Health & Support Am I to old to lose weight? Mar 21 2008

Check my profile for more details, but in a nutshell I'm 53 and just lost 100 lbs. So I think that you can probably get in shape at any age. 36 is FOR SURE not too old!

Good luck with your weight loss - and remember to WALK.  If you do nothing else, just walk.  At first it might be hard - don't push it.  Take it easy and slowly increase the time and distance.  After a while (perhaps a couple of weeks to a month) you will find yourself increasing the distance and you'll start to feel better, and the pounds will start to come off. YOU CAN DO IT!!!

If you step on and off a digital scale 3 or 4 times you may see that your weight changes by as much as 2 pounds.  I always take the lowest number - it sounds like cheating, but I've always taken the lowest number from day one, so I think it all averages out.  If the batteries are getting low in the scales, the fluctuation may be greater.

If you're really obsessive about weighing yourself every day (like I still am) then get on and off the scale a few times and see if the number changes.  I've found that moving the scale to a different position on the floor can make the reading change.  The botom line here is that day to day changes in weight are not something to panic over.  Look at the long term changes.  Your weight loss graph has that green Trend Line on it which averages out the minor changes.

Fitness suggestions to strengthen legs so I can keep my original knees? Mar 16 2008

If you are overweight and have arthritis in the knees, the very best thing you can do is lose weight.  My heriditary arthritis in the knees is exactly what prompted my weight loss.  When I was at my heaviest weight (255 lbs) I could barely walk.  After losing weight I can now walk for hours, and I'm on a training program to begin running again.  In my case I did a lot of low impact cardio exercise in the beginning to get the weight loss started.  After one year, and 100 lbs of weight loss, I am only now beginning to work on lunges and squats - and I'm being very careful not to injure myself.  Hope this helps.

Weight Loss Is CC compatible with Atkins? Mar 10 2008

I did the Atkins diet more than once, and it always worked well for a while. Eventually I would be unable to stick with it, start eating exactly like before, and gain back all the weight I had lost plus a little more. I probably went through that cycle 3 or 4 times.

I have recently lost a lot of weight by following the CC plan. When I look at my food analysis, I am typically consuming 50% of my calories in the form of carbs. I think the CC plan is healthier and sustainable. Just my 2 cents worth.

OK, I like that.  Never thought of increasing for a while, then decreasing and so on.  Sounds good. I checked out your pics - you look great, and your arms are really defined.  I'm going to add you as a friend so I can find you quickly and check out your journal from time to time.  Thanks!

Hey, you too huh?  That's so great.  I checked out your pictures, and you look terrific! You know what's funny?  I sent one of my pictures to my mother last night, and she was so upset.  She called me up and she was almost crying!  She said I looked terrible, too skinny and so on.  She said I looked anorexic, and the weight loss made me look older...  She was begging me to go eat something - go to McDonald's she said.  A couple of people at work tell me the same thing, but I think the weight loss is the best thing to ever happen to me.  Anyhow, I have no plans to go back.

My weight loss method was fairly simple: I ate approx 1500 calories per day, and did enough exercise to burn 2500 calories. With a 1000 calorie deficit I lost about 2 pounds a week. When I got closer to my goal I increased the food a little, and also cut back somewhat on he exercise in order to slow the rate of weight loss.

I don't think I've really done everything perfect - most of my exercise has been walking, elliptical machine, and cycling. I do think I should have done a LOT more weight lifting, and I plan to get started on this "any day now". A lot of people tell me my arms and legs are too skinny now, but I'm not too worried about this because that's how I looked as a teenager. I still have some belly fat left, so I guess I need to build some muscle and burn the remaining fat.

I think as you get closer to your goal the weight loss does slow down.  In my case I'm getting very close to my goal, and I have to work much harder to lose any weight.  I'm increasing the amount of exercise I do, but also increasing the calories slightly.  I think it's OK for the weight loss to gradually taper off.  Good luck reaching your goal - it sounds like you're almost there!

Unfortunately you cannot buy a good telescope for $100 - department sore telescopes are junk. For $100 your best bet is binoculars, which are a terrific way to get started by the way.

For a little under $300 you can buy a good beginners telescope that will last for quite a while. Something like this goes for $270:

I started out with 100 lbs to lose. When I had lost 40 lbs nobody made any comments.  If I talked about my weight loss people would look at me a little strange, as if they didn't really believe me.  I guess it really didn't show.

When I hit 60 lbs of weight loss the comments started.  A lot of people would ask "what's your secret?"  I heard comments about my weight every day.

Now that I've lost 96 lbs the comments have pretty much stopped.  I guess people are now used to the "new" me, and the rate of change has slowed down.

Congratulations on your weight loss - I know how hard it is.  When you want to be noticed, show up for work wearing new clothes in your new smaller size.  That's when people will comment.

Fitness treadmill or eliptical? Jan 26 2008
01:03 (UTC)
I'm doing both.  I like the elliptical because it does seem to get my heart rate up quicker, and I think I burn more calories in a given amount of time.  I have also started doing a walk-run-walk program on the treadmill, because I want to work my way up to running 5K and 10K runs this spring.  If I had to choose only one machine, I guess I would choose the elliptical, and work on running outside.
Weight Loss How often should one weigh? Jan 26 2008

I weigh myself everyday because I don't want to lose focus.   If I start to slip a little and gain back a couple of lbs, I want to know right away so I can make adjustments - basically in the form of increasing the exercise level for a day or so.  While this works well for me, I can see how others might find it a little obsessive.  I'm not sure how long I will keep this up as I'm now approaching the maintenance level.  I hope I can begin to relax a little bit soon...

I sort of summed it up earlier. The problem with Canada's healthcare plan is that it DOES take a long time to be able to see someone, even under life-threatning situations.

Don't get me wrong. I'm a democrat (Hoping for Obama but Clinton will do) and I know that our current health system is pretty bad. ESPECIALLY the number of uninsured people, however Universal Health Care is no godsend. It's different, not better.

I'm in Canada, and I gotta say I disagree.  It can sometimes take a while to see a Doctor over something trivial, but under life-threatening conditions?  Not as far as I've heard.  Sure never happened to me.  I can see a Doctor whenever I want, and I walk out without paying a dime.  (Yes I know it comes from my taxes.)  It's not a "State" Doctor I see, but my family Doctor of 30 years.  He runs a private medical practice, and makes a GOOD living.

No system is perfect, but if I wind up in hospital for a month it will cost me nothing.  Zero.  What would that cost in the US?

Have you seen the movie Sicko?  The role of the Private medical insurance industry is to DENY you health care.  If they can deny your medical insurance claims, that means more profit for the insurance company.  A universal health care system, however botched up by the usual government screw-ups, will at least have the goal of delivering health care, not denying it.

Would you like to see Police and Fire Departments run by private industry, with contracts going to the lowest bidder?

(Disclaimer:  I'm a Canadian, and should not be commenting on US politics, so I'll shut up now. )

I bought myself a good elliptical machine.  It wasn't cheap, but it was well worth it.  I find the elliptical gets my heart rate up the quickest, and I burn more calories in a shorter period of time than on the stationary bike or treadmill.

Joining a gym makes far better sense from a financial point of view, but I could never get myself to go.  With the equipment downstairs in my basement there is no excuse.
