hmm - even the 1-minute oats are still not as beneficial as old fashioned ones. pretty much the longer you have to cook them, the better they are for you. I've been told the same thing gi-jane says by two different nutritionists.

 

go for the old fashioned stuff. the longest they take is 10 minutes...

I think binging can feel god-awful... the guilt is horrendous. but I love the fact that every day is a new day. it sounds corny but if you think about it, it can be a real relief. look. maybe you slip up big time. but when the clock strikes midnight it's a new day. the calorie count goes back to Zero and you get another try at hitting your calorie goal. mostly, I think it's important to focus on what you're going for. not what you've done. you won't stop feeling bad by focusing on how much you've binged. you'll only feel better by focusing on moving forward.

binging is a huge problem for a lot of us. I have done the EXACT same thing you did yesterday - standing there at the fridge and observing that I have NO CONTROL over the fact that my hand keeps digging in the leftovers and stuffing my mouth so quickly that I can hardly swallow before I shovel another handful in. I don't know what that happens (I'm sure there's a giant psychological evaluation that's got my name on it sometime in the future!) but I *do* know that the "be kind to yourself" suggestion is the best one I have heard today! I know because it works. I've been through it.

you'll learn self control sooner or later. for now just be kind to yourself. And remember. Today is a brand new day - what you did yesterday doesn't count anymore.

hey that's actually a really good question... I have heard that Fish Oil supplements (so you get a good amount of Omega-3's in there) are really good. I have a friend who says he sleeps better and feels slightly better toward life in general after having taken them for a little while. I don't know if that's a placebo effect but it certainly won't hurt you in your quest for healthier living if you take them. to that effect, it seems that anything you can get your Omega-3's from food wise is prob also really good. Salmon, nuts, avocados. think good fat...

conversely, I would think avoiding sugar and simple carbs (that break down in your system and send you on a blood sugar rollercoaster) should be strictly avoided.

getting good sleep and very large amounts of water is always a great help in the effort to stay balanced!

I'm curious to see what other people say. I bet there's a lot of good information out there about this.

well, as far as the 'day after' thing is concerned (and I apologize that this is so late we're actually talking about the day after the day after! ) the way I deal with it is like any other day: just as I vow to keep my calories no higher than the target I also vow to keep them no lower. if you're anything like me, you've probably got a bit of guilt going and think you should skip a day of eating after binging, but that's not really healthy either. I think if you try and keep your consumption as even as you can, you may find that the binging itself may slow down (and maybe even stop) after a while.

emotionally speaking, sometimes it helps me to take a break and write down what is going on in my life - whatever I'm feeling sad about, or angry or if I don't know why I am feeling so munchy. sometimes I sit for a minute (or go for a walk, out of the house, away from food) and check in with myself "ok, what is going on with me? why do I just want to chow down right now?" sometimes it helps. sometimes it doesn't and I go ahead and eat. but always the next day is a new day and I reset everything at midnight. there seemsto be something kind of therapeutic about doing it this way. it kinda helps me forgive myself by reminding me that every day is a new day...

yes, it *is* a slippery slope. but starving yourself can be a slippery slope as well! so just remember it's all about striking a balance. just make up your guidlines and stick to them. and make sure one of those guidlines is to be healthful in your approach to food, your body and Life in general... I know you can do it! and keep us posted on your progress!

I am not an expert, but I *have* been reading about weight training a lot lately and it seems like that's the best way to gain weight with muscle, not fat. food-wise, you'd need to eat lean meats, lots of 'healthy fats' meaning things that contain Omega-3 type fats (including fish oil and avocado among other things). again (I stress this because I feel like it's super important and sometimes we dieters don't want to hear it) you have to be sure to eat well in order to support yourself in a weight-building program. check out a Muscle and Fitness Hers (or go find it online if you can't get your hands on a magazine) - they have REALLY great advice on how to eat and they also give all kinds of tips on how to work out, too, depending on what you want. it's my new favorite magazine.

YAAAAYYYY! Congrats. I know exactly what you're talking about. I actually kept several articles of clothing like that. some of it was new stuff that I never wore, but mostly it was just stuff that I had grown out of. but, just like you, I just didn't want to let them go. so about a month ago I tried on a skirt just for the hell of it and - same thing - it fit PERFECTLY. it got me so excited I started going thru all my drawers and my closet. I practically have a new wardrobe now and I never had to shop for it! it's so exciting.

so I can *completely* relate to what you're saying and believe me when I say I'm really happy for you (because I'm happy for ME too!)...

one last thing I want to say: I LOVE Calorie Count. I've tried dieting on and off over the years and, really, this is the first time I feel like I'm doing something FOR myself. learning how to eat - not just depriving myself. so even when I get to maintenance weight (which I'm getting really close to!) I won't just fall off and gain it all back.

it's the best!

anyway - CONGRATS again! keep up the good work!
