Also, if you are working out, you may be losing fat, but gaining muscle.  and since the same visual amount of muscle weighs heavier than fat, that might be to blame!

I've been working out 3 times a week, diligently. Haven't missed one day.  And my average calorie intake for one day is 1450.  And I have not lost ONE single pound since I started.

It really pissed me off at first, but I KNOW I'm getting healthier so I try not to just live and die by what the scale tells me.  It sucks, but I'm doing everything right so I accept that it has to be muscle and water.

If you are working out, you should try measuring yourself and using that, along with your weight to gauge your success.  You might be surprised that you are losing inches, but not pounds.

To be honest, it's not easy.  If it was easy and there was a way to get in great shape by only working towards it for 15 minutes a day, there wouldn't be anyone overweight in the world.

You have to eat healthy and live an active lifestyle to be in shape.  There is no other way without very expensive plastic surgery.

Have you discussed your diet/exercise plan with your thyroid doctor?  It sounds like that definitely is to blame for your weight gain.

Funny enough, I was just have a conversation with a friend of mine last night about my calves.

He told me I could kill a man with my calves.  I did NOT think that was a compliment, but when I thought about it later, it's true.  I've always had super muscular calves, even when I was more overweight... Now that I work out regularly, I haven't seen them go down in size at all, but they are definitely more firm.

I feel the pain about the boots.  There are a few companies out there that make larger calf area boots though..  I'll look them up and post the names in here in a few minutes

Hmmm... I wonder if your personal trainer has watched one too many episodes of the Biggest Loser and is taking her cues from Kim? (The blonde, often snarky personal trainer for the red team this season.)

I think she has!!!  It's rather annoying because I've always had this thought in my head that a trainer would (should) be kind of a hardass!  And she's so passive.  Granted, I'm still getting my butt kicked, but I don't really need the emotional stuff and annoying banter when I'm sweating!

It took me 3 days of reading (at the office-don't tell the boss!) to get through this entire thread and it was worth EVERY second.

My semi rant for the day...

I've been working out with a personal trainer for just over a month.  She's usually okay but the other day she had my group doing an exercise that I just could NOT do, so I told her so.  She got all insulted and huffy and when we moved on to the next circuit, she came up to me and had a heart to heart with me while I was huffing away doing push-ups!  UM, I'm sorry, I don't want to have a heart to heart with you because I can't perform your moves, especially not when I can barely breath, let a lone TALK because I'm doing push ups!  I want you to push me to improve, not get all emotional because I can't do the move that you so effortlessly can!!!

You know, I am sure that your mom loves you and cares for you and most of all puts her child's best interests above hers. If you explained the situation to her and kindly asked her either not to buy those trigger foods OR to hide them she would understand.

Plus to gain a pound you have to consume about 7000 calories. You consumed 8530 so you only gained a pound! Things are not so bad, see?

not to be a downer or anything, but it's actually 3500 for one pound.

Yeah, since I have to estimate on weekends, sometimes I end up going over a little on one day, but I figure one day out of the week isn't going to kill me since I'm really only eating to maintenance anyways...

Its great to have a little notebook with you at all times, I write down random ideas I have and reminders to myself all the time.  It's pretty handy!

Weight Loss Late night snacking ... any suggestions? Dec 04 2007

You said it.  If it was easy, everyone would be in shape!

I have similar issues with binging at nighttime.  The only way I've been able to stop is by making myself accountable for my actions.  I don't know what will work for you, but just knowing that you are making a mistake is a good step in the right direction.  And realize that it's just that, a mistake!  You aren't going to undo all your hard work just because you had some cookies!  Especially if you are counting them into your diet plan.

One idea I have is to maybe try and shoot for a goal.  Like not snacking one night a week.  And once you accomplish that, you can shoot for no snacking 2 nights a week.  And make sure you reward yourself!  Let your wife know, so she can support you as well!

Another idea along with the eliminating days is to preplan your midnight snack.  If you know you're going to get up and eat, set aside a couple of cookies (or whatever) and that's it.  You only get those 3 cookies for the night.  And count them into your day and you'll be okay.

I log them as I eat throughout the day but at home I don't have internet access so I keep a little notebook with me.  I write down everything I eat and I have a general idea of the calorie count.  Then in the AM when I have internet access again, I log everything in for the previous day.

It's hell on Mondays!  I have a lot of logging then!

Another thing to keep in mind is the Glycemic Index. (I totally butched that spelling, please someone correct me!)  Try pairing a high GI with a low GI and you might be more satisfied.

Often times I will not be satisfied with just an apple, but when I pair it with something like peanut butter, I'm much more satisfied because I'm eating protein with the apple.  Otherwise the apple is just like sugar in my system, it gives me a little bit of a boost and then I'm hungry again!

Actually, that's completely false. 90% of the time when you THINK you're hungry, you are actually thirsty.  The sensors in our body don't really know the difference, especially if you've been feeding yourself everytime you are really thirsty. Google that ****.

And as, nasuoni said, you might want to check with a doctor if your sleep is that interrupted.

Weight Loss I haven't lost weight Dec 04 2007

Measure yourself and track your progress that way.  Weight is really tricky because of all the different things that come into play, like how hydrated you are, whether or not you are on your period and what clothing you are wearing.

If you are going to weigh yourself daily, do it at the same time everyday wearing the same clothes, but make sure that you look at you weight on a weekly basis as an average, not day to day.  For me my weight week will fluctuate between 2-3 pounds up or down.  but when you look at the month, even though day to day I fluctuate I still lose over all.

