Weight Loss why did I hear this derogatory comment! Jun 08 2007

I know exactly what you mean aiswarya22.

I am currently 289lbs but was 306 just a few months ago when i was pushed into doing something due to a strangers cutting remark.

I was in the doctors office, discussing my medical conditions with him. It is a ground floor office and it was warm so the doctor had the window open.

All of a sudden a man/boy ( about 20 years old) stuck his head in the window and made a strange growling noise (obviously to impress his friends outside who were laughing loudly) , then he pulled his head back from the window and yelled. ' Hey come see the huge beef sitting in this chair'.

I didnt know what to do. I was humiliated and hurt. didnt know whether to laugh , cry, run away.... I was stumped for a reaction.

The doctor immediately closed the window and apologised.... but the damage was done.

I dont like to be seen in public because of that but in the long run, i owe that man a kind of thank you. He will always be a jerk and a bigot but thanks to him..... I will make my dream of a slimmer, healthier me. :o)

Hi Union,

ive never been a big drinker of fluids and I think that was always part of my problem.

Since i started my diet i have tried to remember to drink plenty of water but , like you, i simply forgot.

Now , what i do is drink, 16oz water with each of my 3 meals and drink the same amount every time i visit the ' bathroom' thus replacing fluid as it leaves.

It works for me and helps me to remember, (the sound of a 'tinkle' kinda reminds me) lol.

Hope this helps as much for you as it has for me. :o)

Hi everyone,

I am from Manchester, England, but at 290, (20 stone 10lbs) i seem to be the biggest of us from england :o(, but im working on it.

Ive lost 15lbs in the last 4 weeks so its a fair start and ive begun some exercising (even though severe medical condition hinders its progress)

For those of you that have a ' candy '  sweet tooth (not so much chocolate, as sugar), try eating lots of cherry tomatoes. U can eat a full punnet of them for 70 calories and they are soooo sweet right now.

Crazy.... I know, but dont knock it til u've tried it. :o)

Hi Sasha,

I would highly recommend an ' air-stepper '.

it is a structure frame with 2 hanging platforms that you stand on and arms levers to hold, then u swing ur legs in a walking motion and the levers for the arms swing backwards and forwards, but the genius being that the knees dont bend AT ALL, meaning no impact to knees.

I have terrible knee problems myself and it is the only gym equipment i can use without crippling myself for the rest of the week.

Good luck and hope this helps.

Hi cjeka,

im sorry to hear your having a rotten time.

I soooo know the feeling as I have a sensitive tummy and providing you have no fever or sickness, i would personally put my bets on the ' sugar free' foods especially if it is candy/gum, etc as they contain artificial sweeteners , ie: aspartame which is very bad for the gut, causing diarrhea in many ppl.

Many diabetics refrain from such foods even though they are often made for diabetics because of the nasty ' side effects'

I am in the uk so not sure they have this where you are but try getting hold of 'Imodium' which will help reverse the effects and if the diarrhea has been very often and severe try 'gatorade' to replace lost fluids and salt until symptoms subside.

Best of luck.

ty both for your replies.

I have started walking a little more each day, i walk an average of about 2 blocks and i even try to kick the ball around the garden for the dog for about 15 minutes (although only 3-4 days a week).

Most of the pain I get is in the knees, ankles and lower back, due to an auto immune disease which causes inflamation of the soft tissue which worsens with exercise.

I will try to stick at it although the idea of burning a piece of fruit a day still isnt very appealing, just doesnt have that ' I DID GOOD' feeling.

Hi helpmeouthere,

Firstly, i want to say congratulations on escaping the clutches of anorexia.

please dont forget that a huge part of anorexia is the ' control ' aspect, controlling the amount of food you eat, controlling how long it stays in ur body, control control control.

It sounds to me like you still have an eating disorder, the anorexia has left its mark in the form of an evolved form of itself.

You now know you must eat to survive and have fought hard to force yourself to that that (which must be congratulated) but you are now controlling how you eat in the opposite direction. Instead of how little you were eating, its now how much can you handle.

