Fitness Am I.. Sedentary, Lightly Active, Moderately Active, Very Active...? Sep 29 2007

littlebytes is right, but if you want to use the general settings tthink, seditary - not really doing anything, and your walking and cycling and swimming and going to the gym - does it really feel like nothing? id say light to moderate activity depending on what you do outside of you activities - if its sat down all day (eg desk job, or stay at home) then light if you standing/walking (eg sales assistant, running around after kids) then id put moderate
Weight Loss What does your cheat day look like? Sep 29 2007

i try not to have a cheat day every week, more have a cheet day for every 1 pound i lose so that i dont halt my weight loss (in theory) my next cheet day will be this (i already have it planned to motivate me)

breakfast - 2 thick slices whole wheat bread, toasted with 2 poached eggs and a glass of orange juice with sparkling water

snack - coffee with milk and sugar or starbucks cappucino

lunch - a small/medium (depending on where i buy it) cornish pasty with side salad

snack - banana and peanut butter or banana and nut crepe

dinner - fish and chips shared with a friend

desert - 1/2 dark chocolate bar with a hot chocolate made with fat free milk

i think it will come to about 2500 calories so im planning on going to the gym and have at least a 2 mile walk on that day so that i will be eating my maintanance calories. But to be honest it doesnt matter if i go over by 1000 calories it just meens it will be alittle longer before i have another cheat day. Tongue out

unfortunatly the only thing i dont like anymore is pure fruit juice, after years of drinking at least 16oz a day then i started dieting and didnt drink it for 6 months, now i cant stand it (undiluted) its just too strong, 1/2 glass with sparkling water is ok but other then that, i just cant do it lol i think since i became more lax with the food i eat ive ruined any chance of going off the bad for you foods anymore (sigh)

protien drink sounds good, it would be even better if you make your own, mix up some fruit, add some yogurt and add protien powder its probably cheaper in the long run and you can have as much variety as you like then. As for juice just make sure you go for 100% fruit juice and not the ones with added sugar in etc, get the ones with pulp and the sugars are then all natural just dont go over board, i like to half 1/2 cup orange juice with 1 cup of sparkling water this way i can have the drink twice a day totalling 8oz (if i want it) without consming too much orange juice (i used to drink at least 4 cups of juice before i started dieting, thinking it was a healthy option!! HA not in those quantities lol)

Alot of people also add things like flax seed to their cereal that would help with fat and is very good for you (havnt tried it yet so i dont know what it tastes like)

On my active days these are my favourate lunches (especially if i have to pack it for work)

  • a sandwich - 2 slices of whole wheat bread (160 cals) lettuce, tomato and sliced green onion (20 cals) 1/3 can tuna (60 cals) 1 tbsp light mayo (45 cals) or i mix the tuna with whatever salad dresing i fancy that day. = 285 cals + side salad (50 cals) + banana (120 cals) + yogurt (80 cals) = 535 total
  • a wrap - 1 whole wheat wrap (100 cals) 2 oz chicken breast sliced (100 cals), roasted red pepper slices (20 cals) 1/2 oz goats cheese (40 cals) lettuce nd tomato slices (12 cals) = 272 cals + veggie sticks (cucumber, sweet peppers, celery, carrot etc) (50 cals) + 2tbsp roasted red pepper houmus  (50 cals) + apple (80 cals) = 452 total
  • a salad - 2 cups lettuce (20 cals) 1/2 cup cherry tomatoes tomatoes (22 cals) red onion rings (10 cals) sliced olives (15 cals) 1oz feta cheese (75 cals) 1/2 oz pine nuts (95 cals) 2 tbsp salad dressing (60 cals) = 297 + whole wheat crackers (120 cals) + peach (40 cals)= 457 cals total

As you can see each option includes fats, carbs and protien, theres isnt too much volume and each come to about 500 cals. But i think your reasoning is pretty good if you enjoy eating at work, stick to that.

(Ps i hope my addition is correct lol)

Weight Loss not sure, but i think ive been making a mistake :( Sep 20 2007

not everyone consumes too much fat, when i started dieting i basically only ate non fat foods i didnt add any fats to my cooking and my daily % was between 8% and 15% fat per day and i felt tired all the time and hungry all the time my doctor told me i needed to add more fat so i did and have felt alot better ever since my daily fat intake has been between 20 - 30%

And if anyone is struggling to consume enough cals a day i bet they are not eating enough fat, to start with, my other sugestions were to help tractorizer increase cals without going into junk food which she said she didnt really want to do. you get more nutriants in juice or milk then a chocolate bar. AND i didnt sugest she go over board with the aditions, just ideas as to increase cals without the bulk. the only food id like to add which i didnt is avacado. if you can think of better choices then say so and try to help her as well, instead of arguing.

(sorry tractorizer for speaking about you in the 3rd person)

fruit juice with pulp is full of nutriants and fiber - not as good as whole fruit but still good, the right oils are also good for you - think mediteranian diet, and theres nothing wrong with 2 % milk, you get alittle extra fat in for the day and protien its not like i sugested whole milk!!! FAT IS GOOD FOR YOU anyway!!! just in the correct quantities!

