Original Post by hotharmony:

We recently started solids with our 6 month old, and we are doing Baby Lead Weaning following the book Baby Lead Weaning by Gill Rapley.

Basically we give our baby the same food we eat in large chunks so he can feed himself, it's super messy but he will learn to feed himself and I don't need to worry about buying him jarred food.

I encourage checking it out.

We are inadvertently doing this with our child.

When she was around 4-5 months, I started off making her homemade baby food.  She just wasn't that into eating pureed food from a spoon.  But she would grab at any food that we were eating.  She was able to chew it despite not having any teeth.

So we started giving her little bits of what we were eating and I also steam or boil fruits/veggies especially for her.  It only took a few times for her to master chewing, even without any teeth.  She has been able to pick things up and put them in her mouth since she was 3 months.

She hasn't been given any nuts, meat, eggs, or dairy yet.  We will give her meats and egg yolks in the next month or two.

Even though she doesn't have any teeth yet, she does great with chomping on cheerios, goldfish, toast, pasta, fruits, veggies, and any other food we allow her to get her hands on.

Being able to feed her finger foods makes it a lot easier and convenient since we are on the go quite often.  I just have to make sure to bring a couple changes of clothes and plenty of wipes for when she makes a mess.

Original Post by szaffyka:

So, when I calculated my basal metabolic rate (BMR) I took into account my age, gender, height, current weight and I also measured my hips(80 cm), thigh(48 cm) and my upper arm(27 cm), according to the recomandation of this site www.kulinarisvilag.hu.  And it come out that my percentage of body fat is 46% which is extremely high, while the normal rate is 13% for women and my muscle weight (LBM) is only 27 kg...Cry. Then taking into account my pure muscle weight (27 kg) my age and gender I calculated my daily BMR at this site www.medifat.hu  and I find out that it is 890.328 calories/day.

At the beginning of my diet (two months ago) I've been on a 1000-1200 calorie diet for a month, and then due to a minor injury I had to stop doing workouts for a while and that is why I've cut down my calorie intake to 800-900 calories per day. After recovering I started again doing my workouts even increasing the intensity of them. I also tried to increase my cal intake but every time I eat a little bit more (about 1000 cal per day) morning when I weigh more with 200-300 grams. That is the reason why I'm so scaaarrred and sceptic about increasing my calorie intake...

How can I increase my calories to around 1100-1200 calories and still continue to lose weight at least NOT gain weight?Embarassed

You are 5'2.5" and weigh 106.4lbs.

A healthy weight range for someone your height would be 102.5-138lbs (46.5kg-63kg).

How much weight are you aiming to lose?  You are already at the lower end of the healthy weight range.

It is difficult to get your body fat percentage based on a calculator that only takes three measurements.  I find it hard to believe that you have 46% body fat at your height and weight.

A better way to find out your body fat percentage is:

  • Go to a gym and have them test your body fat with calipers
  • If you can find a place that does DEXA (Body Fat Composition) testing or Hydrostatic Weighing (Underwater weighing)

I'm not sure where you got 13% for the average body fat percentage for women.  The average adult body fat is closer to 22 to 25% for women.

As for only losing .5lb a week, the closer you get to your goal weight the slower your weight loss will be so that sounds about average.

You should raise your calories to at least 1200 calories on your inactive days and increase your calories 200-300 on your active days.  Remember that your weight naturally fluctuates day to day and you may see a slight increase on the scale when you raise your calories but your weight will level off after a few days.

The most important thing is being healthy, not a number on a scale.

Can you please provide a little more information???

You mentioned that you have a slow metabolism.  How did you go about finding this out?  Did you consult with a doctor and what kind of tests did he perform?

Did a nutritionist put you on an 800-900 calorie diet?  Or did you decide on this number yourself?

I ask this because very rarely does one need to be put on a VLCD and this is usually under the direct supervision of doctors and nutritionists.

Also, being that you are on the lower side of the BMI scale (according to WHO standards 18.5-24.9) there is no logical reason for you to be eating so little especially given your activity level.

