| It's amazing how something simple like eating can control your life. Yesterday was a bit of an experiment for me, I planned out what I was going to eat and drank quite a bit of water and herbal tea during the day... and by following out a plan of eating small healthy meals, I did fairly well. (Caught myself nibbling crackers...told myself I had to log every calorie on CC, and that made me stop.)
I went to my friend's house for dinner and afterwards she offered me a small bowl of ice cream which threw me for a bit of a loop (she's not really a dessert person, and I hadn't planned to include a dessert in my meal last night). I calmed myself down and I had a small bowl of ice cream... not low-fat or frozen yogurt, but good old fashioned ice cream. When I got home I asked myself if I wanted to purge, even though my calorie count wasn't really high that day, and the answer was no... not even a little bit. I thought that I had done really well by accepting a small treat and being satisfied with it rather than beating myself up about it. I won't post my day-by-day accounts, but I guess it's a start in the transition in how I approach the idea of food. Food is not quite as scary today as it was before :) |

| Thanks guys for replying, it's really great to have an outlet like this. CC is really great, I think I'm like you sarah_11235... already I feel like I have gained a bit of control by logging everything that I have eaten.
irishmum - I had no idea that your body still recovers some of the calories that you consumed... no wonder I never seemed to lose weight when I was in purging mode, which sort of pertuated the whole self deprication cycle Just reading all of your posts this morning (cause it's am in NZ ha) has really made my day. Thanks :) |

| Hey everyone... I just posted a separate message under the "health and support" category but I realised I should have come here first. I have battled with bulimia on and off for 7 years, and unfortunately the last year has been the worst. I know I'm not a big girl but I have such a poor image of myself, and I really want to get myself on the right track. I've never been hospitalised or received proper treatment, but I figure admitting it is the first step to recovery.
I'm definitely my own worst enemy, and I don't want to set off the cycle by worrying about a little bit of pudge that I can lose easily through healthy eating and exercise. I really want to be involved with this thread and be able to talk to people that have or are going through a similar situation. thanks, <3 |

| I'm with collegelady... hot sauce is the key (My favorite is Tabasco Habanaro, HOT HOT!!) Also, something that my boyfriend really likes to do is to put chicken/beef/bacon powdered stock on popcorn. I try to find stock is in low in sodium, and a little definitely goes a long way. I also like to dip my popcorn in tomato or pumpkin soup instead of having bread. |

| Hey there... I know the feeling of having a hectic schedule... I always feel guilty whenever I'm not able to to get home at a decent hour to eat dinner or work out. Maybe the best solution is to eat more, but make it small portions throughout the day. I remember the college days not too long ago and thinking in horror of waking up earlier than 10, but it may help you eat breakfast earlier (even just an hour or so earlier at 7:30 , right when you get up). That way, you can space out your meals at ~ 3 hour intervals. (Midmorning snack, lunch, afternoon snack, dinner, even another small snack at night if you're really starving...) It will be ok if you eat a healthy dinner at 8:30 (I usually eat dinner then), and chances are you won't be as ravenous if you ate a good snack around 5 or so. Almonds, yogurt, fruit, cut up veggies, and even dry cereal are great snacks to munch on during the day. Try to include a serving a protein with each meal (milk or low sugar yogurt, lean meats, beans, nuts, peanut/almond butter, etc.) and choose whole wheat/high fiber alternatives whenever you can. The protein and fiber will help you feel fuller throughout the day with fewer calories, and it will help you not feel like complete crap when you get home and when you wake up in the morning. It may seem like you are eating all the time (well, you kind of are, but that's the point) but if you eat healthy foods and keep the portion sizes in check, you'll feel a lot better :) |

| Foods | oatmeal vs cereal | Sep 04 2007 08:27 (UTC) |

| I'm a pretty big supporter of the good, old fashioned rolled oats without any added flavour, sugar, etc and just adding your own bits. Think of it this way... even alot of the "healthy" cold cereals have tons of added sugar and not nearly as much fiber as just plain rolled oats. 1 cup of Special K may only have 117 cal or so, but it still has added sugar and less than 1 gram of fiber, which never satisfies me come mid-morning (hello office snack machine!) 1 serving of rolled oats (1/2 cup) is about 180 cal, but it has about 7-9 grams of fiber (depending upon brand) and the same amount of protein (~7 g) as Special K. Add 1 1/2 cup water, put it on the stove or nuke it in the microwave, and you have a HUGE breakfast for just 180 cal compared to cold cereal (I usually only use about 1/3 cup of rolled oats and less water) Plus, just like cold cereal, you can make it with skim milk and add yummy berries, almonds, or sugar free maple syrup. If you go for cold cereal, go for the really high fiber types (FiberOne and Kashi). The packeted oatmeal may seem easier, but the rolled oats are quick and easy in the morning and you have more control about what you put in... plus, porridge is the cheapest breakfast you can get so you can put that money towards buying fresh berries or new jeans rather than buying the expensive store brand cold cereals. |

