| Weight Loss | Stress and Calories? | Apr 29 2008 19:46 (UTC) |

I am just finishing up my thesis and about to defend in less than a week so I think I'm probably where you're at with stress! I have have lost a noticeable amount weight over the last three weeks. I think the most important thing is to not consume extra calories but make sure the calories you do consume are really packed with nutrients. Your body may be sedentary but your mind needs to stay sharp. If you're eating a bunch of refined carbohydrates, your blood sugar levels will bounce around a lot, which for me doesn't help with staying focused for the 14 hours or more I'm spending at my desk each day. A little extra protein doesn't hurt either. Just listen to your body I guess, if you're truly more hungry eat something. A lot of the time though, when I'm studying I tend to eat to stay awake or to focus, not because I actually need the extra calories.

Another thing to be aware of when microwaving vegetables is that they lose most of their antioxidants(up to 97%) when they are microwaved. They're still good for you but you're really missing out on a lot of the benefits that you could be getting from eating them. Steaming causes them to lose only 11%. A steamer is only a few bucks, is pretty useful to have around(mine regularly doubles as a strainer) and they're really easy to use:) Here's a link to an article about it. |

| Persimmons. Especially the Fuyu variety as you can eat them while they're still a little crunchy. I've also found if I eat one with breakfast I don't get hungry until lunch. Really sweet crunchy pears. |

| I'll get that too, particularly if I've lifted and worked a muscle group really hard or pushed myself ie running harder or faster than normal. Somebody once explained it to me that your muscles will retain water while they're healing. Muscles need to tear and heal to make more muscle so it's a good thing. As long as you go back down, I wouldn't worry about it! | |||

| Probably a dumb question, but how do you do a pelvic tilt? Is it just how it sounds? My jeans that fit perfectly two weeks ago now are too loose in the waist! I don't know if my washing machine did something funky to them but it made my day! Plus I'm now below 27" around the waist so I'm just a little closer to my goals, even if the scale isn't moving as quickly as I would like.... This challenge is definitely motivating me but unfortunately this is my busy time with my research/work so working out has not been happening as much as I'd like, though I definitely get a lot of walking in with work right now, so maybe that's making the difference! |

| I find that if I'm sore, a nice slow run or some form of cardio will actually make me feel less sore. If I skip working out entirely then I'll actually get stiffer. I would just take it a little easier than normal. But a lot of people recomend a recovery day so I might just be weird that way. Although, my ex boyfriend who ran a lot of cross country found that he would recover better from a race if he ran a slow run the next day. He said it got rid of the lactic acid build up in the muscles. You could also just go for a hike or a brisk walk. | |||

| My starting weight is 149. My goal is to lose at least 2 lbs this month and to start running 2 mornings a week. I take exercise classes 1 to 4 days a week but I'm a grad student and I can't always finish my day in time to make it to class! So I figured a good plan is to start getting up early and making working out every day a priority. My longer term goal is to lose 10lbs by December 10th. My long, long term goal is to complete the Keuka Lake duathlon next year. | |||

| I have a 1 quart mason jar on my desk (stylish, I know) which has the number of cups and ounces marked on the side. I fill it to the 3 cup mark and make it a goal to fill it a minimum of 3 times a day. I'm very goal oriented so it helps to see what I've got left to drink in ounces. | |||

| I understand what you're going through. I was at the same point about 7 years ago. My dad would literally sneak butter into the food I was eating trying to get me to gain weight. I would find out, get mad and not eat. It hurt us both. Parents can get so emotional about this because you are literally the most important thing in the world to them. They are not perfect, they are not always strong, they can be tactless and hurt our feelings in ways they would never do to someone they didn't love. Your dad loves you so much that he can't be logical, he can't be tactful about it. He sees his child starving herself! He's never had to deal with what you're trying to overcome right now and he wants you to be happy and think you're beautiful and get well. He can't intuitively know what to do in this situation to help, you need to tell him. Not eating will just hurt you. I don't think it's right to call it childish but it is part of the disease which you're trying to fight. It gives you a sense of power over your dad which hurts both of you. You need to be able to trust him to support you. In turn, he needs to be able to trust you to forgive him when he screws up. I really think you need to write a letter to your dad and/or one to both your parents telling them what you need from them. You can't expect them to give you the support you need without telling them. I really wish you the best. I've gotten much better and have realized all this stuff many years down the road. I wish I had figured it out sooner. Please don't let this stop your progress. |