So you are around 5ft tall?  Are you trying to lose weight, maintain, or gain?

Here is a calculator for teens: http://www.kidsnutrition.org/bodycomp/bmiz2.h tml

I entered your stats and got the following:

"A 60-inch tall, 95-pound, 18-year-old girl has a body mass index (BMI) of 18.6, which is at the 14th percentile for age. Although being thin could be perfectly normal for this girl, she could potentially be at risk of being underweight, particularly if she has recently lost weight or has stopped gaining weight.

A healthy weight range for this particular girl would be from about 95-pounds to 131-pounds."

Since you exercise a half hour almost everyday, you should consume around 1760 calories a day.  On more active days, you should increase your calorie intake.

Please note, that as you get older 95lbs will no longer be in the healthy range for you.

Question, for calories burned, aren't we looking for calories burned during our  workout minutes?

Therefore, if we don't exercise and record the minutes we don't get points for calories burned, is this right?

Correct.  You can only earn points for your calories burned during workouts/exercise.

It is each member's responsibility to report their information either daily or weekly at each weigh in.  Without the information, I will not be able to award any points.

To answer a few of the questions:

Original Post by jmalone1989:

How long does this challenge last?

The challenge will begin on January 1, 2009 and as of right now will last for 6 weeks.

I may extend the challenge depending on the number of members still wanting to participate after 6 weeks but it is up to you if you wish to continue to participate.

Original Post by sarah1383:

i would also like to know what are the dates for the challenge and are there any prizes for winners?

Sorry, there are not any "material" prizes awarded.  Only the satisfaction of reaching your calorie, deficit, and fitness goals as well as points earned.

You are more than welcome to set "rewards" for yourself based on goals reached or points earned.

Original Post by keb1984:

Question: to earn points for cal def, cals burned and exercise minutes, do we report that information daily??

It would be helpful if you could report the information daily but it is not necessary as long as the information is provided at the weekly weigh-in.

In order to earn points for your calorie goal being reached (within a 100 calories), you will need to provide your calorie goal the day before or at your weigh-in for the week following.

Question... will we be taking our starting weight beginning on January 1st?

Yes, your starting weight will be your weight on January 1st.

Young Calorie Counters is this really the right amount of calories? Nov 02 2008

Hi Braindamage13 ~

Did you know that Calorie Count's tools are not geared towards teenagers?  The tools on this site are only aimed for adults (20+).

This website has a great calculator for teenagers:
http://www.kidsnutrition.org/bodycomp/bmiz2.h tml

I entered your information and got the following for you:

A 64-inch tall, 100-pound, 16-year-old girl has a body mass index (BMI) of 17.2, which is at the 8th percentile for age. Although being thin could be perfectly normal for this girl, she could potentially be at risk of being underweight, particularly if she has recently lost weight or has stopped gaining weight.

A healthy weight range for this particular girl would be from about 104-pounds to 143-pounds.

1640 Calories - Inactive (Never Active)
1960 Calories - Low Activity (Less than 1 Hour a day)
2250 Calories - Moderate (About 1 Hour a day)
2750 Calories - Very Active (More than 1 Hour a day)

You mentioned that you walked everywhere, you are more than likely moderately active if not very active.  How much do you walk a day?

Since you have lost a little bit of weight eating 1900 calories a day, try raising your calories to 2250-2500 calories a day.  It may sound like a lot but if you concentrate on eating healthy, calorie dense foods you can easily reach that number.

Also, it is not good to compare your eating to your friends eating.  Since you are not with them 24 hours a day 7 days a week, there is no way to gauge how much a person is actually eating or if they are eating a healthy amount.

Maintaining Will a "cheat day" kill me? Oct 18 2008
22:44 (UTC)

What have you set as your daily calorie target?

Since CC's calculators are not geared towards teenagers, I used this calculator to get the following information:

1900 Calories - Inactive (Never Active)
2250 Calories - Low Activity (Less than 1 Hour a day)
2580 Calories - Moderate (About 1 Hour a Day)
3120 Calories - Very Active (More than 1 Hour a Day)

Since you said that you are going to remain inactive today, you still have an extra 790 Calories before you reach your maintenance calories for the day.

