it's therapeutic ability, I'd say it was fine. It was probably as effective as Zoloft and more effective than Paxil for me.

Like any SSRI, Lexapro can have side effects and has basically the same side effect profile (lower libido and weight gain being the two that are most complained about) as any other drug in its category, but if you're gonna take an SSRI and are worried about side effects, Lexapro is probably the one to take because it's the "lightest" when it comes to those side effects.

But remember, everyone has completely different reactions to each SSRI (which is why every SSRI  basically does the same thing, but some people can tolerate one better than others), so the only way of really knowing is trying. And considering you took Paxil when you were 16 to 19, your body and brain might (and probably will) react differently to an SSRI now than it did then.

They are super awkward, because what I hear in my head after "You look so thin" is "You were so fat".

However, I am looking forward to the day when I get to see someone's jaw drop after not seeing me in a while.

My shoe size varies a half size (8.5 to 8) depending on weight. I haven't really measured how much weight is between each size.

- Baked apples with cinnamon and brown sugar (I throw some fat free whipped cream on the side for extra yum)

- Some sorbets are pretty good, but they aren't all low-cal

- 100 calorie ice cream sandwiches

Motivation Environmental factors that contributed to your weight gain Jun 23 2009

  • Depression/anxiety
  • My entire family is overweight and eats a lot, and there are a lot of unhealthy snacks at home
  • Hypothyroidism... that isn't much of an enviromental factor, but it contributed at least 7 pounds, and made them harder to lose.
  • Knee problems and knee surgery
  • Unemployment, which meant more time at home and less of an excuse to go out and take walks AND also contributed to my depression.
  • Desk job
  • Last year of college consisted of a total of 3 classes, all within 3 minute walks of each other, so I had no long walks around campus
  • Film production classes, which meant hectic schedules and eating whatever the cast and crew wanted to eat at whichever fast food place was closest to the locations, celebrating with food, ordering pizza and having snacks (doritos and dips and cookies and such) around all day.

Foods foods you just don't count...BAD I KNOW:) Jun 20 2009

Lately I haven't been counting tomato sauce because carrying a refridgerated jar to my computer to log it, and then tag it for future use is sort of a pain, considering it only has 50 cals max (usually more around 30) for the amount I use. I do take it into account and mentally add those 50 cals to what I think I consumed, but I don't bother logging it.

I don't bother logging sugar free gum or diet coke anymore. Sometimes I'll put in my Crystal Light, but not always, since I only consume about 2 cups (10 cals) a day.

- Salads, at least restaurant ones.

- Sorbet. I still eat it, but it has a lot of sugar and cals so I have to take it into account when I'm figuring out my daily menu.

- Smoothies. I always try to make them at home now so I can watch what I put in them.

- Some muffins and cookies (like at Subway, Starbucks, and fast foods)

Tuna nigiri, salmon nigiri, and spicy tuna rolls. I'll also occasionally enjoy some Philladelphia rolls, but it's not my usual. I also like eel, be it in nigiri or rolls. I've also had some mixed salmon/tuna spicy rolls which I really liked.

Weight Loss What is your weigh in day/time/place? Why? May 26 2009

I weigh in when I wake up, in the kitchen/dining room (that's where the scale is), after going to the bathroom. I weigh in every day, because weight fluctuations mean that if I weigh in once a week I might think I didn't lose anything, but may have actually lost a pound or two. So I just weigh in everyday and follow the trend line instead of the actual numbers.

ETA: when I say after going to the bathroom, I mean peeing. My bowel movements are too irregular to depend on them for my weigh-ins.

Weight Loss Anyone calorie cycling/shifting/zig-zagging? May 24 2009

I don't do it on purpose or follow a plan, it just works out that way. I usually shift between 1200 and 1500 cals a day. My meals are also almost never the same size, and can go anywhere from 150 to 650 cals per meal. I just follow my hunger and my taste, allow myself a maintenance day (or two) a week, and go with the flow. I just try to make sure my overall deficit comes out to approximately 3500 a week.

