| I always make a spinach-feta-tomato salad and add whatever other veggies I have around, broccoli/cauliflower, etc. Then I toss on a can of beans, grilled chicken or some tuna. Avocados and olives are good too :) Use sun dried tomatoes if you dont have fresh- those are awesome too. Oil and vinegar dressing is best b/c it goes with anything ;) | |||

| Hello all :)
Sorry its been so gosh darn long since I've been on here. I've been crazy-busy with school and all... but now that I'm trying to lose a few lbs. I gained over winter I will be on a lot more :) Welcome, Thelonereed! Looks like you have some good goals there. Do you have a nickname that you prefer to be called? I dont really have much else to say... haha. Oh, I have a new cooking website though- www.ashleymakesfood.blogspot.com . Check it out if you like to cook, or just want to gawk at my yummy photos :) |

| Try eating some whole grains in the morning for breakfast or lunch, and then a couple servings for dinner also. Then by the time your body would usually be in "binge mode" after dinner, you have satisfied your carb needs. And you have a good idea going there also- I find that when I have sometime constructive to do during my usual "mindless eating" times, then I am much less likely to eat.
Chewing gum and drinking plenty of water helps too. And, this only works for people who wear them, but I always brush my teeth and put my retainer in when I want to signal my body that I'm done eating for the day. Keeps my teeth straight too :) Hope this helps, and please, don't starve yourself hon! |

| Pretty much what I love to eat right now- pizza, sushi, fruit, yogurt, salad (w/ full fat dressing & cheese/nuts/grilled meat or fish on top). Also ice cream, cookies, cake/pie anything chocolate... I have a ridiculous sweet tooth. Infinite stomach capacity would be nice too- I agree w/ _qwerty_. Haha :) | |||

| Hey Kristen, welcome to the club! Sorry its been so dead around here lately. Now that track practice starts for me soon (Nov 12th), I will probably be posting a lot more frequently.
The season ended for me Oct. 24, but since my team won Sectionals we get to go onto States (Top 10 only, there are 27 girls on the team). I was a littlle disappointed not to have made Top 10, but there is always next year (my senior year!) I dont think I would have made it this year even w/o my shin splints issues, as the #11 girl (our alternate) was a lot better than I could imagine running (her fastest 5K time was 22 something, mine was in the 25's) But with the seniors gone next year, I *might* have a shot. Speaking of shin splints, they r better with the season over and no running for a few weeks (yes, it does suck but I'm getting better fast- I dont have pain when I walk now and hopefully they will be completely healed by track- last time I only rested for 1 week and the pain came right back when I ran on the road). I also saw a PT this past THurs, and learned that the 3* scolliosis I've always had (at least since I was like, 10-12 yrs old, I'm almost 17 now) is caused by an internally rotated hip. And that, in turn, causes my shin splints- which is a SYMTOM, not a diagnosis. Ppl tend to think that everyones spints r caused by the same thing, but thats not the case at all, I've come to find. Anywho, I've talked wayyy too long. I'm just so excited that Westhill made States and I was there to watch us win sectionals! I hope we do well at States also! Wish us luck :D And also, I'm re-starting question of the week- new question: Who is doing track and when does your first practice/meet start? |

| Manda- YAY for you! Glad u joined XC :D You will have soooo much fun I promise. If you team is anything like mine :)
As for the whole nervous race thing- it was really bad for me too at my 1st meet, it was a big invitational and everyone said, yes they r all gonna sprint @ the start, so I watched varsity and it was just like everyone said, Then when I raced (I'm on JV) there were a TON of kids all bolting ahead and I really felt like I couldnt breate for about the first 3 mins... then it got better, and I ran a decent first race. My second race was a little better, and I hope I wont get as nervous @ my 1st dual meet tomorrow nite! I think it does get better, just set aside enough time to warm up, do some strides before lining up, and do a team cheer or something. And take a few deep breaths before the gun goes off- that helps to calm nerves also. Sorry for the lengthy explanation, I havent written in awhile :P Denne- welcome to the club! Best of luck with all your goals :D Feel free to email/PMessage me if u have any questions/concerns :) |

