aw thanks so much for your detailed reply!

after reading your reply, i thought "but alas, all chocolate contains milk and my brother cannot have any milk at all..." then I realized I do not know this for sure. so after some digging, I found, HOLY CRAP, bittersweet chocolate is milk free! Hooray! Thank you for your line of questioning! And also for your excellent pastry tips!

That's what I worry about, but this is supposed to be one of those fancy flourless cakes with the consistency of chocolate ganache, which is why I thought it might work with solidified chocolate sauce.

Reading some of the reviews now, tho, it seems that this chocolate sauce does not really solidify very well.

So, if anyone also knows any thickening agents that would be kind of like milk (but not) or gluten free, It'd be appreciated.

would unflavored gelatin possibly work? thanks!

Weight Loss losing weight on bust Jul 16 2008

unfortunately, outside of liposuction, we can't lose weight in spots, just tone muscles in certain areas. but since you're growing, your body still has room to grow in other areas that should even you out. I would suggest light exercise, eating healthy and live care free for now! hell, I had Cs and was very happy, but overweight. when I lost weight (15-17 lbs), I lost them too :(. I'm the smallest bust size since I got real boobs, so we all get a mixed bag, just focus on the positive :)

cheers!

Weight Loss Exercise over diet? Jul 16 2008
21:54 (UTC)

it depends on if you're exercising or not, too. I'm 5'2 and was 133. I started off with exercising to workout vids  (8 min, abs, buns, etc) and did just one workout (8 min) every other day because I was SUPER lazy and also walked a lot, at least an hour a day of just walking. I also stuck to a calorie intake I KNEW i could handle. if you cut down too quickly you have very little chance of continuing. in about a month I'd lost five - seven pounds, and I was doing 20-30 min workouts every other day and still walking and I had a little four pack forming on my tummy. then in the middle of june I had some torubles sticking to my cals, let alone exercise, so I went back to basics. I have still been losing, but the effects are LESS noticeable without exercise. I strongly suggest exercise and diet, especially in the beginning, because obvious effects of your hard work are the absolute BEST motivator to keep you going when times get tough. and take before and after pics. I wish I had!

so, about two to three weeks is the short answer. especially if you DON'T cheat yourself.

cheers!

Motivation Goal Jeans? Jul 14 2008

congrats on your progress!

I'm also 5'2 and started out three years ago in high school at 145 and wore a size 11, sometimes 13. two days ago when I last weighed myself i was 114. I started using calorie count after I'd already lost ten pounds just through walking, spring 2007, (i was a size 7-9 in some pants) when living in a dorm room and eating the caf food was getting me back to an unhealthy weight and state of mind. I lost another ten pounds by last fall, I was 124 and wore a size five. then I gained ten pounds back and my regular jeans were getting tight, let alone my skinny ones, they were out of the question. I started this past april first and now I weigh the least I ever have not only in my adult life but since my early teens.

I had a pair of 124 dollar guess jeans a friend had bought me, they were a size 28 or something. Who could waste a present like that?! I had a lot of motivation from those pants, haha. Now I have to go shopping for another pair of skinny jeans. I'm looking to fit into a size three! from 11 -3 in about three years. Jeans are a great motivator.

Try them on. Yeah, if they don't fit there wil be that moment of frustration and little sadness, but it quickly turns into fuel for motivation so if you ever find yourself drifting from your diet and your goals try them on to give yourself a little kick in the pants (my puns are awful, I know).

I'm surprised by the many negative effects of yaz reported here. I have been on it for more than a year now, and only recently have a had a little trouble with spotting, surprising at time but nothing frightening. It is VERY sensitive to taking it EXACTLY at the same time every single day and missed days, so you have to be careful, which I'm not sometimes. No big difference in skin complexion or weight for me,  unlike with ortho tri-cyclen lo. actually I've lost weight (15-17 lbs.) in the past two or three months. And i've had no mood swings, like I did on the patch. I guess it's just everyone has to find their own. It's frustrating because as you get older your hormones changes, so every year or two years you could need a different RX because of the side effects that surface due to changes in your body. I initially started with the patch because my periods, cramps, blaoting moods were AWFUL. yaz is okay for me, i find that people who have problems with the same kinds of birth control have more success with the same kinds too, in many cases. hope this helps!

through high school i went from around 11-13, then after i gradutaed I dropped to a 9 then a 7 and i was there for a year, then went to a five. been a year since then so now I'm getting on the fitness thing again and I'm feeling like i might need to go to a 3. pretty exciting. (i'm 5'2, 122-120 and of rather small structure so i'm not anorexic. my bfp is like 23% haha.)

