| Thanks Muttlover...I've been on that site several times, but that link was an incredible source of info. Women need 18grams of iron a day...and I'm only averaging about 6-10 grams. I'm not a vegetarian, and I feel like I'm eating many of the foods on the "High Iron" list. In any case, thanks. |

| Fitness | elliptical calories - HELP!!! | Aug 24 2007 11:39 (UTC) |

| I too got so frustrated at the lack of accuracy, that I went and bought a Heart Rate Monitor. It tells me exactly how many calories MY BODY burns while exercising. It's still based on an algorithm, but all the variable data comes from my specific stats...so it's bound to be the most accurate of all three. |

| I"m allergic to egg yolks and should be carrying an epi-pen. I wouldn't trade this allergy for anything, as it keeps me away from all that I love. Granted, I still find ways to eat non-egg sweets, but at least they're a bit lower in fat, cholesterol and calories. Do you have Celiac's? |

| Weight Loss | Daily Calorie Expenditure | Aug 23 2007 02:39 (UTC) |
|
| Thanks Shiptona. I'm 32 y F, with no children. I'm not quite sure what to make of all these numbers yet, but I do know I trust my body. I'm thinking about experimenting with various calorie consumptions to see what feels right. Do you think that the people you collect your calorie data from may offer a skewed depiction of what the nutrition or medical literature says. If they were mostly from 'weight loss' forums, then I would venture to say that many of them strayed towards the lower ends of what would be acceptable for fear of gaining. I don't know though, I'm not familiar with your sources. But if a reputable HR monitor uses an algorithm based on my specific stats, I feel somewhat confident in that. We'll see. I'm going to give it two or three more rounds to obtain an average daily expenditure. Then I'll up my cals slowly if necessary. |

| Foods | Low Water Intake | Aug 22 2007 12:09 (UTC) |

| I swear by using only water to decrease my weight. I'm not thirsty throughout the day either, but I just keep a bottle handy and sip, guzzle and taste all day....right on up to 2 liters. Not only did I immediately drop about 5lbs (which is really noticeable on my petite body), but I found that my metabolism is faster, and my skin requires no makeup. It's a really powerful dieting strategy, if nothing else. |

| Measure it all out and log it into the recipe analyzer. Hopefully you'll get an accurate read on what you're about to eat. Then you can tag that recipe and when you make it again, just be sure to use the same amounts that you listed. |

| Fitness | HR Monitor for 24 hours??? | Aug 22 2007 11:30 (UTC) |
4 |
| Well, my 24 hours is up. I've worn the Polar F6 for a full day to try to get an accurate measure of my daily calories burned. Do you think this is a true caloric expenditure, based on my actual stats as opposed to that of an equation? Can I use this number (which is far higher than CCs number) to track my daily food intake? I hope so!!!! |

| Fitness | when is the workout working out? | Aug 22 2007 03:03 (UTC) |
2 |
| From what I've been learning, the efficacy of a work out is not measured by how exhausted you feel, but in how long you keep your heart rate at a certain percentage of it's maximum rate. The fact that running has become easier for you is a good sign, because it means that your cardiovascular system is more in shape. I don't know if you always need to up the ante...but it's a good question. I'd imagine that your heart rate can only go so high, and once it's higher than the aerobic amount, then you're going into the anaerobic zone which is helpful for stamina, but not really necessary for health benefits. I'm no expert on this though, so I'm tagging your question to see what other responses you get. Good Luck. |

| How many cals are you all eating? For weight loss? For maintenance? Also, how often do you exercise? I'm eating between 12-1400 on good days, and try to exercise 3-4 days per week for 30-45 minutes. |

| Calorie Count | Not letting me add my foods to my log! | Aug 19 2007 22:06 (UTC) |

| Same here. I've tried several different things, but I'm still not able to add any food to today's log, on both CC and CC Plus. When I try, it goes through all the same motions, even saying "Food Successfully Added to Log", but then nothing shows up. For now, I'll keep writing it down. Hopefully it will be fixed soon. |

| Fitness | best way to use elliptical | Aug 16 2007 23:11 (UTC) |
|
| I recently read that too much 'bounce' when doing the elliptical is considered bad form. I'm not sure what that means, because when I'm on it, there is a good bit of bounce in my step. I am kind of jogging, except the pavement underneath my feet moves to accomodate my step. So, looking in the mirror, I'm kind of bouncing with each forward move. Anyone know what is considered bad elliptical form? |

| Foods | please help...chicken breast weight before/after question | Aug 12 2007 20:13 (UTC) |