Foods What color is Your banana? May 21 2009

Since I rarely eat plain bananas, I like them yellow with brown spots. I usually use them in smoothies or for oatmeal, so they are best with a bit of mush. They're also much sweeter so I can cut down on the added sweeteners.

Weight Loss cheese-eeek? May 14 2009

I LOVE cheese. I eat AT LEAST 1 oz of cheese a day, I just make sure keep it within my alloted calories.

Most of the time, though, I try to eat Reduced Fat cheese (NOT fat free) made with 2% milk if I'm using it as an ingredient because the flavor difference is not as obvious. If it's a snack, I go for the regular stuff.

Recipes help please May 08 2009
05:03 (UTC)

Yeah, it's volume vs weight, so it depends. A cup of solid rocks isn't going to weight the same as a cup of cotton candy.

In these cases, I just measure the container by itself and then put the food in, measure the entire thing and substract the container weight. I know it sounds like a pain, but after you do it once with one particular substance, it becomes a lot easier to just "eyeball it" the rest of the time. That is how I learned what a servings of cereal, meat, and cheese looked like, by measuring them once by weight.

Weight Loss What have been your experiences with horrible food alternatives? May 06 2009
00:38 (UTC)

I think my worst experience has been fat free cream cheese. It tastes like plastic in cream form. I tried to see if it was an "acquired taste" but after multiple tries, I'll just stick to the regular kind when I do decide to stock cream cheese in my house. I also have issues with fat free margarine and fat free cheese. I like some reduced fat cheeses, but entirely fat free is completely gross to me.

Weight Loss Do you plan to keep this up forever? May 03 2009
14:30 (UTC)
11

I do plan on keeping it up to an extent. I don't have a maintenance plan, but I'm at least 40-50 pounds from my goal weight, so that's irrelevant for now. I think I'll probably go a few days counting and then a few days without counting to see if I'm really estimating portions well, and then see what happens from there. If I have to go back to calorie counting, despite what my family and friends might think, it's actually become easy and natural now, and I don't really mind it.

The exercise part I think I'm ok with too. I don't always exercise and when I do it's walking or the bike or just parking further away from an entrance or doing any other thing that comes natural to me. Plus, I like exercise, I like lowering my anxiety levels and having more energy and feeling stronger and more flexible the way I do after I exercise.

I guess after going on so many diets, I've learned to take it easy and have a plan that I can stick to. I have treats, I eat things I love, I'm rarely hungry (and when I am, I can give myself a few calories without feeling guilty) and I do think I can keep this up without it being a burden.

Health & Support Go and see a doctor! May 01 2009

Original Post by nat1968:

It seems to me, however, that telling someone who has an intense fear of gaining weight to see a doctor is pretty much like telling a person with claustrophobia to take the lift, or someone with insect phobia to handle a cockroach.

I completely disagree. If we're gonna compare it to phobias, it's actually like telling someone whose phobia is getting in the way of their daily activities to go see a therapist. (And trust me, I've been there, saying no to everything because I was afraid of confronting a phobia.)

We're not telling that person to gain weight and see that it's okay to eat, we're telling that person to get professional help.

First of all, indulging a little is fine. You can probably keep it within your maintenance calories if you don't overeat. You can always save some of the cookies and cake for the rest of the week, and then eat them in moderation spaced out throughout the week so that they don't affect your daily allowance. Maybe you don't have to eat all of your delicious birthday treats on your birthday.

Foods Fast food? Apr 18 2009

True, sodium and high saturated fat are huge issues. But if you're out with not much time and feel like having some fries and they are within your calories, I say go ahead. The thing is not to make a daily thing out of it, and not to supersize everything into the largest combo that can fit in a plastic tray.

package 1/2 or 2/3 of your meal before you even start eating.