| Weight Loss | cals in...does it matter how we do that? | May 25 2007 21:05 (UTC) |

| LOL Actually, if you're going with a pure buttertarian diet than you could have a stick and a half! If you only eat one stick, that's only 800 calories and you'll go into starvation mode! It doesn't matter what you eat you'll lose, as long as you're in your calorie range for having a proper deficit. But if you eat lots of fruits and vegetables you get more food for the same number of calories and feel more satiated... The all martini diet would be more my style... and olives are a fruit! |

| Hey undertherainbow- Here are two links discussing the effect of high fructose corn syrup. The first is from the Washington Post and shows both sides and does a brief synopsis of the current research: http://www.washingtonpost.com/ac2/wp-dyn/A800 3-2003Mar10?language=printer the second is the synopsis/abstract from a scientific study published in 2002 on the effects of fructose on weight gain and insulin resistance: http://www.ajcn.org/cgi/content/abstract/76/5 /911 As the researchers state, more human research needs to be done but until then it seems a good idea to at least limit the amount of high fructose corn syrup in the diet. On the other hand, everyone's bodies are different and if you can sip a 12 oz can of coke all day and it supresses you appetite, then that's fantastic and I'm very jealous! | Everyone is doing so well, it really inspires me and keeps me on track even when the scale refuses to move at the pace I'd like! The scale went down 2lbs this week(then up one but its TTOM so only up 1 lb is amazing progress)! Yesterday I ran/walked 4 miles at lunch then did my tae-cardio kickboxing class after work. All in all about 90 minutes of hard cardio. I felt like jello last night and sore this morning but it was great to push myself and succeed. |

| Why don't you drink a glass of milk instead? Coke, in the US at least, is loaded with Corn Syrup which is not only bad for you but can increase your hunger. Plus it's a big jolt of sugar. Carbonated beverages are also bad for your teeth. Why not add a couple of glasses of chocolate skim milk? It may have a lot of sugar but it also has protein and calcium. A coke occasionally isn't bad overall but I don't think it's a great every-day habit to get into. Fat also keeps you full and is good for you, depending on what sort of fats you are consuming. If you are able to keep a 1,000 calorie deficit and are satisfied then the extra fat may be keeping you on track by keeping you satieted. |

| Fitness | eating too many activity calories back? | May 24 2007 14:53 (UTC) |

| trhawley- Do you set your calorie expenditure at sedentary or a different level? I should probably do it off of the total but in terms of motivation, it gets me working out every day and harder if I picture the those calories as seperate "bonus points" I can use towards dinner or a bite or two of chocolate. Like today, I'm going out with my boyfriend's sisters tonight so I know I'll probably eat more than I would normally. So I'm running at lunch and doing a tae cardio kickboxing class after work. niltzsh- How accurate do you find the CC estimations as compared to your hrm? I'm so excited about mine but I haven't quite figured out how to make it work yet(not very good at remembering to read directions FIRST) |

| I went and looked at my calorie expenditure for the day, which I have set as sedentary so I can add in my exercise expenditures. It started out as 1776. I then added in 10 minutes of running at 9mph which added up to 171 calories. Then I looked at my analysis and daily expenditure calories. They had dropped to 1755. So yes, I think the CC calculators automatically subtract your normally burnt calories. So I eat 1200 calories per day plus what I burn working out. And it's working slowly but steadily for me. Hope this helps! I think a lot of the issue is that people may not be burning as many calories as they think exercising. It's hard to judge how hard you're working out, especially at the beginning. Also as your body adjusts to a routine, it becomes more efficient at performing it. You really need to switch it around to keep your body guessing. I just bought a HRM and am really excited to be able to figure out my calorie expenditure during my work outs! It's probably the most accurate way to judge how hard you're working out as well as how many calories you're burning. |