Weight Loss Quit smoking for 4 months now and gained 10 pounds May 25 2008

if you smoke less than five cigarettes a week, and then suddenly you stop, do you think that it would still affect weight gain?

another thought:

instead of quitting cold turkey, should people maybe just progressively smoke less? instead of sitting there going "THIS IS IT" to maybe wean themselves slowlyover a month or two might combat the pregressive weight gain.

Hey, I'm about halfway through my weightloss now. I'm 5'2, was 133 april 1st and now I'm 121. hurray! I see there's some people who had my same stats and I just want to encourage that it's easy after awhile! cooking and measuring REALLY helped me, so did daily hour long walks with occasional half hour of strength exercise. I can't believe i weigh the least I ever have since i was 18 RIGHT NOW. if you don't have a scale, get one from tanita! only about 30 something dollars and mine gives me body fat percentage and body water percentage, so if I gain weight, sometimes its muscle and I don't feel so bad, or its water weight so its only temporary. great for morale!

I'm still going for 110 tho, so I need some extra motivation, I've been slipping lately Embarassed.

oddly enough, stress hasn't been making me gain weight, lord knows there's enough of it going around tho. stay strong guys!

Weight Loss Question May 25 2008

not that i've ever seen. you can try adding your activities to whatever your usual total burn is. your logs have a backlog feature thingy, fi you scroll down to the bottom of your food or activity or weight log there is a box where you can choose from drop down boxes options like "yesterday", "last 30 entries" or a customized date section.

i wish they had the burn and intake meters with a backlog as well.

when even a little bit of sugar gives you those funny bumps (not the herp, k?) on your tongue. or even slightly greasy, fatty or sugary food makes you physically unwell.

when you ask for kitchen scales for your birthday and buying a REAL LIVE liquid measuring cup is a new development in your life,

your love/hate attitude toward your scale is one of the most complex relationships in your life.

you talk to the aerobics instructors on your DVDs, and where you used to be a die-hard couch potato, your favorite way to de-stress is the foreign activity of jogging/walking.

putting OTHER people's thoughts on the amount of definition you should do for yourself aside, I've actually been doing eight minute abs and a bunch of other eight minute vids and I've lost ten pounds in two months, in addition to dieting and i LIKE my mini four pack forming in my tummy and my miniature biceps showing up. i'm a lot stronger now too. I work in a college textbook store, so lifting lots of heavy books is tough, but it's a lot easier now. i mean, i'm no he-man or xena wanna be, i'm the furthest thing from an american gladiator, but there's not denying that some men are intimidated or put off by a girl that can hold her own physically. they feel its their territory. which is understandable I suppose. It's kind of the feeling some girls (i've had this) get when you see a dude in make-up... and you have a moment of ...."WTF THEY'RE  ACTUALLY PRETTY".

in any case, yeah, i think eight minute abs works, i started doing one eight minute work out every other day, now i do three a day (arms, abs and i alternate between thighs and buns) and it's worked a LOT.

just keep up with it and have fun!

i had a similar strange experience, after a four day binge of no less than 1700 cals and as much as 2000 (my goal is between 1200 and 1400) i lost three lbs in what seemed like an instant. and i've been losing quickly since!

it must be some freak metabolism thing.

Weight Loss The 1200 calorie limit is the average over the week right? May 11 2008
18:27 (UTC)

I'm 5'2 and my cal target ranges from 1295 - 1400. I think they are asking if, at the end of the week if you add up your weekly cals, then divide by seven, you should get about 1200. which is a nice way of keeping track of things remember that 1200 isn't a number to live and die by, go up and down from 1400-1200 and you will benefit a LOT.