I totally agree w/ what you said abt. endorphins and all- and I think I am a little crazy. Haha ;) But thats not just b/c I run, I think its a perfectly sane sport- and very healthy way to de-stress and deal w/ emotions! I often run whenever I'm mad and I feel sooo much better afterwards. |

| GRRRRR I just had a massive post written. O well....
Anywho, I basically said that I run XC starting Aug 21, usually 7:30-9:30, later on Thursdays (we go till 11, as we take a bus to the park and run longer/harder- I went 75 min, abt. 7 mi yesterday). Usually we go 4-5ish, and then lift/stretch/do foot exercises after. WE had a 2 mi. timed trial Monday the 21, mine was 19:02- ok for me, b/c I've never timed except 1 mile, on a flat track- this course had 4 hills (it was a 1 mi. stretch, we did 2 loops). How long (time & mile-wise) do you all practice for XC? And when did you all start practice? Also, welcome- Jessica & Kylee! u both sound like rly good runners already, best of luck w/ your goals!! |

| Hey everyone, sorry I kind of let this thread die for awhile... but dont worry, I havent abandoned you! I just got back from the Cayman islands Sunday, and now I'm catching up on some stuff @ home before leaving AGAIN on Wednesday (tomorrow, actually!) Cant believe its already Tuesday (albeit early).
Anywho, I just had my last summer running a few hrs ago (make that 6) lol. We went over 5 mi, and I ran 9 mi total, barefoot on the beach in Grand Cayman. Theres a beach there called 7 mile beach, which is actually 6.7 miles long. lol. And that was where our timeshare/resort thingy was ;) Welcome, Vegetusgirl :D Awesome goal- best of luck in reaching it! I am almost to reaching my goal of 150 miles before official XC practice starts Aug. 20. Also, I have nearly completed another goal of mine- 60 volunteer hrs. at Crouse hospital! That was the min. requirement, but w/ my super-busy summer I am proud that I even achieved that. There is a party tomorrow for all us junior volunteers, cant wait for that! And tomorrow may well be my last volunteer day for ths summer, if I work the NY State Fair. Well, better go to bed now, gotta get up at 8am to volunteer!! :-0 <3 Ash |

| Hey hey hey its me... I am back from U. Maryland :) I ran only 10 miles tops while I was there, so I'm kinda out of shape (I did at least dance on 4 nites, & we walked ALL over campus, probly 3-4 mi/day)... I barely ran 2 at summer running tonite. Mostly b/c I was w. my friends who didnt want to run long, & b/c I am still chronically sleep deprived. (which is being made worse by long hrs. catching up on the computer) Lol.
Anywhoo... hows everyone else doing? moshin- I'm not sure what to tell you as far as starting back up, I sent u a PM... I'm sure I can help you but I need to know 1) How far (miles)/long(minutes)/often(days out of a week) you usually ran before you stopped, and 2) how long its been since you last ran regularly. If you cant really think of either of those, just time yourself at a mile or two miles and/or see how long u can run continously before u have to stop. Pheonix- Dont give up now! You've come so far! But I feel your pain, thats how I feel sometimes, when the weathers bad, or just dont feel like running... I just either think of how good I feel after, how running 3 miles is nothing when 1 used to be a challenge... or get some rly good playlist on my iPod. Also running w/ ppl is good- get together a group of friends. Or even just change your environment- running the same street, even the same trail gets boring after a while. Hope I helped :) Duckie- congrats! Even "only 2 miles" is great- hey, its what I ran just abt. every morining at NSLC. Every mile counts! And even if running 2 mi. doesnt improve your running fitness greatly, its awesome for your body- strengthens heart, muscles, etc. Keep at it :) Slyfox- Welcome to the club! I too, used to hate running. I was all whiny, "Why are some ppl so gooood at it? its not fairrrr!" Lol. but then I realized, o yea, they must actually run a lot to do that well- any thing takes work! Good for you, starting running on your own and keeping motivated! Its half the battle just getting out there & staying with it. Good luck :D Well, gotta go now- my bed is calling me. haha XD |

| Saroful- That is sooo NOT gross- I have a recipe for Thai chicken pizza, its just chicken tossed in a marinade of peanut butter (melt in microwave), soy sauce & lime juice, cook/chop it and sprinkle it over a pita thats spread w/ plum sauce... then put scallions & peanuts on top. Bell peppers ar egood too, chopped up... ooh, heres the original recipe, I only do the crescent roll crust if I have a lot of time and its for a bunch of ppl- you can kinda tweak the recipe :D

At first I was like, 30 mi? Thats over a marathon! But then I looked and saw that its your routine for getting back in shape. Wow, I am impressed- very organized! I wish you good luck in sticking to your workout and recovering to your prior fitness :) One more thing- as of today, after Summer running, I ahve officially run 100 miles! Thats 2/3 of my summer goal. Go me!!! Lol. I'm just glad to be so far in my goal with my busy summer... hope I can find a way to fit in fitness during my busy camp/vacay weeks! I will NOT ruin my hard work by making excuses like, I'm not at home so I dont have time, etc. I have come too far to slack off now ;) Well, now I REALLY have to go. Looks like either I'll be totally frazzled tomorrow, or I will be taking an extended nap in the car. Better bring my pillow! lol. G'nite all :) |

