I did it! :-D Ahhhh I could explode with happiness right now.

Last week I talked to him and he mentioned that he really wanted to see the movie Juno so I thought maybe I could ask him to see that movie. I went and gave blood platelets on Tuesday and the donor center gave me 4 free movie tickets to this theater that shows Juno. So I told him I had the movie tickets and asked him to see Juno with me. He said yes! So we're gonna go see the movie tomorrow. I always feel really awkward with formal dates. Should I just treat it like a casual outing with any friend or should I be suggestive about my interest in him?

I want to jump on a trampoline right now! :-D

Hmm actually I had some really bad abdominal pain too. I never get cramps during my period and always suspected other girls exaggerated their pain and didn't believe PMS was real. But when I took Provera, I had craps so bad I could hardly walk. I had to walk really slow but I thought the pain was worth it to get my period. I was also more irritable and less patient with people.... But after the ten days, I got my period on the 11th day, had it for 6 days, and now I feel fine.

Wow, thanks for all the advice everybody. I feel so embarassed for needing help with this. I don't know, I'm really mature and confident in all other areas of my life except when it comes to boys. I've dated but not because I was crazy about the guy, I've mostly dated for the sake of dating, because everyone tells me it's something a girl my age should do.

But this time, the guy is really special and smart. I get so excited to talk to him my mind just goes blank and I say nonsense stuff. But I'm gonna go for it! If it works out, I owe everybody who gave me support and the courage to do it. Well, it's easier said than done... I can see myself asking him to hang out and just stuttering and drooling or crossing my eyes. I got my wisdom teeth removed a month ago and the oral surgeon struck a nerve so I lost feeling in my chin and part of my lower lip. Everyone tells me I don't look weird when I talk but I feel self conscious about looking deformed or and talking funny. Maybe I'll practice in the mirror or on my dad. OMG I'm 21 not 11! D-d-d-d-do you wa-wa-wannna d-d-d-dooo something sommmmme time???

Thanks for the advice sun123 and hippieflower! I think I'm really insecure when it comes to dating. I always end up attracting creeps or idiots and I settle because I feel like I don't deserve better. I don't know why I have this notion that I can't be myself and attractive as a girl. Well, I guess from some personal experiences and also from my best friend and what she's going through right now.

My best friend is a 26 year old medical student and has never had a boyfriend. She is really fun and intelligent (obviously if she is in medical school) and speaks her mind. I admire her a lot and love hanging out with her. So we're both completely puzzled as to why she is still single. A friend gave her this book of rules of dating or rules for getting a guy and it's ridiculous. Basically all the rules emphasize being passive, taking up little room with body language, not laughing too loud, and always make the guy do all the work (pay for things, drive, make plans) in a relationship. It sounded like so much work and I wondered if dating is really like this. People always say to "be yourself" but you can't really be yourself right? You have to be considerate of some things and not offend people with your extreme opinions or bad habits.
Foods Lentils anyone?? Feb 15 2008

I use Indian spices to make Dal Lentil soup.
Boil 4 cups water. Add salt, 1/2 teaspoon tumeric, and 1 cup lentils.
Cook for 30-45 minutes or until lentils are soft.
Then in a separate pan, put 2 tbsp oil with about 1-2 teaspoon of each spice: turmeric, cumin, red chilli powder, garam masala and heat until there is a froth.
Add spice mix to lentils.
I love this because I love flavorful food and I feel like some lentil soups have lots of sodium and this is just spices and oil. I usually use canola oil but you can use oilve oil too!

maybe change up your excercise. I'm in the same boat! I'm 5'4" and 128 and want to get below 120 because I have a small body frame. When I plateaued I think my body got used to the cardio I did (I ran 5-10 miles every day). So I started doing interval workouts. I would go to the track and do sprints. I sprint the straight aways and walk the curves and do about 10-20 laps. Fewer laps if I sprint all out and more laps if it's a fast fast run. Also maybe you could try eating smaller meals like 5-6 small meals through out the day. This body builder who has low body fat told me that when you eat too much at a meal, your body only uses so much for energy and the rest gets stored as fat. Then if you go for a long time with out eating, you can activate starvation mode and when you eat a big meal again, it stores all the food as fat to prepare for longer periods of "starvation." But if you eat smaller meals, you will use it for energy and then tap into your fat stores and keep your blood sugar and hunger regulated. Well, I hope that helps. Good luck!
Weight Loss Sugar Feb 15 2008

I went through the same experience the end of last year. I put on 15 lbs because of sugar binges. Sugar is soooo bad. Not only is it bad for you, but the more you eat, the more you want it. So I decided for Lent (I'm catholic) I'm giving up processed sugar and carbs. The first few days were hard but now I don't crave sugary things at all and my mood and hunger is more stable. Last year I used to sit in class and think of chocolate cupcakes so much I couldn't focus on my lectures at all. I was not living a normal life. I thought I had some psychological problem that caused a binge eating disorder. It made me really depressed, the sugar highs and lows and my lack of control. But ever since I gave up sugar, life has been a lot better.

