| Weight Loss | Calories for breakfast | Jul 28 2008 19:09 (UTC) |

| The generic current wisdom is that breakfast should be the biggest meal of the day. That said, I've gone both ways (breakfast being biggest and dinner being biggest) and as long as I eat good food, I lose weight. I will admit, though, that a big breakfast (which I currently do) has helped with my energy levels throughout the day, and I don't have to worry about eating a bunch of peaut butter at night to make up for calories. My breakfast is usually around 500 calories, about a fourth of my daily intake. Hope that helps, even if just a little! |

| The belt thing is me! I still wear the belt I bought at my heaviest (150 lbs ago) and keep punching new holes in it. My office is pretty relaxed and although a couple people have yelled at me to get a new belt, I laugh them off and tell them that until I'm where I need to be, this is my daily reminder of how far I've come. It wraps around almost to my spine now, something like 14 new holes! Yes, it looks terrible, but I've also heard from more than one person that seeing this belt move has inspired them or kept them going! |

| Are you sure you did the math right? I don't think Crystal Light is anywhere near 500 calories per gallon, much less per glass. As for the weight gain, a lot of people experience temporary gains after a tough workout because you retain more water while your muscles rebuild. I can usually count on an extra pound or two the day after a big workout. |

| Weight Loss | Weight training + Cardio for weight loss | Jul 15 2008 15:58 (UTC) |

| A good weight training session can boost your metabolism for an entire day, making it worth as much calorie burning as a long cardio session. Weight training also maintains (or adds to) your muscle mass, which keeps you burning the same number of calories even as you go down in weight. Think of it this way - do you want to lose weight, or do you want to lose fat? If you want to lose fat only, lift weights. |

| Motivation | Goal Jeans? | Jul 14 2008 15:47 (UTC) |

| When I started, I was wearing a 3x shirt (about to break into 4x) and a size 54 pants. After the first 20 pounds lost, I realized I was going to need a lot of new clothes over the next couple years. I started checking sale ads and clearance racks and bought anything that I liked in the 5-10 dollar range, regardless of size. So anything down to X-Large and size 40 pants. It was also nice because I had things I could keep trying on as I lost and my closet became a range of clothes. Over time, my wearable range moved from one side of the closet to the other with new pieces coming in and old pieces going out because they got to be just too big! I never thought I'd wear anything under an XL shirt, but I've had to start buying Larges, and now that I'm wearing all my size 40 pants, I've got my eyes on the pairs of 36s on the far right side of the closet =) So yes, I've bought a lot of goal jeans, and I still get the same feeling of WOOHOOOOO every time a new pair fits! |

| The way I look at it is that the beauty of calorie counting means you don't have to cut yourself off completely from the things you love. For some, that's pizza or a few jelly beans. For others it's a beer or a Jack and Coke. I've lost 149 pounds now and, while I usually make an effort to stay away from it, sometimes alcohol consumption is just one of those things that can make your day. Just don't have so much that you let it break your day. A beer or two once a week won't hurt you. I just remind myself that alcohol is the polar opposite of exercise - while exercise burns calories, stimulates your metabolism and energizes your body, alcohol adds calories, slows your metabolism and wears you out. That makes it a little easier to have just one or two for me =) |

| I couldn't even tell you how much happier I am after weight loss! Sure, I like what I see in the mirror more every day, but just the difference in how I feel every day has been worth it! The meals I eat actually give me energy and keep me going rather than bogging me down. Finishing a brutal workout in the weight room is just about the most satisfying feeling I can imagine. And I didn't even consider this one until very recently - when I told everyone I was changing the way I approached my eating habits and lost that first 10 pounds, people started admitting to me that they had been worried about me and I got all kinds of encouragement. A little over a year later, some of those people didn't recognize me and now I get regular emails asking for diet and workout tips! To know that I've gone from someone who worried my friends to someone they come to for advice on health and fitness feels even better than the first time the scale said 299! |

| I'd be happy with a monitor readout that told me how many calories I had taken in today vs how many I have burnt so far! And if it wants to break down the calories in my macronutrients and their sub-categories, I'd be ok with that too! | |||

| Weight Loss | Calories in alcohol! | Jan 23 2008 19:59 (UTC) |

| Vodka, bourbon, scotch, etc. have 60 calories per ounce. A normal shot is 1.5 ounces and if you're at a bar and order, for example, a bourbon and diet, you will probably get close to two ounces. When I go out, I usually have a couple bourbon and Diet Cokes and then finish up with a Michelob Ultra. I count it as right around 300 calories. If you're out with friends and nurse those three drinks over the course of a few hours (I usually toss in a glass of water in between, but I really like water), you get to be the responsible one who can drive home as well! |

| Weight Loss | male - 6' 2" 295lbs - any one close? | Nov 02 2007 18:46 (UTC) |
|
| 25 years old, 6' even and 297 here. Started on this site and watching my calories back at the beginning of April, when my initial weigh-in was 393. I also have that 250 goal for April 08 (can't wait to feel the difference in that Opening Day seat after a whole year) and 225 over next summer. It's amazing what just paying attention to what you eat and getting some exercise will do. I work for a company that manufactures cookies/crackers/cereal, so I was constantly snacking at work and after I stopped that, I realized I had been adding over a thousand calories a day just from sitting at the computer and eating sandwich cookies! All it took for me to get started was getting on a scale after not taking a look in a couple years and being so pissed when I saw what I had become. When you are angry, willpower just seems to follow! |

| Maintaining | Advice on increasing calories after reaching goal weight | Sep 27 2007 20:45 (UTC) |

| Depending upon how close you are to your goal weight, you might try the 100 calories a month or every two weeks now. That way, you ease into maintenance at the same time you hit your goal. And once the scale keeps telling you the same thing, you know you've accomplished what all of us have been looking forward to for so long! Of course, I understand that you probably want to get to your goal ASAP, and this suggestion would put that off a bit. At least that's how I'd feel. How many calories do you have per day now? |

| Weight Loss | To how many calories do you +300 cut down to ? | Aug 28 2007 16:35 (UTC) |

| I started at 393 and took some very good advice from a few people on these boards - talk to your doctor. Mine told me that I would be fine eating around 2000 a day. I actually started out by trying to develop a couple good habits before really hitting the diet. Mostly making myself eat breakfast every day for a month before my start date. Then, the week before I began, I ate almost nothing but fast food and pizza - all the things I loved most - and never felt worse in my life. And dear God, did I go through some antacid. The day I started, I went with 2000 calories, ate fruit and vegetables and immediately felt better than I had in months. I added exercise shortly after and started changing things up calorie-wise: some days I would go as low as 1800 (if I was taking the day off from exercise) and some days I would go as high as 2500. |

| I don't think she's saying that is all she would eat, just that she could have things like ham and cheese and still be within her calorie limit. As to your question, yes, it does make a difference as far as the nutrients, vitamins, etc. but you will still lose weight if you are eating under your maintenance. But on a side note, things like ham and cheese aren't bad to have on occassion - you've got to eat things you like too! |

| Hello Team 2 Weighed in this morning at 322, which is down 71 lbs from my highest weight of 393 back in April of this year. Big guys can drop it pretty quickly I guess. I was losing between 3-4 lbs a week for a while, but since I started weight training, the weight loss has slowed a bit (but the mirror has been much kinder, which is worth the trade). Over the next 12 weeks, I would like to lose 30 lbs, but the mini goal is going under 300 for the first time in my adult life. I was able to help my team in the last challenge, hopefully I can continue the contribution here! |
