i'm a vegan and have used it in lattes.  pretty good.  never used it as a creamer though.  but instead of milk, it's my favorite.

Weight Loss I just binged AGAIN.... now what? Sep 19 2007

to katethegreat, i've had a binging problem and eating celery when i've had the urge to binge has helped me.  not everyone is the same, so keep an open mind?

when i reached for celery, i was reaching for nourishment instead of foods that would hurt me more.  while eating the celery the first time, i was put off the idea of all that chewing just as a reaction to stress and tough emotion.  the toughness of the celery made me reconsider my need for nourishment and the likelihood i was hungry at all, which for me is something that's hard to actually distinguish.  that it's really quite impossible to binge on celery struck me.  i put the celery away and have been without a binge for more days in a while.

try to go a week on maintenance calories without binging.  then try to reduce calories.  often doing these two things at once doesn't work.

you might want to talk to someone about this.

otherwise all i can say is that the aim should be health, not a certain weight or look.  sometimes the latter are impossible, not worth a struggle against yourself - all that work should be for you instead, because you're worth it.

I don't know about water, but I have heard that tea prevents the iron from being absorbed.  But vitamin C supposedly helps it.  Facts, anyone?
Vegetarian Out of the closet Jun 10 2007

I was talking with my parents when I was considering becoming vegan.  They find the thinking behind it different and interesting, but will never change themselves.  My dad would suggest I throw bacon into things until that joke got old, but both he and my mom have been surprisingly supportive.  I will live with them for a few months before school again, and cook my own meals, so there aren't any problems.   At family gatherings, it should be fine.  Those are rare and I think I've a cousin who is vegan and her partner is also vegan or at least vegetarian I think.

What shocked me was that my mom even looked at ingredient lists for me!  And I think she'll even eat the vegan french toast I promised to make...I actually for the first time want to cook for them to show them that veggie meals can actually be satisfying and delicious...but yeah, I suppose I do see it as a sort of challenge!

Vegetarian Hard for veggies to lose lbs? Jun 10 2007

I lost 25 pounds gradually by replacing meats and heavy pasta with vegetables for dinner with vegan sauces.  I wasn't trying to lose weight, just eat a balanced diet with more vegetables and then I didn't see a point to eating meat or trying to eat more of it when I saw these results.

Lentils were my protein saviour.  Low in calories for beans and one of the best out there.
Vegetarian Vegan roll call? Jun 10 2007

My diet has been vegan (strict vegetarian, I say however, see next paragraph for reason) for 5 months maybe.  I went from meat-eating to vegan accidentally by phasing more vegetables into my diet after being sick and I liked the effects.  I was buying soy milk and cow's milk alternating weeks, but the cow's milk didn't taste so good after a while and I wondered if it really wasn't as healthy as I thought.  Then I read about the ethics, watched some gruesome video and decided that never again would I eat a sick animal.  If I've just eaten one such animal in my lifetime, it's too many and I'm sad that I've probably eaten several.  It can't be healthy and anything involving tortured beings is not fit to be food and is doing the environment, animals and people no good, was my logic.

But I don't believe you can call yourself a vegan if it's only a strict vegetarian diet you follow.  There is already enough confusion about what is vegetarian.  Fish?  Chicken, anyone?  People don't get it.  For the moment, I tell people I am becoming vegan (gradually getting rid of animal products I have and not buying any more) and then what that means...

Thin is now a status-symbol.  Higher-class means personal trainers, psychotherapy and higher-quality food, as well as dining in restaurants with notoriously small potions.  Sad.
Vegetarian Mcdonalds Jun 03 2007

Actually, supporting McDonald's vegetarian options might promote a change, at least for the animals.  In capitalism, only demand will do this - and it would ensure that people who don't eat meat or animal products will have somewhere to stop when traveling through West Virginia or the South, where it's beautiful but not particularly vege-friendly.

However, I would rather starve than give them money.  Because I hate how McDonalds spreads its garbage all over the world and is pretty much the Ambassador of Obesity wherever it goes.  A public health nightmare.  So I suppose I do boycott them due to ethics no matter what.  Carry on.  Just wanted to point out the potential good one can do by supporting fast food vegetarian options, if one must.
Weight Loss Addiction to sweets Jun 03 2007

I feel like quitting cold turkey like a real addiction - because it is! - is the only way it's ever worked for me.  That includes even jam.  Replace with fresh fruit with lots of fiber like apples or pears.  Try even lemon juice cut with water.  After 3 weeks, the cravings will be gone - I know from experience.  It's just hard to last the 3 weeks without the bad sugar and I've not been able to do it for a few months.
Vegetarian Taste Buds Changing? May 31 2007
01:20 (UTC)
I feel like I can tell now when there's a lot of saturated fat in food.  I almost thought once that the Thai food I had had butter in it...but no, it was vegan.  I was just tasting the sat. fat in the coconut milk!

When I was first starting out and experimenting, I actually forgot what cheese tasted like...I used to say I loved bacon and cheese and could never be a vegetarian but after even a month of eating more vegetables I wasn't impressed with cheese and didn't even want bacon.

So much for the myth of the closet jerky-munching vegetarians.

Foods Does Green Tea Do The Trick? May 31 2007
01:14 (UTC)

I hear both green tea and oolong tea prevent fat absorption when after a meal.  Just don't be fooled by "Wu-Long" tea as online for 40 bucks...oolong is the same thing, and that's the common name you'd find at most regular grocery stores for cheap.

One problem with teas and meals though is that it also negatively affects iron absorption.  So if you're anemic, it's probably not a good idea.

try stopping for a week and eating smart - correct portions, good food, etc.  if you can't stop and have abnormal fears you will gain weight (even if you can stop and don't gain weight but are still afraid) then I'd get some help...

Real life?  Oh yeah...well then tell the person it's none of their business.  Again, keep information private.  I guess if they can see you losing weight its difficult...try not to talk about weight loss at all, etc. and esp. in front of your daughter in case that's what's setting it off.

BMI is for those of us who aren't intuitive.  Why do colleges rely so much on SATs?  Frankly, it's easier, even if not very accurate a measurement.

To me, tea and especially herbal tea is water.  I realize the caffeine in black tea could be a problem, but I find myself drinking probably a liter of herbal and then a liter of green or white or both.  And then I drink water on top of that.

Lentil soup.  Don't even need to soak the lentils beforehand, but you can if your want.  Put them in the boiling vege broth for 15 min. while you chop up the other veges like celery, carrots leeks, onions whatever and they'll be done by the time you cook the other stuff as well.  Add whatever spices you have.  Very simple.

If I were to replace high-cal foods with say, celery and low-sodium salsa, just so I can munch on something, wouldn't that be reinforcing the behavior to eat under stress.  Granted, it's better than the other stuff I could be eating, but I am still focusing on food as a way to feel better...I just want to stop thinking about food...this is madness!

Weight Loss Is Fasting good or bad? May 18 2007
23:54 (UTC)

I'm a proponent of fasting - but the right way.  Done too often, it can prevent weight loss and harm muscles, but if done 5 days or so 2-4 times a year, it can really be helpful regarding cravings, addictions, etc.  It also helped me figure out what hunger even was...a lot of people, I suspect, don't really understand the feeling.  Vegetables taste really good afterwards as well, so good habits are reinforced.  Just be sure not to eat ice cream or something afterwards...