I'm taking a break from fruits because I've noticed they increase my cravings for more sweets but I plan to reintroduce them into my diet in a couple of weeks when I can eat them in moderation. Oh, hmmm if you want something sweet like to sweeten your tea or your oatmeal, I found this natural sweetener called Stevia. Unlike other sweeteners, this doesn't raise your blood sugar and make you crave more sweets. I don't know why it's not more known, I discovered it while watching this youtube video on Superfoods. It's supposed to be ten times sweeter than sugar but it has a slight bitter aftertaste. It depends on the brand you buy, some don't have a bad aftertaste. I got the Wholefoods 365 brand and I don't taste a bitter after taste in my tea but when I put it in my oatmeal I could but not too much. Anyway, giving up sugar is a really good idea. If you need some motivation, I found this great nutrutionist on youtube who gives good advice. Having knowledge about why I'm doing stuff usually helps me stick to it.

My doctor was most unhelpful but my roommate is a medical student and said that what my doctor is doing is called the Progesterone trial. I guess progesterone is a hormone that is released (either before or after our period I can't remember) but my doctor is testing to see what the cause of my lack of period is. I have to take it for 10 days and I guess if my period comes then it's because my body isn't producing estrogen and my doctor will just put me on birth control pills for estrogen. But if I don't get my period I guess they're going to have to investigate why.... But yeah, Provera is progesterone, a natural hormone our bodies create so I don't think you'll get cancer or anything. I hate putting chemicals and junk into my body too! I picture the toxic stuff making my stomache glow or something.

I'm taking a 10 day provera trial and I'm on my 7th day and have not experienced any side effects. I was thinking about looking up the side effects but I'm a very suggestable person and I'll probably assume the symptoms if I'm exposed to knowledge of them even if I don't actually have them. I was watching this informative video yesterday on youtube about menstrual cycles. It was an old video, probably made in the 70s but everyone kept saying really repetitive things to the interested young girl. One thing they kept saying was, "yes  Julie, all women get their periods." This made me really sad and feel like I'm not fully woman :-(

I'm recovering from an eating and over excercising disorder and right now I'm doing everything I can to protect my period potential. It was really hard to take a break from working out and to eat more food but I want my period back. I'm really worried about the long term consequences... I hope we all get our periods!

I took a health psychology class at my University and I learned that one way to change behavior is to first become more aware of why you're doing it, what are your triggers and the appropriate strageties to implement. I had a binging problem too. What I did was I would write down everything I ate, the food, the time and the amount. I would also write down what happens to me before I binge or how I feel. I realized that I binge when I'm stressed or if I go for a long time without eating. I also learned that because I had lost weight to impress this particular boy, after things didn't follow through with him, I started binging to cope with my frustration and saddness. So after I monitored with a journal, I was able to strategize ways to prevent binging.

I tried to plan my meals for the next day the night before so I would have no opportunities to binge. Also I was really negative with self hatred feelings after a binge so I made sure to write down how proud I was at accomplishing smaller goals. OH, that was another thing that helped me. Just saying "no more binges" was a very big and vague goal so I broke it down to smaller, more specific and attainable goals like eat 5 small meals a day, have sweets with one meal on Sunday, and eat vegetables with at least 3/5 meals each day. And when I accomplished my goals for the week, I made sure to celebrate by pampering myself or doing something to make myself feel good.

Well I hope that helps. I wish you the best!

I am going through the same thing. I greatly restricted my food and excercised a lot last year to lose a lot of weight in a short time. I stopped getting my period in January 07, eased off the diet over the summer and gained a little weight but got my period in August. I was soooooo happy to get my period. I wanted to shout from the roof tops. But then I freaked out about the 5-10lbs I put on and went back to dieting and stopped getting my period. I stopped working out and have been binging alot since October 07 and have gained probably 15lbs but I haven't gotten my period. I went to the doctor today and she did a blood test and gave me Medroxyprogest. Like you, I am very concerned about taking pills. My doctor didn't tell me too much information about the side effects and my other options. I tried to google it but didn't find much.