Glad to see that this thread is staying active, thats what I like to see ;) However, since I will be away for 10 days beginning tomorrow morning, I will unfortunately have limited time to post/read any messages there. So, if you have something you want an answer to right away, email me (ashley4314@aol.com) as my email is probably the only thing I will be able to check while I'm at U. Maryland (Nat'l student leadership conf. for medical/healthcare) Its a camp that my Sci. teacher nominated me for :) Anywho, onto my replies: Welcome, Ashalee! Its cool to have someone in the club who shares my name (pronunciation, at least, if not spelling) ;) Duckie- Awww... ur too sweet. I'm blushing over here :-* Glad I could help! :D Lol, its monsooning? Where in NY do u live? Manda- Great job! Youve already taken a huge step towards improvement just by getting out there- and good for you not to push yourself too soon. You'll get there in time, just keep at a comfortable yet occasionally challenging routine as your fitness improves. Aaugh... I'd better go to bed now, its past 1am here and I have to get up at 7 so I'm ready to leave tomorrow XD Hello, less than 6 hrs. sleep (for like the 4th day in a row) That cant be good. O well, @ least I can take a nap in the 6 hr. car ride! ;) Have a great week/end everyone! And keep each other posted on your progress, even if I'm not here ;) |

| Lozzle- Congrats on your longest run yet :D How far did u go?
I ran the most I ever had last nite w/ my XC team- about 6.5 mi! It took us over an hr. and I had to walk parts of it (I actually couldve gone straight thru, I think, but I wanted 2 keep pace w/ my friends Irene & Kate who dont like hills, so I slowd down) I actually do rly well w/ hills now, I have a huge one where I run everyday. But it took me a looong time 2 work up to overcoming my hill difficulties- so I feel for u and anyone who has trouble on them! Great job so far, and just keep plugging away, you will reach your goals before u kno it! :D |

| Hi everyone! Hope that last week went well for everybody, and that this week will be even better! Sorry I haven't been checking in as much lately, I am very busy getting ready for several trips/camps I will be taking (my first is July 20-29, I don't know if I will be able to go online much :(
Anywho, I see that we have several new members- welcome to Rou and Tropicana! How are your goals going so far? Manda- I agree, it is very motivating :D I go running with my school's Cross country team M-W-F at 6pm, and we usually go by this one guy's house, he always shouts "Go Westhill!" when we go by. My week went ok, but the pain in my left leg has now gone from my shin to my foot- probably b/c I overstretched my foot when I was stretching my shin (I had my toe pointed down fro 20 min. while I was sitting &talking!) & my coach said the top of the foot is a very sensitive area... plus I just ran 5 mi Friday, farthest I've ever gone :D :D We always take a few unintentional "breaks" to navigate thru the mini-jungle that is part of the wooded trail we take, lol- but I feel like that rest does not help- I would rather go straight thru. I'm hoping that my foot heals for tomorrow night, as it still hurts- despite the fact I took Sat. & today off :( Oh well, hopefully it will and this will be my last problem XD |

Heyjealousy- I haven't been running long enough for many people outside of my family to know I run (and we're all nutty anyway so running's nothing). Lol. But I do know what you mean- my friend Heather just started track this year, and discovered she loves distance running- she also likes running when its hot. A lot of ppl she knows think its insane she voluntarily runs more than wats required, but she rly likes it (and she got me into running also!)Heather will go run 8+ miles in the 80-90* heat! Now, that is crazy. At least to me- but maybe someday I'll work up to that and enjoy it as well ;) |

Maybe you could find someplace to run in the mornings, or some hotels have workout rooms. It takes dedication to get out there & exercise away from home, but u feel so much better the rest of the day- trust me ;)
Welcome, Lozzle! Don't worry, this club is an ongoing thing, nobody's "too late" ;) Good luck with your goals! Also, welcome Tangerine! Your goals sound good also, good luck :D And great job getting in shape/losing weight! Keep up the good work! |

| Lol, Manda- we're always on at the same time! That was rly funny tho, just now both our posts were at the same time :)
That reminds me- its a new week today, so I should put up a new survey question. For this week, I'm goign to ask... what time of day does everyone usually run, and is it the same as their fav time to run? For me, I'm kind of torn- I usually run first thing in the morning, that way I have energy for the rest of the day, not to mention the feeling of, "good- got that out of the way". And I can take a shower after and be all set :) But its also nice to run in the evening before dinner, as I have more energy for my run (seeing as I've eaten 2 meals already). The only time I dont like to run is when its really hot- but even then its ok if I'm running with other people :D |