Thanks for all the great advice! I really do like the idea of an hourly calorie amount. and tea is also a good idea. I thought this was important, because there are many reasons people have to stay up late at night, i am usually up late all the time myself and I thought there could be a better way to do it. it is finals season, so good luck everyone and thanks for the advice! i finally get to sleep today, but tomorrow is another mess.

cheers!

pgeorgian, congratulations thank you for your thoughts, but i am looking for advice, not comparison.

anyone with any constructive, rather than critical, thoughts regarding the intake of someone, not necessarily a college student, who has to stay up late for whatever reason and how to adjust their intake, if at all, please share your thoughts. I have often wondered, as I naturally stay up past twelve, and have wondered how to accunt for this in my intake and such.

*I am not suggesting people stay up all night in order to study, yes it is stupid. yes, I am doing it anyway.

Weight Loss College Students: Advice for all-nighters?? May 10 2008

the thing is, I'm an english major. this means, ahppily next to no tests.

unfortunately, it means doing a lot of reading in a short amount of time and forming a lot of analysis and comparing of different ideologies and authors and theories, etc.

so, yes, in a typical test situation, i would absolutely have been able to be better prepared for the test with time management. but with the nature of my essays, I have to RE read the stories through skimming and take out the elemnts of the author's idea of a concept (such as in french postructuralist theory) or their devlopment of a chacracter and how this relates to naturalism or realism in the nineteenth century.

this is much more time consuming than simply KNOWING the material to be tested upon once. this is an active engagement and devlopment of it, and it is on a time limit. so, while i would absolutely have given the same "go to bed" advice to anyone else, and while I would absolutely love to, Saussure and Howells await... I am fully aware of my actions and their consequences, and this is not some sick self inflicted torture. I'm sure there are many other organized individuals out there, but I have learned to work with my strengths and to manage my weaknesses, this is how I manage best, as unusual as it may seem.

thank you for your concern, I will dedicate my epic nap beginning tomorrow at 2 pm to your thoughtful and appreciated advice. I am not being sarcastic, I really do appreciate the replies, but things more along the lines of cel301's advice is really golden to me at this time. I was unaware of the sixteen hour hump, and will avoid horizontal studying, to the dismay of my boyfriend.

yeah waitressing is touch with that. a huge breakfast is key. also, watch it, because NOW you're eating 400 a day, but on an off day or when you leat expect it, you will have BINGE days periodically, which will gain you a lot of weight. one of my friends has been doing that kind of thing, and while she loses weight for a couple days , she builds it up SO quickly.

Weight Loss What woman could love me? :( Apr 29 2008
21:27 (UTC)

alright, A) don't be down on yourself. the most unattractive thing to a woman is a lack of confidence. its sad but true. that's not to say run around with a massive ego, but if you're talking about the negatives of yourself that's all other people will get to see of you.

B) the first poster is absolutely right. there's always someone for somebody! just put yourself out there! join some sort of group or project you wouldn't normally get involved in. building socially will help a lot. get involved in a cancer walk or charity work (chicks dig that, lol, but seriously!) showing people how big hearted you are inside shows them its absolutely worth it in the deal to accept who you are outside.

a lot of corny cliches, but they're true. Whenever someone moves on without you its natural to wonder "what's wrong with me?" but its better to realize it didn't work out FOR A REASON and to wonder a little bit (just a little bit) "hey, I'm awesome. what's wrong with THEM?"

edit: p.s. I dated people that were just as decent when I was 20 pounds heavier and has just as good a time as I do now. the physical thing isn't a huge factor

I kind of droppe out for a bit (for some reason I thought this group was in weight loss) but I'm hanging in there!

My last weigh (it was before monday, sorries) was 128. I was 127. something for a bit.

I might be at a muscle gaining plateau? my weight is stationary but my bfp according to my tanita scale is going down! despite an awful rare weekend binge! I think I i will have to start incorporating a weekly cheat meal, in the form of chicken fingers or a piece of pizza into my weekly diet.

5'2, f, 20

128!

