Are your friends headed to college?  If so, this opens up a whole new possibility for gifts.

All college students can benefit from a good DVD collection.  I mean you want your friends to make new friends in college, right?  College students like to watch movies during down time.  Buy them a college cult classic like Zoolander, Fight Club, any Will Ferrel movie, you get the hint.

As for the gift card idea, check into their campus.  Maybe there is a store on campus that you know they will frequent all of the time and get them a card for that.  Starbucks, perhaps?  Subway, perhaps?

Personally, I love wearing dresses in the summer and seriously you can find a cheap, flattering summer dress for ANY body type.  One dress wearing tip I have for gals who may be self conscious about their mid section is to wear a longer, tight fitting tank top under the dress.  It will smooth out any problem areas that might make you uncomfortable in a light-weight summer dress.

How old are you and how tall are you?

I am just trying to imagine why you are so heartbroken over EIGHT pounds.   You weren't well and who knows what your body is retaining to try and heal itself, probably a lot of fluids.  I find that my weight can vary as much as three to four pounds in ONE DAY.  And this is not because I binge or eat more than my calories allow.  I eat 1250 a day, drink the same amount of water each day and still my weight fluctuates.  I think it just depends on how my body is processing the water and if I am bloated, etc.  I am sure NO ONE would notice 8 pounds of water weight and bloating.  You should just eat regularly to get your body back on schedule. :)

P.S.  I notice you are a new member.  Welcome. You can use the tools on this site to figure out what a healthy weight is for your body type, and height.

I love to eat a big chunk of cheese (100 calories) and some lean lunch meat (about another 100 calories).   It may not sound like much, but with some water, the protein really fills me up.  I also like to have something like an apple while to campus for a total of about 270 calories.

From what I see, a good number of people join this webiste to better understand the health needs of their body.  I am classified as overwieght and I know it is extremley detrimental to my long term health.  Am I obsessed with how my body looks?  NO!  I just don't want my heart to strain any harder than it has to.  I want to trade in the fat for healthy muscle so that I can be physically fit as I age.

It sounds to me like you are getting lost in the apperance results (getting rid of your pouchy stomach) of dieting as opposed to the health benefits of a healthy BMI.

I feel beautiful, but I am also over 40 pounds overweight.  I want to get healthy, looking better is a side effect!  I think you would enjoy this process a lot more if you took on that kind of goal.  And don't do it only for your amazing roommate, do it for yourself.  And if you aren't ready, then don't do it.  There will come a time when you are ready.  If you feel that time is now then that's great and I look forward to seeing you around the discussion boards!  :)

Edit:  removed comment about roommate (Sorry, from your post before it somehow seemed to me that you and your roommate weren't getting along.)

Guadalupe, phoenix121, xuraiya, nikki_08, ashmar2828, maricmather, and valimus:

Fellow stressed students, I am so glad that we found each other.  Like I said, I would love to start a challenge, but I have actually never been in one and don't really know how it works.  Can anyone help me?  Does anyone have a good idea for a challenge?

Let's all sacrafice the books instead of our bodies for a change and get motivated!  (Hahah, did that sound enthusiastic enough to get you interested?)  Really though, it is so nice to hear the tips and frustrations of others who share my lifestyle.  Keep 'em coming :)

Guadalupe, thank you for your tips.  I am trying (after my B.A. Thesis is due this Friday) to go to the gym every day.  I used to LOVE working out and somehow just stopped.  I am going to take your advice. about breakfast.  I eat it every day, but it is usually small.  Good luck to you too.  You seem like you have a better grip on the lifestyle than I do.

Xuraiya, it's really not the buffets (or all you can eat option) in the cafeteria, it is the unpredictable lifestyle and the stress.  I haven't eaten in the dining halls since second year.  When you are rarely home to cook for yourself or if you are on a schedule slighly different from the dining halls, you have very few options.  I go to a VERY demanding institution, as Yale will be for you.  I thought it was easier maintaining a healthy lifestyle in high school because your schedule is lot more regular and eating at home is a lot easier.   I would not rely on your meal card swipes to control your snacking (think about all those coffee shop goodies that will be constantly available).  Bottom line I guess, why don't we all start now.  Don't wait until college.  :)

And...don't forget about the calories in booze.  Hahaha, this is an important tip for college students!

I so understand where you are coming from!  My boyfriend, who I have been living with for two years now is 150 and 6 foot 1.  Not only is allowed to eat whatever he wants and does it in front of me, he questions me when my will power is weak.  He is like, "I don't get it.  If you want to lose weight, don't eat that."  All I can say is that he will never know what its like.  He supports me most of the time like making sure that when he cooks dinner, there is something that I can eat or packing me lunches that are in my calorie range, but other times he is stuffing his face with things like pizza and cake.  I guess it is a balance we still need to work on as a couple.

Maybe you could challenge your husband to gain weight while you lose it.  It probably wouldn't be easy for him.  145 seems underweight for an adult male, maybe not though.
