Wow - nice to hear from you Muns! Missed you!

***waving to jcr, dee and muns all at the same time***

So, if we're all so busy running around here and there, keeping families together, walking a million miles at the mall while shopping, WHY aren't we losing weight with all this activity?   I'm sure I'm more active now than I was 10 years ago...  it kind of points to eating too much!  Uh-oh!

Okay everyone, it's the beginning of a new month and the end of the year at the same time... double incentive to accomplish great things before 2009.  Let's get moving!

I'm going to "shop 'til I drop" tonight or something like that, but I'm still going to exercise before I go.  No excuses!

Hi Everyone,

Life has been crazy busy -- and still is - just thought I'd pop in and say "hi".

I will try to do a catch up soon.

take care all

Cool

Maybe we could all quote Dee!  It pretty well sums up where I'm at right now...

Our summer yard projects are still not completed.  I'm trying to finish up in between rainy spells, which are very frequent this time of year.

And now the Christmas season is upon us!  What's everyone doing to avoid the typical 10 pounds that get added on this time of year?  I didn't do well over Thanksgiving, so I'm renewing my efforts at being more mindful of eating, but especially making plans so that I get regular exercise.

Happy December to everyone!

I love pita bread but haven't tried them in mini-pizza mode.  It sounds like a great idea!  Last time I bought some mini-pockets.  They're about 3 or 4 inches in diameter.  I got to enjoy a couple of them before DS (teenage son) polished them off.  LOL - I better eat faster next time!

lilad - YES!  Imagine starting a year, and not being in the "take the weight off that I just regained" mode.  That sounds wonderful!

Change - you should be proud of the accomplishment!  It's great that you have a fun exercise that isn't making something hurt Laughing

I missed exercising on Monday, so my back is to the wall to exercise all the rest of the days this week if I'm going to get in 6 sessions.  Maybe I should go back and edit my goals ;)   Not really, though.  It made me squeeze in some time on the treadmill yesterday that I wouldn't ever have done otherwise.  It felt great!

Wheeeeee!  LOL!  That is hilarious - and yes, we're right there in the middle of that scene now!

Was that Munsey on the motorized shopping cart???? ... and Change hanging on the back??  ;)   Those girls really get around!

Yes!!  I like this thought :)  I don't want to have New Years regrets and huge new resolutions.  I'd much rather be continuing on a very healthy path by then.

My not-yet-the-New-Year resolutions:

  • Log calories EVERY day - if I lose track of a day, I have to add in a high number to cover what it might have been
  • Exercise 30+ minutes per day, 6 days per week, including 2 weight-bearing sessions

That's probably enough for now.  One step at a time!  Have a good week everyone :)

Snow sounds so nice right now!  We've got rain, rain, rain and more rain in the forecast and it's raining right now.   I think there's a trend here!

Have you tried any new healthy foods lately?  My only adventure has been to give capers a try (in a restaurant dish).  I'm not even sure they're "healthy" per se, but they can't be too bad.  I liked them, by the way!

Good point, Change!  I don't want to be 'sunk'!  The alternative to continuing to work on good habits is NOT a pretty sight.  I, for one, don't want to go there, and I doubt anyone else on CC wants to go there either.

On a good note, I had a good exercise day yesterday.  I am planning to go walk with a friend today.  (and she walks pretty fast)  One little success!

Yes - I'm here.  Still here, I should say...  still working on losing those last obnoxious 5 or so pounds.  But also trying to convince myself that I really do have time to exercise and then make myself do it Tongue out   Sound familiar to anyone else???

Not what I expected...... had to play with em to figure it out.  And had to google to verify..

The problem is is that its not repeatable.  It stops there, to continue the pattern you have intervening numbers so its not really a pattern or sequence, just an ordering.

Yes, technically it is not a series, but hopefully a good brain-teaser anyway :)

Thanks for the TOPS pledges!  I had never heard those before.

I have had trouble several years with the One-big-party from Thanksgiving to New Years Day.  6 weeks of overeating is devastating to losing weight and to health in general.  I did okay last year, but only because I was recovering from foot surgery and couldn't walk without crutches.  It was toooo much trouble to get up to get more to eat, and I didn't have much of an appetite anyway, thank goodness!

This year, I plan to keep logging calories right through November and December.  I may go way over my "limit" on a couple of days, but I don't plan to let one or two days turn in to 6 weeks of over-eating.  I could easily undo the last 4 months of work in 6 weeks of stuffing myself.

Let the turkey be stuffed, not me!

The yoga class was good!  I wouldn't call it fun, but it was relaxing, and a good workout at the same time.  My final determination will be made after I see what's sore tomorrow...
I really need to strengthen my core muscles and work on improving balance.  Yoga is a good match for those needs.
The instructor has a wonderful, smooth, soft voice; I could just listen to her talk and get almost as much benefit (jkjk!)

Good suggestions for getting in more exercise :)  I did some of that, with mixed success, with the kids when they were younger.  Now my home-schooled victim, ahem, I mean student, is 15 and way faster/stronger than I am at just about everything!  We do go swimming together once a week, hopefully starting this week, so that's a step in the right direction.  Yay!
My big adventure this fall is starting tomorrow - I signed up for a yoga class at the community center.  I'm not terribly coordinated; I don't think I've taken an exercise class since High School.  This should be good for some laughs if not some exercise!