Hooray! five pounds since I started this! Also, I'm wearing my jeans WITHOUT a muffin top! yay me! also I see ABS! who else is seeing results?

anyone who has any expertise or knowledge of nutrition, body fat percentage, muscle gaining or workout advice, I'd like to speak to you! I have general questions about how I'm going about this.

ditto! it runs in my family that everyone loses weight in their face first. lately I've noticed a line in my thighs and little abs! and a shadow of a bicep peeking out. It's sooo awesome. Sometimes (when I'm doing my awkward-looking aerobics) I do my arm lifting while looking in the mirror. when you see your little muscles flex and look bigger it's really motivating!

that's awesome! Weight Loss Non-supportive friends and family members Apr 28 2008
19:42 (UTC)

my mom has always been very competitive with me. even when I was in grade school and would bring home an A paper she'd say "well, I got As ALL the time" instead of "good job! keep trying!". now I'm in college its "I worked 30  hours a week, paid for school, lived on my own, and took 21 credits a semester and got all As! why can't you! why are you so dependent!". I'd like to point out I lived completely independently for a year on my own before going to school, no help from mom and dad until I wanted to go to college. semesters have gotten a tiny bit more expensive since 1976, so I need help there, true and with paying for my apartment and life sometimes.

Sorry for the tangent, but the issue is, I was a chubby kid in high school (5'2, 145, even 150 at one horrible point) and my mom just kept feeding me, refused to take me to a doctor or encourage weight loss in any way. She's had four kids and a C section so she has (understandably) always struggled with her weight and esteem. she gets facials, haircuts, new clothes, and pedicures constantly and is always on some new fad diet. We went shopping in a store one time (american apparel, they have weird sizes BIG mistake) and she flipped out because she didn't fit into a large (I had on extra small leggings and a large shirt on, their sizes are so strange) she started screaming "I'm not buying you anything stop asking!" (I hadn't asked for anything, we were just in new york having a day together, she did this to publicly humiliate me, its a tactic of hers) and stormed out of the store. It's gotten to the point where I have started to accept I simply cannot have a normal relationship with my mother. Every opportunity for her to belittle my accomplishments, however small or large, or to make me feel ungrateful and dependent is exploited by her to the fullest extent.

since I've lost weight significantly after high school  (when i moved out) she's warned me about being "too skinny" (I'm anything BUT the lowest I've been is 124, i'm 128 right now) and insists on giving me her obviously oversized handmedowns and some clothes right out of her closet (for christmas!) that are obviously far too big on me. It's kind of debiliating to feel like you're making progress, then your mom comes out with an hand me down shirt she probably used when she was pregnant going "oh you'll definitely fit this, right?". It's ridiculous.

if you have a close family member that takes competition to the point of being a destructive, instead of supportive, force in your life, either go together for counseling or look for ways to minimize their impact on your life. Don't let it get out of hand or rule you! It's a sad and ugly thing...

Weight Loss No energy... help Apr 28 2008

Hey, jw, I'm 5'2, 128 definitely eating my cals (1200-1400, usually more cause i'm bad, but not by much) and exercising every other day (20 minutes walk, 20 minute walk/jog alternating, then 24 minutes strength training). The oast couple of days I have been absolutely useless I can't make myself do anything and I am tired all the time. I was especially bad this weekend,(1700 cals one day!). I wasn't able to exercise last night I was sooo tired but I was within my cal range and figured I could reward myself for self-control. I'm planning on working out tonight and tomorrow night, but I've no energy. I napped last night, then got a full night's sleep and I still can't keep my eyes open. Even my trusty sugar free rock star can't wake me up.

I don't know what to do.

you're going to want to GAIN muscle. I know at first it will be VERY difficult to handle, seeing those scale numbers climb up, but in the long run, it will be SOOOO helpful burning off all that fat. get heavy-ish weights (for you) and use those. you're 14, so you shouldn't even be WORRYING about your weight, but if you want to help yourself for longer down the line, for the rest of your life, gain a really good muscle core now, and you will have lots of control over present and any future weight problems. muscle is what burns fat even when you're sitting still, so get a lot of that and you're set. you need a caloric excess to gain muscle, so don't restrict your diet and eat lots of healthy natural protein.