Its not unusual for anorexia/bulimia sufferers to develop other eating disorders during recovery and I suspect you still need professional help with this in order to fully recover and move forwards.

I wish you all the luck in the world and remember, you are strong, a fighter. It takes real strength and courage to fight anorexia the way you have.

lol, im not only eating cherry tomatoes, even though that would be kinda nice right, especially with the added chocolate idea from cjeka, lol.

judging by the info ive just seen on the world's healthiest foods website it looks like i might be adding another punnet a day though , woohooo. lol

I wonder why my body is crying out for these little red balls of sweetness. lol

im embarrassed to admit this but i havent managed to work out the grading on foods yet (puts hands over face).

Ive done a food log a couple of times but i never found a grading on it.

However, each 250g punnet works out to about 50 cals and rest assured, i never cover them in chocolate (but im liking the idea, lol)

i do exactly the same tracker.

I split the day into a small breafast (about 200 cals)

Mid morning snack (100 cals)

lunch (about 100-200, usually just a piece of fruit or two)

mid afternoon (usually 50-100 snack)

dinner (anywhere from 500-900 depending on hunger meal type)

Ive only been here 3 weeks but ive lost a total of 9lbs in that 3 weeks. I think as long as you eat enough through the day to keep ur metabolism burning, ur doing no harm.

Hi Sasha,

Ive always had problems with food, although i am very unlike you.

I am what they class as morbidly obese , mainly due to past medications but my way of dealing with that was to starve myself for days and then binge eat everything i could get my hands on for a few days. I piled on weight (much quicker than i would have with just the medication).

But i do understand how repulsed you can feel at the thought of eating, even now, im supposed to eat 1750 in order to lose a steady weight each week but i struggle to eat 1200 without feeling sick and convincing myself im  failing.

When reading your post the first thing i wanted to say was ' you are amazing. you are ' recovering', what an inspiration you can be to other ED sufferers. You are beating a killer sasha, remember that'

Secondly, the only advice i could offer is perhaps you might be able to substitute you meals slightly, how about trying to use a different bread other than weightwatchers (still a very healthy bread but with a slightly higher calorific value) and the slim-a-soup, how about exchanging for a weightwatchers or a slimfast soup (still low in calories and very healthy but not so low as slim-a-soups)

I truely hope this helps and honestly, you are incredible.

thank you very much larrylou,

your reply means a lot to me as you are proof that I can get there in the end and maybe it wont be too long away.

I have felt as though, if i slowly work on it and try and  build it up i might be able to climb a flight of stairs without puffing and panting by the time im 65 (30 more years)

I have just (today) won a bid on a elliptical cross trainer which i will be picking up tomorrow so (hopefully) i will be able to do a little time on that. (just hope my knees can stand it)
Weight Loss how much did you weigh at 18? May 13 2007

if i thought i had to weight the same as i was when i was 18 i might as well quit now.

I now weight 295lbs but at 18 i weighed 240, not such a huge difference really.

No way would i carry on if i thought 240 was my barrier, I want 140 and no higher. Perhaps im setting my sights a little high but ive been big since i was about 6 and before i die i WILL be (my idea) of slim.

So i guess that works for some ppl but for me that would never make me happy
Weight Loss Husband says that I am fine where I am (weight wise)... May 13 2007
18:17 (UTC)
Hi anxious,

first of all, CONGRATULATIONS hun, what an excellent achievement.

U must be a totally different woman.

I would guess that perhaps there are some insecurities going on with your husband but also im sure his heart is in the right place and he may even be right.

You say ur having skin removal surgery in august so how about going a little easier on urself until then. Im not saying blow the diet but maybe up your calories by a 100-200 and try to maintain or lose 1lb every few weeks. That way, you can see how things are after surgery ( at which point u may well decide you no longer need to lose any more weight)

At the moment it is the extra skin that is making you feel as though you still need to lose more weight, you could get down to 100lbs and you would still feel that way with the ' biggest you from the past' still clinging to you.