| I'm with nycgirl... I love a little bit of marmite/vegemite on toast. Also, don't know if anyone suggested a bit of fresh avocado spread over toast with some tomatoes or fat free feta cheese. For weekend breakfasts, I love a single slice of whole wheat toast with marmite or avocado with a poached egg on top with hot sauce, that and a piece of fruit makes a fantastic breakfast. | |||

| Thanks guys, I'm starting to feel better, and just to ease my desire to get back into my exercise routine, I've been doing some light stretching and yoga poses at night.
clairelaine- any advice on good high nutrient foods? I'm eating lots of fruit and veggies (getting my vitamin C), but I'm open for any suggestions, as I'm getting a little tired of soup and salad |

| Thanks for your replies everyone, I ended up getting a small piece of dark chocolate with my coffee, which satisfied the emotional sugar craving, and just delved into my work for the rest of the day. After work, my boyfriend and I went on a jog around the block, and its true, doing a bit of exercise and just giving myself a ltitle treat made the day a lot better. Thanks for your support! | |||

| Hey there,
I guess I'm not quite as restrictive as you (because I absolutely love mexican food and margaritas, which are not low-cal), but I'm similar in the way that I completely beat myself up about ingesting a few measily extra calories than I think I should. I get so pedantic about making sure that I stay under 1200 calories a day that I deprive myself in the mornings, and then I end up hoovering up a half bag of "healthy" rice cakes by the afternoon because I'm so hungry. I've started to allow myself more calories in the morning (I only had one rice cake with peanut butter and an apple, and a piece of dark chocolate with my coffee that my barista gave me for free, which was a nice suprise) and so by dinner I'm not as ravenous. It doesn't sound like you have that sort of problem though... do you like any kind of junk food? You sound like an incredibly healthy eater. Check out World's Healthiest Foods, http://www.whfoods.com/foodstoc.php for tips on nutritious but more calorie-laden foods that will help you regain your metabolism. I've been drinking soy milk with fruit at lunch, it's not necessarily super low cal, but it's light-tasting, has tons of fiber and protein and healthy fats. |

| Hey there, I just joined calorie-count, and I'm hoping to regain my athlete's body that I had back in high school/early college, which was a muscular 122 lbs. I'm 5'7", small frame, and currently weigh about 132 lbs. About 3 years ago, I actually weighed around 148 lbs after the standard drinking and late night mexican binges when I was in college. I was able to lose about 20 lbs last year by just cutting out fast food and running again, then regained 5 this year since starting work in an office and having to cut down my activity level from "rigorous" to "light/sedentary" (shudder).
I'm hoping to tone up and trim down, and I'd love to use this group as a forum for getting through the last stretch to reach my former glory. Do any of you have advice about being active in an office environment or getting back abs after falling off the wagon? |

| Hey there, I have the same problem... I have to sit at a desk ALL DAY LONG (before this job, I was working on a farm, so I was outside working from dawn to dusk... to me, office work is torture!)
Anyways, I make sure I get up and walk around/walk to the bathroom once every hour or so, and I'll do a quick little exercise in the bathroom. If you have a private bathroom, that's best, but you can even do these in a stall if you have to: 1)trunk twists, 2) putting hands behind ears, bring alternate knee to elbow in sort of a high legs motion, engaging abs (I'm a girl, and it is possible in heels), 3) sideways press-ups (lean sideways against a doorway or wall, palm flat against surface, straighten arm to do sideways presses using bodyweight for resistance), 4) lunges or squats (a little tricky in skirts) 5) stand with back against wall or doorway, press palms flat against surface, use isotonic contractions to work triceps (just press and hold against surface, you should feel it in your tris) And as always... use the stairs! (I walk up the 10 stories in my building... with heels) My office is full of EXTREMELY inactive and junk food eating co-workers(and its singapore, so women don't really work out as much as westerners), so this forum is my sanctuary...any other tips would be great as well for me too! |