I was worried that I had polycystic ovarian syndrome because I've heard that can cause you to lose your period but if your doctor has been monitoring you then she probably would have checked that. I've also heard of people recovering from anorexia waiting a year or longer before getting their period. Anyway, I hope we both get our periods soon!
Health & Support Do I have an eating disorder? Jan 27 2008

I think an eating disorder is more than just your behavior or the number of calories you eat. It's how you feel about the food you eat- if you feel guilty or if you use food for control. If you have a healthy relationship with food and eat less on days you're not hungry or whatever, then I don't think you have an eating disorder.

I didn't have the best eating behaviors but I never thought about my food too much. I just ate when I felt like it or could like a normal person. But then I read somewhere about the symptoms of eating disorders and I worried that I had one. The more I read about it, the more I learned about the behaviors and symptoms. Then I worried about it too much and became obsessed with food or having a problem with food. I started to take on the symptoms I read about when I was stressed or felt like I was losing control. I kinda wished I never looked in to it or thought I had an eating disorder. Sometimes knowledge helps but it didn't in my case.

If you feel healthy I wouldn't worry but that's my opinion. Only you really know how you feel about food. Be open to other people's concerns but don't let people tell you who you are.

Health & Support Binging Realizations Jan 10 2008

Like many of the people who have posted, I used to be really restrictive with my eating and having that kind of control made me feel really good and together. So when I slipped, I felt so bad I didn't stop. I started with one or two binges a week a few months ago but over the winter break when I was home, I binged almost everyday. Not only do I binge but I'll think of the worse food to have. Even if I don't want it, my heart will race and I'll get shaky and stuff it down my mouth. I eat really fast, sometimes hardly swallowing. And I won't stop until my stomach is bloated and it hurts. Even then, sometimes I'll still munch on small things that I can't feel but will still do damage like chocolate chips or pop corn.

So for me, I think it's me getting mad at myself for "failing" when I start eating junk, then I continue to eat, stuff myself as a way to punish myself. Also I continue because I'm afraid to stop. I know once I stop, it will hit me and I will feel terrible. I keep eating to distract myself or postpone that realization.

So I think binging has something to do with control. When I start binging I feel a loss of control and I continue to stuff my face to assert control over my body? Like "body you're not hungry but I have control over you and will keep feeding you"

What I've done to prevent binges is I'll make a meal. Serve myself a healthy portion on a plate. Take my plate and leave the kitchen or the room with the food and eat my food some where away from access to more food. Then I'll eat my food and be done. Sometimes TV or people will distract me and I'll not think about going back to get more food that I don't need. Also, don't be so hard on yourself. Think positive! Pretend like you used to be 500 lbs and you've lost weight by being healthy so you're going to keep going. Set small goals and reward yourself after you accomplish them. For me I set a goal to eat 5 small meals a day and not to binge for a week. I have 3 more days and then I'm treating myself to a spa pedicure!

people have made threads about how its awesome to be thin. I've read threads where people list what they like about the new skinny them like seeing their collar bones, having a space between their thighs, etc. I'm just saying I struggled for a long time with trying to be thin and thinking I could only celebrate in losing weight. But now I'm trying to accept and celebrate having some flesh. I'm not saying its bad to be thin, I'm just saying I like that I'm chubbie.

I didn't watch it but my friend told me about it. I really don't understand how some celebrities could be so desperate for a thin body that they could torture themselves like that. I did a very extreme diet last year to lose weight and I was miserable. I had no energy, my mood was terrible, and I just felt so sick. It's funny how people lose weight to look "healthy" but some people make themselves sick trying to look "healthy."

Thanks everybody for responding. I just have this all or nothing attitude and set really unrealistic goals because I'm so desperate. Then I fail, feel frustrated and hate myself. It seems like everyone around me was losing and I was the only one struggling, which made me feel worse about myself but hearing all of your stories makes me feel more motivated. I just want to do it the healthy way and nothing extreme.

rufus_k, yeah I've heard that the average person gains 2lbs/day on a cruise but I've wondered if that is even possible. You would have to eat an extra 7,000 calories! The cruise companies must inject lard into the food or something becaues the volume of 7,000 calories sounds so painful in regular food.

schaufel, thanks for all your adivce. I never skip meals, I could never do that. My problem is I over workout... last year I used to work out for 2-3 hours doing different cardio machines at the gym. I don't want to do that again... it was really bad. I was feeling terrible yesterday but I feel a lot better today so I'm going to set some specific short and long term goals and start!