Hi i guess ive come to this thread alittle late but ill add my $0.02 starting with eating back calories, so there is STILL a debate as to whether you should eat back calories or not, theres is very little out there that says you should 'eat back calories' with that phrasing BUT nearly EVERY website that tells you how many cals you should consume will take into account your activity level, so the more active you are the more calories you need. Isnt this the exact same thing but put more simply?!?! its not sayng if you burn 1 more calorie you need to eat 1 more calorie to maintain buts its still covering the whole eating back calories idea.

on a more helpful note as how much you should be eating has been pretty well covered lol ill try to help with the how too's.

try adding butter/mayo to sandwiches, regular salad dressings or make your own for salads, add nuts and/or seeds to meals they make a nice crunch even in sandwiches, also you could add beans. Eat higher calorie fruit such as mango, banana's or add dried fruit for snacks or in cereal etc... You could add honey or maple syrup to cereals as well to sweeten them and add a few healthy calories. eat peanut butter! mmmmmmmmmmmmmm! if you like it that is. Drink pure fruit juices, if the taste is too strong add some sparkling water. drink 2% milk instead of fat free, make yourself a smoothie for a snack or part of a meal instead of just drinking water and cook with alittle extra vergin olive oil or canola oil. all of these ideas will help you easily increase calories without making you feal uncomfortably full.

i hope this is helpful

Foods Dried Fruits Sep 12 2007
00:33 (UTC)

you should be eating organic dried fruit, especially in fruits where alot of pesticides/chemicals are used because aparently drying them out consentrates the chemicals - so ive read. other wise i dont see a problem with them like, personally i love them on my cereal in the morning! mmmmmmmm

Weight Loss Paleolithic.. Sep 09 2007

ignore diets all together, eat healthily and eat a balanced diet, very few foods are bad for you if eaten in the right quantitys, the only rule i try to follow is to include as many of the 'healthiest' foods into my diet - you know the 14 so called healthiest foods, i dont know how effective they are at preventing diseases or helping weightloss etc but they certainly arent going to be doing any harm
Weight Loss What do you eat on the Rotation diet? Sep 09 2007

i havnt heard of it but my guess would be alot of fruits and vegetables

i would think it would be something like this (to be remotly well porportioned) -

breakfast 1 slice of whole wheat bread toasted, 2 egg whites and a small fruit (about 200 cals)

lunch large salad - lettuce, peppers, onions, mushrooms, tomatoes, carrots, beets etc with half a can of tuna (about 150 cals)

dinner - stirfried vegetables (with oil spray) and 1/8 cup beans (about 200 cals)

snack - small fruit (50 cals)

and LOTS of water

of course i dont think anyone should do this as you can see you would be getting practically no fat and too little protien, you would probably be feeling hungry all the time, would lower your metabolism and wouldnt be giving your body all the nutrients it needs.

my guess is if you went on low calorie day then higher calorie day and rotated it you wouldnt do a great deal of harm to your self BUT its not something you would be able to do all your life, so when you come off of the diet you would most likely put all the weight back on.

yeh i just did it the other way round - adding it all up then i took away the 350 cals included in the seditary level for 6 hrs or so

Im so happy! Laughing mostly because i was getting fed up with eating between 1200 and 1400 cals because of no excersise.

Ok so i totaled everything up for one day in the excersise log and it came to 1635 calories burned so if i take-away 350 cals (what i naturally burn in that time) it still comes to 1200 calories (give or take). the calculaters on here then tell me i burn 1400 calories at a seditary setting so does that mean i burn a total of 2600 calories a day?

If so WOW i can eat 2000 calories a day and still lose weight!! woohoo for excersise!

Although ill probably eat 1800 until i get a heart rate moniter just to be careful

Well i was thinking saturday and sunday were sort of rest days because on those days im basically only walking or cycling to and from work and to and from a friends house, but  could always drive on the sunday nd just have the work as an 'activity'. im thinking of getting one of those heart rate moniters, i guess i will just have to wait until i get one to really find out how many cals i burn.

another sugestion

how about you start out with small changes, and increase your calories by lets say 50 cals a day until you get to a minimum of 1200 cals, using high cal, low volume foods so that you dont feel full too soon.

eg

eat 1/2 a mango chopped up with 1/2 cup full fat cottage cheese and 1/8 cup sunflower seeds for breakfast

1/2 cup vegetable sticks with 1/4 cup houmus dip for morning snack

salad for lunch and force yourself to add and eat meat, fish, beans, nuts or cheese etc with it personally i love having a salad with 2 cups of greens, 1 cup veggies (such as onions, peppers, mushrooms etc), 1 oz goats cheese, 1 tbsp chopped nuts and some lemon sprincled ontop.

a piece of fruit for afternoon snack with some cheese or nuts

have your veggies for dinner - stirfry them with a little oil add some beans (chickpeas are great in stirfrys)

then each day add one things like day 1 add a piece of whole wheat bread, day 2 add alittle extra dressing, day 3 add some extra seeds and so on until you get to where you need to be