Kscout- Thanks for the encouragement! Very motivating :D Manda- You're welcome :) And I agree w/ Bellamia- everyone starts somewhere! There is nothing lame about where you are right now. I was exactly at that point a few months ago as well, the 1 mile run for school was a struggle. I got a decent time for someone who doesnt run (9:40) but I felt so sick afterwards. Now for the first time in my life I'm feeling what its like to be in really good shape :) Don't worry, you'll get there- just keep plugging along! And finally, welcome, Avegloria! Good luck with your goals :) |

| Bella- Glad that I could help :)
Pearl- looks like you have a good routine going, godd for you! Its also great that you are seeing results already. How long have you been doing your crunches/pushups routine? I've read that your body gets used to the same exercises in a few weeks and hits a "plateau" (maintenance but not improvement/muscle growth). So maybe you will need to try some new things after awhile, but for now keep up the good work :D Manda- Probably pavement will be ok, you will likely not run very long for a few weeks (seeing as you havent run in about a month). It depends on what your body was used to before, did you run on a track, natural trail, or road? Also depends on how much strength your legs retained. Just start slow (a mile or two) and increase by no more than 25% mileage each week, and hopefully you will avoid pain or injury. Also, make sure your shoes are good, and you are running on a fairly flat road (bumps and up/down hill are especially hard on the legs & ankles.) And, last but not least, Welcome to the club, iheart! How are you doing so far this summer? Well, I'd better logoff for the nite- I'm going running tomorrow morning (probly around 3-4 mi.) So I've gotta get up early before it gets hot! |

| Bellamia- Dont worry- you'll get there! It just takes a lot of work and dedication. And 30 miles is still very good, a lot of ppl @ summer running last nite hadn't run at all since the end of track (early June)!
I think we actually have the opposite problem for running- you can go fast but not long (7:15 is impressive compared to my fastest of 8:40)! My endurance is decent, I've gone almost 5 miles before, but I'm more slow-and-steady. So, pretty much, I need to work on speed while u work on endurance! lol. I think hill running is good for building endurance, and I should try sprints for speed. :) |

| Hey guys- I just went to my first summer running w/ my school cross country team last nite- it was at 6pm, two groups of girls and one of guys. The boys ran 4 mi, I think, and the girls split up- I went with the 3 mi group (but I actually felt like I couldve gone longer!) and some girls went w/ the 5 mi group, and the coach. Also the coach gave me good tips for calf/shin problems, stretching/strengthening & all that. I'm up to over 60 miles so far this summer! :D And I even went to work out this morning too.
How is everyone else doing for meeting their goals? |

| raven, are you doubting that sunny is rly 13? Maybe she is just intelligent and health-concious.
I pretty much agree with what everyone has said on here... also you do NOT need to lose weight to look thinner/improve fitness, just exercise more and gain muscle. Also, to improve running time, build up endurance by running a LOT- it takes quite a bit of work. If you have any other questions, feel free to PM me :) |

| Thanks Bellamia :) Really the only tips I have for cramps is to ignore them and keep going, maybe slow down a little, but dont walk (I've learned that usually makes it worse!) If its leg cramps, stretch well beforehand- I can give you links of some good stretches if you'd like. For stomach/side cramps (I used to get these a lot), dont drink too much water all at once before running, space it out in the hour or so beforehand, and wait at least an hour after eating before you run. Hope this helps! :)
Welcome to the club, Bsho! Good luck with your goals, and as always, feel free to post or PM me if you have any questions or need tips! :D |

| Great job, BellaMia! Impressive mile time & great job biking too- thats probably the 2nd best cardio (along w/ swimming) I wish I could run that fast... oh well, I'll work up to it, bet I've improved already. And I think you will find that you build endurance quickly once u start running several times a week (as you are now). Is it mostly your legs or lungs that give out first, or both? For me it was always legs- still is, mostly calves.
My fastest time on a track was 8:25, but my treadmill @ home says I can run it in 6:20- I'm sure thats way off! Still, I have improved- I could only run it in 7:40 when I started using my treadmill this winter, the most recent time I'd run on a track then was the fall gym mile- I got 9:40ish. Well, I'm getting back into running this week... I went 3 mi at the canal on Sunday, then skipped Monday (Corning) and went 1 mile on the treadmill @ the hotel Tues- finally today I ran 3 mi. on my street- tried the whole running on ppls lawns, the gravel shoulder, etc. of the road so I'm not always on pavement. My shin hurt a bit when I stopped, but I iced it so I'll see how that is later- hoping I can get a run in tomorrow morning before summer running starts at 6pm. :) |