I wish you all the luck in the world for the coming months and hope you will keep us informed as the new you blossoms even more.

hi dbackerfan,

i have been looking into ellipticals on ebay recently. put a bid on a body sculpture one. lets see how it goes. wish me luck. lol

im with u on the shorts issue, I have 2 pairs of shorts but all ive ever done is try them on, never actually wore them , just incase someone calls around. I also wont wear anything tight and all my tops must be baggy and be long enough to cover my tummy and butt. ( talk about paranoid)

I see ppl as big as me wearing short skirts, tight jeans, clinging short tops and i wish i could be that brave. I guess it will come in time as the weight comes off.

I would definately say ' yes' as , just because you stayed in bed, that doesnt mean ur body will now use less energy than it would have.

Once you are up and moving, your body will continue to run as usual, burning the same amount it would have previously.

U may have skipped breakfast but you also skipped the activities you would have been doing before and after breakfast.

I would , however, try to split the calories, maybe have lunch and dinner and a small meal in between, or a few pieces of fruit to get the energy at its correct level.

thank you all for the replies( although i wondered where this post had gone to in such a hurry, it obviously has more energy than i do. lol)

suzigirl, no i dont have fibromyalgia (although my mother in law does and there are some similarities in the symptoms).

I have an auto immune disease called PBS ( primary biliary cirrhosis).

It is a fairly rare disease which affects mainly women in their 30's and is NOT (as some ppl would presume from the 'cirrhosis' word,) related to alcohol.

Basically my immune system is under the impression that my liver is a foreign object and so it constantly attacks it which causes many problems within the body.

I do have pains in my arms as well but no where near as bad as my knee and back which is why I use the swingstepper machine (no impact to knees ) but it works out my arms and thighs and is cardio vascular.

ppl have mentioned swimming and its positive effects with joints. The problem is i am so self consious about my size that I wont go near a pool. There are 30%BMI + swimming groups that friends have advised me to go to but I just cant bring myself to do ti. The fact that the other people there are as big as me makes me feel bad for them but it doesnt make me feel any better about myself.

Ive actually seen a Lateral thigh stepper advertised which is also described as ' low impact' and im toying with the idea of getting one (even though it wont make a very good coat rack , like the exercise bike i cant use, lol)

Thank you for the replies,

Plaidpooka the machine i mentioned is no impact on the knees, u stand on it and simply hold the arm levers and swing ur arms and legs, there is no knee bending at all so very low impact on knees for that one.

I am going to stick to my 5-10 minutes (maybe try doing it twice a day) and hope that things do improve.

I do some walking but not as much as i would like because of the swelling it causes on my knees but maybe in time that also will improve.

i live in hope.

hi dances, tyvm for the website , i will definately have a look on there.

My dad buys it online also but i dont know where from so i will compare the prices when i find out.

as for the water, i now drink about 4 pints of water a day, plus maybe 4 cups of tea and about a pint of diet coke (omg no wonder i slosh when i walk, lol) plus my pain meds are diluted into half pint of water 4 times a day so thats another 2 pints of water there.

Hey  dances,

Funny you should mention Glucosamine because my dad recently started taking that ( few months ago) and he said his knees are much less painful so I have been playing with the idea of trying it myself. Perhaps I should give it a go.

As for water intake, i now force (and i mean force) myself to drink lots of water every day (if nothing else it at least helps to fill me up) lol.

I havent been a member of cc for long myself, only since 30th april and ive lost 8lbs so far. Like you, i stumbled across the site purely by accident. I was actually looking up the calorific value of a smarties double lolly. (as well as lovely and sweet they have now lead me into a whole new world of friends and support)

So, from here on in, im climbing that mountain and holding the hand of anyone who wishes to climb it with me.

Hi dances,

sounds like you are on the right track and eating around the right calories for a healthy weight loss.

Im with you in respect to having dieted for a long long time.

Ive tried many different diets but cc is the only one i can see me sticking to for the rest of my life without feeling restricted in life.

i have a long way to go (thanks to long term steriod medication and painful joints which reflect on the amount of exercise i can withstand) but its a hill i will plod along until i can firmly plant my ' i did it' flag on top.

ive added you as a friend and hopefully will be seeing u around the posts. :o)
