Thanks hkd_bear!

I'll look into the cycling clubs.  And I probably could ride during the year, but I use my mom's bike during the summer and I live in a different city during school.  Hopefully this summer I'll be able to get a bike to ride next year.

It's so exciting now that the weather's nice again!

Hi everyone!

I'm looking for some advice about cycling in general, mostly to increase my fitness level.  I'm in college, so from September to April I can't bike because of school (and biking in snow scares me!).  But now that it's summer I'm hoping to start biking a lot more.  Last summer I biked to work every day, about a 40 minute bike ride each way and it was awesome.  I use a Giant (not sure the exact type) hybrid bike and it's in pretty good shape.

Anyway I was just wondering if you had any tips for getting back into things?  I'm probably going to be biking 30-90 minutes a day starting next week, in a pretty hilly area.

Thanks!

SW: 180

CW: 165

GW: 135

I was always fairly thin and super-active, between 120-140 through highschool... And then I started college.  First year I gained 45 pounds, putting me up to 180 by the end of first year due to drinking + late-night KD, cafeteria food, and not being on any sports teams.  Over last summer (living back home with the parents and exercising + eating healthy + drinking less ridiculously) I managed to lose 20 pounds but as soon as I got back to school for second year I put half the weight back on.  Now that exams are almost over (5 more days!!!) I'm hoping to go back home and start exercising way more and eating properly.

Good luck everyone!

hey I'd like to join too!

I'm 19, started university two years ago at 135, had the freshman 15 times 3 and ended the year at 180.  Last summer I managed to lose 20 pounds but gained 10 back during the year with stress from school and such.

But anyway, now I'm 165 and would like to get back down to 135, hopefully by the end of summer-ish.

I try to go to the gym 4 days a week where I mostly run and do some really basic weights and such.  Now that it's getting nicer out I'm going to start jogging outside and hopefully start doing some real weight lifting.  I love chocolate, pasta, chips, and candy but am trying to cut them out completely since I can't seem to eat them in moderation at all...

2.3 miles for me tonight...

I've had a tightness/soreness in my ankles the past week that's SLOWLY going away, it's so frustrating because I was finally going to start running outside instead of on the treadmill and then the weather gets bad and I hurt myself! Oh well, better next week

 Happy running everyone!

2 miles for me

i had my first outdoor run since the summer (i've been doing all my running on the treadmill) and it was hard!  it's SO COLD and my lungs were burning like crazy... is there any way to get around that?  how does everyone who runs outside deal with that?  does it get better the more you run outside?

other than that it was fine, kind of relaxing actually

Thanks for the advice everyone, it was really helpful.  I think I'll slow down the pace for a bit until my body's more used to running... It just feels so great to push myself to go more and more distance every time.

3.1 miles from yesterday...

i am SO impressed by all of you who can run like 10 miles in one run!  i started in sept and got up to 5k at the beginning of october but whenever i try to run longer i end up with sore knees the next day, even running on the treadmill.  i'd really like to do a 10k by christmas, and be able to run more like 5miles regularly instead of just 3-3.5, but i'm not sure how to do it.  any advice would be great.

thanks!!

5.6 miles for me today, best run yet!

thanks for the tip on the non-cotton socks.  i know my feet definitely get that gross sweaty feeling when i run (it's inside on the treadmill so it's warm), which could definitely be causing blisters.

happy running!

I have the same problem as you with the blisters... with Asics too!  The only thing I've figured out to work is to just put bandaids over all the parts of my feet that are getting blistered.  Right now I'm going through a lot of bandaids lol, so another way to avoid blisters would be awesome
