Pregnancy & Parenting Pregnancy calories? Jan 11 2009

Thanks for the posts ladies!  I think I am going to get as many calories as I can in a day at this point with morning sickness...shooting for maintenance calories or about 2000 right now.  I sure can't keep the 1200-1300 I have been doing up.

Pregnancy & Parenting Did anyone have PCOS from insulin resistance Causing fertility issues? Jan 09 2009

I have PCOS and have tried everything from metformin (glucophage), Clomid (25 mg) trials and weight loss.  We tried for three solid years charting cycles and timing things perfectly.  To be honest...it was weight loss that worked for us.  I lost 80 lbs and finally regulated my cycle and got my periods back.  The Clomid and the metformin didn't work for us.  Again...we have been ttc for 3 years and I literally just found out I was pregnant on Tuesday.  PCOS is not irreversible!!!

You should also seriously consider having your partner tested for fertility issues.  We found out after 2 years that my husband has a low sperm count that was impairing our fertility as well.  He also took Clomid (10 mg) to increase his testosterone and lost some weight as well.  After our combined efforts...it took another year.  Good luck to you!!

The Lounge Poll: American Cars Nov 20 2008

36

Question 1: Do you own an American Car?

Yes and no...hubby has an 05 Chevy Cavalier and I have a 08 Scion xB (just bought!)

Question 2: If you do own an American Car, what made you choose an American Car over it's competitors?

Hubby bought it because it was dirt cheap off the lot...I think it was only $9500 brand new in 2005...special edition base model...no frills.

Question 3: If you do NOT own an American Car, why did you choose the car you chose over an American Car?

We just bought a 2008 Scion xB...a Toyota product, although assembled in the US

-better gas mileage

-best warranty available...lifetime powertrain

-great financing options

-no haggle pricing really appealed to u

Question 4: Would you buy an American Car right now, assuming you had the money and need for a new car?

Absolutely not...

Question 5: Why/Why Would you NOT buy American right now?

The very fact that they are likely the companies are about to go belly up...who will honor service contracts, warranties and the like for the lifetime of the new vehicle?  Aside from that, the workmanship on American made cars is commonly considered inferior and GAS MILEAGE...most American made are gas guzzlers!  We didn't even consider an American made car when we bought the Scion...nothing could compare to it.

Question 6: If you wouldn't buy American right now, what changes do you think American Cars would need to take before you WOULD buy American?

Improve quality and workmanship

Better technology and fuel efficiency!

The Lounge Why do people look down on community colleges Nov 20 2008

I think the most important thing about community college is shopping around to find one that best suits your needs.  I was taking some classes for fun at our local CC a couple years ago...sign language and spanish.  One day I got to class early and heard the tale end of a lecture the bio prof was giving on genetics...and it was the saddest things I've ever encountered.  He had absolutely no idea what he was talking about (I know this for a fact because I have a masters in molecular genetics) and was unable to answer any of the questions posed on basic Mendelian genetics a student proposed.  It was apparent he wasn't nearly up to snuff...

I think most basic classes are okay...English, history, etc, but anything science or tech related I would shy away from.  There is very possibly a reason that prof isn't doing there own research or teaching in an established program.  I would just advise caution.

You can also use milled flax seed as an egg/oil sub in case you didn't know...adds fiber and good fats!

I've got a six year old boy...and we are definitely on a budget....so I advise checking discount store for art supplies and such.  Who cares if the pad of drawing paper and marker came from Dollar General?  At his age, he won't notice.  Hit up places like Gabriels and Big Lots and Ollies if you have in your area.  They are a treasure trove of discount toys!

I second the above poster...anything superhero is an enormous hit.  My kid also is a Transformers nut, so throw that one in the mix as well.  Kung fu panda and Wall-e are just out now and there is tons of that merchandise around.  They definitely love what popular.

As a final thought...buy him dinosaurs!  Wal-mart sells great plastic dinos of all shapes and sizes in the toy dept for $0.88.  He could have a whole herd of dinos for under ten dollars.  The dinos are heavy duty...and every little boy loves dinosaurs.

Absolutely...thank goodness that people who were more than capable in the Clinton era are being re-established in positions of leadership.  I couldn't be more thrilled with the choices he has made so far.  I am also ecstatic that he is considering Hillary for the sec. of state.  This is definitely the change we need!

Health & Support birth control question Nov 13 2008
16:17 (UTC)

Yep...finish out this pack of pills and be done with them.  Above poster is right...its not good to stop in mid-pack and it will take awhile (sometimes up to a year in extreme cases) to get your cycle back to normal depending on what you were on and how long you were on it.

If you are stopping the pills because you are trying to get pregnant I would suggest a quick trip to the OB just to make sure everything is in working order and to get on a prenatal vitamin just to just start things off right.  If its not for a baby the doctor's visit isn't really necessary.

My son has very mild asthma symptoms through the summer, but the minute the leaves start to change colors, we are starting him back on inhalers, then progressing to oral steroids and usually then to nebulizer treatments every four hours...and on bad sets, the ER.  Last year he had pneumonia twice (Oct/Nov and May)...the pulmonologist says it very common to only have major symptoms in fall and spring, especially if you have an allergic trigger.  My son is allergic to dust and some mold spores as well.  But...in the summer, we take him off the inhalers and such entirely.  The pulmonologist calls it "bronchioasmonia"....his shorthand way of saying bronchitis, asthma and pneumonia...sounds silly, but describes our life to a T.

