Fitness Dogs and running... Aug 28 2007

I would have DEFINITLY confronted the owner on this one. Do you have a leash law in your area? Regardless....did the owner even say anything to you about the bite?!?

I have to say that I agree with reporting the animal. Most biters are repeat occurances...either he's bitten/attacked someone before or he'll do it again. If anything maybe it will convince the owner to leash her dog. I don't agree that this dog needs to be "put down". I blame the owner for this one...the dog should have been in control at all times. If the owner can't do this with her voice/actions then the dog should be physically restrained.

Weight Loss Boobies question Aug 17 2007

Well, I feel your pain. I was a 34J when pregnant and after my second child. I'm now down to a 34GG or H and I also have a broad back/shoulders. One of my favorite T-shirts is the Mossimo at Target. They come in either v-neck (good to break up my broadness, lol) or crew neck and are stretchy enough to show my true waistline and accomodate the girls. They're frequently on sale for $7.99 and come in an array of colors.

I personally HATE minimizer bras...they just push my boobs slightly flatter but make them much wider looking. I also hate regular T-shirts because I look like what's her name on that show Mama's Family...a huge cylinder or cube....might as well be wearing a mu-mu with slippers and silver hair. I've been wanting to try some of the Bravissimo clothes but they're just a bit too pricey for me right now. They cater to big-boobed gals and I've been wearing their bras for years now.

Fitness Blisters from running Aug 15 2007

What type of socks do you use? I used to get blisters a lot when I wore cotton or cotton blend socks but since I've switched to synthetic running socks I have yet to get a blister. I notice that the socks stick to my feet and slide a bit in the shoe instead of sliding against my feet. Huge comfort improvement!

Well, I lowered the darn thing and all is well.

I also like trails and getting outside but with two small children (who have a low tolerance for sitting still in a jogging stroller for more than 5 minutes without constant bickering) it's so much easier and peaceful to exercise on a treadmill at home.

You need to steep the leaves for the proper amt of time and drink it soon after steeping to reap the most benefit. I'll try to find the articles that support this tonight and post a link.

What size are you, if you don't mind me asking. I was a 34J and am now down to a 34GG or H. I don't have a very large band measurement but have pretty big floppers. I've found that unless I get a sports bra tailored to my bra size I have problems. I avoid S, M & L sports bras because an XL might fit in the boob dept but be way too big in band and strap size to give me adequate support.

I've found Goddess, Enell & Panache brands all have serious support bras for larger-chested women. I currently wear a regular bra under a sports bra/tank that is pretty tight. It helps but during certain times of the month I just can't run because the girls are too painful to be jostled. I think I'm going to buy the Panache super-duper ugly sports bra that has an underwire and a zip-up front in a few weeks. It comes in my size, has good reviews concerning support and has wider placed straps so hopefully my shoulders will get some relief.

BTW...any gals out there with bigguns think that it would be SO MUCH EASIER to run without all of the baggage?!? I swear, every time I get into a good run I feel like I'm fighting the girls to get a good breath and actually lift them up from time to time to get relief.
Fitness Riding a Bike Aug 09 2007

Two miles really isn't much on a bike. I agree that you should really aim for 20-30 minutes at the very least to get the best benefit. You should also aim to get your heart rate up so you need to find what speed suits your fitness level.

Biking is great! Your legs will obviously benefit, as well as your heart, lungs and circulatory system.

inci_vinci - The "superior climate control" was a little joke. Didn't you notice the little smilie next to it?

You wanted documentation to support my post. I believe tgpish has supplied you with great points. I'm still trying to find the article that states sweat loss is related to VO2... might of been one of those "pay as you view" medical sites. Here are a few more links...you'll have to scroll down a few of them to get to the topic.

http://www.usatoday.com/weather/resources/bas ics/sweating-cools.htm

A woman's core temperature varies depending on what phase she is in her cycle. We tend to have a bit higher core temp and higher sweat threshold during the post-ovulatory phase and similar core body temps with men/lower sweat threshold during the pre-ovulatory phase. Women also rely on circulatory cooling more than men.

