Weight Loss Cabbage Soup Diet ? Jul 18 2009
20:44 (UTC)
4

I am on day 5 of the diet.  I cheated only a little by making coleslaw instead of cabbage soup -- I could not STAND the soup anymore after the first few days.  I have eaten lots...I've been hungry on some days -- day one was horrible, because I'm not a sweet person, I'm a savory.  Day 2 was just redundant.  Day 3 was actually easy since it was a mix of 1 and 2.  Day 4 SUCKED mostly because I'm not a huge banana fan and the soup was repulsive by then.  Me and my bf ended up segueing into day 5 at 11pm on day 4 because we were so hungry (made the "mistake" of having some nookie time and got super hungry).  Day 5 is going well. You can have up to 20 oz of meat.  I just went to the store and bought lean turkey (16oz worth) and made turkey patties stuffed with pico de gallo.  I cant eat the soup anymore, I think it's going to make me super sick (the taste is awful), so I'm using the cabbage to make coleslaw and only a tiny bit of miracle whip + mustard instead of mayo.  Instead of eating the soup (I gave it to the food disposal gods), I'm using the veggies in it to munch on all day.  It'll have the same effect, I'm guessing.

I'm so full now :)

And I went to the gym and was ultra productive.

I've lost 6 lbs.  I know a lot is water weight, but I think also some is fat since I've continued to work out this week (it was hard, but I forced myself).

Fitness Elliptical/Cardiovascular health?? Mar 30 2009

He comes in in jean shorts, skate shoes, wears a beanie, stares at himself in the mirror...pretends he's checking his phone.  Then he goes into the weight room (he seems to be on the same schedule I am, only his is much shorter) and lifts weights, but he's also floundering there.  It's silly looking...but optimism is sweet.

I hope I'm not repeating someone, but I'm too lazy to keep reading the same thing over and over.

Perhaps you're doing what I see a lot of people do...they assume that because they aren't overweight they are able to run fast on whichever machine for a long period of time.  There's a guy at the gym I go to that gets on the treadmill for about 3 minutes at a time, RUNS like HE_ _, and then hops off to catch his breath...then does it all over again.  He's a young guy, maybe 17/18, and thin, so I guess maybe he thinks his heart is in good shape too.  This is the issue with a lot of people that get discouraged right away...and the issue with naturally thin people.

Start off small.  Workout on the elliptical (or whichever machine you choose) but do it at a slower pace -- go as fast as you can but be able to hold a conversation after you stop moving without huffing and puffing.  It'll take time to work up your endurance.  Don't worry about resistance just yet, just get your ENDURANCE up (that has to do with cardiovascular health AND muscle strength).  Stick with that.  I started at 10 minutes, then bumped it up another five the next week, and each subsequent week.  Now I'm up to 45 minutes and it feels good.  I raise the resistance to keep my muscles and heart guessing and working.

Muscle strength training also will help.  The healthier and stronger the muscles are, the more willing you are to move for a longer period of time.  The better your endurance is.

Hope this helps :)  it works for me, so I hope if you try it, it'll work for you too.  The biggest thing is to BE patient!  Cover up the machine's time/weight/calorie counter while you run and just check it once in a while.

Fitness Does anyone huff and puff on the elliptical? Mar 30 2009

Maybe you could raise the resistance and keep your speed the same.  That's what I did last time I was on the eliptical and it made me huff and puff.  The thing is, running where there's a lot of bouncing (outside and on a treadmill) will make you huff and puff more than an eliptical because you're not bouncing around as much.  I always find it a lot harder to run outside than on the eliptical because of this (and because my calves aren't quite toned for it).

*yawn*

there are so many posts like this, including one from way back that I posted (so I'm not innocent of this crime!).

Eat something that has high calories but is still healthy -- nuts are a great addition.  A handful will get you 150 cal with some nuts...190 with macadamias!

I do the same as others...I eat a really light breakfast (usually a big apple) at 7:45, a snack at 10:00 (100 calorie pack), lunch at 11:30 (usually about 300-400 calories), another snack at 4ish, then dinner I'm pretty free -- I watch my portions and then IF I have extra snacking to do (calories) I'll have another fruit OR something "naughty".