It takes an estimated 3500 calories to gain one pound.  So unless you plan on eating an extra 3500 calories on top of your maintenance calories, you are good to go.

Make sure you are taking in enough calories on the days that you row.  You are probably losing weight so rapidly because you are very active and not taking in enough calories to supplement your activity.

Enjoy your "cheat day".  Smile

    When_I_Fly_I_Look_Down ~

Right now, at 21yo/5'4.75"/100-105lbs, your BMI ranges from 16.8 to 17.6 which is classified as underweight.  A healthy weight range for your height would be 110lbs - 148lbs.

There are some people (not many) who are naturally underweight but they maintain on much more calories than required for the average person (ie. 3000+ calories a day).

How did you reach your current weight?

Did you diet to get to your weight now or have you always been this weight?

How would you feel about gaining another 5-10lbs to reach a healthy weight?

Have you discussed with your doctor or better yet a nutritionist or dietitian your weight and your daily calories consumed?

If you are a server, ride your bike everywhere, and do strength training it sounds like you are at least moderately active if not very active.

If you were to gain 5-10lbs and reach 110lbs, your BMR would be 1339.12 calories.

To calculate your Daily Calorie Needs you would use the following calculations:

    1. If you are sedentary(little or no exercise) : Calorie-Calculation = BMR x 1.2 (1606 Calories)
    2. If you are lightly active(light exercise/sports 1-3 days/week) : Calorie-Calculation = BMR x 1.375 (1841 Calories)
    3. If you are moderatetely active(moderate exercise/sports 3-5 days/week) : Calorie-Calculation = BMR x 1.55 (2075 Calories)
    4. If you are very active(hard exercise/sports 6-7 days a week) : Calorie-Calculation = BMR x 1.725 (2309 Calories)
    5. If you are extra active(very hard exercise/sports & physical job or 2x training) : Calorie-Calculation = BMR x 1.9 (2544 Calories)

So, essentially, you would need at least 2000 calories a day to maintain your current activity level.

Young Calorie Counters Who Wants to be Skinny, Anyway? Oct 11 2008

    Original Post by slb537:

In my mind, I really want to be stick thin, only because I feel like. if I were skin and bones, I would finally view myself as "beautiful". I think I'm so disgustingly fat and have always thought that of myself. I'm afraid that no matter how skinny I become, I'll always think I'm fat. However, even though I don't think I'm skinny, I'd love for other people to tell me I look disgusting[ly skinny].

I know that's really complicated, but its just how I feel.

    Sara ~

You are currently within a healthy BMI (based on your profile) and your goal is within a healthy BMI range as well, so that is good.

Why do you feel that no matter what, you will still feel "fat"?

Often times, it takes people time to adjust to their new bodies after losing weight to see the true results that other people see.  Usually these feelings go away for most.

For others, they may develop Body Dysmorphic Disorder

    http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/body-dysmorp hic-disorder/DS00559

    Definition

Body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) is characterized by an excessive preoccupation with a real or imagined defect in your physical appearance.

People with body dysmorphic disorder often have problems controlling negative thoughts about their appearance, even when reassured by others that they look fine and that the minor or perceived flaws aren't noticeable or excessive.

Have you talked to someone about the way you feel?

Wanting to be told that you look disgustingly skinny is something to be concerned for even though your goals are still within a healthy range.

The reason why a lot of people choose to concentrate on building muscle versus losing weight is because one pound of muscle will take up less space than one pound of fat.   (example

You have been given a LOT of great advice on how to up your cals.

How did you do today?  Are you actively trying to increase your calories?

The more active you are, the more calories you will need.  So if you are running more, you will need to up your cals even more.

Calories = energy.  Without the calories, you will not have the energy needed to maintain your current activity level, eventually it will catch up to you and not in a good way.

Have you discussed your eating habits and exercise regime with your parents or doctor?  If not, then you should and soon.