Good for you, Olivia :)  It's hard to look at the long term problems and address them without being overwhelmed.  Take it a bit at a time; you'll do just fine.

Okay, I'm another SAHM.  I work a few hours a week away from home, but that's it.

Love - I also home-school; that's where some of the "too busy" comes from in September.  It's always crazy for 2 or 3 weeks, then I finally fall into a routine.  This year the routine needs to include exercise, though.  It would probably help if I could get myself up a little earlier and exercise then, but I'm a cover-hound first thing in the morning.  LOL!   I did get on the treadmill last night; it really felt good even though I felt like I was falling asleep.

Hey Auntie Bub!  Long time no C!  It sounds like you've been living in a whirlwind of activity this summer.  You've done well to lose 7 pounds and keep it off :)  I had to laugh at no TV for a week... reminds me of dealing with naughty kiddo's!  And it should leave you lots of extra time for walking ;)  Be sure to stop in again soon and give us a progress report!

I'm still working hard to get the yard projects done; I had set aside today to work out there and it's rained alllll day.  I may have to go hop on the treadmill just to get some exercise, but I'm still in total denial that summer is coming to an end :-O

Love - that sounds good :)  I think our bodies are pretty smart sometimes!   It also sounds like you watch your balance of protein, carb and fats very carefully!   Maybe you'll find a small tweak one way or the other will make your stomach feel much better.  (here's hoping, at least!)

I've been very bad about exercise this week - just "too busy".  I can't afford to do that very many weeks in a row, though.  So, I must get up and moving now to avoid problems during the holidays.
Have a good weekend everyone!

Muns -I hope your "baby" had a good checkup!
Drat and double drat, my yard projects still aren't done, so the bikes have sat pretty much all summer. I miss my babies!   On the good side, at least I'm getting lots of muscles from the yard work.  Gotta' look at the bright side, I guess.

Hey Love-
I hope this will be encouraging; a friend of mine had IBS symptoms for a few years and then it went away all by itself.   I think Olivia's advice of doing some internet research is a great idea.  You will know if your symptoms "fit" the IBS description or not.   Also, I'm no nutritionist, but I would agree with the doctor that you may need more protein.  I think I'm a little smaller than you and eat the same amount of dairy each day (Milk, yogurt and cottage cheese), but also have cheese and a bit of meat for lunch and chicken, lean beef or lean pork for dinner.  I still often run borderline low on iron.  It might be worth checking to see if protein consumption has anything to do with IBS; it may have been just a random comment that he made.
At least Zantac is pretty mild; it's worth a try if it possibly helps lessen your symptoms.  Hope you find something that helps :)

LOL - I guess we're going to have to be more specific!  Loven is looking for a bicycle type bike, at least I think???   (Maybe I assumed wrong!)

Hey Loven - are you looking for a bicycle or a motorcycle??

My bike is an ooooold Honda Nighthawk.  But I like it, and would prefer to ride any day it's warm enough to keep from freezing my toes and fingers off.
I used to work at our church - there were a few really shocked looks the first day I rode in to work and of course parked right by the front door :P

Loven- I bought a new bike at the end of last summer.  I love it!  Right now is a great time to buy one if you can since most places are closing out their 2008 models.  (Just like cars...)  Hope you find something that you like.

lala- it must be the influence of Labor Day.  It wants to be remembered with the BIG holidays, so it has tried to exert weight-gaining influence on all of us ;)

Hope this next week goes better for you!

Just so "the old lady" doesn't think she killed the thread... I'll add something.  (Happy Birthday, JCR!!)

Now that the school year is beginning and all the busyness the gets added to the schedule, it's taking more work to keep eating well, and it's especially hard to get regular exercise.  I easily slip into couch potato mode so when I get busy, exercise is the first thing to go out of my schedule.

And that probably starts a downward spiral; first, less exercise day after day means lost muscle.  The metabolism slows down, and eventually you go from losing or maintaining to gaining.  And it ain't pretty!!  So the challenge for me is to figure out how to keep exercise high in my priority list, even if it means something else doesn't get done.

What do people not get about what child-raising is all about??  So sorry you had a stressful time of it, love, but you took care of that child perfectly.  Good for you.
I know you can catch the wagon as it goes by early tomorrow morning; you'll do great.

Olivia - good thought to increase workouts near the holidays to help compensate for extra calories  (duh- didn't even cross my mind!)  That's probably more reasonable than not eating extra calories.

Oh yeah! - a short skirt and fishnets would do quite nicely as long as you keep the halter top ;)  There should be a little break for those of us over 50, don't ya' think?

Sounds like you two are off and 'running'!  Loven, how often do you walk?  I'm trying to get in 5 times a week (either walking or bicycling), but have struggled this week because of a cold.

Have a great weekend; wish I was going to the races or something other than doing yard and house projects all weekend!

I would really like to be accountable here, too.  I'm within 10 pounds of goal as well - I was at my goal a year ago, but gained back some last spring rather quickly.  I'm still working to get it off for good.

I'm not terribly opinionated on an official weigh-in...  I've only been weighing once a month since May.  It has helped me focus on food choices and exercise instead of on the number on the scales.  Haven't decided how much longer to continue, though.

Have any of you thought about a strategy for doing well through the holidays?  There's the "lose it ahead of time 'cause I know I'm going to gain then" or there's also "I'm going to the parties, but I'm not going over my limit for any one day/week/month"  approach.  I"m not sure either of those is totally realistic...  any thoughts?