I've lost 4# since the beginning of May, but since March I've only lost about 15.  This is a natural and healthy weight loss though, so I'm not disappointed...and I've messed up (over ate some BAD things but they were so yummy...) a few times and I also drink on the weekends...I just work out a lot most of the time.  Lately I've been directing the Musical and working 14/15 hr days at school (I'm a teacher).

Anyhow, I've lost an ince in my hips, thighs, and tummy and waist (I do a "belly button" measurement in addition) but not lost a # in two weeks.  So...that's cool, I guess :)

This has nothing to do with taking doors off hinges.  Teach your children to do the right thing and make the right choices.  I disagree totally with doors off hinges.  Teens DO need SOME privacy.

Now, on the other hand, if they've got a friend or group of friends over, the bedroom is not the place to hang out.  Unless you've given them a reason to hang out in there (computer, tv, phone, radio, etc that's not available anywhere else in the house).

Other than that, all you can do is educate them and teach them to make the right choices.  And oh yeah, practice what you preach.

I did the same thing last night.  I fully intended to eat a bunch of ice cream, but I went into the veggie drawer and instead grabbed a bag of baby carrots and went to town with a little bit of light ranch veggie dip.  I was FULL within only a few carrots and I didn't want the ice cream (my tummy didn't, even though I would've loved to taste it).

Emergency binge drawer, veggie drawer...they work wonders.
Weight Loss More Energy!! May 18 2007

I definitely have more energy now that I work out more often.  As a matter of fact, I hadn't been to the gym since Saturday because I have been doing a lot of overtime at work (I'm a teacher, but I'm "directing" the musical so I've been at school 8 - 9 lately).  I began feeling SUPER tired AND (this makes no sense) I couldn't fall asleep easy when I actually laid down to go to bed.  I believe it was because I hadn't been working out.  Today I worked out at the gym and it was hard to get my ass there, but now I feel better and I can feel my natural melatonin kicking in at 8pm, like normal.  I also am perky again.  I was starting to get really bitchy.

So yeah, I think working out + losing weight = more energy.  Put a 5 lb weight in your hand and walk around with it.  It'll wear you out.  THink of that as 5 lbs on your waist!

I think it was 1950 with the setting at highly active (I usually go to the gym for an hour -- elliptical for 40 min and then weights).  Then I walk at night after dinner when I can.  Lately (for the past Friday - today) I haven't been able to do much because I've had rehearsal until 9pm.

I think I have enough sugar though.  Especially if you count the carbs.

I did something similar leiann.  I bought an iPOD (250$).  I then said to myself (to justify having bought the darn thing) that for everytime I went to the gym, I justified 5$.  Well...they say that after 30 times of doing something it becomes "habit."  The gym is now a reward to me.  Yeah, I have days that it's hard to get there -- I'm tired or just don't feel like it.  But once I get there, I'm happier.  And to top it off, paying myself back for having bought some piddly electronic device has lost me 13 lbs!

Well...I think a lot of what people forget is that you should strength train as well.  Are you EATING more when you work out?  That could be backfiring on you.  If you are justifying a donut for a 30 minute walk/run on the treadmill or elsewhere, you could be sabotaging yourself.

Also -- muscle burns fat faster.  So get some strength training going on.  I just bought the new Reebok StayBall (it's a stability ball) and the workout on the DVD that comes with it is pretty darn good.  It's a 30 min. video that's easy to follow and I'm pretty tired (but not gonna skip my mile outside).

Maybe you should "up" your workout to 4 -5 days a week.

All of this I said is in the assumption that you're counting calories and doing a fair amount of cardio.  I'm also assuming that you've already heard/read the whole "starvation" argument...so I won't go off repeating what everyone's probably going to say!

Just keep working.  My father asked me this the other night:
"Do you FEEL healthier?  That's all that matters!"

Hey, try this:
when you go home, offer to cook dinners!  Look up healthy and FUN recipes...things you can grill.  Give them bigger portions and stick to your guns.  Unless you're a homebody all the time, it'll be fine.  I know when I would come home for holidays and summers my parents LOVED when I cooked for them.  Especially since they're super busy.  Besides, they paid a ton for me to be in college.

