Great article, thanks for the link.

The NUMBER ONE way to get rid of the pain is to AVOID IT IN THE FIRST PLACE. and what do I mean by this?  KEEP EXERCISING AND DOING WEIGHTS REGULARLY. you will only get these 'really severe' DOMS if you slack and don't do muscle building every few days. the MORE you work out the LESS you get doms.  now that's a fact :)

Agreed.

But also: aspirin! Works for me, although the internet does seem to be of the opinion that ibuprofen is better. Aspirin, though, is something I always have on hand.

I wouldn't mind trying a class but a) I'm not a fan of the music and b) I... really just can't dance.

It's a super popular class in Mexico, though, there's seriously Zumba on every corner... I'd been wondering if it's hit elsewhere.

I love sushi, I'd eat it every day if I could. I like both sides, real japanese food is usually tastier, and I love anything with eel or salmon in it. But I don't dislike 'unauthentic' rolls and stuff either. Yeah, california rolls aren't that great, but the restaurant I usually go to makes some really creative and unabashedly mixed-cuisine rolls and dishes that are fabulous.

I went to Japan some years ago and the food was amazing. Only once I had some sashimi I just couldn't get down, even though I made a huuuuge effort. It was some kind of squid-y thing, all slippery and rubbery and impossible to chew, in these long, shiny strips... I don't even remember what it tasted like, it was the texture that I couldn't manage. Sigh.

my fave genres are death metal (insomnium, amon amath, opeth) dirty south rap (trae, z-ro, paul wall) orchestralmetal (therion, haggard) and psytrance (my fave is infected mushroom). oh and i like chill. these genres have been in high rotation for a few years.

so much music so little time...

I love Haggard. I saw them a few months ago and I'm seeing them again in december. They're my absolute favorite band along with Rammstein.

I like various types of metal. Lots of symphonic and melodic stuff, I'm not that into trash or similar. Folk metal is awesome, viking and pirate folk metal doubly so.

Also some minimal and progressive, some indie and/or folk stuff and old 60s and 80s music, especially old rock-ish stuff. Awesome and a bit hilarious.

I don't know, I take my protein powder straight with only water on gym days.  I think of it more as medicine, and by that standard it tastes pretty good :).

I've also heard BSN is tasty, though I've only tried their chocolate. I'd say buy vanilla first, so you can mix it up more easily if you don't like the taste. If you DO like the taste, next time try chocolate.

Just remember to introduce it into your diet gradually, start with just half a scoop and then move up. Otherwise, if your body isn't used to it, it might cause you digestive problems.

Go to the gym! If you're at a healthy weight but there's something you don't like about your body, chances are losing weight, like some people advised, won't help. Time to start exercising, I think.

Huh. Well I'm a nerd and a geek and anything else you want, and I agree, I thought it was very lame. If it's full of cool tech-y robots and hot girls, why did they have to ruin it and make it all corny and boring and stupid?

I went to see it with my true epic nerdy friends (as in those who own transformer toys) and nobody liked it. Maybe we're snobby nerds, but we agreed it relied way too much on dumb comedy and epic boob slow motion.

I don't see it. Perhaps you're surrounded my mostly white people, and thus it seems that way to you? Like, you said, the area you live in?

I'm in Mexico and it's really worrisome to see how many girls here have obvious eating disorders, and I think it's going up.

Of course, there's like this whole thing where, despite being all proud to be Mexican and yay our heritage and stuff, we (mostly subconsciously) idolize blond, blue eyes, skinny Americans and Europeans. So that may have something to do with it?

Either way, if you watch TV, commercials, look in magazines, go to the movies, the girls look the same in every country.

Health & Support How do gain but loose?? PLEASE HELP! May 19 2009

Well, what everyone's said already is true, you can't really choose where you gain weight, but there's something I can tell you from experience.

When I was gaining weight after ED, I had a relatively big stomach compared to the rest of my body, because I was eating more than I was used to and my stomach was expanding and stuff. I was annoyed and unhappy at first when I couldn't button up my old pants. But once I reached a healthy weight it evened out again, and now I can wear my old clothes again. Not the tiny-tiny-ED sizes, but yes small-normal sizes, I even have some size 0 jeans that were big on me at my lowest weight, then I didn't fit into then while I was gaining, and now I can wear nicely.

If it's any help, while and after I gained weight I did BodyBalance and BodyPump, and almost no cardio. Those classes helped a lot because they build muscle.

Basically, if you reach a healthy weight and do some exercise, especially strength stuff while you're gaining, your body will sort itself out. Worked for me, at least.

Phase 5. One more to go.

Mexico City update. By now almost everyone I've talked to knows someone who got it and/or died. A classmate of my sister's apparently got sick, but he's ok now. From the description I heard, it seems pretty nasty. In the press conferences they keep changing the numbers, the updates they're supposedly giving us are becoming more and more confusing and pointless.

I think ridiculous is a bit harsh, but of course none of us are probably informed enough to say. True, the media are going all crazy and stuff as usual, but I think there's some severity to the issue. They don't cancel school and close restaurants and concerts and mass and restaurants for the normal flu season.

At any rate, my family has decided to err on the side of precaution.

Bad news- The death metal concerts I'd planned to go to in two weeks are likely to be cancelled. Godd thing I haven't bought tickets yet. Sadly, it'll probably be a while before they come back.