Weight Loss How to Prevent Losing Muscle? Jan 03 2008

Have you heard of carb cycling? It might be too much work but I found that it really maximized my fat loss without making me feel weak and I was able to build muscle too. Usually as long as you don't eat too little your body won't have to resort to burning your muscles but if you want an extra challenge for extra results you can try carb cycling. I found it on a body building website.

http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/par30.htm

Basically you have 3 days, Hi carb day (when you work out), low carb day, and now carb day (your off day) and you cycle them. On the days you work out, the carbs provide you energy for your workouts and restores your muscle glyclogen so your body doesn't tap into your muscles. Also, it will give your metabolism a boost and then on your low carb days, you will burn more fat. I did it last summer when I hit a weight loss plateau and I liked the results I saw.

vicki8seekers, thanks for your advice. It's also kinda hard because if my friend notices me "restricting" myself, he'll give me a hard time and say "you don't need to lose any weight" or "you're hardly eating, are you anorexic?" and I end up making excuses why I'm not eating much because he makes me feel bad for going on a diet. And it's also hard to exercise control with him stuffing his face or getting my favoriet dessert and telling me to try some. I was thinking maybe I should just pretend like I"m never available for lunch or dinner and we can only spend time together when we don't have to eat out...

Well, good job for going to the gym! Do you go reguarly or have you just started? Should we list like specific strategies for accomplishing our goals? I'm a college student and have access to a gym at my school but I'm home for winter break and won't be able to get to a gym until next Monday. But I'm so excited to get back! I'm kinda worried that it'll be packed with all the people who make new years resolutions to work out more.

jmccartha, you sound really frustrated. 50 lbs is going to take sometime to lose especially if you want to do it right and healthy. Personally, I always feel overwhelmed if I think about how much weight I have to lose in total and I feel hopeless but it helps me to break it down into small goals or set small realistic weekly goals to get me through the long journey. Reaching my small goals and seeing results also helps me stay motivated. My goal for this week is to keep a food journal and cut my craving for sweets (I have a huge sweet tooth) by not eating anything processed or with white sugar. I actually might not eat fruit at all since I've noticed fruit makes me more hungry and increases my cravings. I'm gonna make sure I have a lot of chopped up veggies and steamed veggies available so I don't resort to junk food if I get hungry. Anyway, everyone, post tips or your goals and strategies!

Yeah I think it's muscle too... unfortunately. It sucks because when you lose weight, I heard that the weight you lose is almost half muscle half fat and it's impossible to lose only fat. But when you gain weight from eating, you gain 100 % fat. :-( I worked so hard to gain muscle, then I went on winter break and didn't have access to the gym and now I think I've lost a lot of muscle and gained fat because I don't eat so well when I'm not working out.

Hi Amber,
I see you've picked up a few buddies already. Is it too crowded for me too? I was 142 this time last year, lost 26 lbs by the summer, then a good friend of mine who was going to school out of state transfered back to my school and last semester I ate out every single day with him and put on 10-15 lbs... I want to lose the weight but I also need strategies for losing weight while still eating out with my friend...? Or is that impossible? Should I not eat with my friend at all? fast food and soda. Everyone thinks I'm a health freak because I don't drink soda and want to throw up at the sight of fast food. But what most people don't know is I have the biggest sweet tooth. I've heard people say they get headaches or feel gross after consuming too much sweets and they get a "sugar high" or "sugar intoxication" but I have never gotten this and I have some pretty out of control sugar binges sometimes. I don't know what it is with me and cookies, ice cream, brownies, cakes, frosting, chocolate, fudge, toffee. I can eat and eat and eat sweets and never feel sick but soda pop will make my throat hurt and fast food looks like poison to me.
Weight Loss Holiday Gain!!!!!! Jan 03 2008

I gained holiday weight too... I can tell because my clothes are really tight and I'm pulling out my fat pants. I'm trying not to panic because that will make me stressed, do something extreme like eat 500 cals/day and then binge and go into a terrible cycle. So, my plan is to pretend like i haven't gained weight but I've been losing and to keep going. I'm trying to think positively, think thin because stressing about the weight gain will just make me feel defeated and lose motivation. My fat pants are still a little loose on me so I'm pretending that I used to be a lot fatter and I've lost weight and it feels good to have loose clothes and to keep going with the progress. Whatever you do, don't do anything extreme! 4 lbs isn't that much weight. You can probably lose that in two weeks if you just 500 cals less than your maintaince? Anyway, be healthy, the time will fly by and the holiday weight will come off. Take care of yourself!