Weight Loss plus size models? Dec 04 2007

In my obsessive watching of America's Next Top Model, I have learned that in runway/fashion modelling, sizes 00-2 (maybe a 4) are "regular" model sizes.  And size 6-10 are actually "plus size".

This is the modeling industry though, it has nothing to do with how regular and plus size is decided in purchasing clothing.  Generally anything over a 16 is considered plus size in merchandising.

Weight Loss Why do I feel so guilty??..... Dec 04 2007
17:01 (UTC)

First of all, throw your friggin scale out!  Or if you are going to weigh yourself daily, make sure you keep in mind that you can gain or lose a few pounds in just one day because of many reasons, how much water have you drank that day?  What time of day did you weigh yourself?  What were you wearing when you weighed yourself.

I have the same problem.  I weigh myself daily and when it goes up, I beat myself up over it, but I've realized recently that I can't keep doing that!  I just measured myself and I'm going to use my weight as reference, but my measurements are how I'm going to gauge my success!

Seriously though, to gain 2 pounds in a weekend you would have to eat 7000 calories ON TOP of your regular maintenance calories.  Did you?  I really doubt it.

Family-yes.  I talked to my mom about it a lot because she's overweight.  She of course, told me I wasn't fat and I had nothing to worry about, but now that she's seen my sucess, she's super supportive and happy for me.

Friends- yes.  Mainly because they've seen my weight loss but also because I talk about calorie content A LOT.  Probably borderline obsessive.

Co-workers- yes.  They now know the exact calorie count in a krispy kreme donut and just how evil everything at starbucks is.  My boss actually stopped getting the "low fat" options at Starbucks because the nutritional info in nearly identical to the regular stuff haha...   Oh yeah, and beyond just counting, I keep them all apprised of my work out routines and I try and get my secretary to do lunges with me haha

Have you tried chugging water when you wake up to help with the hunger feeling?  Often times it's really that you are thirsty, rather than hungry.

Also, you say your wife keeps snacks around the house for herself.  Is there anyway that she would "hide" them so you can't get to them?

What do you normally crave when you wake up?  sweets or salty?  I'd say get yourself a failsafe snack that you allow yourself, but portion yourself.  At some point you have to MAKE yourself make the right decision and once you do it a few times, it will get easier.

Oh man, this is the best thread!

I'm a big fan of substituting things as well.  I made banana bread this summer and substituted EVERYTHING except for bananas it seems and it turned out sooo good.  Everyone at my office loved it, said it was the best banana bread they'd ever had.  Problem was, I didn't write any of my substitutions down!

So I've tried, oh, 4 different times to make that delicious banana bread again and it hasn't turned out well.  The last time was closer, but not quite there.

Hmm...Melkor - I'm not sure why politics were brought into my requesting information about a Gym, but thanks for your opinion, I guess.

If you are interested in personally funding an incredibly ANTI WOMAN business man with your membership... then yeah I guess it doesn't relate...  If you actually follow the link and read about the guy that owns these clubs and you're okay with that ethically, then go for it.

On another note, everything that I've heard about curves is that it's great in the beginning but most people end up failing/gaining back because the program NEVER changes.  Your body adapts to what you are doing and it's not challenged anymore.

If you are wanting an all woman experience, try finding a personal trainer or go to a private gym.  Most people assume they are a lot more expensive than say, 24 hr fitness, but they're not too bad.

I went to Amsterdam a month into my weight loss mission and couldn't count calories because it was just too damn inconvenient.  I totally thought I would end up gaining weight and I actually came back 2 pounds lighter (a 2 week vaca)

and obviously, amsterdam is the city for munchies!!

I think the reason why it went well was for one I walked everywhere.  ALL day long. Well, you know, when I wasn't sitting in a coffeeshop smoking and drinking tea!  And two- MOST of the food outside America is actually REAL food.  It's not preperpared nasty processed hydrodenated high fructose crap like we are routinely exposed to in the states.

One suggestion, if you have the means, buy groceries and make your own meals some of the time.  The grocery stores are great and the quality of the food is immense.

I think I generally ate whatever I wanted and was fine.  Pastries, Ice Cream, take out, sandwiches etc...

Yeah, I'm starting to think that using the BMI and weight as a measurement of success is a little ridiculous.

I hate the BMI thing.  Even when I get to the goal weight that my DOCTOR has set for me, I'm still considered overweight based on the BMI.  Screw that!  It's so outdated.

If I could afford it, I would do the fancy tests that the do on The Biggest Loser and use those as reference... Until then, I'm still going to monitor my weight but I am going to use my measurements and clothes as a reference to my progress.

My main reason for starting this weight loss/fitness mission was vanity.  But after a month of counting and realize just how unhealthy my habits/day to day life was, it became more of a health thing for me.

I do want to be thinner, but not "skinny".  I guess I want to be leaner.  I want less fat on my body and more muscle.  I do not want to be ripped, just toned.

A couple things I am looking forward to as far as milemarkers of my progress are:

single digit size! (i started at a tight 16, I'm now a regular 12)

no more cankles!  I want ankle to calf definition damnit!

I want to be able to buy a pair of SEXY knee high boots that don't have to be lace-up or special order because my calves are huge.

push up.  I just want to do one REAL push up. (i'm getting close!)
