| Vegetarian | How long have you been a vegetarian? WHY? | May 17 2008 02:36 (UTC) |

| I have been on a vegetarian diet for a little more than 3 weeks now. I read the book "Skinny B*tch" - a to-the-point, no holds barred book about healthful eating and losing weight. The author discussed in detail the animal farming practices and slaughter methods, and I cried so hard I almost threw up. I have always had issues with meat, and like others, couldn't think about what I was eating because then I would get sick. After much research, I found that we are so misled by the food industry to believe that we NEED meat, dairy, eggs etc. to be healthy. It's all marketing. All the while people are dying of heart disease, cancer, etc partly because of all the animal products that are consumed. It's been rather easy to change my diet, but the difficult part is coming up with meals that my family will eat- my hubby is a meat and potatoes kind of guy, and my kids are extremely picky. I'm determined not to go back. When I ate meat previously, I was completely naive- I had no clue what I was eating and how bad it truly was for me. Now that I know of the animal cruelty and how those animals suffer all so we can have a Big Mac, I can't just turn a blind eye- I know now so I needed to change the way I live. | |||

| Kim- I am so sorry that you have gone through that! I can't even imagine....So you said that counting calories is what worked for you? I have been counting calories, but not inputting into the program on this site because I don't have that much time to spend on the computer every day. I average about 1400-1500 calories per day. I don't always eat back the calories that I burn by working out though. I am so satisfied with 1400-1500 cals that I can't imagine eating more. | |||

| Thanks cshammas00- I have a medium frame- 5'5" 170 lbs. I want to get down to 140. Everyone else I talked to is telling me that it will just take time for the muscle to increase my metabolism so that I start burning off the fat. It seems like everyone else is dropping pounds left and right and I am struggling to lose a half pound. I am working so hard I just want to see more of a difference to know I am on the right track. | |||

| Starting weight= 173
Current weight= 172 I am going to stick to 1200-1500 calories a day, and continue exercising 6 days a week. I need to remember to take in additional calories on days when I exercise because I think that's why I am not losing as quickly as I should (5 pounds in 2 1/2 months). |

| Weight Loss | Protein Question | Jun 03 2007 23:11 (UTC) |

| According to this site, your daily protein intake should be .8 grams per kilogram of body weight. 1 kilo= 2.25 pounds. So for my weight at 170 pounds, I should reach for a goal of 70 grams of protein per day. The site also mentions that excess grams of protein are either used as calories or stored as FAT. Unless you are bodybuilding, it is not necessary to go above the guidelines. | |||

| Weight Loss | Food scales | May 19 2007 05:46 (UTC) |
|
| I have one of those scales- it's a Salter and I bought it on Cooking.com. For example, you can put any item of food on the scale, put in the code for the food, and then it will tell you how many calories, fiber, protein, sodium, etc is in the food. Plus, it has amazing precision when it comes to weighing just about anything up to 8 lbs or so. | |||

| Weight Loss | can someone explain to me | May 07 2007 02:20 (UTC) |
1 |
| Here's the way I understand it: The 1885 is the number of calories that your body burns on a daily basis to keep itself going (breathing, digestion, circulation) etc. Without doing anything your body automatically burns that many calories. The 1450 is the number of calories that you should eat every day if you want to lose weight. By creating a deficit between the number of calories that your body burns and the number of calories that you eat, you will lose weight. You have to burn 3,500 calories to lose one pound, so you can do the math...
You simply want to eat less than what you burn. If you add exercise to the equation you will lose even more weight. |

| Motivation | If you was to hit your goal weight..... What would be the first thing you wear? | May 06 2007 18:38 (UTC) |

| Hmmmm- I would have to say something definitely slim fitting to show off my fabulous curves- I am so sick of wearing baggy clothes. I would love to wear some hip hugging jeans with a slim fitting top and some high heeled pointed toe boots... | |||

| I don't calculate the exact grams of protein, carbs, fat, etc, because that would drive me absolutely crazy and would lead to one more obsession in my life, so I plan what I am going to eat the next day the night before. I make sure that I am eating protein and carbs at each meal, keeping the saturated fat as low as possible. I usually eat a serving of almonds every day. I drink a lot of water, I would guess about 120 oz per day. | |||
| Weight Loss | drink warm water | May 06 2007 03:18 (UTC) |

| You know, a friend of mine at work is from India, and he says that we should ALWAYS drink and eat warm liquids and foods. He says that it has to do with the acids in your stomach that digest the foods- cold things (things we drink and eat) disrupt the power of the acids to digest our foods. When we drink or eat warm things, the acid levels remain high and more thoroughly digest our foods, contributing to weight loss. He gave me this bit of info when I told him that I am trying to lose weight. Friends of his have lost huge amounts of weight by just drinking/eating warm foods/liquids. I have been wondering whether there is any credit to this theory. It seems contradictory to the theory that you actually burn more calories by drinking cold water. Interesting..... | |||