Does it never strike anyone in the US catering trade that it would be better all round  to just serve smaller 'normal-size' portions rather than enough to feed two? Smile Really hungry customers could order a starter, a dessert and empty the bread-basket.   Less food + less fuel used to cook it + less thrown away + quicker customer turnaround = cheaper prices on the menu.   Plus they'd have customers that can keep coming back well into their old age rather than ending up on defibrilators before they turn 40.    Strange...

Geez, I wish! I think it would definitely make things easier and healthier for everyone. Who came up with putting 2.5 servings or so on a plate for one person?

great ideas; i think I need to at restaurants learn not to clear my plate.  I've always had that problem...eating everything that I'm served.

If you're in the U.S. you have my sympathy.  Restaurants there seem to operate on the mentality that if the diner can still walk at the end of the meal, they haven't had enough to eat.    Can you ask for a child's portion, maybe?  Share with a friend?  Transfer what you don't want into the doggy bag but leave it behind rather than take home congealed leftovers... (brrr)?

Yes, here, when eating out, if you don't feel extremely fatigued and full, you haven't eaten.

Anyhow, other than what's already been suggested, sometimes I bring what's left on the doggy bag and give it to another member of my family. For example, when out for pizza, whatever's left usually goes home with me and I often give it to my sister because she's as much of a pizza freak as I am. I mean, I may bring it home and have it later in the day if the leftovers are from lunch, but if it's late and my calories are done for the day, I just give it to someone else.

Sharing with a friend is ideal, but sometimes you're eating alone, or eating with someone much bigger who can handle more calories, or just eating with someone that doesn't eat what you do. If that's the case, split it in half anyway and share it with someone who isn't necessarily there at the moment, like a roommate or a sibling or whoever you live with. Hey, you can give it to a homeless person or a stray dog.

Many of us can't handle the idea of wasted food, so we clear the plate. But you can always come up with ways to make that food not really be wasted.

Weight Loss Since When did it become so hard to get to 1200 a day? Apr 16 2009

I'm having the same problem! A few weeks ago I was incredibly hungry and couldn't go below 1500 cals a day. I'm only on my third week and I find often find it hard to go over 1200. But I try to. As it's been said, a few nuts, or maybe a low-cal snack like a fruit or a piece of toast will probably help out.

Ok, you say you like chocolate and candy. Have you tried eating smaller portions of it, or do you just binge on it every time you try?

Because I love chocolate and candy and ice cream and sweets and I haven't given up one single thing and I still keep it under 1400 cals a day on most days.

Health & Support anybody else always f-f-freezing? (chatter, chatter...) Apr 01 2009

Original Post by danikat15:

I'm a cold person naturally.  What makes it worse is that  I work with a bunch of menopausal woman who constantly have a window open (even in January).  So I definitely feel your pain.  I've been told by seveal people to get the thyroid tests, but I've been putting them off.  I'm deathly afraid of needles (it's full blown phobia, people... trypanophobic).  Stupid excuse, but what can you do?

A blood test is way cheaper than this other option, BUT, you could get a thyroid ultrasound. When I was first diagnosed they did both the blood test and the ultrasound, and now that I changed doctors we're doing an ultrasound again.

Also, I understand phobias perfectly (trust me, I'm about to begin treatment for a different phobia in two days and I have no idea how I'm going to handle that). Maybe you should consider therapy, because blood tests and injections can be necessary in many medical situations, and maybe the phobia is holding you back from finding out more about your health. I hope that didn't sound too preachy, I've just been in too many situations where my phobia has held me back.

Have you girls that feel cold all the time tried taking your temperature? If you take your temperature daily for a while and it stays below average, it's even more likely that you are anemic or hypothyroid.

Health & Support anybody else always f-f-freezing? (chatter, chatter...) Mar 31 2009

I am not always cold, but I am often colder than the person next to me, which is weird considering I'm live a tropical climate. When I was in college, if I was in a cold classroom and people had one jacket on, I had two and was still shivering and couldn't concentrate. I often have to wear a light jacket inside my house when everyone else is fine in a tshirt.

But I have hypothyroidism and my hemoglobin is on the lower end of the normal range. So for me it's normal, but not for the average person.