| When is your last dress fitting? At 5 feet tall that amount of weight will make a significant difference in the fit and may make it very difficult for your seamstress to bring it in. After your last fitting you really should try to stay at the same weight. Your dress will end up fitting oddly otherwise, which will look worse than an extra few pounds... But good luck losing up until your last fitting and congratulations! I'm sure you will look gorgeous! | |||

| Thanks for all the advice! 650 seems pretty high so I think I'll play it by ear and possibly eat an extra 200 calories on top of my 1200 so I'm not way under. I'm cranky about the no working out thing though. I was planning on waiting 3 or 4 hours and doing a light cardio work out at home but now maybe I won't and I'll do it in the morning. I know I won't be able to go 72 hours but maybe something light like a brisk walk or slow jog wouldn't really be classified as strenuous.... | |||
| Weight Loss | Wine and weight loss | May 17 2007 14:26 (UTC) |

| I've been wondering the same thing. It doesn't help that my boyfriend's parents own a winery so there is always plenty of really good, free wine around! Lately I've been considering cutting out drinking wine with dinner to 4 nights a week and seeing if that helps. But a glass of wine with dinner is something I take a lot of pleasure in, much more than a slice of cake or an extra serving of dinner so it's been much harder to want to give up. We could all cut it out for a week then report if we see a quicker loss. Not exactly a large sample pool but it would be interesting.... |

| I love chocolate and really am miserable going without it. What I've found has worked for me is buying really exotic, dark expensive chocolate bars in unusual flavor combinations. My favorite is dark chocolate with cinnamon and cayenne pepper. It has a little heat and a very intense taste so after 1/2 of one square I am very satisfied. This works out to about 30 calories based off the serving size. If it's TTOM I will probably eat this amount maybe twice a day. Otherwise, it's the last thing I eat at night. Milk chocolate is really not very chocolaty so it's easy to eat a lot of it. Plus if you only let yourself buy the expensive stuff, it really is harder to justify going through it quickly. |

| What is your blood pressure like? A friend of mine had that problem and it was due to his extremely low blood pressure. If he ate a large meal he would get extremely dizzy and sick feeling and would occasionally black out due to his blood pressure dropping even farther. Maybe it would be worth checking it at least, before and after a big meal, although with eating 4-5 times a day, you're not having a single large meal. | |||
| Health & Support | Birth Control - IUD | May 09 2007 18:52 (UTC) |

|
I have the non-hormonal copper iud(paraguard). I went to planned parenthood for it as I was fairly sure my gyno through school would refuse to insert one(my friend was told "no" the week before). As long as you're in a monogamous relationship, and understand the std risks, I believe they'll insert one. It took some effort to get it in but now I don't have to mess with birth control for over 10 years! The downside: I had bad cramping for a while afterwards and my periods have gotten MUCH heavier and MUCH longer. I used to be 1 light day, 2 heavy days, 1 light day. Now I'm literally on day 14 of my period- 5 of those very heavy. But it's better than being pregnant! With the hormonal IUD your period is radically reduced, unfortunately I am very sensitive to HBC and I don't want to go through getting another IUD placed again. If I had to do it over again I would probably go for the hormonal one and just risk the side effects. But in my opinion an IUD is probably the most reliable and easy birth control out there. |

| I eat Kashi golean for breakfast every day and Amy's nearly every day for lunch. It's a little expensive but I find it really helps me keep track of my calories. I usually eat a piece of fruit mid morning and another with lunch and I'm full until dinner time. If I'm going to have a hard work out, I'll substitute in a yogurt for the fruit (Stonyfield 2x a day- 50% of your calcium and 120 calories). I think Amy's is pretty tasty for frozen food! Which types did you buy? I love the brown rice and vegetables bowl. | |||