| DM84...I knew you'd find this posting. You were very helpful in conceptualizing it all for me a few days ago. But, alas....I still want to weigh after I cook because that is what I'm actually eating. So, it's true that 4 oz cooked is the same as 12oz raw? And when I'm logging, I need to always log the raw weight? AAAHHHH... |
|||
| Foods | please help...chicken breast weight before/after question | Aug 12 2007 18:43 (UTC) |
12 |
| This is tricky, but if there were 4 chicken breasts and 12 servings @ 4 oz each...then there was a total of 48oz/package. Divide that by 4 breasts and you get 12oz/breast.....or 3 servings/breast. So yes, I do believe you had 3 servings. It seems outrageous that a breast would lose 8 oz of water during the cooking process. And, if it is really just water, who cares? Isn't that more reason to weigh it after it's cooked? I've always been confused about weighing meats. I know this was no help...but if it's any consolation, I would log in 4 oz of chicken breast, because that is what you consumed. What does it matter what it weighed before you cooked it, if that's not what you're going to metabolize anyway???? .....ahhh my own personal soap box. | |||
| Health & Support | From Cigarette Addict to Part Time Smoker? | Aug 10 2007 11:59 (UTC) |

| You guys rock!!!! Thanks so much for your insights, stories and encouragement. I know I can't be a 'social smoker'...I don't even know why I would want to be. I often think it would be nice to kick back once every month or two and have an all out cheat day....good food, good wine, and good old nicotine. I don't know if I could limit it to just that day though, and the consequences of not being able to, are not worth it for me to try right now. I'm definitely committed to being a non-smoker. But this ultra healthy, no-vice life requires more accountability to myself than I sometimes wish to have. Can't I bail on it every now and then???? See how the addiction is so sneaky and manipulative. Anyway, thanks again for your inspiration. I'm tagging this one!!! | |||
| Fitness | Tailbone pain from spin class? | Aug 09 2007 23:33 (UTC) |

| I broke my tailbone 14 years ago. I have never been right since. Sitting at odd angles causes intense pain, and I often need to use my arms to lift my body from the sitting position. The exercise bike is typically a bad choice for me because of this. Each time I've done it, I've suffered the consequences in my tailbone. Did you ever have a significant injury to that area? If so, perhaps there's some painful scar tissue that's getting in the way. | |||
| Fitness | Yoga vs Pilates | Aug 09 2007 11:57 (UTC) |
5 |
| Ahh...the pain of a lateral dislocation. I feel for you. It's happened to me close to a dozen times, in both knees. I bet if I did a squat now, your computer would rattle at the sound of my crunching scar tissue. Anyway, if you have access to a pool that would be helpful. I've been doing daily exercises to strengthen my quad muscle. They were recommended by a physical therapist friend and actually seem to be increasing the muscle mass that supports the patella. Also, try the elliptical at the lowest resistance....but not until your fully healed. Or maybe walking on the treadmill. To answer your question, I think pilates would be a better choice. It's geared more towards physical toning and definition, as opposed to yoga which emphasizes breathing, balance and inner harmony. You need to get your ass in gear....yoga may be too relaxing/meditational at this point. I'd recommend any video from the Pilates Institute. They are fast paced and you'll definitely see some muscle definition within three weeks....guaranteed. Still though, you need cardio to burn calories. I wish you all the best in your recovery. Maybe try to see a physical therapist to help learn how to prevent this from happening again. Once a patella has slipped, it is much more prone to do so again...unless you maintain your muscle mass. Good Luck to you... | |||

| Thanks everyone. I just got back from a moderate 35 minutes on the elliptical and about 15 minutes of stretching/crunches etc. I felt great while my heart rate was up, but am starting to crash again. I'm not sneezing or coughing, just really under the weather. I did wipe the machine down though and take extra care to use a towel. Thanks again.... | |||

| Foods | question about PB2 | Aug 07 2007 22:17 (UTC) |

| My shipment was delivered today....5 days from Georgia to NY.... and I'm happy to report that it has a pretty decent flavor. There is a lack of richness to it, but I assume that's just a lack of fat. It will take some getting used to, but it can be done. Tonight I'm mixing it into Fat Free Frozen Vanilla Yogurt for snack. Anyone else have any positive or negative comments about PB2? | |||

| Foods | Oatmeal, please recommend one for me | Aug 04 2007 01:54 (UTC) |

| Yup.....the big tub of Quaker Old Fashioned is what I have for at least one meal a day. I take my oats with either a microwaved apple, cinnamon and walnuts....or with a banana, almonds and 1 tbsp of mini dark chocolate chips. If it's breakfast, it keeps me satisfied until at least noon. And, I agree, the instant stuff is just that...instant. Takes a second to cook, takes a sec to metabolize. Then you're all carbed out and starving. | |||
| Foods | do you guys miss ice cream? | Aug 04 2007 01:52 (UTC) |

| Every night I have 1/2 cup Breyer's Fat Free Vanilla or Light Chocolate with 1 TBSP Hershey's Light Syrup and Fat Free Whipped Cream. I'm a sugar addict, no doubt, but I stop at the serving sizes. This dessert is only 125 cals and satisfies all my daily urges. If I exercise, I'll add 1 warm deep chocolate vitamuffin to it....for 225 total. This may be causing my plateau, but I've only got one shot on earth and I really enjoy these sweet moments. | |||