Other than that...walk outside a lot.  Don't be afraid of the heat.  I've just learned it.
If you go out, do what bb123 implied/said:  pick out things prior to going out.  A good thing to do is to order FIRST so you won't be swayed (I read that in a fitness magazine).  Look up the calories in meals (a lot of rests have these online somewhere now).
You'll be fine if you're truly trying to lose and you stick to your guns!

No way, you need to crunch...that's my thing.  Like someone else said above -- you obviously have a large purse to hide goodies in (a movie purse...I have one!) SOOOOO pop a big bag of the smartpop popcorn or the 100 calorie bags...one should do ya, or two if you're super munchy.  That's not a bad bit of snacking.

Anyone else have ideas?

That's been my motivation.  I wish I could say I've lost 15 or 20 lbs since March, but hell...I'm just glad I'm losing any at all.  And I'm glad I'm working out...I'm glad I'm getting healthier and I'm glad I'm FEELING healthier.

Give it as long as it takes to see some difference.  Don't add a huge amount at a time, just a little bit here and there...and handful of nuts'll (sorry, 14 yr old boy must've just rubbed off on me HAHAHA) give you a 100+ calories.  Macadamia's are super high calorie in the nut category.

Be patient...see...judging by your last post, you ARE making progress!  Besides..think of how maleable fat, especially tummy fat, is.  Those pants may have been making you look a bit like a sausage then (I had that look for quite a while -- boo) and now you're looking more hour-glass.  Give it time...you're doing this the healthy way instead of crash dieting and that's the good thing.  It'll come off.

Yeah, same goes for most.  The first time it sucks, but I think the back pain is different...I had a bad cramp the first day but yesterday it was easier.  The only thing I notice is how HUNGRY I was afterward and how little energy I seemed to have -- I ate plenty that day (almost too much), so I just thought of it as me being on my TOM and having to push through it.

I hate TOM BOOOOOOOOO.  ahah

Take this into consideration (because I had this same complaint).

Just how TIGHT were those clothes before?  It's hard to remember, but I remember having to literally do lunges and stretches and stretch my clothes -- I was even afraid to put them in the dryer and would wear pants two or three times for the sake of them stretching out.

So think about that... :)  That might help.  Just keep on keepin' on and don't give up.  That's what I have to keep telling myself.  It might take a longer amount of time for some than others, but...*sigh*...it's a lifestyle change for me.  So I just take it in stride.

I have to do my cardio BEFORE I go into the gym to lift.  I've lifted prior to cardio a few times but I just find that I'm noodl-y if I do that.

Does it really matter either way?  I stay on the elliptical for about an hour and then lift for maybe 30.  I figure, either way I'm burning calories and getting more fit.

So does it matter??  :(

No way!  Work out!  If you are too tired, ok, then do what you can.  Don't use your TOM as an excuse.  Currently (warning: tmi) I'm on my TOM but I'm still working out hard.  You DO have to eat just a LITTLE more because you use more calories when you're on your TOM.

Besides, as silly as it sounds, if you have horrible cramps like I do it HELPS with cramps to work out.  So does potassium (eat some 'nana's!).

Good luck this time.

My general lifestyle is this:

I'm 178lbs (down 11 from when I started working out in March)

I'm 5'1

I'm a teacher in high school -- I don't do a lot of running around during the day.

BUT!

I work out 5 - 6 times a week for AT LEAST an hour.  I do combinations of elliptical (vigorous, I push myself) and light weight training on machines.  So, I don't consider myself sedentary, since I only take off one or two days a week at most -- and even on those days I do calisthenics at home for at least a half hour (sit ups, lunges, crunches, and pilates-type things).

Hey girl,

I lived with two dancers during college.  Both were terribly thin.  BUT...the BEST dancers at ECU (where I went) are NOT terribly thin.  They're actually very MUSCULAR.  I think what you need to do is work on your own body image.  You should concentrate on toning, lengthening and making that muscle you gain lean.  I think, from the sounds of it, you're only concentrating on that "fat" you think you have.  Look at it and say, "I'm turning you into muscle!"  Muscular dancers (that have the lean muscular bodies and flexibility) are WAAAY more visually appealing AND they can control their bodies better.  Dancers that are just plain skinny...well...they look too skinny and they can't control their bodies as well.

That's just what I've learned from living with dancers for two years.  I hope that helps.

Maybe pilates?
