Flo, since you're likely burning more calories than you're taking in even those days that you get off track, the scale is probably just reflecting temporary water weight gain.  Don't let it bother you too much.

Thanks, Ann.

Good job with the run/jog today. :)

I really had to psych myself up to go gym today.  I love working out, but I was soooo tired this afternoon. I only slept about three hours last night and then went fishing for several hours today.  Between the lack of sleep and the heat, I was exhausted, but I took a little nap before I went so that helped.  I think I'll go to bed early tonight.

Flo,

Hope your leg feels better soon.  I would not worry at all about one or two "bad" days.

If you don't already own a set of dumbells, I would suggest getting some of varying weights.  You can use them and do pushups to tone your upper body.  Crunches, reverse crunches, etc for your stomach, squats and lunges for legs.  Just be sure to use good form and do the exercises slowly concentrating on the muscles you're using.

As for the sodium, what does your typical menu look like?  Do you add salt to food?  Do you eat canned or frozen foods often?  Deli meat?

Have you considered working out early in the morning?  Even 20 minutes at a time is better than nothing.  Do crunches while watching TV.  Maybe take walks after dinner.  Maybe work out before bed.

You might want to consider a regular cardio routine as well as strengh training and target the muscles in your "problem" areas.

Also, do you know how much sodium you're consuming?  If you're consuming too much and not drinking enough water, you could be retaining more fluid than you think.

Hi Susannah.  It's been a long time since I've tried "Butter Buds, " so I really don't remember it was any good or not.  Ever use "I Can't Believe It's Not Butter" Spray?  That's one of my staples.

Anettabon:

Thanks. :)

We have some great bicycling trails around here and even though I'm not fast at all yet I've really gotten into bicycling whenever I have a chance.  I got a bicycle last September.  At that time, I couldn't ride for twelve miles without having to stop three or four times.  I went out and rode 12.5 miles this morning before work only stopping briefly to take a couple of sips of water and turn around.  On Saturday I rode 16 miles in the morning and 22 miles in the afternoon.  On Sunday, I rode 30 miles.  I typically will go as fast as I can for a short while then slow down to about 12-14mph, then pick up the pace again.

I also joined a gym and work out with free weights and machines.   As for cardio, besides bicycling, I also use the ellipticals at the gym-anywhere from 20-40 minutes typically and I vary the intensity.  I also get out and walk when I can.

I typically eat about 1,400-1,800 calories a day-a lot of whole grains, lean meats, and fruits and veggies and I eat small portions all day long.   I've really cut back on processed foods.  I try to watch my fat and sodium intake and drink a lot of water.

I'm somewhere between 5'2 and 5'3.  ;)

Weight: 125.5

Goal Weight: 115

Age: 28

I put on quite a bit of weight when I was in my late teens-early twenties.  At my heaviest I was a little over 200 lbs and wore a size 20 jeans.  In 2000 I decided to do something about it.  I started out losing weight the healthy way but after I lost a little over fifty pounds I hit a plateau and became discouraged and developed some very unhealthy habits to lose more weight faster.  Big mistake.  My metabolism slowed.  I lost muscle.  I was sick all the time and never had any energy.  I got down to 123, but didn't stay there very long.  Over the past few years my weight has been between 135-145.

In November 2006 I moved out of state for a job.  I didn't know anyone, didn't know my way around, and was working crazy hours and doing a lot of traveling so I lived off of fast food and didn't exercise.  My weight went up to 165.

Several months ago, I decided to start living a healthier lifestyle.  I wanted to be leaner and stronger.  I cook for myself now and don't eat out often.  I've started walking often, working out with weights, and took up bicycling.  I am in the best shape I have ever been in, but still have a ways to go.

I do this and I used to really beat myself up about it.  I don't now.  Now during those days when I'm feeling ravenous, I will treat myself and eat what I want, but I try to eat low calorie, healthy foods first and continue to exersize on those days as well.  That's another thing I never did before because of the pain I'd have during that time of the month.   However in the last few months, I really watch my sodium intake and stay on top of the pain by taking OTC pain relievers such as Advil or Aleve just before it starts.

Over the last few months, I decided to start weighing myself only once during that time.  I've been gaining about 3-4 lbs during those days but now by the end I lose that and an additional .5-1lb.  It's hard to believe, but I used to gain 10-15 lbs.  durning that time.  Talk about discouraging.

Runbabyrun, I too, have wide hips, but once I started losing weight, I realized they weren't as wide as I once thought they were.  I'm somewhere between 5'2-5'3 and my size 12 jeans were getting tight when I was around 155-160.  I'm now able to wear some size 6 jeans and shorts and think that I when I lose more fat around that area I think I could eventually get into a size 4.  You might be surpised as well.

Thanks for the replies. :)

Isn't it sad that there are people who get satisfaction watching someone fail and who just can't be happy for someone else when they succeed?

I think it's fine in moderation.  If I feel like I'm getting too much caffeine I cut back by mixing half decaf and half regular.

I brown ground turkey meat.  Mix in mushrooms and a few chunks of tomatoes.  Pour in two eggs.  Scramble together.  Add a little salsa, fat free shredded Mozzarella, and a spoonful of light sour cream once it's on the plate.  Tasty.  Lots of food.  Lots of protein.  Not a whole lot of calories.

Have you tried Fiber One?  I've been eating that with unsweetened soy milk.  One cup of cereal with half a cup of the soy milk is 160 calories.  Occasionally I'll water down the milk a little too to save calories.