Are you wearing proper shoes...meaning support, cushion, etc.? I used to have really bad shin and ankle pain before I found a pair of running shoes that were good for my wonky gait, lol.
Fitness Do good running shoes really make a difference? Aug 07 2007

Yes, yes, yes! I'm of the same mind-set as you and tried to eek my way down the road of fitness with a cheapo pair of running shoes. When it came time to replace my old shoes I read up a lot on the subject of finding the correct type of running shoe for your foot and running style. So..I coughed up the money and bought a $60 pair of Asics that I researched online (for my running style and foot) and found them on sale in a local store. Let me tell you how GOOD they feel! Or, rather that I don't feel them much at all. They have the right amount of cushion, support and circulation. My feet don't get very hot anymore and my shin splints and foot pains are gone.

Don't forget, though. You need to replace your running shoes when they wear out. I forgot the suggested mileage but don't think, "I paid $100 for these shoes and they're going to last me for years!" When a good pair of shoes wears out they're no better than the cheap kind.

Supposedly....most of it is genetics, gender and your fitness level.

Some people have more sweat glands than others and every body regulates it's temperature differently.

Men tend to sweat more than women...they have more sweat glands. Women tend to sweat less and start sweating at higher temperatures than men....something to do with our superior internal climate control. ; -)

In a lot of people, the more conditioned your body is to exercise and to the environment the quicker you will begin to perspire. Supposedly your body is "conditioned" to get rid of excess heat at lower body temperatures if you work out regularly. Your body will become more efficient at lowering your core temperature and you will sweat sooner and in greater amounts. At the same time overweight people tend to sweat more because the fat acts as insulation...keeping body heat in and keeping core temperature high.
Recipes Veggies Aug 06 2007

IF you can get fresh or frozen, they are much better than canned. Canned veggies have a distinct tinny flavor and are usually (unless you buy the low-sodium version) high in sodium.

I usually steam things like broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, etc. Spinach is wonderful when sauteed in a bit of oil with chopped onions and garlic. You can use that spinach with rigatoni with tomatoes, basil and a bit of either feta or parmesan.

I also like grilled veggies. We like bell peppers, onions, corn, squash & zucchini, eggplant, asparagus (YUM!)...the list is endless. I usually brush them with a bit of olive or canola oil and lightly salt and pepper before throwing them on the grill.

I also love salads. You can either top them with some sort of meat or leave them all-veggie. I used to have a wonderful, health-conscience recipe for spinach salad with hot bacon dressing...I'll try to find it.

Another way to get some veggies in is to puree them. You can make delicious sauces by blending veggies together. You can't taste any particular vegetable but, as gross as it might sound, if you mix them together with herbs and spices you get something pretty tasty...even for my husband who despises anything healthy, lol.

Keep trying them. For some it's an acquired taste. As my son always tells me, "You have to try something at LEAST 10 times before you know if you don't like it."

gtstdriver,

Thank you so much. I need to tell my husband about this and get him to make an appt with our doctor. He has a hard time staying asleep and for the first night or two he's up before noon, usually takes a quick catnap about an hour before he has to get ready for work, and is so groggy. I can tell he's not sleeping soundly because he doesn't snore, lol. He tosses and turns a lot and says he's not getting restful sleep. Taking something like you mention might help him get a bit more sleep. I know it's taking it's toll on him...these years of flip/flop schedules. I don't know how you do it!
Health & Support High Blood Pressure Aug 03 2007

ohio....skim milk/low fat dairy is part of the DASH diet that is recommended for lowering blood pressure.

I started out in college with hypertension. I ran 3-4 miles a day and was my ideal weight. I ate lots of salts and processed foods, hardly slept and lived off of caffeine. My blood pressure was ~145/95.

After having two kids I weighed 192 lbs, ate lots of processed foods, hardly slept and lived off of caffeine. Didn't exercise. My blood pressure was ~160/110.