Congrats on the 175!  That is an awesome feeling.  I'm looking to see that number myself pretty soon...today I was 0.8 lb up though.  No good reason for it...but since then and through the day I have been feeling lousy.  I think I have the stomach flu coming on.  My body probably realized something was up before I did.  Yuck...now I have to get in at least 200 more calories and keep it down this evening.  I guess its peanut butter tablespoon time...geesh.

Not to defend anything in that article or getting in the mix too much here...but alot of you are talking a big talk...but I wonder if things won't change when those hypothetical kids you have yet to birth are actually here.  Everything has to be a balance...a balance of time (have you ever tried to get a 6 year old moving in the morning?), a balance of choices (would you rather have them starve or eat a toaster strudel...they will wait you out on this one...).

That said, I try my very best to give my child a healthy, well rounded breakfast.  But, I am also not above calling it a day and shoving a pop tart down his throat some mornings.  Honestly...I'll give myself a 4/5 stars for this one...sometimes you do what is necessary to get them, you and everything else out the door in the morning!

Sorry...sounds like asthma to me.  My son and I both have it and have very similar symptoms.  Are you sure that isn't the culprit?  I'd check with a pulmonologist just to be sure.

I'd love to get into this group too ladies!  I have another 20 lbs to go to hit my original goal.  I've lost 80 lbs so far on CC over the past 15 months and really want to be down to 175 by my 30th bday in February...I could definitely use some accountability and motivation.

So there's my goal...20 lbs by February, but I'd love to see about 35-40 lbs total come off before I try maintenance!

I am the mom of a kindergartener...so I am at the heart of this right now.  I am all for age-appropriate sex education.  I think that a general overview of "private places", correct and incorrect touching and strangers is just about right for this group.  My kid knows more than this thanks to lots of questions about his new baby cousin, but we took the parent role and told him what we felt he could understand.  But...alot of parents don't take the time to inform their kids about anything, let alone to respect their bodies and those of others that something has to be done.

But...as a side note, my husband is adamently against sex ed taught in school...so there is still a lot of debate left, even in this household.

I'm a Pittsburgh girl...so I'll throw my contribution out there...

1.  There are four seasons...the Steelers preseason, Steelers Training Camp, the "season" (meaning when games are actually played) and the post season, which runs from the Superbowl until NFL Draft Day.

2.  We all eat sandwichs with coleslaw and french fries on them (I so love Primantis!)

3.  Latrobe is pronounced LAY-trobe...and don't forget it!

4.  All the girls have Steeler hair...like the song "...colored gold and black..." (This one might be true...even I am sporting some pretty impressive roots at the moment.)

5.  The roads are better in the snow...potholes are filled with ice

6.  We all collectively drive to W. Virginia to gamble away our paychecks on table gaming...(this one is possibly true for my inlaws, but I think the state at large is safe)

At the co-op today a 2 lb beef roast was $27...the same one I bought at Wal-mart was $6.49.  With a family to feed, I have to say organic/grass-fed/free range isn't worth an extra $20.  That's fruits and veggies for the WEEK.

He may like you fat and with an eye-condition because he's worried that any improvements will make you more desirable to other men and that with all the extra attention you'll suddenly realise he's not much of a catch.

God love him...but my husband is the same way.  He loves that I am trying to be healthy, but he is uncomfortable with the idea of me becoming "even hotter" in his mind.  I sat down with him and talked about it...it worked and he is being much more supportive.  Try talking to him from a health prospective rather than a looks prospective.

Also...watch mentioning how helpful your friend is...that is threatening in the extreme...its not that you lie about it, just don't compare the two.

Bad news here too...the pouch is still there for me as well.  I am a good 40 lbs under my pre-preg weight now and its still there, looking back at me from the mirror.  I've tried lots of exercises, but nothing has really contributed to losing it.  While not for everyone...I am looking into a tummy tuck when I hit my goal weight and can maintain it for a year.

While not being vegan but understanding the ethical concerns they have over consumption...my take on it would be this: If you or your kid had a life-threatening food allergy (read as vegan) to something like peanuts (read as meat) would you allow any product made in a factory that uses the same bins to hold peanuts as flour?  If it were me, I stay away from it like the plague.  No matter how clean, some residual animal products/by-products would remain.  Hope that makes sense...JMO!

Vegetarian I Eat Fish Sep 21 2008

I have a six year old that decided to go veg*an about six months ago...but he still eats fish. I need my growing child to have adequate protein intake.  While he will eat beans, soy-based meats and other protein-rich foods, there is a limit to the palate of a child.  I can't exactly force nutritional yeasts and the like down his throat.

I understand the point that people make about diluting the word veg*an and making others question to the point of thinking chicken is veg...but on the same token, my child can't pronounce or explain lacto-ovo-pescetarian.  He is very forward about not eating meat and explains himself well...but the only way to keep the cafeteria people from slipping him a piece of chicken nugget is for him to use the word vegetarian.  That said...I understand why some choose the word...it allows them to attempt to explain what most people don't understand anyways.

Now some people are uninformed...my 72 year old mil swears she's turned veg*an using that insane Dean Ornish diet, but still eats chicken as well.  We have tried to explain to her, chicken isn't veg*an.  But, she is so desperately trying to make a health-conscience choice...and she honestly, truthfully doesn't understand that there is a difference.  So in the end...have a little understanding for those that are loosely using the term veg*an.  It may be the only way they can express or explain the moral, ethical or health issue they are trying to get across with their dietary choices.
