| There are a lot of things you can use to bake with! Just look around the internet for "vegan cake" "vegan muffins" "vegan cupcakes" etc etc. I just made THE MOST AMAZING Chocolate cake EVER. All my omni family loved it! A few of the things you'll find: Ground flax seed- can be found in a regular grocery store, possibly. Ener-G Egg Replacer- A name brand thing that will most likely be in a health food store. A powder you mix with water that turns thick and sticky. (No taste) Other binding substances used in baking: Bananas, apple sauce, soy milk, silken tofu, agar agar (plant nectar- used for sweetener too), maple syrup (which was in my chocolate cake). Mmmmmm, now that I'm vegan I bake WAY too much. It's horrible! :D |

Alcohols sometimes have isinglass, blood, gelatin, all sorts of animal by products in them! It's pretty sick... http://tastebetter.com/features/booze/type=li quor If you go down at the bottom there's also Vegan beers and wines. |

| Vegan, wish I was freegan (but I would only eat freegan-vegan food, I know freegans who'll eat dumpster cheese and meat and NO WAY I would do that.) The main reason I wish I could be freegan around here is I worked at a grocery store in the produce section and they waste SO much! It's sad! If I could, I'd be able to sneak out bags of broccoli they were throwing out because it had little yellow spots. Same for bagged spinach, perfect apples with small bruises etc. It's so sad, our super markets pay such a high price to make the food look abosutely perfect. (Supermarket Secrets- a good documentary about this very thing! Search for it, I know you can watch it free online somewhere.) Unfortunatly, around here I'd starve if I was a freegan because the supermarkets use a compactor that's nearly impossible to get into from the outside. |

| I wasn't saying 60 is a huge amount, I was saying it was a recomended amount not to be over or underdone. 90 grams of protien in a day, however, is a huge amount only because I wasn't assuming the persons wieght to be 250+. |

| Vegetarian | Vegans eat refined sugars?? What about eggs, are they considered dairy when they dont come from a cow? | Nov 27 2007 22:31 (UTC) |
2 |
| jmc1221: Refined sugars aren't an animal product, they're just sifted through a bone-char filter. Dead animal bones. Honey? Honey is from bees, and they are an animal last I checked. About the egg thing, the industry labels it under "Dairy". Supermarkets and everything do the same, haven't you noticed the milk and eggs are always together? It's just a stupid industry habit that has got a lot of people confused. Of course eggs aren't diary, they're just unfirtilized, overgrown eggs. ... ew. |

| Suddenly upping your protien intake will wreak havoc on your system, because it's not used to it! Go gentle and slow, and eating more protien wont feel as bad. ALSO. Your nutritionist says 90 grams?! Are you 6'5" 300lbs? That's too much. The RDA for protien is between 40 and 50 grams, perhaps even 60 if your a large guy, but 90 is sickening. Here's the equation to find out how much your personal body needs in grams of protien. Please use it. I'd also question your nutritionist and tell her what the RDA's are and ask why your reccomendation is SO high! Is she a Registered Dietician or only a "Nutritionist"? Here's that equation. Use it! :D Weight in Pounds / by 2.2 = Weight in Kilograms Weight in Kilograms x 0.8 = Daily recomended grams of protien. I hope this helps. ps. I'm not some insane person who thinks she knows all about nutrition. I'm studying it at college as BA (to hopefully become a RD) and this is all fresh in my mind. :D |

| You'll have to give us more info. What brand? What are the ingredients? If it's essentially fake honey (with no honey actually in it), then I'd say yes- it's probably just flavored sugar-syrup. | |||

I do think the egg is for binding, but I also think the beans would do a good job of binding as well, if they're cooked and kinda mashed for the recipe. Ground flax seeds and water is a good binder as well. Oh! I'd also say, perhaps add in a tablespoon of flour to hold everything, that would work nicely! |

| At first, when I became Vegan, I was super gassy (not embarassing to me, :P) and bloated (uncomfortable!) because of all the new veggies I was eating, beans, hummus etc. After a while my GI adapted and I'm no gassier than normal! It took about 3 months. :P | |||

1) why did you become vegetarian/vegan?
I'm vegan, mainly, for health and animal rights- in that order. I believe that animals have a right to life and that humans do not have a right to enslave sentient beings and slaughter them for our taste buds. 2) has being vegetarian/vegan improved your lifestyle and overall health? how so? Oh yes. Becoming Vegan has made me 10x healthier than before. Thanks to Veganism, I'm getting my BA in Dietetics! I'm very health concious now, not only for myself but for everyone. 3) how long have you been vegetarian/vegan? Only 8 months! :D 4) any health reasons for doing so? Nope. 5) list any health-related issues (pros): Vegetables are so health for you I can barely contain my excitement! I love them and those who eat them! I really can't say much else about eating Vegan. Oh, anyone who cuts dairy out of their diet is healthier than those who eat it, I promise. Dairy is a killer. 6) list any health-related issues (cons): When being a vegan (and possibly a vegetarian) one really has to be deliberate... You can't be a junk-food vegan and get away with it! If a vegan knows nutrition, understands the bodies need for nutrients (all kinds) and knows what foods to get certain vitamins and minerals that are known to cause problems in vegans, everything will be a-ok. 7) any extra comments... VEGANISM ROCKS!! woooh! |

| smartash (nice name), we're on the same page. Cleanses and detoxes are a bunch of bull. Our bodies are perfect machines and do a grand job of cleaning themselves without aid of fasting or intestinal cleansing. I did the master cleanse too, and now that I've re-directed my major to a BA in Dietetics, I realize how dangerous it is. |

| Vegetarian | Why do vegans want meatlike products? | Nov 13 2007 23:10 (UTC) |
21 |
|
Personally, I grew up on a very meat-based diet and I liked the taste and texture of meat. I gave it up for ethical and health reasons, but I still like that "meaty" texture every once in a while in the form of seitan or fake ground beef for tacos. And YES there is a huge difference! Fake meat saves lives! Or at least, fake meat isn't someone's dead body! |

| It's the definition of the term. While vegetarians don't eat meat for the reasons you listed, vegans go further to shun ALL animal products (yes, fish!!!) because we believe using and murdering animals IS WRONG. You don't believe that. You are not a vegan. You eat fish, you aren't even a Vegetarian!! You're just a plain omnivore. It's people like you who ruin our name, not us. You are not vegan and every vegan on this planet will hate you for calling yourself one. Please stop calling yourself vegan. /endrant |