Now I weigh 167 lbs. I've been exercising almost every day (walk/run 60min or bike ~12-20 miles at ~15mph) for the past 4 months . I make sure I get at LEAST 7-8 hours of sleep at night, if not more. It's much easier now that the kids aren't babies. I eat complex carbs, fruits, veggies and lean meats. I eat low-fat yogurt and drink skim milk every day. I do relaxation breathing whenever I have the chance. I try not to take life so seriously. My blood pressure is now ~122/75. I don't know if it's one/two things that I'm doing differently or the whole combination that works but for the first time I can remember (besides when I was preggo) I'm off of my blood pressure meds...and I still have about 20 or so lbs to lose to reach my goal weight.

Exercise does really lower your blood pressure...and the effects last for hours. If you have a blood pressure monitor at home you can verify this. It goes up during (duh) but about 20-30 minutes after a workout it drops...and stays lower for hours. Your blood pressure also usually increases gradually during the day and can vary from measurement to measurement. Also make sure you are taking it properly.

Have you talked to your doctor about what things you can do specifically to lower your blood pressure? I like my doctor because instead of dictating to me what I have and what I need to do he actually LISTENS to me and my symptoms and what helps ME. I have white coat hypertension and I'm very grateful that he believes me when I tell him that my blood pressure is much different at home than in his office. He also takes note of what I think might help my situation...even if it's not something mainstream, like my getting plenty of sleep. He thought it was interesting and commented on a study being done on the effects of long-term sleep deprivation. My point is to find a doctor who will take the time to listen to you and talk to you about what steps you need to take. Good luck!

How has your sleep been, seeing that you have company? I don't know what you do to work out but I'd break away from the relatives and take care of yourself. I agree that a lot of the time I just need to get moving when I'm in a slump. Getting the blood flowing usually does the trick...the hard part is talking myself into actually getting up and exercising, lol. JUST DO IT!

I'd love to join!

Age: 31

Starting weight: 189

Current weight: 167

Goal weight: ~140

Children: two boys, 40 & 6 and one girl, almost 4

Night eating, hectic schedule & stress are my worst faults. It also doesn't help that my husband is oblivious to his burgeoning belly and eats whatever he wants. He also doesn't eat vegetables so I feel like I'm constantly cooking 2x the amount of meals.
Foods Evening snacks Aug 03 2007
06:33 (UTC)
Personally, I leave room for my nightly snack. I try to keep my choices healthy. I like making these apple-carrot-walnut bran muffins that taste a lot like carrot cake. Sometimes I'll have a bowl of oatmeal with raisins, cinnamon and a bit of splenda. Sometimes just a bowl of cereal. It's almost a ritual of mine and helps me unwind after the kids go to bed.

Kids in bed - bath for me - brew cup of decaf tea - sit down to a cup of tea and my snack and either watch a bit of TV or catch up on my reading - BED. Sometimes just a glass of chocolate milk made with 1% milk will do the trick. I just make sure I leave enough of a caloric deficiency to have my evening snack!

My husband is also a control room operator...his hours are a bit different but he works a rotating 12 hour shift. When he's on days he works out after work, before dinner. When he's on dogs he prefers to go right to bed after work and then wake earlier in the afternoon to exercise before work...a lot like gtstdriver.

gtstdriver....how much better do you sleep when changing shifts when you take Lunesta? My husband has a difficult time sleeping during the day (despite blackout shades, earplugs, fans & a window A/C unit installed just to keep the room cool and provide white noise when he's on dogs) and I've always wondered if something like that would help him. Do you feel rested when you wake up?
Fitness sick Aug 03 2007

I'm just getting over your regular variety cold and I skipped two days of exercise because I just really felt ill. I hopped back on the treadmill today (day 3 of cold) and did an intermediate workout for my fitness level. It helped clear my sinuses and felt good.

Go with how you feel. If you start to feel bad while exercising then stop! Your body is using resources to fight the cold...give it a chance to do it's job before you give it something else to do. If you feel fine then go for it. Walking is always good...you can vary your speed to suit how you feel.