Good news- No work! Group fitness classes cancelled at the club, so I'm out of a job for a while. No school, no work, lots of time and zombie movies.

Thanks for the replies. Sorry to alarm you guys who didn't know about it. Whoops :)

safina- About the produce issue, I hadn't actually thought of it. I really don't know, you could probably ask some health organization/official? So far I think there haven't been any fatal cases in the US.

andie- The scary bit is, all the people who have died are actually young adults, not kids or elderly. Something about how if you have a stronger inmune system it backfires? I'm not sure, I think CBC had an artivle. Of course weak defenses aren't much good either. Also, there's no vaccine yet. The one administered this flu season protects against one component of the virus, but is in essence ineffective, and so far there is no vaccine here in Mexico or anywhere. What we do have are effective drugs, at least enough for one in twenty in Mexico City.

v-avila- Good point about the air. A friend of mine always says she's never felt the need to smoke or inhale anything funny, it's the same as walking down to Xochimilco nad breathing in the fumes :) This is in a way the ideal place for something like this to break out.

Ah, well. Lately, as in the past couple of months, I've been really into apocalyptic fiction and read all those Susan Beth Pfeffer books where a comet or something crashes into the Moon and moves it out of it's orbit a bit and there's all these climate changes and the food runs out and there are floods and stuff. (There's two books, really good actually, anyone read them?) And I just bought some new zombie movies and stuff. It's just kind of funny... coincidences O.o

Ah, well. Everyone in the house has calmed down, thus I am feeling better. At worst I'm in for a very boring week, I hope.

Now I'm scared. So far I've enjoyed Mechanics, Collective Phenomena and Electromagnetism, but those sound scary. The other day I saw someone grading Quantum Mechanics homework and it looked terrifying... and that one's obligatory.

This is actually a really fun thread to read.

For me, Calculus. II and III... and probably IV when I get to it. I'm actually really into Electromagnetism and I loved my intro to Thermodynamics. It's the Calculus proofs I hate, not the applied Calculus. Ugh. Then again, Differential Equations is kind of meh, too.

Foods How to make porridge/oatmeal Mar 12 2009

My favorite:oatmeal in a blender!

Put 1/4-1/3 cup dry oats with about a cup of milk in blender. Let the oats soak there for about 5 min so they soften. Turn on blender, whizz for a few seconds until it's nicely blended. Pour mixture into pot and cook over stove until it thickens to a pudding-like texture. You can add vanilla or cinnamon or anything you like.

It tastes JUST LIKE CREAM OF WHEAT! Which is awesome, because there is no such thing as cream of wheat over here. Plus it's like, healthier or something. :)

Young Calorie Counters What do u do when youv'e eaten badly all day? Jan 29 2009

I just have a bowl of All-Bran and lots of water before going to bed, to make sure the unhealthy/excess food doesn't cause me problems or leave me bloated the next morning. And then just go back to plan like it never happened.

If I cut down or restrict the next day, I either just feel guilty remembering why I'm doing it or wind up hungry and craving. So the only 'making-up' I do is the extra fiber to cleanse my system.

The Lounge "Obesity Tax" Dec 18 2008

I don't think it's such a bad idea, honestly. Obviously sugary drinks aren't the only cause of obesity, and yes there are skinny people who drink soda, but that doesn't make it a good choice even for them. Why not?

Personally, here in Mexico I find it infuriating that soft drinks are often quite a bit cheaper than water - it just doesn't make sense. Since tap water isn't that great, it's very common for people with lower income to drink soda with their meal on a daily basis. Heck, I've even seen mothers giving their babies coke. It would be GREAT if that tax came to Mexico City.

That actually sounds really good! Sort of like hummus egg sald with spinach...

I love beans, especially mashed, but they're too calorie dense for me to eat them alone and be satisfied. So I'll grab whatever steamed/boiled veggies we have on hand, like broccoli, add it to beans, cut it up or mash into small pieces with a fork, add curry powder and mix. It's the best thing ever, but my family says it looks gross.

Oh well. Also works with cauliflower, chayote, mushrooms, green beans... yum!

Oooh, haven't been here in a while. I guess i'm feeling in need of support.

Funny, about naming your ED. I just had a breakthrough a few weeks ago, we were talking about something or other and my psychiatrist said something like "... you have to remeber, this voice in your head, this being that's always at your neck, IT DOESN'T EXIST. It's in your head, a part of your head. It's not somebody else." Man, that was liberating! Whatever works!

Beh, I'm feeling depressed and ...dare I say... fat? There. I'd feel so stupid saying that to anyone in real life. I'm 110lbs, dammit! I'm healthy! Ugh! I'm mad at myself, because I can't stop bursting into tears over anything. It's end-of-semester stress, I know it, it makes me crazy.

Foods Ever had a dream about food? Jun 12 2008

I had a bread dream too! When I was visiting Europe there was just so much bread, especially at breakfast. I was with a school group on a budget, so we'd hide bread from the buffet and eat it when we were hungry. I had a dream one night that I walked around the hotel and every room was filled with bread. Then we started doing this bread dance thing...

Like others, I'd have eating dreams when I was all OC, and woke up feeling sick and panicked because I hadn't planned to eat that.

I remember one time my Mom made brownies at night and I didn't have any. I had a long, detailed slow motion dream of how I bit into a brownie, felt every layer of texture in my mouth, every degree of flavor, every smell... I swear the entire dream was like one bite. It was kind of weird, actually.
